cool update. i like the mystery but i think i agree that tom is good even though he does have some secret...
Tom who had been touched by Ginny so deeply now suddenly remembered someone who had only recently lost his mother. He would never want that for any child. He had to see Alex before midnight. It was 8 now, dinner was about to be over. He decided to call Alex in his office.
He sent a patronus down in the Kitchens for tea and sweets to be sent into his office and another one to Danny to inform Alex to visit him in his office after dinner. He himself wasn't feeling hungry but the moment he entered his office he realized he didn't have another option but to eat something as Duds and Porch sat waiting for him inside with a platter full of sandwiches and Pumpkin juice.
"Everything went ok?" Porch asked. He had been quite worried when Harry had called Tom in his office.
"Yeah, we even drank together. Don't worry, everything's fine. Is everything ok between the two of you?" He turned to Duds.
"Yeah. By the way, you were right, I shouldn't have been hiding. Harry would have preferred it if he had known before."
"Yeah, he told me so."
"Professors." A little squeaky voice called out from the doorway.
"Come in, please." Tom allowed the little house elf that was standing in the doorway carrying a staggering tray in his little hands. He took the tray from him and put it on the table. Poor thing needn't have carried it up here. Tom knew this one. He had often spoken to him when Porch and Duds had been busy and he had no one to give him company for a cup of tea. Days like those he usually took his tea down in the Kitchens and there this one would serve him all too well. "How are you doing, Twix?"
"Me fine, Tom, I means Professor Riddle, pardon me forgetfulness."
"You can call me Tom. Everyone does." Tom smiled widely and saw Twix relax as well. He knew Twix was very sensitive about House elf rules. Although, Hermione Granger's filed petition regarding House Elf Right Protection had now been passed and several House elves had taken advantage of the liberties granted by it, Twix sometimes forgot about it. He wore proper clothes and socks and scarves but still felt quite inferior to Wizards.
These days House elves even had representatives in the Ministry of Magic just like Goblins and Giants and Half giants and certain other creatures that were considered intellectual. Even Centaurs had agreed to share a table with the Wizarding bureaucrats.
In such conditions, House elves ought to feel a bit more confident and expressive. Tom had so read in an interview of Hermione Granger. He had been quite overwhelmed by her efforts to improve living conditions of House elves. No one gave them enough importance. But he knew they were worth much more.
The problem with Twix was that he listened to his old Aunt a little too much. She was really old and sick now but she still spoke of older times when House elves had no representation at all.
"How's Winky these days?" He asked him about her.
"Old Winky's lost too much weight, hers heart is leaving the living, she wants to begone nows. I wishes I could help hers wish."
"Don't be like that. She's old and tired but you are not. You can keep her happy." Tom tried to encourage him. "Do me a favor, will you? Tell her I was asking about her health. She would feel good about it."
Twix shook his head. His tennis ball sized blue eyes widening and his ears flapping about him. "If I tells her I speaks to Tom again, she does not lets me leave the Kitchens again. She does not likes the new bill the Ministry approves. She knows Tom tells me to follow it."
"How does she know about the bill?" Porch asked quite surprised.
"Ministry sends some represets or something-_"
"Representatives?" Duds helped him there.
"Yes, thanks you, those for 'awareness of the masses' as they calleds it. Winky was not happy abouts it. She forbade me to see them and talks to Tom."
Tom knew Winky didn't like him much. He had seen it on the rare occasion she had tried to serve him when she had wanted to keep Twix away from him but he couldn't help staying in touch with Twix, after all, Twix didn't have many friends among the House elves either.
"It's quite alright." Tom smiled relaxing Twix's anxious expressions. "At least, take care of yourself."
Little Twix nodded and left them alone to eat.
"Why have you called for tea?" Porch asked.
"I have called Alex after dinner." Tom replied.
Neither Porch nor Duds said anything. Only this morning none of them had the courage to see the boy and now Tom had shown the heart to do it. Perhaps, once he'll have spoken to him, then they would be able to do so as well.
