Love Will Find A Way
Arnav shut his eyes as he listened to the rain. He was tired from a long day's work. He just listened with his eyes closed. It gave him satisfaction. There was a sense of calmness and it extinguished his anxiety. It also stopped his racing heart. It had been a 3 years. He still hadn't forgotten her face, it had become a little faded but he remembered. He wasn't a believer in love but something about her had just hooked him and he still waited to hear her slow husky voice. She had barely spoken to him but whatever she had said still echoed in his mind. Her eyes were always filled with terror. Her hair beautifully left open. Her lips coated with gloss eager to say so much but saying nothing. Her fingers entwined in her duppatta. He remembered everything. Her fear, her anxiety, some of it was so vividly fixed in his mind. Three years was a long time. He was over her, yet he hadn't forgotten her completely.
It was going to be a long day tomorrow. Arnav had to fly to London. It would be another business trip with tenders and orders. Boring. Arnav needed something new and exciting in his boring life. He had formed a routine and nothing out of the ordinary happened in his life. He couldn't sleep for some reason he didn't understand. He lay in bed summing up his life- all the success, achievements, everything seemed minimal in front of the lost love. He wondered where she would be, how she would be. He didn't even know if she was alive. He hadn't understood her decision of staying with her husband but he would know soon enough.
*
London. Arnav had taken a taxi at 9:00 am. He had a meeting in five minutes with a multinational company. He was running late already. In the next five minutes the taxi driver stopped the car in front of a tall building. Arnav got down and rushed into the elevator. He checked his time. 2 minutes late. He was going to meet the managing partner. He checked his watch as the receptionist led him to the conference room.
"Good morning Mr. Raizada," a stout man said. He got up and shook hands with Arnav. "Good morning, Mr.--"Menon." He introduced. "Would you like tea or coffee?"
"Nothing. Let us start."
"Alright." He said calling his secretary.
"Hey devi maiya!" came the voice Arnav just couldn't forget. He turned around immediately. There she was crouching on the floor picking up all the files, which had fallen from her hand. She hadn't changed one bit. She still wore a salwar suit with the dupatta. She still looked tensed and worried. Arnav's lips grew into a smile and before he knew it he was staring.
Khushi looked up to greet the new client only to see him standing in front of her. Her heartbeat fastened and she suddenly became nervous. She didn't understand it but she always became nervous looking at him. There was something about him that attracted her and she had to run away before she could just drown in his eyes again. "Good morning gentlemen!" she spoke in perfect English. Arnav just stared at her in awe. Their eyes met and they shared a small eye-lock where there were so many questions and no answers.
"Sir, Madam told me to give you the files. She said you needed them." She said keeping the files on the table. She could still feel Arnav's eyes on her. She didn't look at him again. She didn't want to be caught by her boss. "Tell Amanda, she is my secretary and when I call her she should be here!" he shouted. Khushi listened and left the room.
Arnav Singh Raizada, Khushi thought, after 3 long years. I still remember that night. After so many years I had smiled. He had made me feel special. He had made me feel good. That's why I felt like running away. I couldn't get used to the happiness that I wouldn't get later on. I had to move away from him. Whenever he touched me my heartbeat fastened and I just couldn't breathe. It was like the Earth stopped rotating. His voice went straight to the heart and when he asked me to come with him my heart skipped a beat. I couldn't think straight. I remember. I was just about to say yes when I remembered my deal with Laurent. I couldn't leave him. The deal was money in return of me. I had sold myself to him and I had to keep my end of the bargain. Even if that meant not being able to see the only man who had looked at me with love and respect, even if that meant staying with Laurent all my life. I wanted to go with Arnav. Anyway, what's the point now? Everything has changed. Circumstances are different. He is probably married now. Khushi said pushing the thoughts out of her mind. There was no point in thinking about things from the past. Her life had changed drastically.
The meeting was one hour long but Arnav just couldn't get over the fact that he had seen her again. There were so many questions in his mind. He couldn't comprehend his own thoughts. He had barely paid attention in the meeting. It got over in about an hour and Arnav walked up to the receptionist and asked for Khushi. The receptionist called Khushi's cubicle and called her out saying she had a visitor.
Khushi never had visitors. When she came outside she saw him. She stopped rooted to where she stood. Her heartbeat increased instantly and her fingers entwined themselves in her dupatta. Arnav smiled seeing that. "Hi," he said softly. Khushi smiled a little, "Hi."
"How are you?" he asked.
She looked up into his eyes and she could see warmth in them. "I'm fine." She replied.
