"I am tired. I can't do it anymore."
"You knew what you were signing up for when you agreed to go out with me. Now if in the middle, you come to me crying that you can't do it anymore, then I am sorry to say that you are nothing but a coward."
He didn't know where the words were coming out from but he did know that he didn't mean it and they certainly weren't from his heart. It had been an hour since they were fighting over this but those giving up words had pierced his heart and stirred something inside him. He was standing with his fists closed so tightly that his knuckles had turned white and his head was throbbing like it would burst anytime but honestly who cared when the pain was too deep within his chest and could only be gone by the person who caused it at the first place. He knew that his words were instigating immense pain to her, hurting him in a way but this was important. Important for her to realize the complexity of this situation. He turned his face from the window to once again look at her and seeing her so helpless, all his resolve broke. He rushed to her in two strides and gathered her up in his arms very gently as if she was a glass doll who could break any moment. She resisted it at first but then snuggled more into him to find the much needed comfort and told him in a low whisper:
"It will be easy for both of us Arnav. I am not scared of the world but I am just worried about our loved ones. I just want everyone to be happy, is that too much to ask?"
She asked him with her innocent doe shaped eyes like a child and he couldn't help but fall in love with her yet again. Every time, she looked up at him with those eyes, he knew he was a gone case. Today the very same hazel eyes that always twinkled with mischief, love and warmth were shining with nothing but tears, tears of pain and vulnerability. That undid him and he pulled her to a couch beside her and knelt in front of her, taking her small hands in his own.
"Khushi I have told you this before and I'm telling you now. We got into this relationship because we love each other and we thought that all the pain was worth it. We've come a long way and don't you think that at this final stage, it would be nothing but regret in future if you back out now?"
She shook her head at him and asked in a broken voice:
"I love you too and I can't stay away from you either. I know that I should not chicken out but please you have to believe me when I say this that it's difficult for me. I give a damn to the society but what about our parents?"
He smiled at the childlike woman in front of him. He had always admired this thing about her. She didn't care about the world but always ensured that her family was pleased with her. Be it because of her education, morals or values, she had never disappointed them and it was this very fact that ate her from inside, to fail the ones she loved from the day she came to know the meaning of that word.
"As long as I have you with me, I don't care. Honestly, Khushi they are our parents and I don't think they will ever want us to be unhappy. We will try to convince them and I am sure they will understand. Are you in this with me?"
After seeing so much determination in his eyes, she nodded her head and hugged him knowing that she had to stay strong for them. She had promised him that she will never leave him and she could never see him hurt. Both of them had to be brave enough for this journey together and now wasn't the time to be weak. Now was the time to fight, fight for their love.
To everyone, it might seem a simple love story but it wasn't. It was a story of two people irrevocably in love with each other but not accepted by the society because of the different beliefs they shared. Yes, Arnav Richard was a Christian and Khushi Gupta was a Hindu and they were hopelessly in love.
