Part 3

Everyone else was dancing with abandon and hadn't a single care in the world. Randhir & Sanyukta were lost in their own worlds. Soon, the night passed by and everyone started falling asleep, one by one. Since the entire batch except two people had stayed up the entire night, they were sleeping all through the day. The journey was uneventful until late afternoon on the second day of travelling. The bus had made a pit stop near a typical dhaba as the driver wanted a tea break. The bus driver, Sanyukta & Randhir got off the bus to move around a little bit and stretched their legs. The weather was thankfully pleasant. They ate a little bit at the dhaba and Randhir & Sanyukta walked at a distance, around the area to discover a village. They informed the driver that they would return in a while, as they did not want to be left behind. As they walked closer and closer to the village, they realized that there was a cluster of people surrounding what seemed to be a scene. They were enthusiastically shouting encouraging chants in hindi.

Randhir thought that there must be a fight happening. He wanted to go ahead and stop it, so he broke right through the circle of people. He was greeted with dozens of red, black and white feathers and also handfuls of mud. He couldn't find his bearings, as he didn't realize what he had walked into. What he had thought was a fight turned out to be a simple, daily village task. And this task had caused him to bang into a well-built villager and consequently fall hard on the muddy ground.

As soon as he fell on the ground, he heard a loud chuckle. The laughter sounded like it had emanated from a person who wasn't feeling too much in their element lately. It was sudden, intuitive and honest. He didn't know any villagers to judge if they were in their element lately or not, so it could only be one person. Sanyukta. She was laughing because he was lying flat on his back, covered in mud and ruffled feathers. Seeing that the man on the ground wasn't angry with the woman laughing at him, the villagers also joined Sanyukta. They went on laughing until they realized that Randhir didn't find it funny anymore.

The source of the feathers was now resting peacefully on his stomach. A rooster. He couldn't bear to see it on himself, so he got up quickly and forced the rooster off him, which caused the rooster to give off an annoying moan. Randhir went and stood near Sanyukta. He smiled lightly at her, knowing that she wasn't anymore the weird girl who had gotten on the bus yesterday. Surprised by himself, he wasn't too annoyed now. Everyone around him was laughing at his expense and he didn't seem to mind.

Only when he stood in the circle with the villagers and Sanyukta did he realize what was really happening. The tall, well-built and muscular villager was trying to catch the rooster! And it had been cleverly eluding him time & again! The rooster went to the left and the villager went to the left too. The rooster went to the right and the villager went to the right as well. The rooster darted straight ahead and the villager also dived ahead & fell on the ground, but failed to catch him! It almost seemed as if the rooster was enjoying himself while troubling the poor villager. The villagers in the circle and Sanyukta were in splits watching the situation before them! It seemed like a very silly thing to laugh at for Randhir, but nevertheless, he let himself go and joined the rest of the circle. He couldn't believe that Sanyukta and him agreed on such a small, silly thing. Maybe she wasn't the only the feminist, headstrong girl he knew. She had another side to her, a side that made her who she really was. Randhir didn't know it but he most definitely liked this side of hers. He felt like the child that had died when his mother left him was coming back strongly, and he wasn't going to stop his arrival. He felt alive and relieved after so, so long.

Sanyukta, on the other hand, forgot about her family issues and even about the engineering expo and absolutely lost herself in the moment. She didn't notice that Randhir had noticed the other side of her and hadn't passed any snide comments. She only realized that the smallest things in life have the power to help us smile, but only if we let them.

Let me help him out of this plight, thought Randhir finally. So, he went back into the middle of the circle and with swift movements of both hands, caught the rooster and immediately felt a collective sigh of gratitude from the villagers and primarily from the "strong" villager who was in the middle of the circle all along. He handed the rooster over to the muscular villager and humbly received his dhanyavad.

Before he could say anything, Sanyukta laughed again was about to say something.

Part 4

"Thank God you caught the rooster and saved the poor villager. I can't imagine the amount of time for which he must have been trying to catch that shop of feathers!" said Sanyukta and laughed again.

"See, you should believe me when I say that nothing is impossible for me," replied Randhir with a tinge of sarcasm and innocuousness.

"Yeah, right," said Sanyukta with an equal amount of innocence and sarcasm. "Tum itne bhi bure nai ho, Randhir," said Sanyukta mischievously as they had walked back to the bus and were about to board it.

"Mujhe tumhare opinion ki koi zarurat nai hai," replied Randhir confidently and they boarded the bus and took their seats. The driver began driving and they were on their way again.

He was glad that the old Sanyukta who had challenged his every opinion and poked fun at him every time, was back. He felt awkward dealing with the serious and weird Sanyukta. Now that they were pulling each other's legs, he felt that she could become his most loyal ally if only the competition between them hadn't existed. But alas, it did even though he wished it didn't. From now on, he was going to make this competition even more eventful for Ms. Agarwal to test her wholly and see her every color and shade.

Sanyukta was happy to have her mind off her family problems. Although she did wonder why Mr. Sadu was strangely so nice. No outright snide comments, no threats, nothing. He must have thought he was talking to someone else and not me, she thought. It could even be some stupid plan of his, thought Sanyukta again and brushed these thoughts out of her mind.

