Part 4

In the night walking towards her room, Nikki took a bushy, less lit path and heard some commotion in the path; it seemed like an argument between two people.

Before she could stop herself she stumbled upon Abhi having an argument with a girl who was clinging to him , Abhimanyu said something to her and she left making a face . Abhimanu suddenly turned around and noticed her and was taken by surprise by her presence " ... tum yahaan kya kar rahi ho ..He shouted at her

"Dr Modi who was that girl ..." The words just unexpectedly escaped from her mouth ... Anger flashed in his eyes ... "what is it to you , why do you care who she is , mind your own business ... " he said and also left from there .

What was it to her , why did she care ? , why was she being so interested in his life ...? Cursing herself Nikki reached her room and sat on her bed , slowly some calm returned as she took deep breathes and tried to forget that incident ... Calmer now she took out her files when she heard a knock , she opened and Armaan barged in ...

"So finally you made an appearance Aarmaan ... let's start work on our presentation its due day after...

What are u doing ... Rummaging in my drawers ...Armaaan

"Arey nikki I am looking for a hairband ...I am going for an all night party at the beach , I wanna look cool .. You know I met this amazing girl ...

"Armaan ..You didn't let me work in Mumbai saying you'll help me when we get here and now ... it's so much work and you ..."

"Nikki don't be silly this girl is not only sexy but the daughter of a top surgeon ... if we get married I won't even need this job in the silly hospital ... u can visit me in my own clinic ...

Armaan ... I can't believe ...what about our hospitals reput...

Ok found it ...gota go Nikki , he opened the door and walked out

Nikki ran to the door shouting behind him ...Armaan

Abhi was passing by and their eyes clashed , he fixed his hot gaze on her ...

Why was he staring at her like this ... making her all hot and uncomfortable .. Who was he to judge her for anything ... what about his rendezvous with that hysterical girl ... and here he was judging her ... And why should he ...she turned away in huff and sat down on her bed facing away from him , expecting him to walk away from there . She was surprised as she heard him knock

Abhi knocked and took a tentative step inside her room " Is.. Everything okay.. ? "

But Nikki didn't turn back to look at him .

" So Armaan left you stranded when you needed him huh ? Not much of a trustable guy is he "

At such comments Nikki saw anger rise why was he always commenting on Armaan and demeaning her she stood up and faced him .

"Excuse me.. Why don't you also mind your own business.. Armaan isn't your responsibility..

Abhi reacted "oohh so is he your responsibility?
Nikki gave an incredulous look- what?? You know what .. She said pointing her finger at him "... I don't care what u think about me or Armaan
Abhi gave a humorless laugh- as if I really care enough to think about u or about arman for that matter.. I have much more imp thing to think about than that..
Nikki was now furious with rage and the words escaped her mouth before she could think "Well you should bother about the girl you were spending time with and leave us to our own business " Where the hell had that come from why was she so bothered about that scene she had just witnessed .

Abhimanyu walked closer to her and she took a step back .." What did you just say ..."

" Nothing " Nikki shivered under his gaze and tried to turn away from him. But he just continued to come closer till she hit the wall .

He walked closer and looked direct in her eyes and said . " I know your Armaan better than u do ..How long have u known him ...9 months - one yr.. ? He spent 4 yrs of internship and one yr of residency under me , I know him better ... " Time stops, something passes between them.. N swallowed and Abhi suddenly realized that the situation had gone awry and left ...

Alone in her room Nikki wondered why had she brought that girl in the conversation ? Why was the scene with the girl bothering her ??

For a long time she sat rehearsing the conversation ...there was some logic in what he had said ..He knew Armaan more than she did ... then she was shocked at her train of thoughts ...this guy would drive her mad ..NOW he was making her suspect her own friend.

Part 5 day 3 Why do you confuse me all the time

Next day Sujoy invited Nikki for beach ball he informed her that all oldies have gone to a high profile meeting. At the beach Nikki realises that Dr Modi must have also gone for that meeting as she has not seen him around , then she realises that she should not be thinking about his whearabouts ...gets to playing on the beach

"Nikki where is Arman ? " her friend asks her ...

