CHAPTER 18
THE RETURN OF LORD VOLDEMORT
Harry and Ginny returned to Hogwarts while Ron and Hermione went to the Ministry. A lot of questions were to be answered and the Minister for Magic didn't just drop dead of his own accord. Somebody had some explaining to do. Ron and Hermione had become the centre of attention in Harry's absence and Harry had let them do this. He was in no mood to be anywhere where more than half the Army was present, not at least after they had shown little to no trust in him.
Harry had known Tom would return to Hogwarts as well but he had no intentions of seeing him right now. He didn't think he could meet his eyes. Tom had trusted Harry to back him up and Harry had but perhaps he was not good enough. The Army had not been able to trust him not matter how much Harry had convinced them for it.
"Harry, are you alright?" Ginny asked when she saw the frown on his face.
"I don't know. This isn't going at all the way I wanted it to go."
"What do you mean?"
"The army Ginny, I need it and most of all I want it. I didn't want it to break like that, I didn't want Kingsley to die, I just wanted to capture Riddle so we could put an end to it before any of it began."
"I know Harry, I know. But we couldn't have helped it happening, you know it."
Harry nodded, but he was worried, more worried than he had ever been. The Hallow in the wrong hands meant nothing but destruction.
"Harry, what do you think really happened?" Ginny said as she sat down beside him.
"What do you mean?" Harry turned to her a little surprised.
"Well, Tom didn't do it, then how did Riddle know? How did we get trapped?"
Ginny asked as Harry turned pink. The Army had blamed everything on Tom and no one had noticed Harry's flaw in this situation. Those who had trusted Tom had only the mind to help him gather himself, they had not yet considered the fact that they had been caught in a situation out of which Tom had pulled most of them out. Harry actually felt ashamed now. If only he had listened to Tom. He had been right all along and in the end he was the one getting the worst of it all.
He stood up and turned away from Ginny. "It was my fault." He sighed. "I think, Riddle was able to break Greyback's memory charm, he acted exactly like Tom had said he would. He didn't trust Greyback not to kill someone when he had explicitly been told so... Tom had feared this since the second I had thought of it. He warned me, only I turned a deaf ear to his pleas... Now, look, we've lost everything..."
"Harry..." Ginny patted his shoulder. "Don't blame yourself... You couldn't have known..."
Harry shook his head. "I couldn't have known about Riddle's plan, but I could have trusted Tom not underestimated his fears, that has cost me the most. It cost us Bolt's life..."
Ginny didn't know what to say anymore. But she knew what Harry should do. "You're right."
Harry turned to her and looked into her eyes. Did she blame him too?
Ginny continued taking his face in her hands. "But you can't bring him back... You can make your wrongs right though, you owe Tom an apology... He was right, and you can tell him that, that will ease his pain and trust me when he'll be at peace, so will you..."
Harry merely stared at her. Somehow what she had said was true... If Tom knew Harry had made the mistake that had killed Bolt, at least, he would stop blaming himself for everything. He nodded to her then left to see Tom.
**********************************************************
Tom had turned in to the shower the moment Porch and Duds had left. He realized how good an option that was the moment he stepped into it. He felt calm in the water. He pulled off his bandages and saw the stitches that the healers had given him. He was glad these were intact or Harry would have killed him. The wad of bandages taped to his chest came off easily but now he could finally see Greyback's nasty claws engraved on his body. As he examined himself he felt a bit taken back. He looked like he had walked out of a battle. He bore a scar beneath his heart, stitches right opposite it where the Snake's teeth had penetrated him leaving ugly scars behind and Greyback's claws in the centre of his chest.
It had only been a year since Harry Potter had entered his life and here he stood more broken than he had ever been. These scars were nothing compared to the scars on his soul that his brother had left and as this thought occurred to him he looked at his face. Somehow, the handsome reflection had never pleased him, it had always reminded him of the man who shared this reflection. He had come to hate it. He turned away from the mirror and entered his room dressing himself quickly.
He swished his wand and a thick roll of bandages rolled itself around his waist. He let the wound on his chest stay open. It wasn't bleeding anymore. He put on his shirt and sat down on his bed. Since last night this was the moment when he was feeling calm. As he lay down however, all pain came back to him, pain he could not escape and yet he had to live with it. He shut his eyes tightly. Perhaps, a little sleep would cure him of this excruciating pain.
"Tom."
Harry entered his room to find Tom asleep. He called him once then turned around to leave thinking Tom had fallen asleep.
"Harry." Tom called out to him when he saw him leaving. He propped himself against his pillows. Now he truly felt weak and tired but he sat up when he saw Harry.
"I thought you were sleeping." Harry said walking in closing the door behind him.
Tom shook his head. "I am awake."
Harry stood watching him and suddenly he felt responsible for everything.
"If I were you, Harry, I would stop cursing myself." Tom said catching Harry by surprise. He had read Harry's mind before Harry had said anything.
"Have you?" Harry said taking the little light left in his eyes.
"No." He replied seriously. "But I deserve it and you don't."
Harry couldn't believe him. He strode to him and stood towering above him. "It was my plan that backfired! I made the wrong call!"
"And I failed you..."
"No, Tom ,you didn't!" Harry wanted to shake him out of the guilt that wasn't his to bear. Before he knew what he was doing, he had pulled him off the bed and actually shook him so hard a painful gasp left his mouth as Harry's knuckles made contact with the wound on his chest and Harry let go immediately.
