Sanyukta was busy designing the Kitchen alarm systems for the smart house. She had made the blueprints and was joining the parts according to the directions. "I am so happy", said Sahil. "Aj our Smart House will have a body thanks to Divergent!" Sanyukta was highly intimidated and nervous. She knew that her older brother would walk in any minute. Along with his band of followers. God knows what he would say. Does he even know that his sister works at SanCorp and is a part of the Smart House project? Before leaving Shimla,Sanyukta had left a long letter to her family, explaining why she had to run away from the captivity of the orthodox lifestyle her father had compelled her to live. She had mentioned that "if things go according to her plan, I would soon join SanCorp. And that is a good thing, not a bad thing. So there is nothing to be ashamed of." Sanyukta was completely out of focus when suddenly, Randhir placed another file in front of her with a noise so loud that it almost gave her a heart-attack.
"Day dreaming huh?" asked Randhir.
"What do you want Randhir?" asked an infuriated Sanyukta.
"What I want is for you to pay absolute attention. This is a very demanding project. A lot of hard work has gone down to make this. I don't care if Vardhan sir trusts your instincts, but I certainly don't."
Sanyukta looked around for a minute to see if anybody was seeing them. "Look at me when I am talking to you. You can dream all you want back home, when you have plenty of girly' stuffs to do!" said Randhir loudly enough for a couple of people to look at them. They had already anticipated that something was wrong between Sanyukta and Randhir. The entire company was aware of Randhir's short temper but they just did not understand why Randhir had a special tiff with Sanyukta.
"Dekho,I am doing everything that I am supposed to do. If you need me on something else, you need only ask",said Sanyukta.
"Like that will help you get your mind off all the things",said Randhir. "Maybe your father is right, girls are supposed to be married off". And saying this he went back to his bench.
Sanyukta could not believe what she had just heard. That thing about her father was a part of the conversation that Randhir and Sanyukta had both decided to leave behind, along with so many other things. But he still brought that up just because she was a little distracted. Sanyukta left her work and went to Randhir's bench. He was leaning down at some machine and was fixing the screws. She did not want to attract attention so she tried to whisper. "What the hell?" she said. "Why are you bringing up a part of that night's conversation? I thought we decided to leave all that behind. Isn't that what you had wanted?"
Randhir looked up at her. "That's right,I do want to leave all that rubbish behind. But only if you allow me."
"What are you trying to say?"
"You put your brain, if you have any that is, into some other unnecessary thing and compromise this project, I promise you I will bring up everything that you told me about your life that night."
"Oh really? And what makes you think that I won't bring up your personal stuff..."
"Will you?" asked Randhir. He stared straight through her eyes. She could not reply back. Even though she desperately wanted to. Sanyukta did not say anything and quietly went back to her bench.
Randhir knew her well. That night,she almost gave a part of her life to him by telling him everything. He knew well that Sanyukta would never use someone's personal secrets and bad memories against him. Even if they did the same to her. Sanyukta was furious. She never anticipated the guy she had told everything, the guy she secretly longed to meet again would be the same guy who would make her suffer when she was just about to prove her father wrong on all the principles. But she knew she had to survive. This is the real world. There is no escape plan. "Survive!" she remembered Neha saying to her the first time they met in Delhi. But how?
Just then the peon entered again and asked the entire team to assemble in Vardhan sir's office.
"Can my day get any worse?" thought Sanyukta.
She saw Vidushee finger-combing her crumbled hair and another girl applying a little lip gloss. Sanyukta,however,made no attempt to look better. She knew whom she was meeting.
As they approached Vardhan Shukla's office,they saw the door open and plenty of people were assembled already. Some were laughing others were chatting. Sanyukta saw Vardhan,leaning on his desk, shaking hands with someone, a smile on his face for the first time it seemed. Randhir knocked on the open wooden door and immediately everyone looked at them, including the man who was shaking hands with Vardhan.
Sanyukta froze. Her eyes were fixed on the man who was grinning back at her with a devilish look. "May we come in ?" asked Randhir.
"Ah,yes yes do come in",said Vardhan and straightened up. "Welcome my Smart Team'".
