Backup Plan

"Thats such a f**king double standard man" Tan poured his beer out into his mouth

"maybe" R&B shrugged

"U had a bevy of girlfriends I hear" Tan said almost choking on his beer and slurring

He coughed a bit and cleared his throat

The twins brought one butterfly after another, their hands stained yellow

Sahana tried to catch one but fell over face down on the flower patch

She cried and threw a fit and was scratched up from the bush.
She used the opportunity to be held by Tan

He fed her whatever he was eating

Nivi and Lasya sat in a far corner slouched over a tablet, giggling

Lasya had a boyfriend now
Nandu had been dating just before he completed high school

R&B cudnt take his eyes off his daughter

II came out to check on the food as she talked on her cell phone

"Naa varale, nee vaa ka its your turn"

"II can I get another beer please?" he asked politely

She paused her call and exhaled "Really?" she questioned

"I am out and you were headed in right?" he urged

"Whatever... I am going upstairs with Sam to relax and chat, kuch bhi khao tum sab

"Yaar agar main raat ko ruka to poker khelegi kya?" Tan asked chewing on some non veg pakora

"I HAVE chaar BACHE" II reminded

"Do mujhe de de" Tan winked

"Milenge to chaar warna nahi" II said sternly

"Sun, main isko kya keh raha hoon"

R&B grunted hinting Tan he better not say anything

"Kya?" II asked

"Iru ka... will call u back, looks like some serious dirt on dude" she said before hanging up

R&B stretched on the grass

His boys and the dogs ran up to him and lay on him

"Why is it not OK for Nivi to have a boyfriend?" he asked II

II was taken aback

"Umm... abhi bahut choti hai" II claimed

"If she feels differently about Greg mana mat karo bata raha hoon, then it turns unhealthy and secretive" he insisted

"She goes to his house whenever" II mumbled

"So whats wrong with the boyfriend tag then?" Tan argued

"Umm... I dont want her to be kissing and such"

"Boyfriend approve nahi karegi to she wont kiss or what?" Tan argued

"Tan" II stopped him

"Nahi meri baat sun... iske 9th standard se girlfriends thi, Sam tells me. Its normal in this part of town"

II had been nudging R&B to say something, he had covered his face with a ball cap and was letting the boys hide his arms and legs in the life size lego blocks

"To theek hai let her date Greg" she said

R&B freed one of his arms and removed his ball cap

"Whoaa?" he was shocked

"Looked like u approved the idea no?" II challenged

"I am just letting him get it out of his system" R&B responded tritely

"Even SHE agrees... Iyer hai yeh" Tan patted her back

Sahana was down now, trying to crawl into a lego structure tipping some blocks over

R&B sat up unwilling to debate it with his BIL

"I really dont care to be sold on the idea Tan, she aint dating" R&B said coldly

"Dekh le apne aap karna shuru karegi she wont tell you. Shail Grover, the boy Lasya is friends with, weve known them 50 years" he said

II squirmed

"My parents have known them longer. I trust that kid" he said

"Huh" R&B grunted

"Boss they end up kissing anyway, by legitimizing it atleast u can stall the next step" Tan whispered

The girls were oblivious

"II I really dont want to talk about this" R&B pleaded with his wife

"Tan... we think differently" she said softly

"He was a player" Tan said with a shocked expression "I cant believe his views have changed so drastically"

"Uh" R&B was unwilling to debate it

"I can chat with Nivi too" Tan offered

"Nope. umm... no" R&B said after some thought

"Tan andar chalo aap, Sam aap aur hum" II tried to distract him

"Dushman nahi hoon saale... tera" Tan grunted

Ranjan came out after a nap

"Gudiya mera phone kithey" he demanded

II turned

"Can u tell Tan I dont care for Nivi to be dating?" R&B asked his Dad directly

Ranjan was still a bit disoriented

Tan laughed out loud amused

"Dad for back up?" he asked shocked

"He knows I dont care for Greg. Hes known the Chopras 70 years.." R&B said gruffly

"Dad I am saying its OK to approve Greg and Nivi dating" Tan insisted

"Tan puttar ren de, Nivi... hes very ... kya kende ne, fiercely protective of Nivi" Ranjan explained

"Dad tey main? meri koi value nahi haigi?" Tan was mock outraged

"Arey nahi raje... isko bache... kee dassan... isko bache" Ranjan searched for words

Tan waited...

II signaled R&B to relax

"They are his life betaji. Osne bahar padhne vi nahi bhejna hai Nivi nu, tu vekh" Ranjan said wearily

"Aise kaise chalega? Its almost 2030" Tan announced

"Bus aise hi hai... is ghar di baat in logaan di marji" Ranjan gently warned Tan

"Thanks" R&B said softly turned and walked away from Tan, heading upstairs, effectively causing the first sign of cracks in the Tan-R&B relationship

Why cracks in the relationship. Everyone have different views on same subject if rb not there yet where he will let his daughter date and tan is already there so what's the problem.
RB was a player so he knows ...
This time it's his daughter so yes he will b super protective, human nature so what's there that tan (mature one) doesn't get it and hold a grudge about that.

" Nivi and Lasya sat in a far corner slouched over a tablet, giggling
Lasya had a boyfriend now
Nandu had been dating just before he completed high school"

This is a common scene in almost every home slouched over a Tablet today. More than who said what to whom and were they in their limits or crossed lines in its sensitivity It's more about Dating scene as a new norm in our culture ...well!! I can write realms on it and still I'm sure I would be contradicting myself many times over only because I would like to tag myself and my generation of fellow parents to teens and tweens between 2007 and 2030 as FIRST GENERATION PARENTS OF SOCIAL MEDIA COUNTER CULTURE ... a NEW CLASSIFICATION Just like how generations are classified as baby bloomers ... millennials, Generation X or even First / second / third / fourth generation immigrants. I chuckle at this tag I give to myself .