Tom nearly fell back but Harry grabbed his arm. "I am sorry."
Tom shook his head. "It's alright... We both blame ourselves but honestly Harry, may be we both failed the Army..."
Harry simply stared at him and nodded. He was right. Neither of them had led the Army to defend itself, both had been preparing the army for an offence.
"How are you doing?" Harry asked desperately wanting to change the subject. He knew neither of them would ever stop feeling guilty for Bolt's life and that neither would ever stop blaming themselves, why then should they try.
"Same as before." Tom answered not meeting Harry's eyes and walking past him to the other side of the room.
Harry looked at him curiously. "I am glad you didn't say you were fine because no one in your position could be."
Tom made a failed attempt at a smile. "According to Duds, all of this it's usual." He pointed at his torso.
Harry suddenly remembered, he had never asked him about last night. "Ron told me, you saved him when he froze in front of the snake."
Tom finally smiled. "I meant to save both of us... Only the snake wasn't quite happy with that, I guess what they say is right then, a wounded animal is more dangerous than anything."
Harry nodded. "Yes... sometimes... Ron also told me Riddle didn't even lift his wand, Malfoy took that courtesy..."
Tom smirked. "He enjoys the mere feeling of mocking me, hurting me creates celebration for him, perhaps, he was content with the mocking part alone. Besides, he had the stone on his mind... I am surprised, somehow, he has always taken everything that has belonged to me...the stone was the least of them... but it was mine..."
Harry suddenly remembered. "Yours?" He asked him sharply. "How was it yours?"
Tom was a bit taken a back at Harry's tone. He answered nevertheless. "I found it in the forbidden forest a few days back... that technically makes it mine."
Harry sighed with relief. Tom had no clue that the resurrection stone actually belonged to him. He shut his mind to him. He suddenly remembered that his wand, the Eldar Wand had stopped working for him again. He had to know who it belonged to... At first he had thought it belonged to Riddle as Riddle had disarmed him to get the stone but he didn't know who it belonged to now.
Harry nodded at his words then asked cautiously. "So, what exactly happened after Hermione took me?"
"I disarmed Riddle to get back my stone but Malfoy cursed me... then before they could capitalize on me, Ron disarmed Malfoy... After that, Riddle didn't let Malfoy fight... He simple disapparated, leaving Ron and I to deal with the snake."
Harry understood, the wand belonged to Tom... The Hallow did not change hands on use of the Unforgivable curses as these were not a fair duel, rather a treachery to even a duel, a form of cheating, the wand's magic could change hands only on fair grounds. Harry knew Tom would hate him for this but he didn't exactly have many options, he had to do it.
"Tom..."
Tom looked at Harry full in the face and within a fraction of a second Harry had stunned him. His stunner had been silent but it had caught Tom in the chest. As he fell, he crashed into the dresser by the door and blood poured out of him.
Harry pulled out his Eldar Wand, restored his stitches and bandages, then revived him.
Tom came to with a start and the moment Harry came into his focus he retreated from him but found his way blocked by the door.
"Relax..." Harry said to calm him down as Tom looked white.
"Why..." He asked shocked. Harry had stunned him so suddenly he had never even seen it coming.
Harry looked at him a moment. He deserved to know the truth. "I had to." Harry stopped to let him take this down. He stood up then stretched out his hand to Tom to take it who simply sat where he was. He didn't even know if he should trust Harry at all.
Harry understood. Tom had his doubts but even Harry would have those if someone kept stunning him out of nowhere. At the moment though Harry was glad Tom was so weak that Harry had penetrated his protection and stunned him.
Harry sat down his bed as Tom sat with his back to his door staring at Harry strangely.
"I had to beat you get the ownership of my wand back."
Tom looked at him even more strangely. "I never beat you... I never even dueled with you..."
"You didn't, but Riddle did and he disarmed me, but like you just told me, you disarmed him. That transferred the ownership of my wand to you and I needed it back. You see, Tom, this is no ordinary wand, it's the Eldar Wand."
Tom stared at Harry. "And what's that?" He asked a bit curious now.
Harry smiled. Tom had literally no clue of what he had come to posses twice now.
"It is the wand to destiny, the deathstick, one of the three Deathly Hallows. The three most coveted objects in Wizarding legend... Two of which I posses and the you had the third one... the stone, that is now with your brother."
Tom sat upright. "What?! The stone I found in the forest is a legend?"
"Yes... The Eldar Wand, the Invisibility Cloak and the Resurrection Stone are together the Deathly Hallows. You should know now the secret that I have trusted only a few with. I owned the Hallows until the night of the battle at Hogwarts when I lost the stone in the forest, I never went back to look for it, I thought it would be safer is it stayed lost but I was wrong, it found it's way back to its true master, to you..."
Tom stood up. "How am I...?"
"The Hallows were owned by the Peverall brothers, the one who owned the cloak was my ancestor, while the one who owned the stone was yours, rightfully the two of these Hallows belong to us, but the Wand is not one man's property, it changes hands as they beat each other. Now, the stone resides with Riddle while the remaining two Hallows are with me."
Tom suddenly realized his mistake. "Oh My God... Riddle has the stone...and that's because of me..."
Harry stood up. "No, that's because fate is at play here. The stone is still with its true master. I only wish Riddle doesn't figure out how to use it."
