Hey all! So, I'm back with my next update after a really looong while again. And though I had hoped to update this sooner, I never seemed to get the chance. I'm really sorry about that.
As always thank you very much for the likes and comments. I appreciate them more than you know.😃 Anyway, here's the next chapter. This one ended up becoming really long; so I've divided it into 2 parts, both of which I'm going to update now. It contains a little more of Shivaay's memory though it's not complete. Hope you like! Good Reading! 😊

Chapter Forty Four

Part 1

When Shivaay arrived at the kitchen a little later with Om and Rudy in tow, the sight he saw warmed his heart. His Badi Ma was in there and laughing her heart out... courtesy Anika.

She was bustling about the kitchen making tea, while she talked to Badi Ma, apparently telling her a funny story.

"Really? Tumne sach mein uske gadi pe gobar dal di?" Badi Ma was asking as she laughed.

"Haan Aunty. Aur do-teen ghante tak unke ghar ka pani bhi bandh kiya, toh woh gadi saaf bhi nahi kar paya." Anika said, laughing a little as well.

Then turning to look at Badi Ma who was roaring with laughter again, she said, "Waise normally main aisa nahi karthi par uss din unhone apni hadd par hi karli thi. Mere Bua aur bhai se badtameezi ki... toh sabak sikhana zaroori tha."

Shivaay noticed the anger that had flared in her eyes at that point and realized that they had that in common- she too would fight anyone who hurt her family.

He could also see the genuine joy in his Badi Ma's eyes and he was glad for it. Especially since she seemed to have completely forgotten about the earlier fight. His Badi Ma was an absolute sweetheart and he knew that he was really lucky to have her as his other mother.

His Bade Papa might not care so much about him or anyone else in the family, but his Badi Ma certainly did. She was everything an Oberoi Bahu should be- classy, elegant and sophisticated. In spite of the drinking habit she had started after her husband had betrayed her, she managed to be all those things and a lot more.

But what was most important to Shivaay was that she had stayed. In spite of all the humiliation Bade Papa had put her through she had stayed to allow her children to have as normal a childhood as possible. It may not really have worked, but the fact was that she had tried. And he knew that she loved him as much as she loved her own children.

His own mother, however did not actually fit that bill of classy Oberoi Bahu. She was loud, often uncouth and couldn't even speak English properly. However, he knew that she truly loved him and he loved her. As annoying as he found her sometimes, she was his mother and that fact wouldn't change. But, he had occasionally got the feeling that she loved the idea of being Shivaay Singh Oberoi's mother, a tad bit more than she loved him. It bothered him sometimes, but he never let it get to him.

He had learned to control his emotions long back. He had had to become strong for his brothers and sister. They needed him, and it was his job to protect them and his family. And he would always do that, no matter the consequences to himself.

Even if it was themselves he was protecting them from. Like the fight earlier in the evening. He knew that if he had let it continue, it would have turned out a lot worse than it actually was. He knew that Om had been about to blow. And that would have just made everything worse.

The weird thing was that Om rarely got angry, except when it came to his father. Om was a really emotional person and Shivaay knew how deep rooted his hatred for Bade Papa was. He had even fallen into a drug habit because of it; a habit that had almost killed him. It was Shivaay that had forced him to go to rehab, and brought him back to regular life, after a lot of struggle. Shivaay had almost lost him then and that was not an experience he wanted to go through again.

And today he had seen a glimpse of that old Om; the one that had no regard for self preservation. The one who was so angry with life that he would get into situations that could kill him. And that evening Bade Papa had been mad enough to hurt him as well. That was a fight Shivaay knew Om would not win by himself. That's why he had decided to interfere and stop the argument.

"Haan. Par pani bandh karna kuch zyada nahi tha?" Badi Ma asked Anika, bringing Shivaay back to the moment.

