CHAPTER 18. TWO MONTHS LATER!

Two months passed since the fire incident as Khushi called it. Khushi sighed as she focused on her dictation. The deadline for the bet was coming near so Khushi was very focused on her reading. As she stumbled on some words, her eyes went to the doll in front of her. She smiled mischievously and hit the doll's head. "Best of Luck! Best of Luck!", the doll crooned and Khushi giggled. She smiled as she remembered the moment she first time she saw the doll.

"Best of Luck! Best of Luck!", the doll murmured and Khushi let out a surprised laugh.

"Yeh kya hai? What is this Prem?", Khushi looked at the doll with wide eyes and amusement on her face.

Prem shrugged, "They told me that you missed a lot of training time due to your rest days. So I thought I should bring you something that would cheer you and motivate you!"

Khushi smiled brightly at Prem and hugged the doll, "Thank you Prem!"

Khushi sighed as she came out of those memories. Prem had become a regular fixture at Shantivan after the fire. He would come daily at the evening with a bouquet of flowers in his hand and entertain her with interesting observations he had done in the office. Few days after the fire, Khushi had trouble breathing and she had to be admitted. Only there it came out that the smoke had done some damage to her lungs and she was put on bed rest and on innumerable medicines for atleast 2 months. Even now after two months had passed, Khushi still had to continue some of the medicines. Her training was put on pause for 2 months even though she was allowed to move after few days passed. She was only allowed to get back to them after the Doctor had given her clean bill of health. But Khushi was Khushi! She was not going to allow some fire incident to ruin her dreams. She started reading the newspapers that arrived at Shantivan, so that she was well versed with the latest news. After all, an event manager had to be in touch with current news. So Khushi continued her study even on bed rest.

As she placed the doll back, Khushi turned around and her eyes widened when she saw Arnav passing by the door. She smiled softly. Arnavji! Her heart skipped a beat at his name. But Khushi was not surprised by this. This was something usual for Khushi since the fire. If the fire had made her realise how much Arnav cared for her, the days after the fire only endeared Arnav more to her. She still remembered the moment when she had trouble breathing. The expression on Arnav's face was nothing short of pain and devastation.

"Hey Devi Maiyya! You want me to get back on heel walking?", Khushi pouted. It was few days after the fire and Arnav decided that it was time Khushi got back to her training.

"Yes! I want you on heels!", Arnav growled. Yesterday he had seen Prem and Khushi hug and since then he had been grumpy and growly. Why he was like that? Khushi did not know. All she knew was that something was off with Arnav since he met Prem.

"By the way, what is wrong with walking on heels? You have done that enough times!", Aakash wondered.

Khushi huffed, "Exactly! I have done it enough times! Can't you give me something tough?"

Arnav rolled his eyes, "You want tough? What do you expect me to teach you? How to do rope climbing? Khushi! You are training to be an event manager, not a mountaineer!"

Khushi pouted at his anger filled tone and silently complied with his orders. As she sat down to wear the six inch stilettos, Khushi suddenly felt unable to breathe. As she tried to breathe properly her eyes went to where Arnav and Aakash were discussing something. Anjali was in her room talking to her husband on phone. "Arnav Sir!", Khushi tried to call for no voice came out of her mouth. She clasped her hands around her throat as she tried to breathe but every breath was getting tougher and tougher to take and Khushi was on the verge of fainting. Just as she lost consciousness Arnav looked in her direction and Khushi was shocked to see horror and anguish on his face, as if his worst fear had come true. After that, Khushi fainted and she knew no more.

Khushi let out a deep breath as she came out of that memory. The expression on Arnav's face before she fainted remained imprinted in her mind and Khushi knew that she would never forget it. She smiled as she remembered how Arnav took care of her once she was discharged from hospital and confined to the bed.

"Khushi! You haven't eaten your lunch yet!", Arnav roared as he entered her new room.

Khushi looked up from the book she was reading, "Not hungry Arnavji! Plus this story is so interesting!" She went back to reading the book and was surprised when the book was pulled away from her hand.

"Arnav Sir!", Khushi whined as she glared at Arnav in annoyance.

