We dont know what convo ranjan and ma had that night...he might have just felt comfort in her...she might have assumed he doesn't care enough due to insecurity... she might not have questioned him
He might have gone back with a determination to clear things out but next he gets the news ma is no more...his strength and reason to prove himself might have died...her death might be a bigger mess to him than this issue
And his kids don't care for him...when Sam and Manny dint question he don't need to prove it to them
Its clear his expectations from dude are dam low...so he must not have seen a point in proving himself
He might be blaming his carelessness for Ma's death

II is different for him.

In one of the chapters before marriage after Ranajn asked II's hand for RnB.

RnB's internal struggle was mentioned.

In that he says he don't want to be Ranjan .He just kept himself in situation thinking he is cheating II.

That was the thought that first provoked him over marriage.

RnB don't want his name is same column as his father (destroyed a girl's life)

RnB is not gonna leave her at any cost.he loves her so much and she meant more than anything to him