"Actually haan!" Anika replied. "Mujhe bhi baad mein aisa laga, issliye do ghante baad pani vapas chalu kiya. Aur maine maafi bhi maang liya." she continued. "Par main aisa hi hoon. Gusse mein kuch bhi kar dethi hoon." she added after a moment, smiling sheepishly.

"Cute!" Shivaay thought. Wait what? Had he just thought of Anika as cute? No! No! Not good Shivaay! She's...

"Hmm. Tum na, bilkul Shivaay ki tarah ho." Badi Ma commented, startling Shivaay out of his thoughts. Now, he was outraged. They were nothing alike!

"Nahi Aunty. Main Billu ji ki tarah bilkul nahi hoon." Anika replied echoing his thoughts. "Main toh sirf genuine reasons ke liye gussa karthi hoon. Woh toh har waqt, bina koi reason ke, gusse mein hi rehte hai." she added.

If Shivaay had been outraged earlier, now he was angry! How dare she comment about him? Who the heck does she think she is??

"Excuse me?" he growled.

Anika, who had had her back to the door, froze on hearing his voice. She slowly turned around and looked at him. She could see the anger in his eyes. But, there was also a challenge there. A challenge that she probably shouldn't accept. Especially if she really wanted to keep her distance.

But then she had always loved challenges, and she never could resist proving herself. Besides, there was no way she could ever let herself lose to this man.

She smiled her most charming smile. "Billu ji!" she exclaimed, as though she were talking to her favourite person in the universe. "Aapko kuch kaam tha kya?" she asked innocently. "Hello OmRu." she added smiling at them as well, before turning her attention back to Billu Ji.

Shivaay wasn't thrown for even a moment. He wasn't a master manipulator for no reason. He could recognize manipulation just as well as he dished it out. He knew that she was evading.

And he wasn't about to let her off the hook.

"Haan. Maine poocha ki tumne abhi kya kaha?" he replied still in the deadly quiet voice. He saw her gulp and smirked. He had her now.

Anika was scared. For the first time ever she had found someone who could match her moves- someone who could keep up with her, as her old friends would have put it.

You see, even though her life had been hard, she did have an extremely small group of friends she could trust, though Dev had always been her closest friend. However, she had left them behind as well, when she had left her home.

And she had always been the smartest one one in that group of her's. They were always accusing her of being too smart for her own good. To top that, she had had a bad reputation as well. She had been well-known for being able to beat up any guy foolish enough to challenge her. And no one had ever been able to keep up with her sharp and sarcastic tongue either, which she knew how to put to good use. All these facts combined had had everyone scared of her.

And though she had mellowed down and changed quite drastically after Dev's death, that girl in her did occasionally come out. Especially since she had met this man. The war they had had was ample proof. She had known that fighting with him would be dangerous, and she had still done it. That was something the other her would have done.

But the fact was that this man affected her more than she let on to anyone. He really seemed to bring out the other her- the worst in her. And that scared her, because she couldn't go back to being that girl. It would mean trouble for everyone.

"Maine kya kaha?" she asked him, returning her focus to the moment. "Kuch bhi toh nahi." she answered her own question. "Main bas Jhanvi Aunty ko ek khissa suna rahi thi." she added.

"Haan aur uske baad tum mere baare mein kuch bol rahi thi. Yahi ki main humesha gussa kartha hoon. Right?" he replied, raising an eyebrow sexily.

"Wait what?" Anika thought to herself. Had she just thought of this man as sexy??? No! No! This cannot be happening! Focus Anika!

"Haan toh!" she asked aloud with as much attitude as she could muster. "Usme galat kya bola maine?" she continued. "Jab bhi main aapse milti hoon toh aap mujse gussa hi karthe hai." she added. Then without pause she continued, "Jaise ki ab. Pehle toh aap meri aur Jhanvi Aunty ke baathon ko chupke sun rahe the. Aur phir jab main aapke baare mein kuch sach bol rahi hoon toh aapko itna michmichi kyu much raha hai?"