As the bus was moving again, Randhir opened the curtains and succumbed to his love for travelling. Meanwhile, Sanyukta decided to study for a while since she had brought her books and the bus was silent as everyone was still sleeping.

Kaustuki stirred in her seat after maybe an hour or two and asked Sanyukta what time it was. She said it was nearly 8 and they were about to stop again at a dhaba for dinner. Kaustuki couldn't believe that they had slept the entire day. She quickly went and woke Jiggy up and eventually everyone else woke up too and freshened up for dinner. As everyone alighted from the bus, Randhir happened to be right behind Sanyukta. They got off and faced each other for a few seconds and didn't know what to do. Sanyukta was the first to break the eyelock as the intelligent part of her brain told her that it might really be another trick of Randhir's. Randhir followed suit too and carried on with Jiggy for dinner, as did Sanyukta with Kaustuki.

They all relished the typically dhaba-made Indian food, had their fill and boarded the bus again. The bus began to move and they were getting closer to their destination. They would be in Delhi the next morning and their excitement attained an all-new level altogether. They slept like babies, as they needed all their faculties intact for the following day.

Guys! Too excited, so updating the 5th part now as well! Please, please read, like and tell me what you think!

Part 5

She didn't realize where the sound was coming from. She felt like somebody was hovering above her and she was suspended in mid-air. Somebody threw water on her and she woke up with a jerk. Its just a bad dream, its just a bad dream, she kept thinking to herself. The driver cam up to her and said, "Madam ji, bus ka engine kharab ho gaya hai. Aas paas main koi mechanic bhi nai hai. Aap aake dekh lo na." So somebody was hovering over her. "Aapne mujhpe paani kyun pheka?" Sanyukta asked the driver in anger! "Arrey woh, aap uth nai rahi thi isi liye. Main ek ghante se dekhne ki try kar raha hun, par engine main problem kya hai who pata hi nahi chal raha."

"Theek hai, par agli baar se, paani mat phekna," she warned him. "Okay, madam ji. Aap bas ek baar aake dekh lo."

"Haan, aati hun," she replied. Saying so, she drank some water and made her way outside. The driver help up a torch, so she could examine the engine better. "Aapne mujhe hi kyun uthaya?" she asked to make small talk.

"Mujhe laga ki aap gussa nahi karoge. Pehle socha ki Randhir bhai ko utha dun. Par phir yaad aya ki woh kitna gussa hote hain." She smiled to herself and said, "Haan, woh toh hai". She examined the engine and thought that it all looked like it was in place. She went on to examine the water pipe and realized it was leaking. "Problem water pipe main hai, bhaiya," she told him.

"Toh usko theek kaise karenge?" he asked. "Aap bas dekhte jao," she said confidently.

She began tightening the water pipe in order to stop the leaking. She felt like a surgeon, who was fixing a human body to prolong its lifespan. She couldn't express the feeling in her heart when she had diagnosed the problem and begun to fix it. She was smiling all through the simple fix. While she was at it, the driver asked to be excused and went inside the bus. She agreed and let him go. The driver went inside and woke Randhir up. He asked him to only stand near the door and watch Sanyukta fix the pipe, as the driver wanted to be sure that she was doing it correctly. She had been at the engine for nearly 10 minutes. He didn't trust the girl, he said. He didn't know whom else to wake up, so he had to make do with her, he said. He also didn't want to hurt her by calling somebody else to inspect, as it would hurt her self-confidence. Randhir asked the driver if the rest of the engine was fine. The driver replied that it was and only the water pipe had a leak. Randhir went ahead and stood near the door, silently watching Sanyukta fix the pipe. The driver went outside again and stood next to Sanyukta.

Randhir could see the smile on her face, while she was fixing it. She had this glow about her when she was near machines and Randhir had not failed to notice that even back in college. He knew how different a bus engine is from the other engines they had come across and was quite impressed to see Sanyukta identify the problem and fix it in a matter of minutes. He noticed all her arm movements and was assured that she was on the right track. Finally, Sanyukta was certain that the leak had been fixed and asked the driver to start the engine. He passed by the door, glanced at Randhir, got an assuring nod from him and started the engine. To Sanyukta's delight, the engine roared and burst into life. She placed her hands close to her face and whiffed the grease on her hands as if there were exotic roses instead. Grease would give off an odor to other girls, but to her it was the most pleasing fragrance. Randhir saw Sanyukta at that moment and a newfound respect for her grew in him. She is the only girl I know who would bathe in grease if I asked her to, he thought.

"Ab toh iss farzi engineer ke liye kuch special karna hi padega," he smugly thought to himself and quickly got onto the bus. Sanuyukta washed her hands and got onto the bus as well. They would now reach Delhi in a few hours.

But they did not know that causing the water pipe to leak at night was Vardhan's plan. He had instructed the driver carefully and it went according to plan. He wanted Randhir to realize that Sanyukta was tough competition and that he shouldn't underestimate her. Sanyukta knew that Randhir was competition and she never undermined him. So that part of the equation wasn't required to be fixed by Vardhan.

Vardhan wasn't aware of what had occurred in the minds of his two students but he spoke to the driver who had assured him that it all went according to plan and that there was no sign of anger on Randhir's face. Vardhan was satisfied because he knew that his plans never failed. Never.
