She said, I was seven and you were nine
I looked at you like the stars that shined
In the sky, the pretty lights
And our daddies used to joke about the two of us
Growing up and falling in love and our mamas smiled
And rolled their eyes and said oh my my my
"Rey! Give me my cookie back!" seven year old Taani yelled after her best friend, as he ran away with the last cookie.
"Why? I want the cookie. And I'm older than you so I get the last cookie" Rey said stubbornly.
The angry brunette couldn't help but chuckle at her nine year old best friend. Their parents had been best friends ever since forever. Rey had been two when Taani was born and ever since then, he felt a strange responsibility towards the young girl.
"Pweese Rey?" Taani pulled on a puppy dog pout, making his resolve melt to the ground.
"Fine! Here you go" Rey said handing the treat to her. "You know I can't resist when you make such faces" Rey pulled her into his arms, hugging her tightly and protectively.
The parents sat on the porch of Rey's house looking at the kids. The fathers grinned widely at each other.
"I want them to get married when they grow up" Rishi, Taani's dad joked looking at the kids who were now chasing each other.
"You took the words from my mouth" Gaurav Singhaniya laughed as Taani tackled his son to the ground.
"Oh my! You guys have a very creative imagination" the little girl's mother, Anupriya said shaking her head at the men, before turning back to Shweta Singhaniya and continuing their conversation.
Take me back to the house in the backyard tree
Said you'd beat me up, you were bigger than me
You never did, you never did
Take me back when our world was one block wide
I dared you to kiss me and ran when you tried
Just two kids, you and I...
Oh my my my my
A now ten year old Rey trapped Taani against the wall of their treehouse. "Why did you knock down my block house? I and Swayam were going to see whose one was bigger. And now you ruined mine"
"I'm sorry. It was an accident. I walked past it and my hand hit it." Taani whimpered looking at the ground.
"No. You broke my tower and now I'm going to hit you." Rey raised his hand in a fist but stopped when he saw the tears of fear running down her face. "I'm sorry I was joking. I would never hit you. Tell me what I can do to make it up to you"
Taani thought for a while before answering. "I dare you to kiss me" She knew he couldn't do it.
Rey's eyebrows rose. He smirked and leaned towards him best friend. Taani eyes grew wide when she realized what he was doing. Squealing, she pushed past him and ran away.
Rey chuckled as he looked at the girl running away. "I knew she couldn't do it"
Well, I was sixteen when suddenly
I wasn't that little girl you used to see
But your eyes still shined like pretty lights
And our daddies used to joke about the two of us
They never believed we'd really fall in love
And our mamas smiled and rolled their eyes
And said oh my my my...
"Aunty is it normal for me to feel this scared?" eighteen year old Rey asked his girlfriend's mother.
Anupriya chuckled. "Yes beta. It's perfectly normal."
"Haan toh phir theek hain" Rey mumbled.
Anupriya opened her mouth to say something but was cut off by a soft voice saying. "How do I look?"
Rey turned around to face the beautiful girl, who was standing at the middle of the stairs in a white dress, complimenting his white shirt and blue jeans. Rey stared in amazement. He knew she was beautiful, but right now she looked like a Greek goddess.
"You look beautiful Taani" He breathed.
Taani smiled at her boyfriend. "Thank you Mr. Singhaniya. You clean up pretty well as well"
"Yeah well, first date and all" Rey shrugged as he grinned. "Ready to go?" he said taking her hand.
"Yep" Taani nodded. "See you late mom, dad" Taani yelled as she was pulled towards the door by Rey.
"Told you, they'd fall in love" Guarav said slapping hands with Rishi, while their wives just shook their head.
Take me back to the creek beds we turned up
Two A.M. riding in your truck and all I need is you next to me
"Rey! I have school tomorrow. Where are we going?" Taani asked Rey as they sat side by side in his truck, as he drove. It was two in the night and this guy wanted to take her on her on a surprise date.
Rey just grinned at her. "We're almost there."
Taani huffed in annoyance. She hated surprises.
"We're there!" Rey exclaimed loudly. He threw the door open of his side rushed to her side.
Stepping out the car, Taani gasped. In front of her lay a beautiful meadow. Flowers, grass, the whole picture that described a perfect fairytale.
Overwhelmed Taani turned towards Rey to see him forwarding a red rose towards her.
"I love you" that was all he said. Taani threw herself into his arms and kissed him.
"I love you too" Taani whispered against his lips, and then kissed him again. Rey kissed her back grinning. She was officially his.
Take me back to the time we had our very first fight
The slamming of doors instead of kissing goodnight
You stayed outside till the morning light
Oh my my my my
"Don't talk to me" Taani yelled closing the door of her room at his face. She was pissed. Like seriously positively pissed.
A**hole. Taani thought angrily.
They just had their first fight. She couldn't even remember why they had fought in the first place, but she knew it was something that it was worth making her this angry.
The next morning Taani opened the door of her room to see Rey sitting on the foot of her door.
Just as the door opened Rey shot to his feet.
"You stayed the whole night?" Taani asked.