"Excuse me, par main kuch chupke nahi sun rahe the. Main yahan khana banane ke liye aya tha." Shivaay replied with equal attitude. "Aur kya kaha tumne? Mich... what??" he asked, his expression becoming confused. His nose wrinkled and tiny frown lines appeared on his forehead as he tried to understand what she had just said.

"Billu ji is so cute when he's confused!" she thought, a tiny smile appearing on her face.

Then she realized what she had just thought. Oh God! This cannot be happening. It has to stop!

"Michmichi!" Anika replied returning to the moment for now. "Matlab disgust ya yahan pe irritation." she explained.

"Haan toh tum yeh sab words nahi use kar sakthi thi?" Shivaay asked. "You know, in a language people can actually understand!" he added.

Anika rolled her eyes. "Main Hindi main hi baath kar rahi hoon. Jisme Bharat ke log normally baath karthe hai." she replied in an irritated tone.

"Oh please! That word you just used... mich... whatever is not Hindi." Shivaay replied equally irritated.

Anika just rolled her eyes again. "Angrez chale gaye inko chodke!" she muttered under her breath. But he heard her.

"Hey! Tum mere baare main aise baath nahi kar sakthe. Main tumhara employer hoon." he said, lifting his hand and pointing a finger at her.

"Excuse me par mere employer aap nahi aapki Dadi hai." Anika replied, mimicking his movement.

"Par paise toh main hi de raha hoon na!" Shivaay replied, swelling his chest and standing tall. He did his signature hair flick as well for good measure.

"Sirf paise dene se aap mere employer nahi honge. Maine agreement Dadi ke saath ki hai, aap ke saath nahi." she answered, rolling her eyes at him again and lifting her nose in the air.

"Arre tum dono bacchon ki tarah ladna bandh karoge?" Om interrupted their fight.

"Tum beech mein math bol Om!" Shivaay told him.

"Arre wah! Ab toh aapko apne bhai ke bolne se bhi problem ho raha hai." Anika replied sarcastically. "Aap na, ekdum... Billu ho!" she added.

"Don't call me that!" Shivaay replied exasperated and annoyed.

Anika glared at him and Shivaay couldn't help but be scared for a moment.

"Aap Billu ho toh aapko Billu nahi toh Billi bolu kya?" she asked, her voice dripping with sarcasm. Shivaay noticed Badi Ma and OmRu trying not to laugh out loud at that and he got even more irritated.

"Stop it!" he growled.

"Nahi. I won't stop. Billu ji!" she growled back. Then without pause she began to sing, "Billu ki shaadi hogi

Billu ka sehra sajega

Billu ghodi chadega!

Billu!! Billu!! Billu!!"

Shivaay was now irritated beyond belief. He was so close to strangling this girl. He didn't care that he would go to jail for it. Nothing mattered at that moment to him except her.

As this realization struck him, Shivaay was stumped. He shouldn't be feeling anything- even anger- for some unknown middle class caterer. He was Shivaay Singh Oberoi and he did not have even enmity with someone below his standards. But this girl was an exception to that rule. She had won their war. She had earned his respect. She was something else. And he couldn't help but like her strength of character and her self respect. But he was engaged to another woman and shouldn't be thinking about this girl.

"This is so not good." Shivaay thought to himself. "It has to stop."

"Enough!" he growled. "You have no right whatsoever to call me by my nickname. Don't forget that you are just some unknown piece of trash that my Dadi happened to feel sorry for and are easily replaceable. So just stay in your place." he continued angrily.

He saw Anika freeze. He saw the hurt in her eyes. His heart clenched in response, which only angered him further. He also noticed the horrified expressions on his brother's and Badi Ma's face. But he was too angry with Anika and with the things she made him feel, to care. So, he ignored them all and turned to walk out.

