Chapter 12

The lights on the edge of the beach shimmered creating a twinkling effect. Giving a soft luminous light, it allowed feeble view of the wet sand washed by the waving water in turns. A chain of footprints trail out of the party to a very secluded place, where taani stood all alone, with broken sandals in her hand, dress creased with sand and dirt, mind fuzzed with alcohol and heart broken inside. Her feet stumbled not allowing her to walk straight. She groaned at her failure.

"Stop being such a jerk!!" She looked down pointing angrily at her bare feet with a pout. "Walk straight you stupid.." Her tongue became less versatile as she gets difficulty in her speech. Ask the after effects of drinking!

Following the trail of footprints, Rajeev reached the spot only to find her swinging in all the directions. Her arms spread in the air as she mimics to fly. He quickly ran to catch her as she lost her balance in the most clumsiest way about to break her ankle. But before he can reach her, another shadow by passed him speeding towards Taani. He glanced as Rey tried holding her. Though not helping much in her fall, he made it slower as she dumped herself on the wet sand sitting cross legged and looking at the shimmering water.

"Taani, get up. Let me get you to the room." He said a little strictly.

"NO!!! I don't want to go!!" She squealed pushing his forwarded hands away.

"Taani!!"

"Go away!!!" She shouted.

"Taani, get up!!!" His tone mimicked hers as he lost his cool finally. She pouted, her blurring vision not allowing proper view of his face. With a little bit of difficulty and stumbling, she gets back on her feet.

"I know what you want." She said biting her lip as if trying to stifle her laugh.

"What?!" He muttered confusingly.

"You want the same.." She giggled.

"What are you talking about, taani!" He asks frustrated. Her pout grew.

"Don't act stupid! I know...you want 'sex'!!" She laughed as if she has cracked a million dollar joke.

"What the.." Shocked and stunned, he took a back step.

"I know..you all men.." And suddenly her eyes glittered with tears. " ..you all are same." He remain quiet. "..You all want the same thing." She pushed her lower lip growing her pout more. Alcohol seem to grow completely over her mind.

"Taani I.."

"Especially the girls like me!" She cut him in between. Her eyes glittering more, her face pale and her dark circles more visible now. "You think we are only made for a single thing??" She asked as if in disbelief. He was in misery and chose to stay mum. " That's not true, Rey..I have a heart too." And out of nowhere, came a sob.

"I know."

"No, you don't!!" She shouted.

"You are so busy with your Miss. Blonde to notice me!" Jealousy spit out with each word of hers. " Am I just a time pass?"

"Taani!!" He warned. "Lets get you in the room. We'll discuss this tomorrow." He admonishes and that's it. The topic is over for him. Holding her hand, he turned only to find Rajeev at a distance looking at the two cautiously as if gauging something. He gave a hard stern glare and started pulling taani back to the hotel.

"No!!!" She shouted loudly shrugging away his hand as she suddenly lost her balance. Her another fall prevented by Rajeev who came from behind to support her stumbling body. Rey's face hardens.

"Taani come." Avoiding the men holding her from her shoulders, he forwarded his hand.

"No, I said!" And she is angry. Hell angry! Tears streamed in her eyes and she felt an urgent need to cry. This guy thinks he has a control over you. Show him!! Her alcohol driven mind shouted.

"What am I to you?" She asked feebly. Rey's brow creases not understanding the depth of her question. His gaze shifted to Rajeev who is standing though uncomfortably.

"Can't we discuss this alone?!" He asked frustrated. Rajeev loosen his grip to move away.

"No stay!" She said turning to Rajeev, holding back his hands. "I need support." She murmured feeling dizzy.

"Tell me!" Her gaze turn back to Rey. She tried too hard to keep her eyes open.

"You are my friend." He said giving up.

"Just friend?" Hopelessness is quite evident in her voice.

"Best friends." He emphasized.

"Still friends!" She giggled may be on her luck. His brow creases in confusion.

"What do you want, taani?" He felt losing his mind in the entire conversation.

"Love.." She murmured giving her entire weight to Rajeev. He wrapped his arms tighter earning a hard glare from Rey. "Love.." She repeated, her eyes glittering with fresh tears...agony..pain..loneliness and some incoherent feelings.

"Taani, come to me!" Rey said sternly asking her to get out of Rajeev's hold.