They all walked in. Jiggy looked at all the new faces that had arrived from Mumbai. Everybody seemed excited. But only Sanyukta knew what terrifying it was. Her eyes were still fixed on Ankit,who pretended not to notice her at all.
Vardhan gestured them to enter and introduced them one at a time. And finally, when it was Ankit's time to be introduced to the gang, Vardhan looked at Sanyukta and said, "Sanyukta,why didn't you tell me that your brother works at Divergent when I mentioned it to you yesterday?"
Sanyukta froze and looked at Vardhan and then shifter to Ankit and back at Vardhan again. Jiggy was standing beside her and Sanyukta heard him say "What?" softly. Everyone was shocked, especially Randhir. He looked at Sanyukta who was still looking at Vardhan with a blank expression and seemed to be at lost for words. Just then Ankit interrupted the silence "Actually I told her not to mention me. I thought it might seem a bit...I don't know...awkward."
Vardhan looked at Ankit but did not say anything. Raj Nayar said, "Understandable completely. Anyways,without wasting anymore time,shall we talk business?"
"Absolutely",said a young man who was tall and was standing beside Ankit.
"Parth is very passionate about his work. He is one of our most trusted employees",said Ankit. He seemed very cheerful and smiled at everyone. Vidushee smiled back and reached out her hand and said "Welcome to Delhi". "Thank you,looking forward to it a lot",he replied.
"Ankit told me that you are equally passionate about machines and gadgets too Sanyukta",said Raj Nayar.
Sanyukta could not believe her ears. But she knew what she had just heard and did not know how to respond. "Ofcourse. Ever since she was a young girl,she always knew what she wanted to be and was willing to do anything to achieve her goals. She was actually the one who inspired me to become the architect I am now",said Ankit and smiled at Sanyukta.
"He has become good at lying",thought Sanyukta. Obviously there had to be an ulterior motive as to why Ankit was saying all these good things about Sanyukta. Inspired him? Maybe in his nightmares. Sanyukta just smiled and nodded to avoid any unnecessary doubts among everyone who were present in the room. Vardhan still hadn't said a word but just remained quiet. :I think we should head towards the project area and give you a briefing",said Randhir.
"Mr,Shukla,you mind if I have a word with my sister alone?" asked Ankit. "We'll catch up soon as we are done".
"Ofcourse",said Vardhan and soon they all evacuated the room leaving only Sanyukta and Ankit.
"What the hell?" asked Sanyukta furiously.
"What? I just saved you dignity infront of your bosses",said Ankit. "You look different".
"Forget about my looks,I want to know why are you suddenly acting nicely with me?"
"Simple",said Ankit. "I don't know if you know the world of corporate very well or not,but the last thing a company like SanCorp wants is a runaway daughter who disgraced her entire family infront of her hometown just because she was too selfish to marry the man who could have made her happy".
"What are you saying? Are you still upset because I said I won't marry that guy who sells tea?"
"Entrepreneur! There is a difference. The marriage would have spared our parents the trouble. Now they still have to worry about you. You are 25 years old Sanyukta. It is about time you got married and have kids.",said Ankit. "Why are you dressed that way?"
"None of your business!" said Sanyukta loudly.
"Actually it is. I have to know You do know that mom and dad are strictly against love marriages. so if you are trying to impress a guy by wearing all these..."
"How dare you?" said Sanyukta,pointing her finger to Ankit. "Don't you dare talk to me like that!"
"Wow wow wow!"said Ankit and pushed her finger down. "Somebody got a complete make-over it seemed. Well you might want to keep your words to yourself. I talked to dad about coming here. And I have got another man fixed for your wedding".
"What?!" shouted Sanyukta.
"Quiet! You don't want to create a scene here",said Ankit and looked out of the door to make sure nobody was outside.
"Dekh bhai",Sanyukta was close o tears "Don't do this to me. I really need this job. I am loving this. I have always dreamt of coming here,don't take this away from me like this".
"Too bad you don't have a say here",said Ankit,slyly. "This man works with me and I know he will keep you happy. You don't have to work. He will give you everything you require and desire. So I don't see what the problem is."
"So you are just setting me up so that dad can say what a son he has!" said Sanyukta
"No,ofcourse not!" said Ankit. "I am doing this so that everybody can say what a son I am."