"Nahi. Tum hindi mein baat karti hui zyada achhi lagti ho!" he said softly walking closer to her.
"Sir," she gasped looking around. She took a step back. She was nervous. She worked here and if someone saw her with ASR then it wouldn't end well for her.
Arnav stopped seeing her flutter.
"What's the matter?" he asked.
"Kya hum office ke bahar --baat kar-- sakte hai?" she asked hesitantly.
"Oh! Are you asking me out Ms. -I mean Mrs.--"Nahi. It's Ms. Khushi Gupta." She said confidently. "Aur nahi. Main aapko-- mere saath--umm--
She stopped. What would she say? She was still nervous in front of him. Arnav crossed his arms over his chest. This would be fun.
"You haven't changed one bit." Arnav said with a smile. He loved teasing her.
She looked at him with narrowed eyes. "Main woh purani Khushi nahi hoon." She said confidently.
"Achha?" Arnav asked coming closer.
"Mr. Raizada, please, yaha nahi." She said moving back.
"Achha. Toh aaj dinner pe mein tumhare ghar aa raha hoon. Ye raha mera card. Address message kar dena." He said with a grin.
Before she could say something he left.
Khushi was in a fix. Should she call him to her home? She barely even knew him. But her heart had no bounds. It was flying. She smiled to herself but then tried to push away all the thoughts coming into her mind. She would decide later. All she could think of was that Arnav remembered her!
Arnav went to his hotel and cancelled his ticket back to Mumbai. He would stay. He wanted to. She had said she was Miss. Khushi Gupta again. He had a chance. He still did. He wanted to know her, to understand her better. To get a chance at love.
He waited for her to text. He didn't know if she would, he just had hope. He kept looking at his cellphone. It was 2 p.m. and still no text. Arnav was starting to doubt whether she would text. He waited. 3 p.m., 4 p.m., and finally at 5:30 he was going to call and get his ticket for the following morning when she texted.
31st street. Block O5. Roger Apartments. 7th Floor. Dinner at 8:30?
Arnav smiled.
Sure. I'll be there. He sent.
Great!
Arnav was very excited. He spent the next two hours dressing up. He looked hot. He wanted her to like him. He wanted her to fall for him. He just wanted to be with her. He took a long time to choose the right, apt, perfect outfit. When he finally did, it was the suit he had worn that day. Same thing. Surprisingly, he had packed it. He hadn't even realised.
8:29 p.m. he knocked on Khushi's door. The building wasn't very poshe. It was good. It was decent. She opened the door. She was still in her salwar only her hear tied up in a ponytail.
"Hi!" she said smiling a little.
"Hi," he said. He knew he had to make an impression if he was to get the girl. She knew she had to control otherwise things would go all wrong!
"Come on in," she said.
They sat in her living room. Arnav looked around. It was very homely. Not too luxurious, just homely. Simple. Just like Khushi.
"What are you doing here?" Arnav asked Khushi.
"We moved here, 2 years ago, Laurent and I." she said.
"Where is Laurent?"
"He passed away. His liver failed. Alcohol." She said looking away.
"Oh."
"What are you doing here?" Khushi asked.
"I came for a business deal!" he said.
"No, I mean here." She said a little more confident.
"Khushi," he said leaning forward, resting his elbows on his thighs. "You know I care about you. I did then and I did now. The question is, you rejected me then, and now?" he said coming straight to the point. He didn't waste time in small talk. He had already lost the love, what was the harm?
Khushi looked down. She didn't have an answer to his question.
"Arnav you don't want to." She said.
"I know that better than you."
"What do you even know about me?" she asked. This was so random and so wrong.
"I know enough. I know you want to tell me something but you won't. I know you know English and yet prefer to speak in hindi. I know you are nervous around me, I know you are different, I know--"nothing! You know nothing!" Khushi said shaking her head.
Arnav narrowed his eyes, leaned closer and placed his hand on hers. "So tell me!" he said.
"Arnav, we have no future!"
"We have. You just don't want to see it. If you don't want to have future with me, you just need to say the word. No hard fee--"No. It's not that!" she said immediately.
Arnav's eyes widened. She likes me? He thought. Life was short and decisions had to be made.
"So what?" he asked.
He knew he was being pushy. He knew she wanted to take it slow but he just couldn't wait. He wouldn't be able to see her everyday and he didn't know for how long he could stay in London. This would be difficult.
"Khushi, I know you need time. I know you see to think, this is your life and after so many years you've finally got your freedom back. Don't make rash decisions, think about it."
"Arnav, I wanted to say yes."