"NO!!!" She shouted taking a back step, now out of Rajeev's hold as well. "No.." Her voice suddenly drops again as she looked at the wet sand beneath her feet like it's the weirdest thing he had seen. After a momentary pause, she looked back at Rey, now completely forgetting Rajeev's presence. Her eyes horribly red as they show her vulnerability.

"Do you want me, Rey?" She murmured, her eyes meeting his. He instantly took a step forward to hold her. The balancing was eventually a hard job for her.

"Taani, lets go. We'll talk in the morning." He ignored the question.

"No! No!! No!!! Just answer me now!" Her lungs void of air, as she shouted on top of her voice.

"Of course I want you. You are my best friend, taani!" Maintaining all his cool, he said as calmly as he can.

"No. Not like a friend..." And came another sob. "Do you want me...like, more than a friend?" He halted, his heart thumping in his chest. His eyes widen and lips parted. The cool land breeze helped in nothing. His mind was burning with too many things.

"Taani.."

"Just.Answer.Me." She emphasized. She successfully balanced herself for a few seconds, looking straight in his eyes. Controlling her drunken state very well, she cleared all the fuzz for a few seconds. She just needed an answer.

"Answer me,...please." Another sob followed. Her voice almost became inaudible.

"I don't." He kept the stern face and all the strength leaves her body immediately. She stumbled once again and as Rey's hands came forward to hold her, she instantly made him stop holding her hand forward.

"You don't." She murmured getting lost in her thoughts. "You don't love me?" She asked once again, as if to give one more chance.

"No." He whispered not knowing what to say next.

"But I do.." His eyes widen, air leaving his lungs as the entire ability to think properly faded away. "I love you, Rey." She bit her lips stifling her sob. Tears escaped her red, swollen eyes.

"Taani, you know everything...like..in between us...you know it was never like that. We always knew what we wanted!" He said getting hyper, feeling everything slipping away.

"We knew.." She paused taking a step ahead. "But I want more now!" Fury took the front seat as pain hid behind. "..And I can see you don't want the same." She hissed.

"Taani, try to understand yaar!! You know my problems more than anyone else can. You know the extreme reasons of me never getting into a relationship. Then how can you still say that?!" His heart bleed with pleads. He want his companion, his best friend back.

"I know everything..I know your problems. But what about me?!! What about my problems?! I have fallen in love with you, Rey!! What about that!" He remained silent, feeling void of words. She chuckled sarcastically as his lips remain joined in a straight hard line. "What should I do?" Her eyelids heaving under alcohol effect, she made extra efforts to keep them open. She suddenly felt something building up inside her, deep in her stomach. "What...should...I..." The feeling grew more with each word, coming upward in her stomach, passing her oesophagus and reaching her throat. Her mind throbbed, her eyes heavy and her limbs as soft as jelly, she felt an urgent need to throw up. In the extreme effects of alcohol, she lost her senses as without a wait or control, she vomited in front of Rey, the throw up falling straight on his leather shoes. He stepped back in shock as she got her back straight again and exhaled. The corner of her mouth still hold the remains of what lied on sand and rey's shoes. The whole strength faded away, her legs feeling like jelly and another moment, she gave up on her body falling on the ground. Rey stepped forward to hold her only to find Rajeev paced up and leaning to get her back on her feet. Her eyes on the verge of closing, she started getting another nausea building up inside her. Rajeev leaned her a little as she threw up once again, this time entirely on sand. She took a deep breathe and get back straight. Her stomach growled indicating that finally its over and same was the case with her senses. Losing her entire weight over Rajeev, she passed off.

"I'll take her to her room." Rajeev said, his voice casual as if nothing happened. He never intended to peep in their private matters. Its really...absurd. Rey remains mum, for the first time unable to glare off this guy who is holding taani through her shoulders. He felt too weak to think anything else. Different moments in his life munched up in his brain, all mixing up and suddenly he don't know how to feel. He felt extremely confused.

Taking taani's one hand over his shoulder, and wrapping one of his hands around her waist, Rajeev took her along as they went towards their room. Rey looked at their retreating back, her words coming back to him.

"I love you, Rey."

"But I want more now!"

"I know everything..I know your problems. But what about me?!! What about my problems?! I have fallen in love with you, Rey!! What about that!"

The words echoed in his brain like a nightmare, giving him sweats and pants. This is the ultimate f*cked up situation, he has ever been. Yes, this is really the most complicated points in his life and suddenly the inspiration hits him. All this is happening because in one cursed moment, he decided to start a No Strings Attached relationship with a girl, who might have ended up with him just being his best friend, the coolest buddy and now they both are stuck in the most puzzled and stupid thing, anyone can ever be in-Love in the mid of No Strings Attached. He growled at his ultimate failure moving straight to the person who brought all this on him.

