Her heart started accelerating, not willing to stop.
Something had happened. She knew it, she could feel it. It was as if her entire world was crumbling into pieces. She was afraid, tempted to run away, away from it all. She needed him. She needed to be in his embrace to shut off all the pain bubbling inside of her.
She clutched her dupatta tightly, sweat beads forming across her forehead. She tried picking up a glass of water, but her shaking hands gave way letting the glass fall to the floor.
The cringing, crinkling noise of glass engulfed the atmosphere, it almost symbolized her life.
What was going on…? Why wasn't this nagging feeling going away…?
Was…Was he alright..? She had a gut feeling that something terrible had happened. And it involved him…her love…her everything.
She needed to see him…hear his voice…run her hands across his chest, assure herself that he was not going to give up.
She could not imagine a life without him.
If there was no Arnav…there was no Khushi.
Just as she was about to get up, her phone started buzzing loudly.
It was the hospital calling.
With shivering hands, she picked up the phone, placing it near her ear and answering it cautiously.
"Mrs. Raizada…?"
"Y..Yes…?" she replied, almost breaking down completely.
"Your husband met with an accident down Golf's lane. He is very critical as of now. We assure you we will do our best to save him. You need to be here as soon as possible."
"Mrs.Raizada..? Hello..? Are you there..?"
As Khushi ran towards the car, alerting the driver to take her to the hospital. She prayed with all her heart hoping her husband was fine.
She couldn't. She couldn't live without him.
Her heart would stop beating the day he ceases to exist. Without him…there's no meaning to life.
"Arnav…don't leave me…" she whispered glancing out towards the dark, rainy day.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"We can't find his pulse doctor! What should we do…?" the assistant yelled out towards the doctor who was frantically checking Arnav's heart beat.
"Oh my god...doctor! Doctor..we're losing him!..."
"No! We can't! Do all that you can! Have you cleaned up his wound..? Check his pulse again dammit!"
"We.Cannot.Afford.To.Lose.Him. Do I make myself clear..?!"
"But Sir…He isn't..he isn't breathing."
"I don't care dammit! Just do what I say! FIND HIS PULSE!"
~~~~~~~
Khushi ran into the hospital, tears soaking her cheek.
She dialed her home number, alerting the family members about Arnav's accident.
She rushed towards the ICU dorm, pressing herself against the door to get a better view
The red light was still on, indicating that the surgery was still going on.
A nurse walked out of the room, carrying a tray full of bloodied cotton.
Khushi ran towards her asking her about her husband.
"Are you Khushi…?" the nurse asked her.
She nodded frantically.
"Mr.Raizada was taking your name all throughout the drive to the hospital…."
Khushi smiled tearfully.
"Don't worry Mrs.Raizada…We're doing all we can..."
With that, the nurse walked away letting Khushi curl up into a ball beside the dorm, clutching her dupatta while rubbing her hands across her tear stricken face.
Her husband…Her love…her everything was fighting for his life inside that room. What was she supposed to do without him…?
Khushi was a firm believer of her God. If anything happened to Arnav today…she would lose all her faith in the almighty. She would cease to exist without him.
Her mother rushed towards her side, engulfing Khushi into a warm hug.
But Khushi was frozen. She wouldn't move, wouldn't talk.
She was lost without him. Lost without her love.
Then suddenly, the twinkling red light went off above her alerting the crowd outside that the surgery was complete.
As if thrusting blood into her body, Khushi stood up looking frantically towards the door as the doctor walked out looking as tired as ever.
He took one good look at Khushi and smiled warmly. He walked towards her and nodded positively.
"We saved him..We saved your husband Mrs.Raizada. It was truly a miracle but he was a warrior in there. I guess he could not wait to come back to you…"
Khushi for the first time in her life, let her tears fall graciously down her cheek, wetting her face. She smiled painfully looking towards her mother.
He was okay…He was coming back to her….
Khushi looked towards the doctor and asked "Can I meet him..?"
The doctor shook his head, "I'm afraid we have to keep him sedated for the next two hours so that his injuries will heal. You can meet him soon…Don't worry Mrs.Raizada."
The doctor took his leave while Khushi collapsed down onto the seat outside the dorm. Her mother engulfed her into a tight hug, rubbing her back, spreading warmth across her body.
He was coming back to her…
~~~~~~~~~~~
Khushi walked into the hospital room, guarding her tears as she looked upon her husband's state.
He was asleep, his bare chest covered with multiple bandages.
She proceeded to sit beside his bed while looking at him with all the love in her heart.
She promised herself she would not cry but she couldn't help it…
As a lone tear escaped her eye, she looked down towards the floor biting her lips, not knowing what to do.
As if sensing her presence, she felt a warm hand clutch her wrist. She looked up towards her husband and broke down into tears as she saw him looking at her, his eyes filled with regret and guilt.
"Khushi…" he breathed out, his voice hoarse and husky.
She bit her lip from sobbing out loudly, she ran her hands through his hair shaking her head, telling him not to utter a single word.
She had forgiven him. A long time ago…He was her husband…her love. She would do anything for him.
Placing a warm kiss onto his lips, she buried her face into the crook of his neck breathing in his musky scent letting her grasp the fact that he was here..here with her.
With whatever strength that he had left, he raised his free arm and placed it around her waist, clutching her closer. She was indeed his lifeline. The only reason he did not succumb to his pain.
She was everything.
He made sure that she understood that.
"Khushi…" he whispered once more.
"Sshh…Don't say a word Arnav….just let it be…" she replied, pressing multiple kisses across his jaw bone.
They would talk it out later.
For now…this is where she needed to be. Exactly where she wanted to be…
Safe in his arms…