"What?"
"That day? I wanted to say yes. I was going to say yes." She said.
"What? Why didn't you?" he asked.
"I had made a deal. And plus, you deserved better. You didn't--"You do not get to decide what I deserve! NEVER do that. You broke my heart that day. You did."
"I am sorry." She said.
"So what has changed? Why can't you say yes now?"
"Arnav I--
*A child crying*
Khushi got up. "That." She said leaving the living room.
*
Khushi held her child in her hands. It was a girl. She looked beautiful. She had jet-black hair and beautiful eyes. Khushi kissed her daughter on her forehead and held her small fragile hands.
Arnav walked in behind her. His face still blank and his eyes still widened. He was still in shock. He hadn't known that she had a daughter. He looked at her. She had Khushi's eyes. She looked so innocent, so small. She must be maximum 2 years old.
"Now you know everything." She whispered putting the baby back to sleep.
Arnav was silent. He needed time now. He had no experience of love, relationship, and now a father? That was a big, huge, gigantic step.
"Let's have dinner," Khushi smiled looking at his face.
*
"I know you weren't prepared for more baggage." Khushi said.
"Please. Don't call her baggage, she's your daughter."
"She's my daughter, she's my life. But for you she--"No. No. I wasn't thinking about that. It's just that I am not at all ready to--"I understand." She said serving the food.
"I hope you like Chinese."
Arnav smiled.
Dinner was quiet though her presence made it very soothing. Arnav could spend his whole life like this. Just sitting there. He looked at her eat. She looked so beautiful. His mind started to fight his heart but his heart was stronger than ever. Just one try. You love her! His heart told him. This is madness. Love is for stupid people Arnav. You are attracted to her. It's just that. Don't! His mind argued. You love her. You didn't forget her in three years! What more do you want? His heart said.
Arnav tried to concentrate on the food. He wondered what Khushi was thinking about.
He won't say yes. Khushi's mind told her. Why will he? Pooja isn't his daughter, she is mine. Khushi said. If he says yes? Then what? Am I ready to spend my life with him? I met him three years ago! And just in our second meeting how can I decide whether he's right for me? Forget about me, what about Pooja? Is he right to be a father?
Dinner was over.
Khushi walked Arnav to the door.
"Khushi I--"Arnav please. I know this isn't what you were prepared for. I don't come alone. Don't make rash decisions." She said. Arnav stepped closer and hugged her. He just did. He didn't know why, he didn't know how. He stepped up and did it. She was shocked too. He held her tightly in his arms and hid his face in her shoulder.
"Arnav," Khushi whispered. She didn't know if she could control any longer. It was getting to intimate.
"Shh" he whispered.
They stood there, just like that, holding onto each other. Against all odds. Finding their way. Arnav felt like he had just reached heaven. He wanted nothing else but to hold her forever in his arms. He was happy. He was happy after years. His heart was beating loudly in his chest and everything was blurred. Nothing was certain, it all just seemed so right. It was all so soothing that the two just couldn't move.
Khushi pulled away slowly, looking down.
Arnav looked at her. He held her hands in his. "I don't know what love is. I have never fallen for someone so helplessly before. Khushi, you make me want to live, you make my heart beat fasten, you make me happy." He said.
Khushi looked up at him. What had she done to receive such love, respect, and affection?
"Love is an alien concept. I don't know anything about it. But I know I want to spend me life with you. I don't know much about you but I want to know everything, to the last detail. I don't eve know if you feel the same way but I just can't stay away now. Not after destiny brought us together a second time. I will love your daughter more than you do. I will give her every happiness in this world!" he said.
Khushi was silent. She really didn't know how to react.
"Arnav, think about it please. Don't just say all this. You don't have to if-- I have no idea how to put it right but-- It's just that-- I know this is happening fast-- you have to be sure--sure sure." She said.
"Khushi, will you let me be the father of your daughter? Can she be our daughter? Please. In life, this is probably the surest decision I have made." He said. After every word he spoke his confidence rose. So did hers. Life was short. Things changed really fast. Millions of questions were in her mind, would it last? Is this the correct choice? Am I being selfish? Is this right? Is it happening to fast? Should I tell him no? How much do I even know him?
But against all those questions she said, "Yes."
Arnav took her in his arms once again. Both of them were unsure but they found strength in each other. They found comfort in one another, they were both suffering, alone, sad. They completed each other. They didn't know where life was taking them. They didn't know if what they did that night was right, all they knew was that they were in love and love always finds it's way. With that in mind Arnav leaned in and kissed her. Just like that.
