Chapter-5
"Tum yahaan kya kar rahe ho?" she said taking a step back.
"Aapne suna nahi shayad theek se. Wo adjoining cottage hum logon ne book kiya hai. To uski chaabi lene aaye hain. Dr.Kher ne kaha ki aap ke paas hai Ms.Shekhawat? Waise mera bhi same hi surname hai. Such a coincidence na!" said Randhir in an acid tone.
To control the situation, Parth intervened in between.
"Chaabi..?" said Parth and extended his hand. Sanyukta took the keys from the drawer and handed it to Parth.
"Waise khaane ka kya scene hai yahaan?" asked Parth jingling the keys.
"Jee main banati hun. Aap log muh haath dho lijiye. Main aapke cottage mein le aati hun." said Rani as she felt Sanyukta and Randhir's stare session in a full swing.
Randhir was still looking at Sanyukta, when Parth literally grabbed his jacket and dragged him out. Sanyukta turned around steeling herself.
"Stop looking at him like a puppy Sanyukta. Warna use shaq ho jaega." thought Sanyukta.
"I won't make it easy for you baby" thought Randhir. As they neared the door he deliberately hit his wounded hand on the knob. As he winced in pain, Sanyukta came running forward and held his hand.
"Ye kya hua? Kahaan laga? Laparwaahi ki bhi had hoti hai Ran..." She trailed as she found him smirking. He snatched his hand and moved out.
Sanyukta closed the door and leaned against the door trying to control her tears.
"Bibiji, ye wahin hain na, jinki tasveer dekh ke aap roz roti hain?" said Rani keeping her hand on Sanyukta's shoulder.
Sanyukta wiped her tears and turned around.
"Chal. Khana bhi banana hai un logon ke liye." Said Sanyukta tying her hair in a bun.
"Bibiji, kya banau? Baingan banau kya?" said Rani taking out brinjals from the fridge.
"Sochna bhi mat. Nafrat hai use Baingan se." said Sanyukta keeping the brinjals back in the fridge as Rani smiled. She took out bittergourd instead.
"Karela pasand hai unhe?" said Rani in a shock.
"Hmmm..Ajeeb cheezein hi pasand hai use." Said Sanyukta lost in thoughts.
FITE
Randhir's room
"You did it Sanyukta. Good job!" said Sanyukta to herself as she finally made it into Randhir's room after hanging on the window sill for almost half an hour.
As she turned around, she found Randhir sleeping peacefully. She slowly tip toed to his bed and kept her bag on his study table. She sat on his bed and touched his forehead with her left hand.
As she touched him, Randhir opened his eyes slowly. He smiled initially as he thought he was dreaming.
"Abhi tabiyat kaisi hai tumhari?" she said caressing his hair gently.
With this he sat upright and touched her cheek to confirm her presence.
"Main sach mein hun. Tum koi sapna nahi dekh rahe." She said pinching his cheek.
"Tum yahaan kya kar rahi ho? Andar kaise aayi?" asked Randhir still in shock.
"Khidki se." said Sanyukta as she emptied the contents of her bag on his bed.
A thermometer, a tiffin box, Vicks vaporub, a packet of biscuits, a thermos and a box full of pills.
"Ye sab kya hai?" said Randhir eyeing Sanyukta.
"Chup chaap baithe raho. Tum bahut bure ho. Mujhe Jiggy ne bataya ki tumhe bukhaar hai kal raat se. Tum khud nahi bata sakte the." said Sanyukta taking the thermometer out from its cover.
"Tum pareshaan ho jaati isiliye nahi bataya." said Randhir holding her hand.
"Parson poori raat tum mere project ke liye jag kar kaam kar rahe the aur main as usual so gayi thi. Meri itni fikr hai to bas apna khayal rakho. Chalo muh kholo." ordered Sanyukta.
He smiled at her antics and obediently opened his mouth. She stuffed the thermometer in his mouth and waited patiently for 2 mins.
"Tumhe 102 temperature hai Randhir!" screamed Sanyukta looking at the thermometer after 2 mins.
"Aaram se Ms. Agarwal. I know mere dono roommates nahi hain room mein but hostel mein log hain." said Randhir shutting her mouth with her palm.