I always argue with my mother saying that when we were growing up she only had to contend with Tv as a technology or medium and when she was growing up my grand parents with no Tv not even that... only had to contend with their teens tantrums as typical teen behavior . But now parents to teens have not only typical teen behavior of their teens to handle AS a GROWING UP PROCESS they also have SOCIAL MEDIA AS THEIR TWEEN TO CONTEND WITH in its GROWING UP PROCESS. A lot of unlearning is required as parents to learn all on our own with no experience as BACK UP
PLAN to Navigate our teens as first gen parents of this counter culture.

Social media than it being a technology is more a counter culture today redefining accepted norms and outlook of main stream cultures and sub cultures. This Colossus has risen cutting across cultures when we have reached a time and stage where there's very little that distinguishes western and Asian cultures societal norms and traditions. Dating is a common scene in western culture and traditions like homecoming or prom have parental acceptance as it's gateway and now with the exposure technology is providing as a network to children there is only going to be one main stream culture redefined by social media as its norm soon.

Today a teen , tween and youth whichever part of the world they are from wants social acceptance to dating and online dating not just from their parents but also society . It's taken for granted more . And this acceptance is soon going to be an universal fact if not a norm.

Sorry people that post was more an outpouring of a roaring argument between me and my mother just this last Sunday in full presence of my father and my mother in law on a similar topic. My Neighbour celebrated her teens sixteenth bday by waking her daughter up to a huge decoration across her yard which was very appealing. A casual convo over coffee on 16 and the unofficial/ official license to freedom and independence at 16 here with my mother followed ... don't know when it became about teens, freedom and social media .My father and my mother in law were playing judge and peace drivers . Thankfully my teen and her dad were out for her Sunday morn drive Practice lesson. Small mercies.

This belter of an update from Nisha and the argument I had triggered this post.

Fixated on him

The house looked elegant and sparkling.
Roses pinned to every inch of the walls and surface, and "planted" all over the lawn.

The mehandi girls drew patterns in the ground floor living room

Manya sat on a low divan wearing a flower crown of sorts, she looked lovely

She turned red every time Makarand passed by

Nobody insisted that the "groom" had to arrive the evening of engagement

Nivi was delirious seeing so many people flit through the house.

Ranjan avoided the lounge, or couldnt some times, he walked over and quietly looked at his daughter from far

Chachi had allowed two of her DILs to attend, she had promised to "arrive later"

Sam wore jeans and barely any mehandi on her left hand and spoke animatedly on the phone

Manya looked like a pale flower in her peach chikan suit, the pattern so intricate from far it seemed like it was all lace

R&B leaned over the rail one foot up and watched his daughter weave through the "traffic" down below

Many times Lasya pointed to him, wearing a gauzy hot pink chudidar and flowers in her hair she was the pompous big sister that was teaching Nivi how to break the law

There was a guard especially on their tail

The caterers were setting up stations under pristine white tents

II went looking for Nivi and looked up, he raised his water bottle in a toast

She looked divine in a pink chikan suit

They didnt exchange any words, unable to tear eyes off his.

She stood in the middle of the lawn, surrounded by 6 inch tall pink roses.

The speaker guy blasted "Jiya laage na" from Talaash to test the sound

"Tum bin mora jiya laage na"
"Mann ab taq jo bhooj na paaya tum woh paheli ho
Koi na jaane kya woh rehes hai jiski saheli ho

"Main muskaaoon sabse chhupaaoon vyakul hoon din rain
Oh tabse na aayi naino mein nindiya
Mann mein na aaya chain

Uninterrupted they would stand there gazing at each other

Manya had spent weeks going after R&B not apologizing per se but expressing remorse in other ways

He had the bad habit as everyone knew of, of shutting down completely

"Go get him from the airport no?" II had begged in the morning

He had pinned her to the bathroom wall, and just gazed heatedly scanning her face for one dishonest bone

"Po daaa" she whispered

He bend down groaning and kissed her unwilling to talk

"This is her big day. She doesnt need my defense" II admited, muffled on his neck

He rubbed the back of her neck

"Please" she whispered

"What are u wearing tonite" he demanded huskily

"Naa enna ketten" (what did i ask u) she accused

He grunted and hugged her not so gently

"What did she say?" II prodded

He stepped back and looked at her piercingly... he was inscrutable usually now he was completely off limits

She groaned and leaned back shutting her eyes

"Dad akele jaayenge airport, his parents and family are coming too" II begged

"Who do u care about more?" he asked

"Between Dad, you and Manya?" she asked agonized

Her tormented face bothered him, he was unable to let go of the feelings of betrayal
She always saw him as a cool aloof man, she almost didnt want to see his flaws.
She was fixated on how HE felt about everyone.
It amused and hurt him at the same time

"Well... Not YOU" she lied trying to joke about it not meeting his eyes, her cheeks turning crimson at that lie

He exhaled on them turning them red-er.

She grabbed his hand as he stroked her warm cheek.

"Stop it, poven sollu" (say u will go to the airport") she whispered

"I have a meeting with a local VC at Noon" he said quietly

"Is this going to be like Dad?" she asked her eyes glistening, her face earnest and sad

He stepped back running his fingers through his messy curls not taking his eyes off her.

He took her hand gave himself finger kangi... causing her to blush..."I" she began

"II" he finished, kissing her palm and returning it to her walking out of the bathroom...