Here's part 2.
P.s: Don't ask me what I've written as the memory. I have no idea. I just hope it makes sense. :P

Part 2
At that moment the tea on the stove started to boil, making him turn back around. The other three turned to look as well, as Anika unfroze and went to turn the stove off. She moved to get the tongs from the other side of the stove and accidentally grazed her palm along the rim of the saucepan in the process. She pulled her hand back quickly hissing in pain.

Shivaay was beside her in a moment, all his anger from a moment ago forgotten.

"Aaram se!" he scolded. He took her hand in his own and started blowing on it gently. When he looked up, he saw the surprise in her dark eyes. He himself didn't know why he was doing what he was doing. All he knew at that moment was that he wanted her to stop being in pain.

And... was that a slight blush he saw on her cheeks? He gently blew on her hand again- looking at her this time- and saw her blush deepen. He felt pleased about that. So, she was affected by him as well. At least a little.

But then her mask was back. She hid both her surprise and her blush very quickly, and looked away. Gently pulling her hand out of his grip, she said, her voice cold, "I'm fine Mr Oberoi."

Then without looking at any of them, Anika picked up the tongs and used it to pour the tea she had made into two cups. She held one out to Badi Ma.

"Yeh lijiye, aap yeh chai peejiye. Aapki thakan ek chutki main chali jaayegi." she said. Badi Ma smiled and nodded, accepting the cup.

Taking the other cup, Anika added, "Aur yeh main Dadi ko dekar aathi hoon." Saying so, she walked out of the kitchen, leaving all four of them staring after her.

The moment she left both his brothers and even his Badi Ma turned to look at him, with confused expressions on their faces. He had been so focused on Anika when she had hissed in pain, that he had momentarily forgotten that they had had an audience.

He flushed for a moment, but controlled himself and looked at them all with as much attitude as he could muster. He raised an eyebrow at them as if to ask, what?'

"Woh kya tha Shivaay?" Om asked him.

"Kya kya tha?" Shivaay replied nonchalantly. "Maine kuch bhi toh nahi kiya." he added. "I just remembered, I have a call to make. You guys start. I'll be back." he continued quickly, before any of them could reply. He then turned again and walked out this time, once again not waiting for a reply. He knew a lecture would be on its way, and he had no patience for it. He needed to be alone for a while.

Actually, Shivaay had seen the moon charm bracelet on her wrist again, as she had hissed in pain and raised her arm up. It had brought a flood of memories again, which had just added to his confusion about her. And he had reacted to the situation without really thinking about the consequences, just like he had that night.

That night had been a lot of fun, certainly, but everything he had done then had been so out of character for Shivaay Singh Oberoi- but perhaps not for 'just Shivaay.'

But then, the version of him that had come out that night had never made an appearance before that or since. It was a version of him that that girl had somehow brought out...

"So where are we going?" Shivaay asked the girl.

They had just made a deal to not reveal their identities to each other and were walking down the street hand-in-hand. Shivaay found the idea strange and a little suspicious, but he decided to just go with it for a change.

Going with it was so out of character for him though, that a part of him kept wondering why the heck he was doing it. But another, deeper part of him was actually enjoying this chance to just be himself.

"Downtown." the girl replied to his question. "There's another masked party there, that we can attend." she continued.

"Don't worry. We don't have to stay long if you don't like it there. But it'll definitely be more fun than the one we just left." she added in response to the alarm that had probably appeared in his eyes at the mention of a downtown party.

He had heard of downtown parties. They were not somewhere he would be caught dead going as Shivaay Singh Oberoi.

But tonight, he wasn't Shivaay Singh Oberoi. He was just Shivaay and 'just Shivaay' enjoyed having fun.

And once again he wondered how it was that this girl seemed to read his mind so accurately.

Just then another thought occurred to him.

"How are we going to get downtown?" he asked. She had refused to get into a car.

"The subway!" she replied simply.

Then seeing his incredulous expression out of the corner of her eye, she asked in surprise, "You've never traveled on the subway?"

He gulped and shook his head. He rarely ever used public transport. And he knew that people frequently judged him for it. But he had OCD issues and besides he could afford the luxury of even a private plane.

