Oh my! This post just reminds of a much more closer connection to CKP...in fact it's the third Socio political backdrop movie of Mani Ratnam after Roja and Bombay called Kannathil Muthamittal. A couple of songs from this on motherhood and a child are just too beautiful that will slice thru your heart.
If Roja was about Kashmir and Bombay was about Hindu Muslim sensitivities, this third one from Mani Ratnam was about Srilanka Tamil refugees And camps in Rameshwaram because of the sea line to Sri Lanka.

The hero a writer in this movie frequents the refugee camps and takes inspiration to write his hard hitting and realistic poems and stories . His Neighbour is this college going girl who has always made her interest known for him. He likes her as well , writes his stories in her name as his penname but holds off expressing his love because she is still studying ... he doesn't give in easily to her attention seeking moves and pretends to dismissive of her. In one of the visits to the camp, this writer sees a newborn baby being left by this refugee mother minutes after birth to go bk to Srilanka . This moves him in an emotional turmoil. He writes on the plight of this newborn baby and the compelling circumstances possibly of the refugee new mother to leave the baby and go back to her home land . His Neighbour girlfriend reading that poem forces this writer to take her to the camp. He resists initially and then gives in. The girl sees this little baby , feels this immediate divine connection with the baby to give her name Amudha.

The writer frequenting the camp wants to adopt the Baby to protect her from being taken to orphanage but he is told that he can't as he is single. The man who was so long resistant to his Neighbour girl's flirting moves goes to her and out of the blue pops the question , are you eighteen... if you are then will you marry me and will you be a mother to Amudha.

The girl stunned at his proposal then asks him do you want to marry me because of my compassion and love for Amudha or am I just an appendage / freebee coming Along as free edition to Amudha because you want to adopt her 😆 . It's obvious that the marriage that was to happen was because of this little baby but the writer is smart here and reassures her that both the baby and his to be wife are his two eyes and his two cheeks 😉

Harit maybe should watch kannathil muthamittal 😆 😳

It does sound like KM doesnt it? Yikes... no connection what soever sorry
I didnt intend to connect it one bit. The deivam tanda poove song is absolute masterpiece

Piranda udalum nee
Piriyum uyirum nee

You are my body in this lifetime, you are my soul when I depart
No song in any language describes motherhood better than those words

Every word in this song is dynamite

Ashu's Roja post hit me with the KM post. Absolutely stunning ripper of a song.

Oru Deivam thandha poove( Flower gifted by God )

Chella mazhaiyum nee,
chinna idiyum nee
Pirandha udalum nee,
piriyum uyirum nee,
maranam eendra jananam nee,

You are my Tiny Raindrop
You are my Little Thunder
You are my newborn
You are my soul
You are Birth what Death Gave

Enathu selvam nee,
izhaitha kavithai nee,
ezhuthu pizhaiyum nee,
Iraval velicham nee,
iravin kaneer nee
naan thookki valartha thuyaram nee,

You are my Wealth
You are my linking poem! you are also the flaw in my writing!
You are the borrowed light! You are the tears of the night!
You are my sky! You are my wings
You are the sorrow that I lovingly raised!

I haven't seen the movie. Nothing to compare for me. But I'm pretty just a small line of story that is similar by coincidence.

Agree the song is a masterpiece ! Beautiful picturization as well.

A beautiful coincidence. Again it's chinmayi for the female version and Jeyachandran for the male version. She is extremely gifted and lucky to have a few good evergreen songs in her kitty.
That period was good for the combo of Mani Ratnam, Vairamuthu and AR Rahman .
