Part 11
Secrets…
It was 4:00am. It was a very cold and windy day. It really wasn't wise at all for driving. Very few dared to go out that day, let alone drive un state. But our kids were different, they were special…they dared to do anything.
So they put their bags in Raj's MDX, and were ready to go. They were supposed to go that afternoon, but the whether report said that by afternoon, the roads would be blacked, so it was better they left in the morning. Everyone was sleepy, and they weren't too sure about Raj being able to drive that early.
R- Don't worry guys, Im not sleepy.
K- Are you sure?
R- Yeah Im fine. I just need my expesso and Im good for about 5 hours.
S- Ok, then after you I'll drive
M- Guys, its freezing lets go in the car
K- Yeah
V- Where's Angad?
K- He's in Dunkin Dounuts, were gonna pick him up
V- Oh, ok.
S- So lets go.
They all got in the car. They picked up Angad and Raj hit for the highway. In the front it was Raj and Shazad. In the middle row it was Kripa and Angad. In the Back row it was Vedika and Meem. Everyone excpet Raj, and Kripa fell asleep.
R- So you excited?
K- Yeah, it's gonna be fun, just us 6.
R- Six…yeah, I was thinking more of us two.
K- Raj
Kripa hit Raj on his shoulder.
R- Ok fine…us six (making a face)
K- So where are we staying
R- Well, Vedika checked them out. She got really cheap rates at Days Inn. So where all staying there.
K- how many room.
R- That Shazad knows I don't.
K- Ok
R- Why my love, how many rooms do you want.
K- Im thinking two is good
R- Two?
K- Yeah, the guys in one and the girls in the other.
R- Oh…..right…us six ( making another face)
Raj took Kripa's hand, kept it close to him face and drove. About 2 hours later, everyone woke up. Now Raj had music playing. He was playing "Kya Mujhe Pyar Hai". They stopped to eat at Mc. Donalds around 9. Then Shazad took the driving seat. Angad was next to him. Raj was behing next to Kripa.
Around about 2:00pm everyone was energized. Now the music was loud and everyone was talking and laughing.
K- Hey Shazad, how many rooms did we get?
S- Oh I think we got two.
V- Yeah, we booked two rooms next to each other.
A- So what are we gonna do once we get there.
M- Yeah, where are we going from there
S- Well, Im thinking today we just rest up, maybe get a good dinner, get a good night sleep and then tomorrow we head for skiing in the mountains.
M- How many days we are gonna be here?
R- I think about 3 days.
M- Cool
S- Yeah, we were planning on the whole week, but I think we'd be a exhausted..
V- And there exams coming up, so we should study
K- I know, I hate Mid- Terms
S- You know, one of you girls should do the teacher then he'd give you a straight A
R- Yeah…as long as its not Kripa I mean.
A- He wouldn't give a straight A, he'd give a straight something else.
Everyone laughed. Soon they reached Days Inn. Angad and Vedika went to get the keys while everyone else took out the bags. Vedika showed the lady at the counter their booking number. She checked the computer
Lady- Oh, Im so sorry. We had a booking mix up with another group. We booked you with one room
A- What
V- Ok, well can you book us another room right now?
Lady- Well not righ tnow, but a room will be empty tomorrow morning, if you cant wait until then…since your booked for three days.
A- Um…can you hold that thought for a minue. I have to talk to my friends
Lady- Ok.
A- Thanks
Angad and Vedika went and talked to the rest of the group, they all agreed. The motel gave them a free stay that night, so it was kind of ok. They all went in the room. It was pretty big.
M- Thank god we have those blankets and pillows.
S- Oh yeah! Good thinking. I'll go get them from the car.
A- And, their bringing a extra cot too.
V- Ok, so lets just try to make this work.
R- Don't worry its gonna be fun.
K- Yeah, it'll be like a slumber party.
They all settled in. They went to the bathroom for showers. First Kripa went.
R- KRIPA!!!! CAN YOU COME OUT NOW
K- WAIT
R- BUT I HAVE TO…
K-SHUT UP!
S- WHY DO GIRLS TAKE SO LONG IN BATHROOMS
V- (laughing) UMMMM
M- (laughing) BECAUSE…
Angad went to Shazad and patted his back.
