Chapter 39 B
The dance and song was done with. Pereira and his guests looked happy and Rosy's job was almost done too. She'd come prepared for a scintillating performance to impress the host, and she'd have to do that, now more than ever, she figured.
She hadn't missed the sidelong glances he threw her way every few minutes, implying he was waiting to have a pending conversation with her.
Rosy very well knew what it would be about. She looked around and waited for a piece of information from Karan. She needed to know if their plan had worked before she could step in.
He was nowhere to be seen. Rosy figured he would be busy and walked towards the dinner counters. She'd seen Pereira dining with a few of his friends and didn't bother to give him company.
Besides, her senses were still reeling under the effect of the flirtatious and almost surreal dance she'd just shared with Arjun.
The mere memory of being in close proximity with him and their unpretentious gestures both embarrassed her and warmed her up from within at once.
She hadn't planned on doing any of it. She had only wanted to stop him. Rosy had known that he wouldn't take lightly to her risking her life or flirting with men in his presence.
He had always been fiercely protective of her when she hadn't needed any of it, back then. And now that she was indeed surrounded by dangers lurking all around her, she knew he would do all it took him to keep her from harm's way.
Unaware to her a lump rose in her throat as the thought began to sink in.
That only meant one thing; maybe he had already forgiven her. Maybe he hadn't realised it yet, but he had.
The hurt of betrayal would linger in their friendship for years to come, but for now, he had put it past him.
A knot tightened in her chest at the mere thought of it.. She didn't want him to.
Arjun could never really stay mad at her for long. 2 days was the maximum it took for him to walk up to her to either demand an apology from her or apologise if and when he was the one at fault.
Except one time.. He had given up on her once. And she ended up paying a huge price for it. So did he.
Something sharp jabbed at her insides upon reliving their last argument. He had walked away without staying back to knock sense into her. Though angry and distraught at her rash decisions, he hadn't put up a fight.
That was the day, Rosy knew she had lost her best friend forever.
Today, he offered to share her burden and promised to be by her side while she dealt with the ones who had filled their lives with endless pain and suffering.
But to her luck, she didn't want him to share any of it. Neither her guilt, nor her scars and definitely not the suffocating, clawing pain that possesses her heart..
As much as she knew that just sharing painful secrets with him would possibly ease her guilt a bit, she couldn't do that to him.
Because that would defeat the entire purpose of her sacrifices and the heartache she had endured all these years.

