Hey again, guys! Sorry, couldn't pm anyone as exams are on my head. So sorry again!
Part 11
Everyday she came to see him. It had been 2 weeks since the earthquake. She still came each and every day. As if it were a daily temple visit.
She didn't mind the drive from Roorkee to Delhi every day because she got to see him. They had their fights as usual but also the most interesting discussions on all aspects of mechanical engineering. He helped her with a few parts of the academics that she didn't understand. She kept him up to date with everything that was going on in college. Yo Yo's pranks, Jiggy's and Kaustuki's ever-growing mushy love, Vidushi's stupid tactics to escape work and assignments and finally, Vardhaan Sir's behavior and assignments which seemed like they were from another planet. She had this glimmer in her eyes when she spoke about the fun they had in college while learning about machines and he hadn't failed to notice that. To be true, he was a little jealous that she was happy without his presence. "But don't you worry, farzi. That'll change soon," he thought.
Believe it or not, they had become friends. Because of these circumstances that were written from above to draw them to each other, time and again. They could talk about anything from machines to music. When there was nothing to talk about, they would just enjoy the other's company silently. That was how strong the attachment was between them. They realized that the other person was as decent as any other. They decided to make the competition as healthy as they could between them. No dirty pranks. No jokes. Only the hunger to be the best and complete knowledge of machines inspired them.
But there was one thing they never spoke about. His mother. She had asked him once if his mother had come to visit. He replied that he would never want her to come. Also, he made it firmly clear that he never wanted to talk about her. She agreed and never broached the topic even though she reckoned that his mother was the cause of his harsh behavior towards womankind. She still advised him to put his past behind him and move forward. He said he couldn't assure her, but he would try.
Today's visit was just like any other except Sanyukta was not alone. Yo Yo, Kaustuki, Jiggy and Vidushi had also joined her. She didn't mind it because company would do him good. He had been shifted from the ICU floor to a normal room, because he had been doing well over the past few days. Soon enough, they reached his room at AIIMS. Sanyukta waved her customary hello to his father and entered his room. He was awake and going through physical therapy. "Hey, farzi!" he greeted. "Randhir, please give me a decent nickname," she requested and chuckled. "Hmm. I'll think about it," he said with an innocent smirk. "I have a surprise for you today," she said. "I don't like surprises. Especially what you girls bring. Chocolates and movie CDs and what not," he grunted.
"This surprise, you're going to love!" she exclaimed. Randhir tried to look excited. "Ready?" she asked. He nodded. Just then, Jiggy held out a bunch of papers from outside the room door. Randhir & Sanyukta could only see the papers, not Jiggy's face. The papers read "Vardhaan Sir's most difficult sums." Randhir was delighted. "Finally, Sanyukta decided to do something smart," he said to the air with innocence. She rolled her eyes just to annoy him.
"Randhir bhai! At least call us inside," Jiggy yelled from outside the door. "Arrey Jiggy! What are you doing here? Everyone else also come in too!" Randhir yelled back.
One by one, everyone came in and met Randhir. He was happy to meet his friends after so long. They all chatted for long and had a merry time, while Sanyukta and Randhir were giving each other the I-know,-right?! looks. Both of them had already laughed about the things that their friends were saying. But nevertheless, they laughed the same so their friends wouldn't feel awkward.
Just then, a girl about the same age as them walked inside the room. She was tall, fair and almost as beautiful as Sanyukta. She cut past the other people in the room and went straight to Randhir's bed without paying any attention to anyone else. Sanyukta didn't know this girl. Maybe she's a patient in one of the neighboring rooms, thought Sanyukta as the girl was wearing hospital scrubs too.
The girl went and hugged Randhir as if they were long-lost lovers. The hug went on for God only knows how long. Surprising to see Randhir being so nice to a person of the opposite gender, everyone thought. The hug finally broke when Sanyukta cleared her throat and Randhir was the one to break the hug. "Guys, this is Aarohi. She's a patient in the neighboring room. We've become good friends since I got shifted to this room. When Sanyukta isn't here, Aarohi and I talk to entertain ourselves," Randhir said to introduce her.
Aarohi muttered a sorry and said hi to everyone as Randhir took their names. Sanyukta felt there wasn't a single bit of genuineness in Aarohi's behavior towards anyone except Randhir. It was as if she was trying to be coquettish to seek attention only from him. Everyone gave Randhir looks that said they were mildly taken aback and surprised to see him behaving so well with a girl. He assured everyone that things were totally cool.
Just then, Sanyukta looked at her watch and said, "Guys, it's getting late. I think we should all go back to college. Let's make a move?"
Yo Yo said "Arrey Sanyukta! Abhi toh aaye hain. Thodi der ke baad jaenge, please." Oblivious to everyone, Sanyukta gave Yo Yo a look that scared the living daylights out of him. He immediately said "Actually mujhe ye saal pass hona hai, Randhir bhai. Toh hostel jaake padhna padega. Hum kabhi aur aake aapse milte hain. Bye - bye," he said and literally ran out of the room before Sanyukta could scare him any further.
Everyone else agreed and left the room too. Sanyukta was the last one to leave as she was talking about something to Randhir's father. As she was about to leave, Randhir came from behind, and held her hand as if to stop her. She turned around shocked.
"Randhir, you're walking! You're out of bed after two weeks!" she exclaimed. She was jumping like a child!
"Don't get too excited, Sanyukta. Aarohi helped me walk for the first time yesterday after you left," he said matter-of-factly. The hurt was evident on Sanyukta's face. "By the way, I stopped to ask you. No, actually tell you that if I'm not wrong, you were jealous when Aarohi came in," he teasingly said. She said with a straight face, "Are you stupid, Randhir? Why would I be jealous? Not like I'm your girlfriend." Her face was straight, but a tear was threatening to fall from her eye. Before it did fall, she wanted to leave. "Bye, Randhir. Take care," she said and left.
In his same mocking tone, he said, "I'm never wrong, Sanyukta." She continued to walk away from him without reacting.