Arnav did not even notice her glare as he took the plate filled with food left on the table nearby and pushed a spoonful into her mouth before she could close it.

Khushi blinked in surprise as she started to chew. Arnavji was feeding her lunch! Hey Devi Maiyya!

As Arnav fed her the daal rice spoon by spoon Khushi could not look away from Arnav. Even when Arnav scolded her in between the spoon feeding Khushi did not look away. She silently had her lunch and the medicine Arnav handed over to her. As Arnav was about to move away, he looked at her, his eyes soften and his expression uncharacteristically tender, "Khushi! If you don't take care of yourself, then how will you get well? You have to eat properly and on time from now on, ok?" He wagged his finger at her and Khushi nodded. At that time Khushi would have nodded to anything because the expression on Arnav's face spoke to her heart the words neither Arnav nor Khushi could say or hear.

Khushi smiled softly as she remembered that moment. Since then Arnav had made his habit to monitor her intake. He would call her from Office to make sure that she ate and during dinner he actually came and sat by her till she finished everything on her plate. Khushi was beyond touched by Arnav's gesture. Then there was Arnav's habit of putting her to bed like a small child. Khushi giggled as she remembered that happening for the first time.

"Arnav Sir! Are you out of your mind?", Khushi shouted as she stared at Arnav with horror.

"Arre! What wrong did I say? I said go to sleep or I will throw you onto the bed and tuck you in! Now what is wrong with that?", Arnav roared back.

Khushi looked at Arnav incredulously and then looked at Aakash and Anjali who were standing behind Arnav giggling amongst themselves. Sensing her glance both shrugged sadly and then started silently laughing. Khushi shook her head. Those two were useless when it comes to saving me! She went back to glaring at her teacher.

"Hey Devi Maiyya! Arnav Sir, I am not five year old!", Khushi complained.

"You behave like one!", Arnav spat.

Khushi huffed, "Let me sleep on my own time!"

Arnav shook his head, "No way! Doctor told you to be in bed by 10 and sleep for atleast 8 to 10 hours and that is what you are going to do!"

Khushi glared at him, "Doctor told me to sleep for 8 to 10 hours but he never said anything about being in bed by 10!"

"Oh really? Fine!", Arnav snarled, "My house, my rules! You get in by 10 whether you like it or not! It is unhealthy to stay up late!"

Khushi slapped her forehead, "Hey Devi Maiyya! Kahaan fasaa diya! Please explain to Arnav Sir how ridiculous he is being!"

Arnav by then had enough of Khushi's rebelling. If she was not going to bed on time, then he will do it himself.

Before Khushi knew it, she was lifted up in bridal style and placed on the bed. Khushi was shocked! She stared at Arnav with wide eyes and open mouth as Arnav pulled the bedsheet and covered her with it. Khushi was speechless. Arnav stalked off mumbling about insolent students who cannot even take care of themselves. Khushi was about to sat up in shock when suddenly Arnav turned and roared back, "Get down you woman! You won't get up till morning, got it?"

Khushi, shocked by his sudden shout, meekly nodded while hiding her face under the covers. Arnav walked away and Aakash and Anjali followed him still laughing.

Khushi pouted as she remembered that moment. Since that ill fated night, Khushi got under the covers before 10 just to not be embarrassed by Arnav lifting her. She always sensed him pass by inspecting if she is in bed or not. As she remembered those moments, another moment came to her mind and she burst out laughing. The expression on Arnav's face, Hey Devi Maiyya! He deserved it. He used to barge into my room anytime and everytime to check on me, right? He used to claim it was to see if I start talking in English or in Hindi when surprised. According to him, when someone is surprised, they talk in the language they are most comfortable with. And till I reacted in English, he would keep barging on me he had claimed. But I know better. Language was just an excuse. You just wanted to see I am ok! Well, you deserved that embarrassment. Wanted to check my language right? I made you check yours! Ha! Khushi continued to laugh as that memory came to fore.

Khushi sighed as she came out of the bathroom in her towel. She had once again forgotten to take her clothes with her. Paglaitth Khushi! Don't you remember that Arnav Sir has the habit of barging into your room unannounced and at anytime to check on you and your command on English. And yet you forget to either lock your door or take your clothes with you to take bath. Stupid girl! Holding the towel tighter to her chest, she walked to the door with the intention to close it. And of course, Arnav took that exact moment to barge in.