" Sujoy we made a pact before we came here ..unless it was crtical life and death situation we wouldn't come in each others way here , sujoy cracked up hearing this but Nikki was not smiling , Nikki? He questioned , wringing her hands ..

"Ssujoy actually it is life and death now .. I I have a lot of work ... I ..."

Some noise distracts them and they look around ... The senior Doctors were returning from a meeting . Abhi returning from that meeting sees her ..hair flying in the wind bful shorts ... someone from the group ask him to join in , Nikki was also observing him from side of her eyes , he had seen her , would he still join the gang where she was .. even after the fights they had yesterday , he smiles and comes forward but suddenly his phone rings he leaves and Nikki was left wringing her hands.

In the afternoon Nikki was working on her presentation in a small conference room Abhi was passing by enquires " Dr Nikkita ..

I I was practigin the presentation ...

hum .. DR Armaan ? ...

She gulped , she didn't want to rant abt her friend but Abhi's question looked honest enough

Dr Modi , you know him better than me ..

Abhi said oh .

nikki feels nice , for once he was neutral .. she thought he will turn and leave , instead he stepped in ..

" May I ... " Nikki's eyes widened , I do this every day ... her eyes widened ' he was going to help her ?' , small surprise but who was she to let such an opportunity pass her by and she said a thankful yes.

They worked on the presentation .. Nikki soon relaxed and was happily chirping ,suddenly working she turned to see abhi was looking at her , she lifted her eyebrow questionin ? , He lifted his finger towards her face she blinked her eyes questioning, her heart racing

Dr Nikki , my pen can I have it back , she was chewing the pen .. she turned pink with embarrassment .

in the end he sat reading the paper and drinking tea and Nikki was giving final touches to her presentation , suddenly she stopped and noticed him , he had realy helped her out of a messy situation and he definitely deserved her gratitude.

she tries to thank him ...Dr. Modi .. I .. I ...

Abhi looked up at the sound of her voice but was distracted by the ring of his telephone .

Nikki's speech was broken in the middle , did she hear him mutter Sheena unher his breath ? Abdruptly he got up and left the room , leaving Nikki confused ...What was that ? Who was this Sheena .?

Nikki walked into dinner having changed and freshened up , her heart was humming a song . after some time she realised that he' was not present at dinner , again and again her eyes went to the entrance to see if he had entered unable to calm down and feeling totaly frustrated she left the dinning hall in search of him . She went all over the hotel , its various restaurants , the poolside ... terrace ...even up to her room ...she knew she was acting crazy but right now .. she cldnt stop herslef..once she sees him she would give up this crazy obsession ... but for now she had to find out where he was...

Part 6

DAY 4

When you kept your distance

It was the day of the presentation and she had woken up late , thanks to a very disturbed night she had last night , she had been on a wild goose chase and unable to find Abhi , even though why she was so bothered about him she could not fathom , she had gone into a frustrated sleep . Now pushing herself awake and up she rushed about to get ready

Abhi had woken up and gone for his regular jog , he was now showered and was ready as usual for another day of business .

Not exactly late for breakfast but just hasseled , Nikki frantically tried to make to the lift when she collided into someone coming from the opposite side , two strong arms steadied her.

" Itni jaldi mein kisse ladne jaa rahi ho Nikki "

" Armaan ... so you finaly decide to make an appearance ? "

Armaan only shrugged in response.

How was the party last night ?

Oh , I am making progress love ...

Hope it was worth stranding your friend with impossible work , dear friend .

All is fare in love and war Nikki and this is ... just a war to win her love.

This statement made no sense but Arman never made sense but somehow it was beyond her to get angry with him infact he had lightened up her mood. Even though Armaan was insensitive to the heart ache he cause girls and he was insenstivie to the trouble he got his friends into with his immaturety , he was not bad at heart he was just a kid who refused to grow up ... he had provided her emotional support when she had needed it the most and she was fond of the friendship they had , so what the hell she forgave him and she moved on ...

Shut up Armaan You make no sense now move , lets go down to breakfast...