"Chup karo and jaldi se ye tiffin finish karo. I know ki tumne subah se kuch nahi khaaya." said Sanyukta forwarding the tiffin box to him.
As he opened the tiffin, he smiled at her.
"Kuch ulta seedha mat kehna is khaane ko dekh ke. Pata hai kitni mushkil se banaya hai. Apne hostel ke cook ko rishwat de ke aadhe ghante ke liye kitchen mein reh ke maine tumhare liye Khichdi banayi. I know ki tumhe khichdi pasand nahi isiliye sabzi bhi banayi taaki tum ise nigal sako. Par problem ye hui ki sirf karela hi bacha tha kitchen mein so.." Sanyukta said apologetically.
Randhir bend forward and kissed her forehead.
"Karela mera favourite hai." said Randhir as he took a spoon and stuffed in his mouth.
"No wonders." said Sanyukta sarcastically.
As soon as he finished, Sanyukta took out 2 pills and handed it to him.
"Ye badi waali fever ke liye and ye red waali cold ke liye"
"Kuch galat dawaai to nahi hai na Farzi. Warna main seedha upar." said Randhir teasing her.
As Sanyukta was about to fight, he popped both the pills in his mouth.
"Chalo ab apni t-shirt nikaalo and bed pe let jao" said Sanyukta.
"Sanyukta, tum meri bimaari ka aise faayda nahi utha sakti. Mujhe meri izzat baut pyaari hai." said Randhir in an over dramatic way.
"Randhir, naatak baad mein karna. Vicks lagaane ke liye bol rahi hun. Chest and back pe lagaane se congestion nahi hoga." Said Sanyukta playfully hitting him on his arm.
As Randhir took out his t-shirt, Sanyukta couldn't help but stare at his sculpted chest and his muscled arms shamelessly in the pale light of the table lamp.
Randhir saw her eyes roving above his body.
"Agar aise hi dekhti rahi na Farzi to aaj raat yahin rukna pad jaega tumhe aur jo sardi zukaam tumhe mujhse milega wo alag." said Randhir as he winked at her. He then turned around and slept on his stomach.
Sanyukta was dying to touch him. She took some vicks on her fingers and slowly started rubbing on his back along his back bone.
"Ummm" Randhir moaned on her touch. She was giving him a hard time as his self control was going down with her every touch.
"Chalo ab turn karo." Sanyukta said taking some more vicks on her fingers.
Randhir turned around in the bed now facing her. She slowly started massaging the vicks on his chest. She could see Randhir's eyes change colours with her every motion. Before she knew both of them were lost in each others eyes and her hand started exploring his abs. In a swift movement, he toppled Sanyukta. Now he was on top of her, carefully balancing so that all his weight didn't fall on her.
"Randhir, ye kya kar rahe ho?" said Sanyukta still lost in his eyes.
"Ab ye bhi batana padega." said Randhir coming closer.
Sanyukta closed her eyes but was surprised when Randhir got up hastily and stood up.
"Shit! Mujhe sardi hai Sanyu. Tumhe bhi ho jaegi. Main bhi na!" he said frustrated and turned around. He had covered his face with his palms and was controlling his ragged breaths.
Sanyukta got up and hugged him lovingly from behind.
"Tumne pehli baar mujhe Sanyu' bulaya." She said kissing his back.
"I love you Sanyu." He said turning back and hugging her fully.
"Bibiji. Gas band kar dijiye nahi to jal jaega" Rani's voice brought Sanyukta back.
She closed the gas and packed all the food in the dishes and told Rani.
"Jaa ye khana le ja."
"Aap nahi aayengi." asked Rani with a ficker of hope. She knew whoever he was, he was the most important man in her Bibiji's' life. Maybe he could bring the hope to live in her life back.
"Nahi. Tu ja. Kal subah jaldi aana. Un logon ka naashta bhi banana hai." said Sanyukta retiring back to her room.
Rani entered the cottage and kept the food on the table.
"Aur kuch sahab?" asked Rani to Parth who sat on the table to eat.
"Nahi. Thanks." said Parth and turned to Randhir who was sitting on the window sill smoking again.