A- Its ok baacha, you'll fine out some day
S- Forget I asked
Kripa came out.
R- Finally, were you making a house in there?
K- Raj….
R- Yes I know, "shut up"
Raj came out and Angad went in. Angad was almost don't. So he opened the door so Raj could get his watch. Raj after took his watch, Angad forgot to lock the door. Vedika went in the bathroom, she thought Anagd came out. Vedika opened the door and screamed, hearing Vedika scream Anagd screamed.
V- Im sorry
A- Its ok…calm down
Angad is in a towel. He looked good in a towel.
A- I'll be done in a minute
V- Ok
A- Sorry I took long
V- Its fine, just lock the door next time
A- No it because Raj had to get something, and I forgot too….anyway
V- You should change into clothes now
A- Yeah
SILENCE
A- Vedika?
V- Hm
A- I cant change until you leave
V- Oh Im sorry…(laughing)****.
A- (laughing) Its fine
Vedika left and closed the door. Anagd came out and Vedika went in. Then after her it was Meem. Meem was done fast, she came out and Shazad was about to go in
M- Shazad wait don't go in yet
Shazad didn't hear her and went in.
S- Oh my god!!!!
He ran out, and put his hands over his eyes.
M- I told you not to go in
S- Get it out!!!
M-Ok calm out. Your acting like you never saw it before.
Meem went in and got her "clothes" out. (clothes…wink wink)
S- Oh burn my eyes!
Everyone was laughing. Meem was cracking up.
R- Bro next time, listen to her!
S- Please eye burn my eyes!!!!
Meem was laughing, she went and hugged Shazad like he was some kind of a innocent little baby.
M- You can go in now
S- Im afraid to
A- Aw you want someone to give you a shower
S- no, fine im going
Shazad ran in the bathroom, and everyone else else laughed. After getting dressed, which the girls took a very long time to do.
S- Now I now why you all look so good. Its like a 5 step process. "Eyeliner, Mascara, Lip gloss, eye shadow, and face powder.
V- Ok lets go, Im starved!
They had a really nice dinner and a lot of fun. Then It was time for bed. But no one was sleepy. They all sat near the fire place and talked. That maybe was the first time they all got close. Not as lovers or anything, just as friends. All 6 of them. So close, that they could tell each other anything…
R- I went to jail once
A- Wow
M- That was random
K- How?
S- You never told me
V- What did you do?
R- I think it was about 6 months afer my mom died. I was mad drunk that day. I remember, I was 16. My dad…he was thinking about getting married again. It was only 6 months since my mom died…six months.
You could see the pain in Raj's eye's. The anger, anguish, emptiness…you could see everything. Slowly Kripa went and held Raj's hand and looked at him with comforting eyes. Without saying anything, she told him that she was there for him, now and always.
R- My dad was sleeping, and I came home. I went to his bedroom and stared at him. He killed my mother…and he had the nerve to think about getting married again? I hated him…well I still do. I took out my gun and held it at his head. He woke up and pushed me away. I missed his head but I still shot him. On his shoulder.
S- That's why he cant moves his right shoulder that good
R- Yeah…So, the neighbors heard the gun shot and called the police. I was tooken to jail and my dad to the hospital. Later of course, my dad got me out.
A- You hated him that much?
R- (laughing) So much more…
K- Raj.
R- I know…but I don't care.
Vedika started laughing lightly.
R- Whats so funny?
V- Nothing, I just find it strange that someone could hate their own father that much.
S- Not everone has a happy fun filled family.
V- You think I do?
M- Don't you?
V- My dad is dead
A - What?
K- Im so sorry
V- It sok. Yeah, my dad died..well actually, he got killed
A- By who?
V- I don't know. See, my dad was in India. He was a journalist He testified in court against these people. Then some days later, their was a bombing in the work place, and he died.
M- oh my god.
R- What about your mom and you?
V- I was only 1 year old that time. The government said it wasn't safe for my mom and me to live there, so we came here, to America.
There were light tears falling from Vedikas eyes. This was something Vedika never talked about, never thought about. It scared her. To think that maybe even today they were after her and her mother. Scared that maybe someday, they'd come for her…what about her kids, would they be in danger too? All these thoughts made Vedika's head spin, so she just didn't think or talk about it.