Sorry to strand u up Dear Nikki , I am not up and about for breakfast , I am up from last morning and now I will head to my bunk for deep slumber ...

Oh what the hell she should have remembered the original pact stay out of each others way , yes that was a good plan .

Heading towards the lift to reach the breakfast room Abhi heard a commotion and as he turned a corner he saw Nikki with Armaan in the corridor . Armaan was holding her by her arms and they were lost in animated talk , something clenched inside him and he decided to turn , he would use the elevators on the other side of this building to head for breakfast now...

Nikki felt a familiar gaze on her face. She looked up straight.

Abhi shook his head and was about turn when his eyes locked with nikki's huge black eyes.. Nikki's heart jumped in excitement and she didn't understand why she felt so good to see him in the morning.. Abhi could swear he saw spark in her eyes and it unnerved his senses.. was she happy seeing him or Armaan?? He frowned..

Nikki noticed him frowning and it irked her.. was he unhappy to see her?? yes may be that was the reason he was about turn when she saw him watching her.. How rude and insufferable man.. she fumed..
'Nikki now stop fuming.. I said I am sorry about last night.. now give me a quick hug and call it truce' Arman spoke sweetly and before Nikki understands anytging he hugged her quickly..
Abhi's felt a pang at heart and his body turned tight with rage.. He didn't understand why he felt burning at heart.. He didn't like it what his body doing to him.. He clenched his fists and left from there taking a long strides..

Nikki saw him turn abruptly and his rigid posture.. she managed to move out of Arman's arms and Arman bid her quick goodbye and left.. she stood there motionless.. why was this man was giving her all kind of mixed signals?? She did noticecold rage on his face when arman hugged her unexpectedly.. What was she supposed to think or do now??

At the bereakfast table she had revived her earlier anxiety and felt almost certain he wouldnt be there ...but he was , smiling with a group of friends ... This guy was driving her mad ...where had he been last night ? She stood so close to where she was yet he didn't even acknowledge her. Could it be because of that girl Sheena ?

The presentation , she was doing it alone , infront of all these senior and distinguished doctors and her best friend' had disappeared on her again , he wouldn't help her in the presentation but he could have atleast TRIVALISED the occasion with his usual anti- authority attitude and helped her feel calm . Damn him , damn these people and ...

Abhi had just walked in ... why now , how ... but .. many questions arose but quietened down as he made his way to the front rows and sat down . She did not know how or why but his presence was calming and she flowed through the presentation with ease and even before she knew it it was over and now she was receiving every ones appreciation and answering individual questions. And then she felt a buzz in her ears as he walked close and congratulated her , she smiled in response and he moved away and the buzz died down and confusion clouded her being.This confusion was taken over by anger as damn him ... he was just ignoring her since the phone call yesterday !

She was explosive !

To cool off she decides to walk on the beach ... lost in her thought, she didnt realise when she walked away from the hotels private beach to the local area and suddenly found herself surrounded by big Russian looking hippies who were making some kind of weird remarks at her ...this was ridiculous shd she just ignore this and keep walking or shd she just turn and run this realy could not be serious , maybe they were just drunk and thought this was funny ? and then she heard her name being called out and it just got scarier, they knew her name and then she felt one of them get close and catch hold of her arm , yet the touch was soft and not intimidating , she heard her name again and it sounded familiar she looked up and saw him , like a miracle Abhimanyu had appeared besides her , she felt a deep relief which she could not show right now.

"Nikki you are walking in the wrong direction , the beach shack that i told u about is there ..." he said and pointed in the hotel's direction .. she lifted confused eyes to him ? what was he saying ?

" C'mon let's go now our friends are waiting for us there" he said as he pulled her in the direction back to the hotel , she understood now and followed his lead .

Right now she was so greatful to him to pull her out of this situation that she could ...

"What the hell were you thinking wandering away like that ...?" he thundered at her.

"But..." she didn't know why he was shouting at her , she would just apologise and maybe he would calm down

"What but you think this is a joke ? is that what life to you is ... I have not seen such irresponsible behaviour in my life ?

" I was not irresponsi..."