Tom didn't ask them to stay either. He knew Alex wasn't their responsibility, he was his.

BOOKMARKED
Tom sat behind his desk once Duds and Porch had left. He was feeling quite anxious now. What was he going to say to him? Before Tom could think over it anymore there was a soft knock on the door. He looked up to find a little boy standing in the doorway. It was Alex. He was quite skinny; he had black hair like Neville's but his features resembled that of Hannah's, something that Neville had always been very happy about. He had a heart shaped small face, fair complexion and he looked very beautiful when he smiled. Tom had seen his photograph that Neville had always kept with him in which he had been smiling. Right now, however, he looked quite sad.
"Come in." Tom invited him in. "Have a seat." He offered him to sit in the chair opposite his.
Alex obliged without a word.
"Would you like some tea?" Tom asked him politely and for the first time gained his full attention.
"No, thank you, Professor."
"Call me Tom." Tom corrected him smiling at him but to his dismay Alex's face remained unchanged. He simply nodded. "Don't you like tea?" Tom asked him, he wanted him to say something, anything that allowed him to express what he was feeling.
Alex looked like he was irritated by this entire conversation, like he had no intentions of telling anyone if he liked tea or not. He looked up at him and replied rather rudely. "No, I don't."
Tom smiled at him. "Very well, then perhaps, you would like to have some Pumpkin juice." He said and without asking him poured some into a glass and shoved it towards him.
"I am fine, thank you." He replied not taking it.
Tom bent forward boring into his eyes. "I insist."
Alex realized he didn't exactly have an option. He would have to take it. He took it took a gulp and as if he couldn't hold it right he dropped it. As the glass smashed, the juice spread all over the floor drenching Alex's own robes. He stood up immediately. "I am so sorry, I didn't meant to, it slipped--_"
"Don't worry, calm down." Tom stood up too. He had been observing him closely. He knew, he had dropped the glass intentionally. He didn't want to talk to anyone. Tom got out from behind his desk, pulled out his wand, swished it once and left everything clean and shining behind. "Reparo!" The glass mended itself. Tom put it back on the table. "Augamenti!" He filled it up with water and handed it to Alex as he stood watching.
This time, he took it, drank and put it back on the table. "Can I go now?" He asked the moment he was done.
"No." Tom replied. He sighed deeply. He had no idea Alex was that withdrawn to everything. "I called you here to talk to you." He motioned to him to sit down in his chair. He did. This time Tom sat in the chair beside him. He felt even the table was creating a distance between them. "How are you feeling?"
Alex looked up at him quite frustrated. "I am fine."
Tom raised his eyebrows. "Then perhaps you would like to explain to me why you were not present in my class today."
Alex's ears turned red. He had forgotten. Lily must have lied to Tom as well. She had lied to Uncle Ron. Even Uncle Harry had visited him during the day and now it was Tom who had called him to lecture him. Why wouldn't they all just leave him alone?
Tom knew exactly what Alex was thinking. He had to get him out of his misery.
"I wasn't feeling well in the morning, but I am fine now."
Tom nodded. "That's good. Have you visited Madam Brown?"
"No, I didn't need to. I told you, I felt fine afterwards."
"Very well." Tom smiled again. He had to make an effort to lift his mood. "So, did you like it here, at Hogwarts?"
Alex looked like he had not heard him properly. He was thinking about it but before Tom knew what to do he had stood up and burst out like a Volcano that had simply been waiting for an opportunity to do so.
"I hate it here, I hate everyone trying to talk to me, to get me to listen to them. I hate being here, I don't want to be told what to do every second!"
Tom, who had no idea what to do, decided to begin by leveling things first. He knelt down in front of him so him and Tom were of the same height. He could look into his eyes that way.
"Alex, no one is telling you what to do. Everyone just wants the best for you."
"I don't want the best! I just want to be left alone!" He turned away from Tom.