"Aa ja Randhir. Khana kha le" said Parth.
"Tu kha le. Mujhe bhook nahi hai." answered Randhir as he threw the cigarette but was still looking out.
As Rani was moving out of the door, she stopped and looked in Randhir's direction "Sahab, aap ka hi naam Randhir hai na?"
"Tumhe kaise pata?" said Randhir turning a bit in her direction.
"Bas pata chal gaya sahab. Waise Bibiji ne aapke liye Karela banaya hai. Unhone kaha ki aapko bahut pasand hai." said Rani guiltily and walked out.
Randhir again turned around and found Sanyukta looking out of the window lost in some other world. The moonlight was accentuating her features more. Dressed in a white Patiala and blue kurti, she was looking breathtaking. Suddenly Sanyukta turned in his direction as if sensing his penetrating gaze. Both of them looked at each other with a longing.
"That's it. " Randhir spoke to himself and went out of the cottage in her direction.
"Oh no! Randhir to idhar hi aa raha hai. Agar wo aa gaya to...No..I have to stop him." she said to herself as she saw him moving in her direction.
She made a dash for the door and closed it tightly. She was breathing hard against the door when his voice came from behind.
"Main darwaaze se aaj tak kabhi aaya hun jo aaj aata."
She was scared to even turn around. With a lot of efforts she turned around and faced him.
He was looking like some Greek God descended from the heaven but just to make her life hell. His features had sharpened over the years. His body seemed more polished now. She could make this out form his chest which was clearly visible through his white shirt whose first 3 butoons were open. He was looking at her with so much love and passion that she suddenly forgot how to breathe.
She steeled herself and told in a cold tone.
"Leave Randhir! Ye college nahi hai jo mere kamre mein jab mann chahe chale aaoge. Just get out!"
"Aur agar nahi jaaoon to kya karogi?" asked Randhir testing her resolve.
"Main..main..chillaungi" she said not finding any other alternative.
"Oh God Farzi! Is that the best you got?" said Randhir coming closer to her.
"Randhir, I am serious. Mere paas mat aao. Just stay there! Warna..." Sanyukta warned Randhir not trusting her traitor heart.
"Warna kya Sanyukta?" he said stopping just a step away from her.
She tried moving sideways when he blocked her by keeping both his hands on the either side of her head on the door. She closed her eyes and turned her head left because she feared that he will be able to see what she is hiding through her eyes. Her Heart.
"Aath saal Sanyu. Maine ye aath saal tumhare bina kaise bitaaye hain sirf main hi jaanta hun. Har din bhagwaan se yahin maangta tha ki aaj to tumhari koi khabar mil jaaye. Sab ne kaha ki Sanyukta is duniya mein nahi hai but I said to myself that its not possible. Agar main zinda hun to wo bhi hai. " he said nuzzling her cheek.
"Randhir..." she said his name under her breath, barely audible.
"Tumne promise kiya tha na ki tum mujhe chod ke kabhi nahi jaogi. Aur fir ek hi pal mein mujhe chod ke chali gayi. Why Sanyukta Aggarwal? Why did you do this to me? I need answers! Aur wo bhi abhi! Speak up now." He screamed at the top of his voice.
"Randhir. Main tumhare kisi sawaal ka jawaab nahi de sakti aur na hi dena chahti hun. Main sab kuch bhool chuki hun. Tum bhi bhool jao ki hum log kabhi saath the." Said Sanyukta not looking at him.
"To tum sab bhool chuki ho?" said Randhir coming dangerously close.
"Haan" said Sanyukta still not looking at him.
"To tumhari yaadasht thodi refresh kar deta hun." said Randhir in her right ear.
Without a warning, he took her face in his hands and closed the distance between their lips. It started rough with Sanyukta trying to push Randhir away with all her might. But within seconds she responded the kiss with equal passion. Her arms found her way around his neck and her hands in his hair. As she stopped resisting, Randhir's hands moved from her face to her waist pulling her more closer and backing her more against the door. Sanyukta felt as if she just got her life back. Their tongues fought for dominance as Randhir grazed his teeth on her lower lip coaxing a moan out of her. After what it felt like ages they separated due to lack of oxygen but stayed into each other's arms when Randhir whispered between ragged breaths,
"You have definitely not forgotten how to kiss me and be in my arms sweetheart. Your body deceives your words."
