Exactly three weeks after Sam & II's lunch date...
The Doctors said there was nothing to worry, absolutely nothing, Ranjan had been uneasy at work, sensing speeding heart rate and was rushed to a
private hospital in Gurgaon.
She got a call from Mrs Sagar
She ran at breakneck speed to the parking lot, and grabbed her car and rushed to the hospital
Sam was already there
Things were status quo until then
"What are the doctors saying?" she panicked
"Kuch nahi... abhi taq to, they will run a battery of tests" Sam said sadly
She was being put through the wringer at home with in laws and SIL's separation drama, her mind was completely consumed by R&B and II's situation.
There was emotional gymnastics of every kind being played by everyone that knew of the couple's situation
Appa had a ligament tear afterall and had to be wrapped in a cast/wrap
It was in a way good II was staying with him, she went to work later in the day, closer to when Amma returned from work and returned by 8:30 or 9
Some days she worked wholly from home much to Ritu's chagrin
She avoided chatting with Bally at work or saying too much to anyone
Nivi was havinga blast at home, not taking any naps, getting into everything, breaking and dropping things
Like her terrible twos had begun at 14 months
Summer was roasting hot
Amma was helpless in trying to convince II
She was afraid to tell Appa everything honestly
Something nagged her that Appa would think its a good idea for II to end it. She had no clue what Appa was going through secretly.
Amma couldnt think of anything worse for II than a divorce.
Akka and Amma met a couple times during lunch to talk about it.
Akka was furious that Amma didnt have faith in Appa.
Amma admitted she felt Appa didnt think II was really happy at MM and so it was OK for her to decide whatever she wants to (basically OK to leave an uncaring man like R&B)
Amma told Akka that Appa was deeply hurt by R&B's lack of support for II's singing chance
Akka couldnt fully support Appa's stance but realized there was some truth in Appa's disappointment.
Akka tried to explain to Amma how R&B by nature seems like a very aloof man on the outside but is the exact opposite on the inside.
Amma chuckled saying she knew how R&B was and didnt need any convincing in that department, only Appa struggled to accept him
They talked and talked and talked between themselves only.
Appa stayed up at nights unable to sleep and every time Amma found him awake, he told her it was his knee that bothered him
He wondered why II wasnt going back to MM
Ranjan looked concerned he noticed every time he visited Rohini
Appa noticed how he tried to ask II a lot of questions about R&B
Appa knew the equation father and son shared so it was odd to see Ranjan be so vocal about R&B's Paris trip this time around
Much as he was principally opposed to R&B's choice of career and lifestyle, he was beginning to believe II and R&B had worked out a "rhythm"
Until the playback singing opportunity that is...
Something about his daughter during the Chennai trip didnt quite gel with him.
He didnt tell his wife.
He secretly regretted blasting his son in law but was too afraid to share it with Amma
He almost approached II one morning after Amma left for work to tell her everything
But refrained when the society caretaker stopped by
Akka hadnt said much about II at Munirka and let everyone believe Ii had returned to MM
Thankfully since Iyers moved to Rohini, Bala didnt show up unannounced
He had a long commute for his bank, he was now in Shahdara
It took him a good 1:30 to 2 hours each way, he had no energy left to drive any where come weekend.
Akka kept the development to herself
Ofcourse Sam, Amma, Appa, Tan & Akka knew, sooner or later, when the couple came out in the open then everyone wud come to know
At this time, Amma hoped she could and Akka can slowly convince II to give it another chance
There Sam was working towards it from the afternoon she met II for lunch
She didnt talk much to R&B because she was livid
When her anger cooled off a bit, she approached Tan to convince R&B to think sanely about it
Tan had spoken a couple times casually about the debt collection call center and casually probed at the end of the conversation about what R&B's gripe was.
It was still unclear to him, even after the two brief sessions of probing.
Bala wasnt aware, Akka and Sam couldnt meet explicitly, both had in laws in their house
II was at her stoic best, Amma noticed she went to bed early, didnt sing much in fact took a break from her paatu class
Didnt wear any of her new sarees for a wedding event at Rohini. Appa's colleague's daughter's at Janakpuri Barat Ghar
She met with Ranjan religiously at Spectrum everyday, in fact took two portions of lunch many days and dropped it off for him
Since she didnt get there until 2 ish on some days, she ordered him to eat it for dinner
"Hum to ghar par garam garam aapke haathon se khaayenge gudiya" he teased and then would later apologize for pestering her to return
He would visit once week and but would not stay for dinner
Nivi would kick and scream wanting to go with him as if she sensed something was off
It was definitely getting harder for II.
Janaki athai visited three times in the month and a half and found II there each time
"Can he go home tonight?" II asked eagerly
"Aaj to nahi bhejenge" Tan said walking away
"U seem preoccupied" II chased him down
"Kya baat karoon tujhse?" he asked upset
II squirmed, coloring self consciously
"Dono ne itna kaand kara hua hai" he hissed waving a finger
"Umm.. I am... I think I will... I am"
"Not necessary" he dismissed her plans before she aired them
Manya was arriving the next day
R&B was at a weeklong off the grid trekking trip in Graubunden, a remote Swiss national forest.
He was pissed with his wife, so he assumed he was OK taking off like that.
"When is R&B coming back?" II asked jittery
"Kyon? tujhe nahi pata?" Tan accused
II blushed guiltily and shook her head
"Dimaag kharab hai tum dono ka" he hissed
Sam showed up "II tum jao, Chachu is coming too, Nivi bechaari dhoondegi"
Sam sounded resigned and composed
Like she couldnt do anything any more
"Sam I am " II stopped she knew Tan was seriously angry
"Haan ghar jao" Sam hugged her warmly, and choked
"I am going to go and pick up Nivi and Lasya and take them to Malcha Marg" "Dad se mil sakti hoon kya?" she asked
"Abhi nahi, hes been sedated" Sam said
"Do they know what it is?" she asked
