The moment Tom stepped out of the Headmaster's office he found himself, again, standing face to face with Hermione Granger. She was again staring at him alarmingly. Tom stood transfixed not knowing what to do.

"What?!" She suddenly snapped him and he realized she wasn't disillusioned and following him. How stupid was he? She was obviously here to see Harry. "Move aside!" She snapped him again.

"I am sorry." He stumbled out of her way immediately.

Hermione had just opened the door when she realized she had been utterly rude. She was after all still embarrassed at the fact that he had seen her standing there not even trying to help him. She turned back to him. "It's alright." She said after a moment and went inside.

"Hey." Ron who was following Hermione up the spiraling staircase greeted Tom extending his hand.

Tom took it nodding to him. "Professor."

"Call me Ron." Ron grinned. "No need to ask what to call you, eh, Tom?" He winked at him.

Tom smiled widely. "I am hardly qualified to be called a Professor, and besides, I don't mind being called by my first name."

"Of course, you don't! Not when pretty little witches call you out by it!" Ron winked again.

Tom flushed a lighter shade of pink. "It's really not that, I promise." He replied concealing a grin himself. He was seeing a Ronald Weasley he had never seen before. The last time he had seen him, Ron had nearly blown him off when he was looking for his room, right now, however, he was quite comfortable with him, in fact, more than comfortable. "By the way, with everything that happened at the start of term, I never really got to welcome you." And before Ron could stop him, Tom hugged him. "Welcome to Hogwarts!" He greeted him breaking away from him smiling exposing all 32 of his teeth. He had always greeted newcomers to Hogwarts this warmly. Only this year, he never got a chance. Although, there were still trust issues, now he felt perfectly safe to do so.

Ron who had felt very touched at his gesture patted his back in reply. "Thanks mate." Ron had only just entered Harry's office when Ginny followed him.

Tom made way for her quickly and held the closing door open for her.

She smiled warmly. "Thank you. How are you feeling, by the way?" She asked him actually surprising him. He knew she would know being Harry's better half but what surprised him was the concern in her voice for him. When he didn't reply she continued. "Harry told me he had been rather hard on you before he realized it was Dudley you were hiding. He's not usually that angry, he just didn't know what was going on-_"

"You don't have to explain anything, Professor." Tom cut across her. He had already been feeling quite ashamed that Harry Potter had apologized to him. Ginny Potter's explanation would make him feel worse. "Harry and I, we understand what happened and why it did. If anything, I am sorry, I shouldn't have over reacted to Harry's anger. I made things worse. Harry was very well justified."

"Call me Ginny." She smiled bringing a wide smile to his face. She had been quite impressed at his words. He had quite easily taken all blame on himself, not throwing anything on Harry. She was also surprised to see him smile. She had never seen such a beautiful one. It made her do something that she usually did with James when he flashed his extra large smile as a disguise to duck punishment. She patted his hair. Somehow, she was feeling for him the way she had felt for her own sons, maybe, because he was only a year older than Ted. "Don't worry about it, put it behind and move on to a better start." She smiled again, wished him a good night and entered Harry's office as Tom let the door shut behind her.

Tom stood there touched by Ginny more deeply than she would ever know. He had never been touched like this before. No one had ever patted his hair like this. Who would? He had never known what it felt like to have a mother.

"Why are you smiling?" Hermione asked the moment she entered and saw Harry smiling. "Did it work?" She asked thinking that their effort had paid off.

"No, it didn't." Harry replied.

"I told you he's too good." Dumbledore put in from his portrait.

"So, what did he say?" Ron asked entering not knowing that it hadn't worked.

"It didn't work, Ron." Harry replied him.

"So, why were you so happy?" Hermione asked slumping down in the chair Tom had left minutes ago.

"He surprised me. The way he looks at things, it made me wonder if there is anything to doubt about him." Harry replied. "But if he wasn't hiding anything, he wouldn't have dodged me so well."

"How did he do it?" Ron asked sitting down himself in a chair he had just conjured out.

"He took a gulp, then he choked it out at a joke that was, by my mistake, quite untimely." Harry replied. "He finished the rest of it by the bar with his back to me, where Dumbledore saw him pour it into the nearby vase, then he put the glass back and came right back, so I never got to offer him another drink."

"Did he take it? Veritaserum?" Ginny asked closing the door behind her.

Harry shook his head. "See my vase."

Ginny walked to it and saw wet leaves. "He's good." She smiled.

"I don't understand what's there to be happy about." Hermione asked looking at Harry and Ginny. They had both been smiling knowing that Tom Riddle had just dodged Veritaserum. They ought to be worried.

"There's definitely something that he doesn't want us to know, but other than that secret, he's completely honest. He has this aura around him that makes everything so light. Did you see his smile?" Harry asked.

"Yes." Both Ron and Ginny replied in chorus.

"He's a good kid." Ron replied.

"He really is, Hermione." Ginny looked at Hermione full in the face. "Do you know what he said when I tried explaining Harry's absolute bias towards him? He told me Harry was justified in his actions and that whatever happened was his fault. He took all of it on his own self. Such accountability doesn't come without character. I mean, take James for example, whatever he breaks happens to be Albus' fault or whenever an idea turns bad it was suddenly Ted's. Tom, he takes responsibility for himself."

Hermione stood up at this. "Ginny, are you even listening to yourself? You are comparing him to your own children, he's not Ted, he's not James, he's not your son."

"He's not but all I am saying is that he's not much different either."