Sanyukta was ready to beg Ankit to reconsider this idea. But she knew there was no changing his mind. If Ankit's mind was set in getting her married to someone he worked with,he would do it. and now Sanyukta could not even run. If she did,where would she go? It would be a fresh start all over again, and maybe Ankit would find her again. "Mind taking me to see your project?" asked Ankit. Sanyukta turned around and he followed.
At the work area, every architect Ankit had brought from Divergent seemed to be impressed with the idea and progress of the Smart House. They complimented the idea and the designs. "This is a true creation. We should be thanking you all for letting us be a part of this",said Parth.
"Well,this Smart House won't be a Smart House without Divergent's vision of the perfect structure",said Randhir. He was feeling proud that the project was being appreciated by all,because he was the head of this great idea. Just then Sanyukta entered with Ankit. Randhir saw them and his smile vanished.
"Well,what do you guys think?" asked Ankit.
"We think this will be a great success. They have done brilliantly so far. I am so happy with the designs and the innovations",said Parth. "Dekho". And saying this he gave Ankit a blueprint.
"Arrey its okay",said Ankit. "I trust you with this Parth. If you think this is a great piece of creation,then we should get to work immediately."
"I agree completely",said Vardhan. "The faster this project goes to the floors,the better."
"Your team will be working in room 15B,we have arranged for everything that you require but please do not hesitate to ask for anything",said Raj Nayar.
"Please,we'll make ourselves home here in Delhi and we're sure that you have provided with everything",said Ankit. "Guys come one,read the prints and get to work."
Sanyukta was standing and looking at Ankit. She was thrown at Ankit's intentions of getting her married. Surely that was the exact reason why he even volunteered to be a part of this project in the first place.
"Hi",said Parth and distracted Sanyukta. "I'm Parth Kashyap. I work with your brother."
"Hi"said Sanyukta,trying to be as polite as possible.
"How long have you been in Delhi? I have been here for a few hours only and am already loving the energy of this city. And ofcourse SanCorp".
"Good to know"said Sanyukta. She saw Ankit talking to Randhir about something.
"Ankit has told me so much about you",said Parth. "Your passion,your determination,your diligence,its all very impressive".
Sanyukta frowned a little and looked at Parth. "He said that about me?" she asked.
"Yes",he replied.
"Well forgive me if I find that a little hard to believe",said Sanyukta.
"Why? I mean, you two are siblings right? It is genuine to praise one another. And besides,you are a part of such a delegated project. surely you have that some talent and passion otherwise you wouldn't have been a part of this",said Parth.
Vardhan and Raj Nayar sir left. Sanyukat was about to answer Parth's question but she was interrupted by Randhir. "Sanyukta , I need to talk to you." And saying this he left the room. Sanyukta looked at Ankit who was busy explaining something to Jiggy and then excused herself from Parth. She followed Randhir to a corner of the corridor.
"What?" she asked,irritated. Randhir's outburst was the last thing she needed that day.
"You did not tell me that your brother works at Divergent."
"I am sorry,did I sign a contract stating I have to tell you everything about myself?"
"Spare me the sarcasm Sanyukta Aggarwal and answer my question!"
"Listen,I am not obliged to tell you everything. You re no one but my employee. You have nothing on me. Then why should I tell you everything about my life?"
"I told you everything about my life that night..."
"Yes,a night we mutually decided to put behind us and move on. Then why bring it up now?"
"You are unbelievable! First you use me like you have a right on me or something and now you are avoiding my questions by using things about me..."
"Stop! Just stop! Use you? I hardly knew who you were that night until our formal meeting. Don't you dare put such allegations on me Randhir or..."
"Or? Or what?"Randhir grabbed Sanyukta arms tightly.
"Or I'll report you to Human Resources against harassment!" Sanyukta was really angry and Randhir could see it through her eyes.
Randhir let go off Sanyukta and said, "So desperate. Wouldn't it be a treat for the world to know that a girl like you were actually noticed by a guy like me who tried to take advantage."
"Go to hell!" and saying this Sanyukta went back into the room everyone was busy with the Smart House project.