Why was he over doing this stuff she just could not understand why he was getting so angry ...

" I have seen you from day one not take anything serious in your life... that's why you are not going anywhere fast with this kind of behaviour and the company you keep "

Why the hell was he judging her because of the company she kept , she was not Armaan and he knew nothing about her competence as a Doctor or how she performed her duties but was always ridiculing her , this insult was just too much for now and she tried to get her arm free from his hold and head back to where she had wandered off .

" Where do you think you are going ?"

" Back to the hippies ... they seem a safer option right now ..." she said with irritation trying to turn back .

" Ridiculous ! you come with me ..." and saying this pulled her towards the hotel , a safe distance away from those Hippies he released her with a jerk

" Now stay here and next time please ask your super cool boyfriend to help you , I am here for work not to rescue careless girls ...:

He thought Armaan was her boy friend somehow that thought punctured the tension and cracked her up , she begins to laugh

Abhi gave her a confused stare , laughing now without a reason was she mad , no he was mad to ever come to the rescue of this girl or wasting his time helping her .. who had asked him to do that anyway .. talking of which why was he standing here .. trying to make sense out of her or out of his own irrational behaviour of spending his precious time on her ? he shook his head at her rolled his eyes and strode away from the place . He was done with all this for today .

In the Night Nikki delibratly acompnied Armaan to Dinner but Abhi didn't pay any heed to her..

All she had wanted was to thank him for his help and for saving her how had it spiralled out to this she could not understand ? He deliberately busied himself with other guests.. not giving her chance to thank him... annoyed Nikki didn't stop the glases of wine that she was being offered and gets drunk she finaly decided to leave the Hall its grouchy occupents or one particular grouchy occupant and catch some fresh air ... Out in the fresh air she got relief from the stuffiness and decided to wet her feet in the sea a bit . It tickled her feet when the sea retreated and her heels were maybe not the ideal footware for the beach but she was beyond caring right now , she was enjoying herself now finaly , she went in a little deeper and the retreating wave made her a little unsteady and she gave out a cry . A hand came out to steady her and she looked at him ... sadu ! first he infuriated her then came to help it was the same damn pattern over n over again . She shoved him off " stay away from me "

"Nikita please be careful this is not the right ..." he said catching her as she stumbled into his arms

In hsi arms she looked up into his face for a few second ... "Your trying to make me go mad naa , ?" She brought her face closer to him " You know what i'll confeses something to you ...somethinh happens in my heart ...thers a guy here ... he is making me go mad ... im going crazy abt him , brings her face still close to him ... It's not you ... no ...not you ."

Totaly affected by her proximity but being the saner one here , he tries to steady her on her feet . But she dsnt let go of his hand as he tries to move away and he jerks back into her.

"... Do u think he will like me too ... am I bful enough ...? "

She continues looking into his eyes

" I think I am and he will go crazy for me , I can make any man crazy for me , but my stupid heart ... dsnt listen to me .. tell it not to hurt bcause of him but it does ...Always seeking that idiot out ... that mad crazy sadu ... Moody ... He is moody too ..just like u ...do u think he will like me ?"

Abhi : yes

Wat if he dsnt ..

Abhi : "He will ! "

"I think so too , I can make any guy like me .." saying this she slams into him and lifts her face to him "...now kiss me , you said any guy will like me ...so show me ...how ... "

Abhi tries hard to control his weywrd thoughts.. She faints in his arms..

he takes her to her room..
He tucked her under cover and she murmured inaudibly.. Abhi couldn't resist temptation of brushing silky lock of her hair off her eyes.. for a moment his fingers lingered there.. all past blissful encounters flashed before his eyes.. His lips curved upward as he remembered how she asked to kiss him few minutes ago.. His thumb brushed her cheek on its own accord.. and nikki lips widened blissfully and she caught his palm and tucked it below her cheek and hmmed sleepily.. Abhi's breath caught in his throat momentarily.. and he relaxed in the next moment.. shaking his head he bent and kissed her silky hair murmured 'you can make any man lose his sanity miss malhotra..' He spoke with his dimpled smile..