"Swayam!!" Rey shouted startling the cuddling swaron in a corner of the party venue. The place seems almost empty with only a few people, probably on a high, took either the dance floor or a secluded corner. Swaron chose the later.

"Sshhh!! Sharon is sleeping." Swayam warns. He slowly gets out of her arms which were until now wrapped around his chest. Keeping her head over the cushion kept nearby, he left his dear wife to sleep on a white and red bedded mattress, to listen to his over aggravated friend. Sharon cuddled with the cushion, sleeping quietly.

"What?!" Swayam tried keeping his eyes open as he himself was high with alcohol.

"Taani loves me!" Rey said getting panicked. Swayam's eyes snapped open in shock, widening towards his insane friend.

"Okk!!" Swayam gave a shocked chuckle. "This is the worst joke ever!"

"Its not a joke!" Rey's stern expressions remain the same.

"Are you mad or what?! Taani...Taani Vaidyanathan..The Chennai Tigress...loves YOU!!!"

"Yes, the same." Rey shrugged his over-shocked expressions.

"Dude! You evaporated my entire hangover!" He hissed angrily, catching his throbbing head. "C'mon lets talk at the bar." He nudged moving towards the bar which stayed open even now.

"I love you Rey.." She murmured to herself trying to run faster than Rajeev.

"Taani!" He called catching her pace.

"I love him.." Her inaudible murmurs reach his ears through the silence in the corridor.

"I know.." He said trying to balm her broken heart.

"I love him..." She drowned back to sleep once again while they almost reached her room. Holding her through her waist, as she rested her entire weight over his shoulders, he looked for the keys only to realise that she might have forgotten her clutch and the keys in the party. He snorted not having a clue what to do. Running his mind, he was about to reach over the decision to take her inside his room when a small statured man appeared under the feebly luminous ceiling lights. Holding a tray in his hands, he seem to be a waiter carrying late night orders.

"Hey! Excuse Me!!" Rajeev called. The man followed the voice reaching the two, looking slightly confused.

"Do you have spare keys to this room?!" He asked keeping his tone stern. The waiter looks over the drunk Taani then slightly furious Rajeev and then back at taani. Rajeev snorted. He isn't used to wait. "Do you have the keys or not?!!!" He shouted loudly almost startling the man. With a little fumbling hands, he pulled out a key from his pocket. Rajeev stepped back and the man quickly opened the door, only to leave back to his work immediately after that. Seeing him fade away at the far end of corridor, Rajeev carried taani inside the room. His hands searched the switch and after a few trials, the living room lightened up with the decorative lights. Carrying her sleeping figure forward, he entered another room, once again flipping the switches and this time it's the bedroom, sort of. The whole room looked a mess with clothes, shoes and sandals lying from bed to the edge of the wall. While Rajeev cleared the mess over the bed, he made taani lie on the nearby couch. He looked back at her once sure that the bed looks at least a place to sleep. She was lying on her back, her one hand and one leg out of the territory of the couch, her lips corners covered with a little saliva, her make-up all smudged and her hairs nothing but a complete mess.

Removing her peep-toe sandals, he get her out of the couch, pulling her to the bed. She immediately let go under the warmth of comforter and her pillow, going into a deep sleep. Settling her comforter a little more cozily, he looked at her sleeping figure under the luminosity of lights within the room. Her words echoed in his mind somehow ripping his heart apart.

"I love you, Rey."

"But I want more now!" "..And I can see you don't want the same."

He felt his eyes glittering with the fresh tears and unknowingly he choked them back. All this while he was strong and he is not going to break the rules. His eyes roam on her face only to stop on her tears strained cheeks and once again, her words haunted him.

"I know..you all men...you all are same..You all want the same thing."

"You think we are only made for a single thing??"

" That's not true, Rey..I have a heart too."

He removed the tears collecting at the corner of his eyes. And suddenly he can't help it..after so much of self-control, he can't help it. Her pain..her agony reached straight to his heart. He can connect and he knows exactly what it feels like. The pain in love..and the hurt of betrayal, he knew it all. To be left alone, to cry over your fate..your lost love, he knew it. He knew it because he has seen the same.

And in that unguarded moment, he suddenly felt his tongue slipping and his entire emotions coming up in just three words, "I understand, taani."
