Silhouette Affection
===================================
Sanyukta caressed her cheek when she remembered that day last March. Remembered another kiss. For months now, she hadn't let herself think about it. But she thought about it now.
It all had started when she wore that silly, you can kiss me anyway T-shirt she had worn to Shekhawat's house for their Holi party, right after she and Parth had started going out. She'd had received a few friendly pecks from the various people around-- except for Randhir . She'd ended up with him in the kitchen, his mother's kitchen, no less alone.
And then it had happened. The kiss unplanned, unexpected and anything but innocent. Sanyukta had felt so guilty, she'd practically sprinted back into the living room to join Parth, then feigned a headache so he would take her home. The following weekend she accompanied Parth to Goa and returned engaged, for reasons unknown to everyone. And later she'd learned that Randhir had called it quits, for reasons that she doesn't know.
One thing she did know overtly sexy men meant only one thing-- trouble. Randhir definitely fell into that category, and last thing she wants is more trouble.
----
Fortunately for Randhir Parth's car was still parked at his house. Unfortunately for Parth Randhir was in no mood for socialising. He wasn't exactly sure what he would say to his brother , but he could guarantee it wouldn't be pleasant.
He rapped on the door three times before Parth finally answered, looking dishelved and shirtless, as if he'd just crawled out of bed. Parth ran a fast hand through his hair.
"Hey big brother, what are you.."
Randhir shoved him aside, walked into the living room and pulled out the letter.
"what in the hell were you thinking?"
Parth eyed the paper and collapsed on the couch
"Sanyukta sent you"
Randhir strode to the sofa and loomed over him.
"Sanyukta didn't want me to come. But I'm here now, and you have to do some explaining, better get to it."
Parth leaned back and stacked his hands behind his head.
"I don't have a lot of time, I've a flight to catch. Besides this isn't any of your damn business"
"I'm making it my business, Parth. You could have been man enough at least to end it in person."
"I don't like messy goodbye scenes" Parth said "It's a lot easier to make a clean break without having to face someone"
That only angered Randhir more
"You're a coward, Parth. You don't deserve Sanyukta . You never have"
Parth smiled "I guess you're going to tell me that you deserve her."
"I don't know what the hell you're talking about"
"sure you do, Randhir. You've always wanted her , and for months now, you've been royally pissed off because I got there before you did. But now she's all yours, if you don't mind having my leftovers."
Randhir hung on to what his composure, tempered his tone when he said, "I'm not even going to justify that with a response."
"And I'm not going to ignore what Sanyukta said on her show today. My boss's wife was watching and she told him about it. If my position's in jeopardy because of Sanyukta. I'm going to sue her and studio for slander."
Right when Randhir started to say that you couldn't defame a man with very little character something caught his eye, a girly cardigan. He crossed the room and held it up.
"unless you're trying to get in touch feminine side of yours, I'd say the owner of this is probably behind your bedroom door"
Parth came at him quickly and grabbed it "Get out, Randhir."
Randhir fisted his hands at his sides, resisting the urge to plant a hook in his brother's jaw. but subsided it by considering far more effective that could hurt him better
"I'll have a talk with your boss myself and let him know that you're far more interested in screwing than your job"
Randhir didn't wait for Parth's response and left. Sanyukta was no longer with Parth, and that it mean she was free to do as she pleased, and he would have no problem helping her get over his brother...
==========
For three hours Sanyukta wandered aimlessly around her apartment, picking up the clutter she'd ignored for several weeks. She'd never been domestic, although her kitchen was spotless clean. But her bed room was another story altogether. Her clothes tended to stay where they'd landed until she'd gathered them up to do laundry. She needed some order as she couldn't stand this anymore.
When the doorbell buzzed, Sanyukta worried it might be Parth coming by to make amends at Randhir's insistence. If it did happen to be him , she would gladly take the opportunity to toss him out, as she should have done months ago. Yet when she peered through the peephole she didn't see Parth. she saw his brother standing on her porch and that was quite a surprise. Randhir had never paid her a visit before.
Sanyukta opened the door immediately regretting her unkempt state.
"What are you doing here?"
He held up a brown paper bag. "I brought some wine. I thought you could use a drink"
She could, several in fact
"By all means come in"
Randhir followed her into the living room and shed his jacket
"Nice place"
"I like the quiet neighbourhood" She liked the way he looked now with his navy blue shirt clung onto his chiselled chest showing off his amazing bodyline, well worn jeans. Not that she'd seen him ever look anything but great.
