Secret Passage
"Is she going to quit her job?" Amma asked politely
"I dont know Mrs Iyer... she wont tell me" he chuckled
A Q like that from Appa would have invited snark, but from Amma, he chose to be amused by it, chose to be patient
"The boys are very naughty" Amma whispered
There were throwing their soda cans up in the air and trying to catch
Unlike their Dad they were very poor in the coordination deptt
Plus they werent even 4
The trains clattered all over Amma Appa's bedroom
II was taking another chhotu nap
Or she was hiding, I mean who can take a nap with two bulls in a china shop
R&B sat on a nylon wire spun chair, an old, polished rosewood chair, which was Appa's prized possession from Tanjore
Amma folded some of the twins' clothes on the bed
"Mr Iyer is very emotional, dont mind if he acts like he knows everything" Amma said quietly
He smiled
"He loves his daughters a lot... we were thinking she will not have more than one..." Amma was quiet
They both wandered back to difficult times after the miscarriage when Nivi was 1.6 mo
"Who knew? These boys were waiting to come"
"Paatti... I mant thachi mamu" (yogurt rice) begged Ved
"Patti noku first idli taratuma?" (can I give u idli?) she asked kindly
Kissing his fat cheeks
Both boys faced has paint all over now
"U look very ferocious... Grrr" Paati chuckled
"Amma is taaaching?" (laying down)
Amma chuckled
"I like how they mix English & Tamil" she smiled
"They mix Tamil and Hindi too" R&B said in a self satisfied way
Appa was opening the Godrej to get something
He grunted...
"Avala innikki raatri ingeye tanga sollu dee" (let her stay here) Appa mumbled
"Ida rendayum kootindu po sollu, Nivi mudincha anuppa sollu" (ask him to take these two and send Nivi instead)
Appa assumed Dude didnt understand under the breath Tamil scolding, oh but he did
"Nivi has school tomorrow, and II wanted to head home... I can leave the twins if u like" R&B said with a poker face
Amma nodded JOYOUSLY
Appa had a frightened look... "Ada Raama!!" he exhaled
"Enna toonga vida maata dee" (they wont let me sleep) he spoke to his wife
"They are pretty good abt it, II sings to them and they are knocked out, usually Taaye Yashoda" he said proudly, like an Iyer boy
Appa was sputtering...
The boys were jumping on the bed trying to string the ceiling fan with the train chain
One tried, the second... after 17th or so try Siddu's train caught the blade
He fell backwards on the bed and started to laugh
They both then started falling back on the bed and laughing spilling all the folded laundry on to the floor...
Amma picked it up
Amma wanted to tell them they were going to get a sibling, but until the 3rd month she didnt want them to broadcast it
She sat down by them
"Seri... tell me something, do u like kutti papa?" (babies?)
The boys froze... one pulled on his toe, the other sucked his thumb...
They made hand gesture to show a tinnny baby
"DIS big, paati?" "DIS MAAL?" (small) they asked
She showed them
They looked at her in wonderment
She reached for her phone and showed them their own newborn pictures
They smiled shyly...
"where is it?" Ved asked looking under the bed
The other one joined and crawled al over under
Appa HAD to smile
"Mo baby paati" they came out
"Ask Thatha" Amma pulled him in
R&B watched with gentle amusement
They ran to him and stood with hands on their hips
"Is it in the GO-DAYJ?" they asked banging the Godrej
Appa jumped out of his skin
They continued to bang until R&B stopped both
"See... this how they are" Appa told R&B
R&B chuckled audibly at Appa's attempt to teach/show HIM how HIS own kids were
The boys had left the Go-dayj to go after the fan
Amma had accidentally turned the fan on, the can trains started to clank loudly and completely tangled itself
They boys thought it was the funnest thing
"Dey dey dey" Appa screamed as they climbed back on the bed, and tried to untangle it by throwing the other "good" train at it
Resulting in chaos
II had to come in and shout
"Siddu Vedu" she hissed
They froze
"What are they doing?" she asked her husband
He chuckled
"Your Amma says they can stay the night" he smiled
II bit her lower lip... arresting her smile
They had made out and congratulated each other for a bit before II tried to nap
She looked flushed and her eyes sparkled
"Seri namba polam vaa" (lets go) she said to her husband
"Neeyum irunduden" (why dont u stay?) Appa begged
Amma was long gone, getting idlis out
"No pa u can have these two" she smiled smiling secretively at her husband
The boys were hunting for a "seekwet door" (secret ) behind the bathroom door now... boys and secret passages...
