CHAPTER 11
The Faithful Servant
Harry, Ron, Hermione and Ginny had just descended the spiral staircase of Harry's office when they met Lavender by the stone gargoyle.
"Thank goodness I found you!" She exclaimed the moment she saw them climbing down. "Seth and Malcolm had wanted to see you."
Harry pulled out his pocket watch. "I'll meet them at the funeral. We're all late already."
"They're not going. They are still feeling the effects of the curse."
Harry nodded."Well, then I'll see them when I return."
Lavender nodded and walked away as Dudley and Tom descended Harry's office. Harry suddenly realized something. Dudley had obviously come to take Tom for the funeral but Tom couldn't go, not until at least the effects of Veritesarem wore off. He would be spilling his secrets if he went like this.
"I'll take you with side along apparition." Harry said pulling Duds to his side.
"Don't worry about it. Tom will take me. I was going to leave with Porch earlier but I wanted to take him from the Wing first." Duds replied nodding at Tom.
"He would take you if he was going." Harry replied smiling seeing both Dudley's and Tom's shocked expressions. He looked at Tom but spoke to Dudley. "He has something important to do, on my specific orders."
Tom understood but did not dare open his mouth to side with Harry. He would end up spilling the truth if he did.
Duds looked at Tom who gave no indication whatsoever of approval of Harry's words. He then turned to Harry who nodded to him appreciatively, to accompany him. "Alright." He replied and made his way out of the castle with Harry, Ron, Hermione and Ginny.
Tom, who was left behind quite against his own will, knew Harry was right. He knew he couldn't talk to anyone for at least another hour. If he did, he wouldn't be able to lie. Not that he enjoyed lying but Harry had been right, some things had best remain a secret. He made his way to his room, entered and slumped down on his bed. Perhaps, a little sleep might do him some good.
The moment Tom lay down on his bed he realized how tired he had been. He had only just got back on his feet when Harry had called him for a meeting. Perhaps, Madam Brown had been right, he shouldn't have been up and about that early. He closed his eyes and fell asleep almost instantly.
****************************************************
Harry (and Dudley with side along apparition), Ron, Hermione and Ginny appeared at the funeral. The second row from the front had been reserved for them. The first one was occupied by her family. They filed in quietly only to realize that they were accompanied in that row by the Minister for Magic, Kingsley Shacklebolt.
Bolt showed no sign of recognition for any of the four of them. When the funeral came to an end and Harry had met and spoken words of condolence with all of Andrea's family, he approached Bolt before he could leave again.
"I have to speak to you."
Bolt did not reply. He didn't even look at Harry.
Harry didn't have time for this. He stepped in front of Bolt so he didn't have another option but to look at him. "Andrea's death was not a random crime." He stopped. What was he going to tell him? He had not spoken to Tom yet about whether he could reveal the true turn of events to the Army and yet here he stood. He couldn't say anything without Tom's consent. "She was killed by the same man who killed Neville and Hannah."
Bolt's attention was on him but he made no effort to hide his angry eyes. "And you know that how?"
"I just do. I can't explain everything here. I need to see you in private. Set up a_-_"
Before Harry had finished, however, Bolt had walked away from him.
Harry stood there transfixed. He could have gulped down his own insult easily for the sake of the situation but Bolt hadn't even given him a chance to explain. He had truly taken away the Ministry's support from Harry. But Harry needed the Ministry's resources to look for that faithful servant of the Dark Lord who had made a new one out of one of his sons.
"What did he say?' Hermione asked coming over to Harry the moment Bolt left.
"Nothing. But the Ministry won't help us."
"Then, it's time the Army did." Ron said who had just arrived and heard Harry's last words.
"Ron, the Army won't do anything until they know the whole thing. It's been built on trust. We'll have to tell them everything. And none of us know how they'll react if they find out Voldemort has sons, one of whom has nearly become Voldemort himself and the other one is Deputy Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. They'll want to get anyone they can for Neville's and Hannah's demise. Tom will get the worst of this if the Army discovers who he really is."
"Well, then we find him ourselves." Ginny put in who had arrived when Harry had been denying the Army's help.
"And how do you suppose we could do that?" Hermione asked.
"Are you all forgetting something? The four of us are not alone in this. Tom's with us. He can rival Riddle. He'll help us find him."
************************************************************
Tom woke up an hour later. He sat up taking his face in his hands. He felt so tired. He realized he hadn't eaten anything since yesterday noon. He stood up and felt weak but he knew a little something to eat and few sweet words with Twix would cure him just fine. He was about to leave his room when he remembered something. Harry had told him to stay back because he wanted the effects of the Truth Potion worn off. He turned to the Fat Lady's portrait where Dumbledore sat playing cards. "Ask me a question."
"How do I look?" Dumbledore asked observing him through his half moon spectacles.
"Young and dashing!" Tom replied as a feeling of relief swept over him. He smiled widely and walked out of his room.
He was on his way to the Kitchens when he found Seth and Malcolm out of the Wing for the same purpose going in the same direction. They were both entering the same corridor from opposite sides when Tom had seen them and to his surprise Seth had noticed him at the same time. He tapped Malcolm on the shoulder and nodded towards Tom.
Tom pulled out his wand to disillusion himself. Weak as he was, he had no intentions of getting all bruised up to satisfy their appetites but he was shocked at what they did at the sight of a wand in his hand.
"No, please, don't hurt us!" Malcolm, who seldom spoke had wrapped his hands around his torso as if that would protect him.
"We won't bother you again!" Seth pleaded nodding, at the same time, hiding behind Malcolm.
It took Tom a few seconds to understand what they were saying. He pocketed his wand and took one daring step towards them. He froze to see them retreat several steps. He understood. They had obviously tried to corner Riddle last night and he had been merciless to them. "I will not hurt you." He spoke from when he stood. "Again." He added realizing that for them he had already given them the worst. "I am sorry. I was angry at something else. I had no intentions of killing you." He clarified just in case they felt he had tried to kill them again and sworn revenge on him again.
"You good as did!" Seth said rather bravely. "But we will not cross your path again."
Before Tom could say anything, both of them ran away as if Tom would pull out his wand and start cursing them with just about everything. Tom stood staring after them. Once again, Riddle had altered the course of his life. He didn't know how much longer he would be able to stand it.