Tom grabbed his shoulder and turned him back to himself. "Look, I know, everything that has happened has been harder on you than anyone. But you need to understand something. Staying away from everyone will not help you, it will make you feel worse. Do you think your father would be pleased if he knew you wanted to stay shut up in your dormitory all day? Let me tell you, he wouldn't be. Because, he told me, that he wanted his son, he wanted you to enjoy this place as much as he did. He wanted you to make the most of your time at Hogwarts, as he knew as well as I do, that very few get the chance to be here."
"I don't want to be here and as for my dad, I don't know what he would have wanted! He's not here, is he?!"
Tom could see the bottled up anger bursting out of Alex. In a way, even if he was voicing everything he was feeling, it was good for him.
"Aright, if you don't want to be here, then where do you want to go?" Tom asked him with complete calmness, his expression quite blank.
"I want to be out there, looking for the man who killed them! I want to kill him!"
Tom was transfixed where he knelt. Alex had been hurting so much and no one had a clue about it. "Don't say that!" Tom nearly scolded him as his hold tightened on him. "Listen to me, there are wizards looking for that man, there are Aurors, they work for the Ministry of Magic, they will find him and they will punish him. You don't have to go looking for anyone." Alex looked like he didn't believe him. "I will find him, Alex." Tom couldn't stop himself. "I have to, I don't know, if Neville ever told you, but he named me your Godfather. I will look out for you, I will do this for you. You don't have to find anyone, I will do it for you... you hear me?" Tom looked into his eyes but felt his heart break when thick tears leapt down Alex's eyes and he broke away from Tom backing away as if he didn't want to believe him.
"You won't find him! You are lying! Just like Uncle Harry, he doesn't know who killed them and neither do you!" He wiped his face and took a deep breath to control his shaking voice. "Yes, dad told me about you, but it doesn't matter, does it? You weren't there when I needed you! You didn't save me, Porch did! You weren't at their funeral! YOU didn't see them die, I did!"
"Alex--_" As Alex ran out of his office Tom felt his own patience leaving him. Tears leapt down his own eyes as the full impact of Alex's words hit him. He didn't even try getting back to his feet, he simply knelt there letting his grief get the best of him.
10 minutes later, Hermione sat in Harry's office explaining everything she had seen to Harry, Ron and Ginny. They had been sitting here when Dumbledore had informed them that Tom hadn't returned to his room after dinner. Hermione had then adorned the invisibility cloak and gone looking for him starting with his office. Surprisingly, she had found him sitting there with Alex. But she hadn't known then that things would turn so catastrophic within minutes. When she was leaving, she felt as if, Alex's words had torn him apart. She had quickly returned to Harry's office wiping her own tears off.
"He said all that?" Ron was flabbergasted. "And we had no clue!"
"You're right. None of us noticed Alex wasn't taking all of this as calmly as he should have." Harry replied. "Didn't any of the other children mention anything strange about his behavior?
Ginny shook her head. "No one said a word, and I thought perhaps Alex hadn't been talking to them."
"He hadn't been." Hermione replied. "He wasn't even talking to Tom. He had to work a good deal before Alex burst out. To be honest, I think, it was only for good that he did. He would be feeling a little light by now." Hermione stopped hesitating a little.
"But..." Ron egged her on to finish what she wanted to say.
"But I think his behavior was quite terrible and for Tom, may be a little too devastating."
"How so?" Ginny asked with apparent concern.
"You should have seen him Ginny. When Alex said he was the one who had seen them die not Tom, you should have seen his face. He sat kneeling as if Alex had just shattered him and he wasn't even capable of gathering himself."
"Do I hear concern in your voice?" Dumbledore spoke up from the portrait.
Hermione flushed. She made up her mind. "Yes." She retorted at Dumbledore. She turned to Harry. "After everything I have seen, Harry, one thing is certain he couldn't have killed Neville and Hannah. I don't trust him much but I am sure he had nothing to do with their demise."
Harry nodded. "I think no one in this room disagrees, Hermione. At the moment, however, I am quite concerned about Alex. I want him watched all the time."
Everyone nodded. They all had people and in Dumbledore's case portraits who would help them out. They all understood and felt their responsibility towards Alex.