Rey shrugged in answer. "I'm sorry"
Taani sighed in resignation and walked into his arms hugging him. "I'm sorry too"
Rey tightened his arms around her. "I love you" he mumbled into her hair. He heard something that seemed a lot like an "I love you too" being mumbled against his chest and grinned.
Their first official fight was over.
A few years had gone and come around
We were sitting at our favorite spot in town
And you looked at me, got down on one knee
A twenty four year old Rey and a twenty two year old Taani walked around the park, in utter silence. Rey started to pull Taani towards their favorite bench, a bench they always sat on ever since they started coming here as kids. He sat her down and went on his knees sitting in front of her.
"Okay this is it" Rey sighed as he reached to her pocket, pulled something out of it hiding it from her view.
"Rey, what's wrong?" Taani asked concerned.
Ignoring her Rey continued. "Okay. Taani, you've been my best friend for twenty four years of my life and my girl friend for seven of them. And these seven years have been the best years of my life. I love you with all my heart and I want to spend the rest of my life with you" Taani had tears rolling down her eyes and gasped as rey shifted so that he was on one knee in front of her. He pulling out a blue box and opened it revealing its contents. "Taani Shekawat, will you marry me?"
He waited for her answer while she just gawked at him. He began to panic when he got no answer. As he was about to ask again Taani clasped her hand around his and sniffed. "Yes! Of course I'll marry you"
Rey broke out into a huge smile before standing up bring her with him and slipping the ring into her left ring finger. Pulling her into his arms he kissed her lovingly and passionately.
Take me back to the time when we walked down the aisle
Our whole town came and our mamas cried
You said I do and I did too
Taani held onto her father's arm as she walked down the aisle. The families had decided on a Christian wedding because Taani had wanted a wedding like this ever since she was a kid. And Rey had been determined to give his love everything that she had dreamed of, starting now.
She walked to the end of the aisle and turned to her father. Rishi lifted the veil and kissed her cheek lightly. Taani smiled at the man and said. "I'll always be your little girl". He smiled back at her.
His little girl had grown up, to be such a beautiful woman.
Rey walked down the few stairs and helped her up to the place they were suppose to stand at. He smiled brightly at her and took her hands squeezing them lovingly. Mouthing a "I love you" at her, his grinned widened as she blushed.
Everything was perfect.
They half listened as the priest gave the usual speech. He then, told Taani to say her vows.
"Rey. You've always been my best friend, my companion, my partner in crime. And today, standing here, with you, it seems awfully surreal. You've always been the guy I would go crying to in my problems, you would make me laugh with your extreme idiocy. You are that one person, who I know, that would keep me happy. I know that when in need you will be my best friend, my brother and my husband. And I promise you that I would keep you happy, and would try to become all that you want me to be. I love you, Rey. I promise to love you eternally. And I promise to be yours forever" When she finished she had small tears of happiness running down her cheek.
"Reyaansh?" The priest urged him.
"Taani. It seems like yesterday when we were running around in the backyard of your house fighting over a small cookie. You have been that one person who I would gladly die for. I promise to give you all that you need, to love you all my life, to keep you happy and to cherish you. I promise that I would be there in the times of distress and happiness by your side. I promise to pick you up whenever you would fall, hold your hand wherever you stumble. Taani, we have a long way to go. But we will start with forever."
"I now present you husband and wife" the minister announced. The mother's stood the side of the aisle, and wiped their tears.
Taani sniffed in contentment. She had her world standing before her. She had everything she needed. She had Rey. Her best friend, her soul mate, her and now her husband.
They exchanged rings and rey kissed her on her cheek softly.
"Forever" He whispered.
Taani nodded. "Forever"
Take me home where we met so many years before
We'll rock our babies on that very front porch
After all this time, you and I
"Baby. Can you take Suhana while I get Adi some milk?" Rey asked his wife of five years. Nodding she took the small girl from him and led her inside.
Taani walked into her childhood home. After her father had passed away a few months before, she and Rey had bought the house form her mother who had decided to move into a smaller house few miles away. She walked into the living room to see a sight that warmed her heart. There sat Rey holding a two year old Adi in his arms, feeding him while the little boy watched his father curiously.
Taani couldn't have asked for a better life. She had everything she needed. She had two beautiful kids, who were two years apart, Suhana being the oldest, the perfect house and a loving husband who stood by her side always.
I'll be eighty-seven; you'll be eighty-nine
I'll still look at you like the stars that shine
In the sky, oh my my my...
An eighty seven year old Taani sat on the porch of her daughter's house, looking at her grandchildren playing. She smiled lightly at her husband who sat next to her who smiled back at her.
He leaned towards her pecked her forehead slightly. Even after all these years the love Rey and Taani shared hadn't decreased. If not, it only kept growing.
They had meant what they had said. This was something that would last a life time. This was their life. This was everything to them. The promise they had made to each other on their wedding was still fresh in their minds even after all these years. The word they had uttered that day were still the same. It will always be...
Forever.
There. I hope you liked it. 😃 😊