However, to his surprise, this girl didn't comment on it at all. All she said was, "Well there's a first time for everything, right?"

After a minute pause, she added in a serious tone, "It's perfectly safe, except for the shady drug dealers in hoods. Just watch out for them; they might try to rob you and they usually have guns."

At his shocked expression, she started laughing. He turned to look at her and realized that she had just been pulling his leg.

He narrowed his eyes, and pursed his lips at her. She raised her eyebrows and asked, "Really? You're going to be mad about that?"

He grinned in response and shook his head. "Nah!" he said. "Just checking if you'd call me out on it."

She grinned too. "Yes. I will." she stated. "Anyway we're at the subway station. Let's go." she added. They walked down to the platform together, still holding hands.

She then got two tickets to somewhere near Battery Park and they waited for the train to arrive. As they were waiting on the platform, there were quite a few people around, in spite of the odd timing. Shivaay began to feel a little uncomfortable. What if someone there recognized him?

"Chill Sky! Nobody will recognize you with that mask on." she said. "Besides, they're not even looking." she added.

Shivaay looked around and realized that she was right.

And then he registered the name.

"Sky?" he asked.

"Yeah! You have pretty blue eyes that remind me of the pretty blue sky. So, I'm going to call you Sky for tonight. Unless you'd prefer to be Mr. Blue Eyes of course." the girl grinned, lifting a single eyebrow as if challenging him to question her logic.

He thought about it for a moment and smiled back.

"No I like it. Actually, Mr Blue Eyes is also nice, though it sounds a bit formal." he said.

Her smile widened and she said, "Okay. So, I'll call you Mr Blue Eyes in my head and Sky aloud."

"Fine by me Luna, a.k.a the girl with the moon charm bracelet." he replied easily. He didn't know what had gotten into him, but he was enjoying this easy banter he was having with her.

"Wait! Was he actually flirting with this unknown girl?" he asked himself, surprised by his own revelation. He never flirted- he usually didn't have time for nonsense like that. And here he was flirting with a girl he barely knew!

But then, the moment he mentioned the moon charm bracelet, he noticed her smile disappear only to be replaced by a forlorn expression. She suddenly looked like she was about to cry.

"Hey! I'll pick something else if you don't like it. You don't have to cry about it." he said quickly, startled by her sudden change in expression.

She looked up at him and shook her head. "No. It's not that I don't like it. I just..." she paused then, as her voice choked a little.

She closed her eyes, took a couple of deep calming breaths, and when she opened them again her smile was back. "Sorry about that. I just remembered something. It's not important. And yes, you can call me Luna. It's a nice name." she said, her smile growing wider at the end, and the earlier twinkle in her eyes returning.

"Okay Luna! I think our train is here." he replied, pointing behind her at the train that had just pulled into the station. She turned to see and then grabbing his hand pulled him along into the somewhat crowded train.

There wasn't place to sit, but enough to stand. So, the two of them stood in a corner together.

There was a comfortable silence between them while he looked around the train and she stood leaning against the wall, next to him.

He suddenly noticed a couple of guys staring at her and smirking. He turned to look at her and saw that her eyes were closed. And the front of her dress had slipped lower showing a little of her cleavage as she stood relaxed against the wall.

He immediately turned to face her, covering her body with his own, but without actually touching her. He was however standing close enough to smell her cologne, which was nice mix of lilac and some spices. He took a deep breath in.

She opened her eyes at that moment and saw him standing over her. She raised her eyebrows in question. He shook his head and took a small step back, still making sure to hide her from view of those men. He looked over his shoulder to look at those guys and her eyes followed his gaze to see the two men who were still staring at them.

He looked back at her to see that she was already staring back at him. Their eyes met and he could see a mixture of gratitude and amusement in her black orbs. They seemed to say that she was grateful for the help even though she probably didn't need it.