Hearing this Sanyukta came out in the real world and pushed Randhir with all her might and screamed at the top of her voice.
"Bas karo Randhir. Please. I beg of you. Mujhe mere haal pe akela chod do and mujhse door chale jao. Main tumhe aur takleef nahi de sakti."
Randhir came forward, held her face in his hands and said looking into her eyes "Kaunsa haal' Sanyu? Kya hua hai tumhe yahin to main jaan na chahta hun. Kya chupa rahi ho mujhse? Talk to me."
But suddenly Sanyukta clutched her head and fainted in his arms. Randhir kept screaming her name but she just blacked out. He picked her in his arms and put her on the bed. Then he called Parth and asked him to come and bring Dr.Kher along. He sat on Sanyukta's bed trying to wake her up.
Within minutes Parth came with Dr. Kher and he injected 2 injections in Sanyukta.
"She is ok now. Let her sleep the night out. She will be fine in the morning." Said Dr.Kher getting up.
"Doctor, kya hua hai ise?" asked Randhir in an agitated tone.
"Waise aapko pehle yahaan nahi dekha. Aapki tareef?" asked the doctor eyeing both Randhir and Parth.
"Ye mera friend hai Parth Kashyap and myself Randhir Singh Shekhawat. Main Sanyukta ka..." he trailed trying to find correct words to define what they were to each other.
"To tum ho Randhir. Behoshi mein uske muh se aaj tak tumhare naam ke siwa kuch nahi suna. Chalo bahaar baat karte hain." said Dr.Kher patting his shoulder.
He and Parth gave Sanyukta a final look and went out of the room closing the door of the room shut behind.
"Agar use maalum pada ki maine tumhe ye sab bataya hai to wo bahut ghussa hogi par mujhe lagta hai ki shayad tum use convince kar paoge." said Dr.Kher looking at the closed door of Sanyukta's room.
"Clinical terms mein nahi jaunga but let me sum her condition to you in simple language. Main use pichle paanch saal se treat kar raha hun jabse wo yahaan aayi hai. Usse pehle wo kahaan thi, I don't know. But uski medical reports se ye maalum pada ki she met with a horrible accident 8 years back. Her head injuries were so severe that she slipped into coma and was in the same condition for 2 years."
Randhir sat on the chair with a thud as his legs gave up on him. Parth put his hand on his shoulder supporting him and nodded at the doctor to continue.
Dr.Kher continued "After she got out of the coma, the doctor monitored all her signs. But she had developed a rare condition. She has a big clot in her brain which the doctor could not operate at the time of her accident as she immediately slipped into coma and which is still in there. Doctors even said ki wo zyada dino tak nahi bachegi. But within all these years her condition has become a bit stable with the medications and the clot has moved into some dormant category until yesterday when she became unconscious. Over exertion or stress or any mental problem or shock or surprise or any such out of the blue activities can cause that clot to burst in her brain killing her that instant."
"But there must be something that we can do. Right?" asked Parth to the doctor with some hope as Randhir was still trying to absorb all this.
"We have to remove that clot but it will be a major operation. Have you heard of Dr. Ray Smith, the famous neurosurgeon who performed the operation to separate the conjoined twins? I got in touch with him 2 years back regarding Sanyukta's condition. He studied all her reports and he is ready to the take a chance on this operation. But the problem is that the clot can burst during the operation and so he wants Sanyukta to come over to New York so that he can study her condition in a better way. But ye ladki to maan hi nahi rahi hai. She is adamanat that she won't go."
Parth looked at Randhir who was slumped on the chair and was still looking down at the ground as if finding her cure there.
Dr. Kher walked to Randhir and sat in the chair in front of him.
"Zindagi bhar ke dard se mujhe bachaane ke liye, itne saalon se wo ye sab kuch akele jhel rahi thi." said Randhir in particular to no one.
"Wo zindagi jee rahi hai kyunki uski zindagi bachi hui hai. If you really love her then make her love her life again. Ab kaise karna hai wo tum pe hai. Uski saari reports us drawer mein hai. Khayal rakhna and kuch ho to call karna." Said the Doctor and went out.