"Eeep!", Khushi squeaked.

Arnav's eyes widened and he stared at her.

Khushi felt her embarrassment increase, "Arnavji! Humein kya dekh rahe ho? Palto!"

"Khushi! English!", Arnav barked.

"English gaya tel lene! Turn around you idiot!", Khushi spat and Arnav turned around right away.

Khushi glared at the man, "Can't you knock?"

"Can't you lock?", Arnav retorted.

"Hey Devi Maiyya! Why are you reciting the lines from Maine Pyar Kiya'?"

"Kya?", Arnav turned around and looked at her in confusion.

"Arnavji! Udhar dekho!", Khushi screeched and Arnav turned around again.

"Khushi! You really need to start speaking in English!", Arnav ordered her.

"English?", Khushi screeched, "That's all you care about! You are barging into my room unannounced..."

"Barging!", Arnav commented sounding thoughtful, "You are starting to use new words! Good for you, Khushi!"

Khushi's jaw dropped open. He barged into... uff... entered my room unannounced when I am in towel and instead of apologizing he is lecturing me! Hey Devi Maiyya! I am going to kill him! She grabbed the nearest object, one of the books, and threw it at Arnav's back, "Get out!", she growled, "Get out before I kill you!"

Arnav turned around, "Khushi! There is no need to be violent!"

BAM! The next book hit Arnav square on his face, "KHUSHI!", he roared.

"OUT!", Khushi roared back as she lifted another book and threw that on Arnav too.

Finally Arnav got the hint and moved out. Khushi ran after him shouting, "And if you came in without knocking again, I will cut you into pieces and feed you to the dogs! Get that?"

Saying her piece, Khushi slammed the door.

Khushi continued to laugh as she thought of that day. Since that day, Arnav never entered her room without knocking, even if the door was left wide open and Khushi was sitting in front of him smiling at him. Khushi chuckled and then something else came to her mind and she frowned. Arnavji would always check in on me constantly every time. But why did he keep his distance from me when Prem arrived? Every evening Prem would arrive to spend time with me and Arnavji would vanish till Prem left. He won't come near my room, not even to scold me for exerting myself. Why? She remembered the first time she noticed this happening. It was the day after the discharge from hospital. Since the fire, Prem would come over to meet her in the evenings. His excuse was that he was getting bored but she knew he was here to cheer her up as she hated being restricted to almost no activity.

"Look Khushi! Look what I found for you!", Prem spoke as he pulled out something from his bag.

Khushi's eyes widened as she took in the thing in front of her, "Saanp seedi!", she squealed loudly.

"Errr... I assume that's the Indian name to this game!", Prem looked confused.

Khushi giggled, "Yes! Saap means snake, seedi means ladder!"

"Oh! Of course!", Prem nodded, "Come! Lets play!"

Khushi nodded and both chose their tokens. Just then Anjali and Aakash were passing by and Prem called them to join the game. Anjali and Aakash hesitated but when Khushi pouted, they agreed. Next thing Khushi knew all four were laughing and enjoying the game. Khushi was watching her token come down a snake, when she felt the sensation of being watched. She looked up to see Arnav passing by the window towards the door of her room. She smiled as she waited for him to knock and enter but her smile vanished when he simply passed by. Khushi frowned.

And since that Khushi started observing how Arnav never entered her room as long as Prem was around. But why? Khushi wondered. Did they hate each other? No! If so, then Prem would have told her. Family feud? No no! Naaniji and Prem's Mom are good friends! Then what? Khushi could not understand. Khushi shrugged. She did not want to worry about that! She would rather worry about something else, like Arnav sending her mixed signals. She smiled sadly as she remembered one of those instances...

And that's all for today folks,

Next up, the memories continue and then a song sequence comes!

Also, Chapter 2 has been translated into English. So those who could not understand those updates due to language barrier, go and check them out. I will translate Chapter 3 when I update next time!

Thank you, take care and have fun,

Kalpana
