------------------------
Sheesh Mahal,

The sight of the home she left two years back brought upon a wave of intense nostalgia which threatened her self-control. Many bonds were created, many colors were shown and many memories were etched. Just as the name suggested, the place witnessed her transition from a college-going simple girl she was to the sophisticated woman she became.

The entire family had come down to welcome her when she arrived to the extravagant place for the first time but only isolated and closed doors greeted her this time. She felt like an unwelcome guest, forced by the wishes of some to be present there.

Arnav did not wait for her to walk with him. He paced far ahead of her while the burden of their past weighed her down and refused to let her free of angst and darkness.

She pulled herself through the entrance of the 'palace of mirrors', she was greeted with the sight of someone dear - her ailing mother-in-law.

"Arunima Aunty.."

The inability of Arunima Singh Raizada to move made Khushi run towards her with concern but each step felt more difficult as guilt increased the burden on her heart further as she held herself partially responsible for the deplorable state of someone who loved her dearly.

"Khushi Bitiya.."

Arunima's affectionate and weak voice evoked those feelings which she had shut in the darkest abyss of her heart. Neither did she want to relive those nor did she have the guts to wish so.

"Arunima Aunty! Why did you ruin your health like this?" she questioned, taking in Arunima's pale and limp form. She had bags under her eyes and looked every bit of troubled person that she was.

"How wouldn't I, Beta? My son was unhappy and my mother was bed-ridden. No, don't even hold yourself responsible for this, Khushi. You are not. I know that you are sinless," she assured, forcing Khushi to turn her face away from her. Khushi knew that if she continued to look into the eyes of mother-like Arunima she will burst into tears and the intricate knot of her tongue would be forced open.

"Someone just never learns from their mistake.." muttered Arnav, before staging a walk out from the living room while Khushi looked on at his retreating back.

"Don't take Chotte's words seriously, Beta. He is just angry and hurt. He will realize someday that you were never wrong," said Arunima, bringing Khushi's attention back to her.

"Itna Bharosa? Why, Aunty? Why do you want to trust that person who stole every bit of your reputation in the city? Why do you want to trust that person who broke your son's heart and left him at the altar of their own wedding? Someone who gave false hopes?" questioned Khushi, unable to bear the burden of Arunima's trust on her. How could someone trust so unconditionally?

"I am a mother, Khushi. I know how my children are. And my trust is not without a base. The person whom you are talking about, allowed herself to be imprisoned for the sake of a family she chose. She is also the person in whose eyes I have seen pain listening to my son's words, the one who passed out unable to bear the happenings. I also remember that the only name she whispered in her unconscious state was the name of the person whose heart she broke. If you really wanted to break the trust, you would not be questioning my trust on you today, Beta. You would have tried to exploit it tomorrow, if you did it yesterday. You did enough to substantiate my faith on you," she answered, a weak yet loving smile on her lips.

Arunima's words brought the memories of the darkest day of her life. It reminded her of his love which placed her above the woman in front of her, the one who gave birth to him. Even in a moment of unmatchable fury, his concern for her overpowered everything else. He rushed to her aid, leaving his mother, leaving his anger, leaving his ego and leaving his own promise.

"Go take rest, Bitiya. Payal is sleeping. I'll inform her of your arrival when she wakes up.You look exhausted," whispered Arunima affectionately, effectively pulling her out of her reverie.

Khushi just nodded affirmatively and walked in a path in which her legs took her. She had walked in those corridors in the past for less than one week yet they remained so etched in her memory that she would be able to map it out even in her dreams.

She took even the changes she saw in the palatial mansion. Although still as extravagant as ever, the luster which she had known and seen was lacking. It seemed too serene, and unkempt to match with the image she had drawn in the canvas of her mind.

She mindlessly entered into the room, closing the door behind her and realized what she had done in her subconscious state when she saw Arnav Singh Raizada standing in front of her with an incredulous look plastered onto his features in his half-naked glory.

Involuntarily, Khushi's eyes ran over his rippled muscles and rugged persona suiting his profession of a security personnel. Her tantalizing gaze traveled northwards starting from his eight-pack and it was not until their eyes met did enlightenment dawn on Khushi that her gaze had ignited the fire of temper in the man in front of her again.

"May I ask what you are doing in my room, Ma'am?" he questioned, before she could leave the room on her own accord.

"I am sorry, Arnav. I came here by mistake. Since I stayed in this room last time.." Arnav's hand rose to stop her monologue mid-way.

"The last time you stayed in this room with the respect as someone whom you never wanted to be. This time, you will not be forced to be that. There is a guest room opposite to this room. You can stay in that room if you want to stay in this house or I will make the arrangements for a hotel of your status," he stated, his voice firm and cold just how she did not want it to be.

"I'll stay in the opposite room," she replied, looking down, unable to look at him.

She turned to leave when his voice stopped her mid-path.

"And yes, Ma'am. MY room doors are closed for strangers. The next time you want to enter, although I would rather not want that to happen, you are requested to seek permission," he taunted, sarcasm lining his tone.

Without turning towards him, knowing that she would not be able to hold her tears if she does, she nodded in positive before leaving the room.

How could a person change so much?

Arunuma's faith on Khushi is kinda justified.