Parth went and sat in the seat opposite to Randhir and looked at him. His eyes were full of tears.
"To kya karna hai?" said Parth silently observing him.
"Kal subah baat karte hain. Bahut raat ho gayi hai." said Randhir wiping his tears.
"Theek hai main yahaan living room mein so jaata hun. Tu Sanyukta ke paas so ja. Kuch zarurat ho to awaaz de dena. Ok?" said Parth shifting the pillows on the couch.
Randhir nodded and went into Sanyukta's room. The sight made his eyes water again. She was sleeping peacefully. He got out of his shirt and slipped next to Sanyukta in her bed. Very carefully he shifted her so that her head was on his chest now. As he caged her in his arms, her arms on their own shifted and landed on his chest. He kissed her forehead and she sighed his name in her sleep.
As the morning rays touched their sleeping forms, Randhir was the first one to wake up and the first thing he saw was her beautiful face. She must have moved in her sleep cos both of them were in each other's arms now and their faces were a mere millimeter away. Randhir smiled at the heavenly sight and gave her a light peck on her lips. Very carefully, he shifted her out of his arms and got out of the bed. He saw the time, it was 7.00 am. He wore his shirt and as he opened the bedroom door, he found Parth sleeping and Rani preparing breakfast.
"Good morning Sahab ji. Wo Doctor saab ne bataya ki Bibiji ke tabiyat raat mein fir kharaab ho gayi thi. Abhi theek hai na wo?" Rani asked him concerned about Sanyukta. Randhir smiled and replied
"Hmm.. Abhi theek hai wo". Parth also woke up and a series of good morning's followed.
"Rani, tum abhi yahin ho to hum dono apne cottage se fresh ho ke aate hain." said Randhir as he took out all her medical reports from the drawer.
"Ji" said Rani and busied herself in the chores.
After around an hour both of them returned to Sanyukta's home. As he entered her room he found her sitting on the bed looking out.
On waking up, Sanyukta could smell Randhir's scent on her clothes and on the bed which made it evident that he was with her the whole night. She was wondering what all the doctor must have told him, but one look and she knew that he knows everything about her condition.
He slowly moved to her and sat on the bed facing her. Her eyes were already brimming with tears. He gently removed her hair from her face and kissed her forehead murmuring a Good morning.
With this she broke down all her walls and hugged Randhir with all her might. He hugged her back and kissed her hair.
"I am sorry Randhir for hiding away from you all these years. Tumhare bina kaise jee rahi thi sirf main hi jaanti hun. Par kya karti? I couldn't hurt you more with my condition. Apni takleef dekh sakti hun Randhir, tumhari nahi." She said between her sobs.
"I love you Sanyu. Bas ab aur ek aansu nahi. You know how much I hate your tears and how much I love your smile." Randhir said wiping her tears.
"I love you Randhir. I love you so much." said Sanyukta again hugging Randhir.
"And I love you both." said Parth standing in the doorway.
They both parted and Sanyukta got up from her bed and went to Parth. She held her ears and Parth smiled at her childish antics and hugged her.
"Dobara aise mat karna Sanyukta. Ek baar to Randhir ko sambhaal liya, doosri baar nahi kar paunga."
Randhir wiped his own eyes and said "Bahut zyada rona-dhona ho gaya. Chalo ab naashta karte hain."
As they were eating in a comfortable silence, Randhir broke the silence with the question Sanyukta was dreading.
"Sanyu, tumhara accident kaise hua tha? I saw your reports this morning. You were in Delhi's best hospital for the 2 years you were in Coma. I remember very well going their twice enquiring about you. But the receptionist said that no girl was admitted. Who got you there and was paying the bills?"
Sanyukta's fork slipped from her hand as she looked at Randhir trying to think of a way of avoiding this topic.
"Agar use sach maalum pad gaya to he will be shattered. No Sanyu, you cant break him again" she thought.
"Sanyu..?" said Randhir holding her hand but she was now looking down which made Randhir more worried.
"Kya chupa rahi ho Sanyu?" said Randhir.