S- That's harsh. I don't think anything that harsh ever happened to me.
M- Why do you hate your father so much
S (laughing)- Well…actually, its something you guys don't know about
K- What?
S- When I was about 13, my dad had an affair with some lady
R- Really?
S- Yeah…we all found out. But My mother being how sh eis, thought about me an dhow I need a father and mother, so she accepted it and "forgave" him.
V- But she never really forgot it, did she?
S- I don't know, but I make sure my dad doesn't forget it. That where my whole, me being some other guys son bit came from. I convince my dad that he wasn't the only one who cheated, so did my mom. Hence reminding him of what he did…making his life worse. Its pretty fun.
M- Your funny. But you know, your all still lucky.
A- Don't tellme you have a story too.
R- No, isn't your life all perfect.
M- Yeah, it is. As close to perfect as life can get. I love my parents and they love me.
V- Thast good.
M- But sometimes I wonder, would I love my realy parents as much?
S- Real parents?
M- Yeah. Im adopted.
K- Really?
M- Yes. There nothing wrong with it. My uncle and aunt adopted me. My mom, "real" mom I mean. She was pregnant with me before she was married. My "real" dad didn't want me or my mom. He left. My mom dicided to give birth to me, but she died during child birht. So my "mama" and "mami" adopted me.
R- They told you everything
M- No, my "nani" did. Before she died.
V- Meem, Im so sorry.
M- Its fine. Im happy with my life and my parents.
Meem really wasn't sad with her life. She was happy. But she always felt as if her mothers past was holding her down. She didn't want to make the mistake her mother made. And that wasn't it. She didn't was to disappoint her parents. She always felt indebted to them, for all they did for her.
K- That's good. Atleast you have a family that cares. Mines…they don't care about me at all.
M- Im sure they
K- no…they used to. They cared about me a lot until last June.
R- What happened in June
K- the car accident.
A- What car accident.
K- My brother Jai and I were in the car. He was kinda teaching me how to drive. My brother, I love him so much. We always had a lot of fun together. He was my best friend.
V- What happened?
K- Well, I was driving, and I thik I drove a little to fast. I confused the gas for the breaks. We hit another car and our car flipped over. Next thing I know were in the hospital with my mother crying and my dad talking to the doctor. I was ok. I had a a few broken bones and cuts. But nothing compared to my brother.
S- What happened him Jai? I thought he went to London
K- He did…for treatment. All of his left side got paralyzed. (crying). Because of me.
Raj held Kripa close to him.
K- I guess my parents never forgave me for that.
R- Its ok.
Raj hugged Kripa tight. Kripa didn't know if her parents forgave her or not. But she knew that she was never able to forgive herself. In a way, she hated her self. Why did she insist on Jai teaching her how to drive? Why didn't she know the difference between the brakes and the gas. Why was it him and not her who got paralyzed. Why didn't her parents ever hold her the way Raj was ans tell her that it wasn't her fault? Why did their eyes keep blaming her for what happened? Why…
K- Im ok…(laughing)
S- So….Angad
A- Yeah?
R- What about you
M- Yeah, dotn you have some deep dark secret your gonna share
A- If I wanted to share it, it wouldn't have been a secret
K- Anagd, come on…remember no secrets
A- I have no secrets. My parents are dead, I live with my aunt whos engaged to Mr. Das. You guys know it all. See no secrets
V- Anagd…please (cute face)
A- Ok…I have one
S- Great
M- Tell Tell!
A- I …
K- Go on!
A- Ok
R- Dude hurry up
A- I sleep with a teddy bear
K- What? (laughing)
Everyone started laughing.
A- Yaar, I really sleepy. Look its 3 am.
S- oh yeah, guys lets go to bed.
M- Yeah Im tired too.
V- Ok, I'll make the beds on the floor.
K- I'll help.
They made the beds and fell asleep. Everyone except Angad. He laid on the flor thinking
What if he told them the truth? Everyone had a story today, would it was made a difference if he told his too? Yes it would…because in a way, everything that happened to them was htier past. But Angads secret…it wasn't the past, it's the present, the future…his life. His secret is his life. Something he refused to share…he wasn't afraid of it…or was he?