"You know I'm so used to you in a suit, it's almost a shock to see you in casuals"
"I guess we're even then"
"I'm a mess" Sanyukta said as she strolled her fingers through her hair she hadn't bothered to dry
"You look great"
"Thanks now come have a seat. I was about to make something for dinner. have you eaten yet?"
"No"
Randhir set on sofa and kept the bottle on table
"But you shouldn't have to cook we could order"
"It's nothing fancy, I can manage" Sanyukta made her way to the kitchen
She prepared a hefty meal, cooking was something that managed to keep her cal even if she had her inner turmoil getting uncontrollable, after gathering all the fixings and silverware, placed them on teakwood tray.
"here you go"
She sat keeping comfortable distance between them, yet still oddly feeling nervous. Ridiculous. He was her boss, her friend. But this was Randhir in her home, not in the office.
Randhir uncorked the wine with all the proficiency of a man who'd had a lot of practice. He poured it for both of them. Randhir settled his gaze on her lips, then said
"Lean over here"
Sanyukta felt an abrupt surge of excitement, "Why?"
"Because you have something on your mouth"
"Point t out I'll get it"
"I'll do it"
He formed his palm to her jaw and rubbed the corner of her lip with his thumb several times,
"It's gone now"
Finally he let go of her face and took a long drink of the wine in hand and tried to think of something to say to break the silence.
"Did you find Parth? What did he say?"
"He told me to mind my own business and I told him he was a coward."
That gave Sanyukta a strong sense of satisfaction, "You didn't punch him, did you?"
"No but I wanted to"
"I'm so sorry Randhir"
"Don't worry about it"
Sanyukta kicked off her flip flops and folded her legs beneath her as Randhir broke her the news of Parth being with another girl.
"I'm not shocked, Randhir"
"I don't understand if you knew it wasn't going to work then why did you agree to marry him?"
She really didn't plan to tell Randhir about the reasons behind her engagement. Frankly she was embarrassed over the whole thing. But since he' d played her knight, he deserved an explanation
"It's a long story"
"I've got all night, let's hear it"
"The trip to Goa back in march included a conference with several executives, including Parth's boss. Considering the fact that his boss was pretty conservative and orthodox, he convinced me it would be better if we said we were engaged. "
"Wait a minute! engagement was farce?" Randhir held up his hands in disbelief
"you could say that"
"Then why didn't you set things straight when you were home"
"This was where it all got complicated, he wanted to keep the pretence until he got promotion, and that took much longer"
Randhir leaned forward and ranked a hand down his face.
"you're smart, Sanyukta you went ahead with all this for nine months"
He fell silent and when Sanyukta couldn't take it anymore, she said "I know you think I'm insane. And believe me, I've questioned my sanity over the past few months"
"that whole scene was that an act?"
"No it wasn't. I was really hurt by him. No I was really hurt by what he did"
"Then you did care for him"
"I wouldn't have done what I did for someone I hated. Although I had to admit there were times he did things to me..." She drew in a deep breath and blew out a sigh
"Never mind it's not an issue"
A flash of anger crossed Randhir's face
"Tell me what he did to you"
"When we agreed originally to the idea, Parth dated several other women and finally decided I wasn't good enough for him."
"He's never been steady" Randhir said
Sanyukta definitely learned it hard way, "you know I've been a confidant person in my own skin but Parth made me doubt that"
"You're beautiful, even if my brother was blind to see it"
"Oh my gosh your mother" She covered her mouth as she remembered her being a regular viewer of her show. "She must think I'm horrible"
Randhir draped an arm over the back of the sofa and lightly touched her shoulder to gain her attention and lightly touched her
"You don' t worry they are out of town"
Sanyukta felt relieved, although facing them still seemed inevitable, mental exhaustion began to set in bringing her a yawn
Randhir stood up "Then I'll let you go to bed"
when they made it to the entry, Sanyukta gave him a hug before pulling back
"Thanks so much for listening"
Surprisingly Randhir kept his arms around her, placing his palm on her back he nudged her closer, He moved her hair back from her shoulder, but instead of pressing his lips against her lips, he brushed a warm, lingering kiss on her neck, right below her ear.
"Remember If you need anything, Sanyukta all you have to do is ask."
