Chapter 4

After completing all the rituals, soon the bride and groom found themselves alone at their home. All relatives had gone teasing them about their suhagraat, while Sakshi hadnt even thought about this aspect of marriage at all when she agreed to marry him.

She was seriously going crazy, she thought while she was taking a shower, how could she forget about the suhagraat. She knew that if Arjun wanted her to carry on with it, she couldn't refuse, atleast that's what her mum had told her. But deep down, she knew she wasn't ready at all for taking that step. She wondered what Arjun will do and say.

After a few minutes, she came out wearing a pyjama set, which completely covered her, from top to her feet. She hoped Arjun would get the hint she was throwing at him. And like she wanted, one look at her clothes, Arjun couldn't stop himself from smiling. His bride, his wife... Well he knew from the very start that things would take a long time where Sakshi was concerned. And given his love for her, he had already decided to wait as long as needed.

He went to his cupboard, took out his clothes and made to go out of the room. Sakshi had been observing him and couldn't understand what he was doing.

Before he could leave, Sakshi stopped him asking where he was going.

Arjun turned to watch his wife and said, "Sakshi I know very well under what circumstances we got married, and trust me I'm not going to force anything on you. You can stay in this room, while I'll stay in the guest room." He watched her expressions, seeing relief mainly on her face.

"Good night," he said and turned to leave.

"Ruko!" Sakshi shouted. Now that she knew Arjun had no intention of asking anything from her, she was at peace and relieved.

"Arjun, why did you marry me?" she asked, "I mean I know why I married you, but why did you marry me? What do you get out of this?"

Arjun had been wondering if Sakshi would ever ask him this. People no longer married just because of reputation nowadays, at least he wasn't like that.

"And why did you marry me?" Arjun asked back.

Sakshi was shocked hearing this question, after all everyone knew why she had married him.

"You know why I married you," Sakshi replied confused.

"Nahin I know the situations which led to our marriage, but why did you accept?" Arjun asked.

Seeing Sakshi lost for words, Arjun added, "Had there been another guy in my place, would you have accepted?"

"Of course not!" Sakshi shouted.

"Then why me?" Arjun asked.

"Because I know you well, because you are my friend," Sakshi replied after some time.

She noticed a sad emotion on Arjun's face, which was easily replaced by an indifferent attitude.

"Good night Sakshi," Arjun said and turned to go.

"Wait," Sakshi shouted again.

"Kya hein?" Arjun asked without turning to look at her.

"You don't need to go," Sakshi said innocently, this time making Arjun turn to look at her with puzzled eyes.

"I know everything is awkward, indeed for me it's all strange. But if on the start itself we put distance between us, what will happen?" Sakshi asked.

Arjun was now completely shocked, and was watching at her in a strange way.

"Of course I don't mean that we need to... I mean we don't have to.." Sakshi started to stammer, but " you know what I mean right!"

But Arjun nodded in a negative way.

She took a deep breath, and decided to make things clearer before she made a mess out of everything.

"I mean that we can both stay in this room, I'll take the couch, and you can take the bed," Sakshi finished.

Sakshi was starting to shock Arjun a lot now, he had thought she would be happy to be alone, but she was reacting more maturely than he had hoped.

"Are you sure?" Arjun asked her.

"Well yes, I agree our marriage is strange, but for me marriage is for a lifetime, and I'm gonna give my best. Have patience on me, I'm not perfect, but I promise to give you all happiness," she replied.

Arjun was happy, for a start, it was indeed a positive one. He strode towards her with a big smile, and before she could retreat, he took her in his arms for a hug.

But before she could also respond, he had released her and went to sleep on the bed.

She walked to the couch, and settled herself in it.

"Arjun..." she said in a low voice.

"Hmmm," Arjun replied back.

"Any other person would have fought to give the lady the bed," Sakshi said jokingly.

"Maybe I'm not a gentleman," Arjun said back.

"Rubbish, you are the most humble and generous man I know," Sakshi said.

Arjun froze upon hearing this, he wondered what she'd do when she came to know the truth he has been hiding.

This pattern followed for the following days. During the day, Arjun was at its most charming, gifting her flowers, jewellery or any other things each day, while at night they would go to sleep after chatting like good friends.

Sakshi's feelings towards Arjun was mellowing each day, she wasn't indifferent to any of his gestures. And if she was truthful, she'd accept that Arjun was trying his best to woo her.

It was very sweet, courting after marriage.

But her only issue was that she had loved Rohit, it may seemed very far now, but she wasn't sure if her love was still here or not.

She wanted to go to Arjun after erasing Rohit completely from her life. And on the other side, though Arjun was courting her, she wasn't sure of his feelings towards her.

Was everything only a big compromise? Or did he care for her?

After one month of marriage, she realized one night that Arjun had never answered her first question on why he had married her. She decided to have her answer tonight, and went to find him in the TV room. Just as she was approaching, she heard Arjun talking with someone on the phone. She decided to talk to him afterwards and was going to her room, when the next words from Arjun's mouth caught her attention.

"Of course I still love her. True love doesn't die that easily!" Arjun was saying on the phone.

"I had no choice, I never realized she would take this so badly," Arjun kept explaining.

Sakshi was shattered after hearing this. What a mess their life was? They both loved people who were no longer accessible to them now.

She retreated quietly before Arjun could see her.

What should she do now? She realized that maybe she had forced Arjun into marrying her after her outbursts. Had she trapped him? She wondered why she felt hurt knowing he loved someone else!