The train came to a sudden halt and Shivaay jerked sideways, almost losing his balance. He instinctively raised his arms and grabbed the first thing he could find for support, which just happened to be her.

He caught her right shoulder in a hard grip and she reacted by catching him with her left arm in return and steadying him. Her movement was jerky though and he got the feeling that she had stopped herself from going for his throat with that arm.

"Careful!" she said, wincing slightly at his grip.

"Sorry. Are you okay?" he asked her. He decided to not ask her about the jerky movements for now.

"I'm fine." she replied. "Come on. This is our stop!" she added, pulling him along by the arm.

They exited the train together, walked up the steps and reached the street. Before he could really register his surroundings, she started walking again, still pulling him along.

They reached the entrance of some club and she paused turning to look at him.

"Just follow my lead!" she told him and then without waiting for a reply, she grabbed his hand and started walking toward the door of the club.

However, a tall well-built man at the entrance- security he supposed- stopped them. "Do you have an invite?" he asked in a deep baritone.

"Oh darling, you aren't going to stop me and my date from entering my best friend's party now, are you?", Luna asked the guy in a sweet voice.

She stood leaning forward a little, eyebrow raised suggestively. The man stared back at her, looking at her intently. Suddenly he smiled.

"Doll, is that you?" he asked.

Luna smiled. "You know it!" she said. They hugged briefly. On seeing that an unexpected pang of jealousy ran through Shivaay, surprising him.

"What's happening to me?" he wondered. He never got jealous! Period!

"Who's the cutie with you?" the guard asked, letting Luna go and bringing Shivaay out of his thoughts.

And that was when Shivaay realized that the man was gay. And he had just called him- Shivaay Singh Oberoi- a cutie!!! Ugh!!

"You're not Shivaay Singh Oberoi right now; you're just Shivaay. You need this tonight, so go with it!" he told himself sternly.

"Oh he's off limits darling!" Luna replied coolly. "He's mine!" she added, sounding exactly like a possessive girlfriend. And her tone pleased Shivaay for some reason.

"Aww c'mon doll! Just coz he's yours I can't even look?" the man asked softly, eyeing Shivaay, like a child eyeing candy. Shivaay started to get extremely uncomfortable under that gaze.

"No. You know I don't like anyone eyeing what's mine!" Luna said possessively. "And he's mine!" she added again, this time wrapping an arm around Shivaay's waist.

Shivaay was relieved at her declaration, though he had no idea why. He was also secretly happy that she seemed to care so much. He knew he was being stupid about this whole situation and would probably never meet her again after this night, but he was feeling high somehow and he had decided to just go with it for tonight after all.

Keeping that in mind, he returned her gesture and wrapped his own arm around her waist. She smiled at him in reply, winking discreetly.

Then she turned to 'darling' again and added, "Besides I don't think you're his type. I'm pretty sure he's straight, considering he's with me." she added. "Unless he's bisexual!" she continued thoughtfully. Turning back to look at him again, she asked, "Are you?"

Shivaay flushed. Was she really asking him that question? Seriously?

"Just go with it Shivaay! Just go with it.." he told himself taking a deep breath to calm himself down.

"No. I'm straight; not bisexual; and definitely not gay." he replied as steadily as he could.

Luna grinned, apparently reading the discomfort in his eyes. She winked at him again.

Darling' sighed. "Yeah all the good-looking ones are straight!" he said.

Luna laughed in reply. "On the contrary darling, there are more gorgeous gay guys than there are straight ones!" she said. "Don't give up hope. You'll find your man." she added, letting go of Shivaay to go pat the man on his shoulder.

The man smiled. "You're too sweet doll." he said giving her a hug again. "You and the cutie go on in!" he added, moving aside to let them in.

Luna beamed. "Thanks darling! See you later." she told him. Then she turned and held out her hand to Shivaay. "C'mon! Let's go." she said.

Shivaay smiled and took her hand, allowing her to pull him into the club.
