Colorful... lies
He texted her as he wandered the terrace, the night wasnt so muggy afterall , or so it seemed like to him
He was unconsciously avoiding his bedroom, he hadnt been there once since he returned from her apartment, earlier in the evening
He used the "powder room" when he had to go
He washed his hands there
He hadnt brushed his teeth yet
When his phone was running low on battery, he instinctively called out to Nihar to go get it from the nightstand
"What do u think of the Delhi monsoons?" he asked initiating the nightly conversation
"OK" she said
"OK" because you are waiting for a follow up Q or only OK"
"so-so" "barobar?" (are u happy with my response now?) she asked
"Can u call me?" he asked
She did...
"Did u say what you did... to make me feel better?" he asked
"Aisa kaise laga?" she asked
"I am away from you I am able to THINK" he said
"Amma kaisi hai?" she asked nervously
"Shes great" "Its like the house is transformed... things get done on time, shirts are hung in the closet, collars to the left, she even color codes them" he laughs
"Ur closet is so organized?" she asked anxiously
"U are the creative one... arent u all abt colors and imagination?"
"Kapda ko sab lekar nai" she said confused
"I was just teasing" he said "No I dont Suvechha... its Amma's organizing talent"
"Your Amma is very talented she said unsure HOW she was going to match up to a woman of her stature
She cracked a self deprecating joke
The moment she ack her attraction was she thinking it was going to end in holy matrimony?
Amma will probably never come to know this situation even exists
She was fine...
Suvi realxed... exhaling
"how is Aadhya?" he asked sincerely
"So gayi aaj, Kanika ki Mom usko arcade pe leke gayi, khoob masti.." Suvi laughed
"That was nice" he said chuckling
"Waha, Ghaziabad border pe koi to hai... it has a giant ball pit" Suvi explained
"Are u slowly liking Delhi?" he asked spontaneously
"Nasik mera favrite hai" she said immediately
"Kyon?"
"aai baba ke paas gayi, aisa mere ko lagta hai" she said smiling
"I know the feeling" he agreed compassionately
"Mere Aai ko Dilli barobar dekhne ka tha" she explained
"Aap laayin nahi?" he asked
"Laane ka tha mere ko" she said sadly
"Did u watch the news?" he asked after a long pause, letting her grieve
They chatted for an hour... over the weather news, Delhi politics, the "PR agency" spin off of Mckinsey & Morrison
"Arent u sleepy?" she asked yawning
"I am a sleep lover remember? Hum din mein sotey hain weekends mein, agar mauka haath lagey"
"Khaane se pehle? khaane ke baad?" she asked
"dono agar... proper incentive ho" he whispered
Her tone was quivering and weak
"He hadnt noticed Amma even returning, until the gate creaked
He peeked over and he saw his mother walk in weakly
She exhaled by the gate, wishing she had carried water with her?
"Neel" Suvi said, seeking attention
"haan?" he asked diverting his concentration back to the call
"Mai soyegi" she said politely
"Hum jaayen soney?" he taught her proper Hindi
"Itna pakka Hindi kaise bolegi mai? Haan Marathi bol sakti hai" she smiled
"Good night Suvechha" he muttered
She nodded "U 2" she said
They had spent an hour talking, like husband and wife... unaware they had such good rhythm to it
He went down, and found his Amma sitting on the couch
Staring at Neel-nihar's unfinished chess game
He paused, thoughtfully
She made two movoves and retracted
And leaned back and shut her eyes
He checked on Nihar, the kid slept face down, he turned him to his side, peeled the book off the bed
Increased the cooling, turned off the lights, shut the door, went back in and kissed him many times on his hair and cheek
Nihar stirred... and smiled
Went back out and found Amma snoozing
"Amma jaayen so jaayen" he said softly, prying the phone off her hand
She woke and yawned
"There is something about vacations... the brain tricks u and makes u sleep more" she chuckled
"Because it knows the working woman wont take a break otherwise" he said gently
"Aap kidhar they?" Amma asked pulling her feet up sitting on the couch in a meditating position
"Chhath pe they hum" he said
"akele kyon rehte hain aap, hamare saath chalte beta?" Amma squeezed her son's fist
"Phone pe baat kar rahe the"
"Kis se?" Amma asked
"Ruchi se" he lied