Brushing aside her thoughts, she picked up a plate and walked to the food counters to serve herself. Mindlessly she served herself some food and walked to a quiet corner of the dining hall, hoping for some privacy.
She had just slouched on one of the couches, when a lady sat down next to her and gestured her partner to join.
Rosy ignored her for a while and stabbed her food with a fork when she felt the lady's piercing gaze upon herself. She had just turned around to speak to her, when the woman shocked her by putting her spoon into Rosy's plate.
"Excuse me.. what?", her words trailed off and she looked on in shock while the lady began scooping out pieces of pineapple from her plate.
"You're still just as careless as before.", the lady whispered and slapped her shoulder gently.
Rosy rolled her eyes angrily and turned to give her a piece of her mind, "Ayesha!! You scared me."
Ayesha glanced at Sameer who seemed to be enjoying the sisters' playful glaring session and turned to Rosy.
"Khana dekhkar control nahi hua hoga na tujhse.. Bass toot padi hogi.. You're allergic to pineapple. Abhi kha leti aur phir rashes ho jaate.. Dhyaan kahan tha tera?", Ayesha scolded her.
Rosy's eyes widened watching Ayesha fuss over her callousness. It seemed just like yesterday when Ayesha would blow off steam over her over the phone and she would conveniently ignore most of her scolding.
"Bass karo, Mother hen. Stop fussing over me. And I'm fine. Waise bhi thode se pineapple se kya ho jaata. Not like I would die. Tu bhi na.."
Ayesha glared at her for her callous remark and sighed when she ignored her and resumed eating.
"Toh.. Poori ETF mujhpe nazar rakh rahi hai, huh? I'm flattered.", she winked at Ayesha and smiled at Sameer who shook his head.
Ayesha stifled a chuckle at her teasing and sighed dramatically, "Ab kya karein tum dono ziddi logon ko handle karna aasaan thodi na hai.."
Rosy smirked at the taunt and silently gestured Ayesha to follow her once they were done with dinner. Sameer didn't protest but gave Ayesha a sharp look which meant he had his eyes on her.
Once inside the deserted washroom, the women pretended to touch up their make-up and spoke in hushed voices.
Ayesha was the first one to speak, "So you think he'll bite the bait?"
Rosy dabbed some lip gloss over her lips and met Ayesha's worried gaze in the mirror, "There's no reason why he won't. Besides the proofs were very convincing.."
"Let's hope he doesn't get too suspicious, Ro.", Ayesha was worried.
Rosy turned around and held her hand gently, "You know sometimes, hatching plans and cooking up lies isn't needed. I'm merely exposing the duplicity of his men. There's very little to risk here, Ayesha."
"But phir bhi. You have to be careful.", she said squeezing Rosy's palm gently. And then as if remembering something, she spoke up again, "By the way, we're heading to Banda tomorrow."
Rosy stiffened visibly at the mention of the town but it went unnoticed by Ayesha who was busy calculating their odds.
The ETF visiting Banda could only mean one thing. They'd bypassed the dead ends in the case.
"Banda, kyun?" Rosy enquired trying to keep the agitation in her voice to a minimum.
"The case, Ro. Arjun thinks we could find some clue related to Baba there.", Ayesha replied unaware of the distress on Ro's face.
Damn him.. Was the first thought that sprang into her head.
Now this was clearly bad news. It meant Arjun had started to put pieces of the puzzle together. Though a saner part of her told her that they wouldn't find any clue there anymore, Rosy couldn't help fretting about it.
It wasn't the right time for ugly truths to start popping up yet. There was a lot to be dealt with before Rosy could even consider facing the truth, herself.
She had been holding up a lot all these years, hiding secrets and painful betrayals, steeling her spine and living in denial. Breaking down and crying would weaken her and Rosy knew she wouldn't be able to gather herself up ever again if that happened.
Particularly not now, with him around her..
All hell would break lose the day he figured the extent of her pain and loss and from then, would begin his journey to self destruction.
She had pushed him away, despite his weak protests, plucking him out of her life physically and hence ending all hopes for him to stand beside her when she needed him the most.
She knew he would berate himself for not being around when she and the family needed him.
That he would despise her for the rest of his life was an entirely different issue which she knew there was no running away from.
Rosy snapped out of her thoughts when two giggling girls stepped in.
"He's soo hot." "I know I'm going to ask him to make me a portfolio." "Oh please, he clearly wasn't interested in you." "Oh shut up, you're just jealous." "He wasn't interested in you either."
Ayesha's eyes popped out wide while Rosy rolled her eyes at the silly girls. Both didn't have to be told that their best friend had probably snubbed at the girls and samjhofied them.
Rosy followed Ayesha out and both parted after a quick peck on the cheek.

Arjun stood in a far corner of the room, his eyes searching for a glimpse of her. Memories of the sensuous dance they had shared were fresh and vivid and before he even knew it, his mind had reeled back to the past.
Though she was teasing and he was annoyed, he had felt something else in the way she looked at him. He knew her too well to know when she would be joking, flirting or being serious.
But nothing compared to the intense look he had witnessed in her twinkling hazel eyes. Something was very very different and unusual. And that bothered him, more than he cared to admit.
Though he very well knew that she was only doing her job, Arjun couldn't overlook the fact that rage coursed through him when he watched her sway in another man's arms. Yes, he was being unreasonably jealous but he couldn't help it and neither was she helping him deal with it either.
His eyes scanned the floor for a glimpse of her and finally he did see her. She was walking away from the crowd towards the stairs that lead back to the hotel.
Without a further thought and ignoring all protests by his egoistic logical mind, Arjun stepped towards her.

Rosy gasped when a hand caught her arm and pulled her into the deserted corridor.
A pair of dark eyes glinted in the dark and she sighed inwardly. This was going to be interesting.
"Miss D'costa, now that was quite something.", he paused and stepped away, guiding her towards the open terrace.
Rosy looked at him and saw him hold out a red envelope for her. She raised a brow and smiled a teasing smile, "So, what's the deal?"
Mario Pereira laughed heartily and looked at the bold woman standing before him. She was truly an enigma, with different layers to her, some he had unraveled while the others were still a mystery to him.
"I like the fact that you always come straight to the point.", he said huskily and handed her the empty envelope holding the contents in his hand.
"This helped. May I ask how did you come across the deceit?", he paused and brought his face close to hers, "Have you been keeping an eye on me, Miss D'costa?"
The confident and husky tone of his did make her nervous but she quickly managed to hide it, "It was nothing really. You just got lucky, Mr. Pereira.
A little bit of strolling on the beach and curiosity is all it took to unearth the betrayal. Sometimes we end up underestimating our resources."
Rosy leaned against the railing, "You need to be careful with people you trust."
The pictures were definitely taken using a phone camera and the evidences she'd sent him were undoubtedly real. He had followed it up and stumbled upon a deceit.
A bunch of his men were smuggling drugs to his rivals behind his back. Several small and insignificant consignments of drugs were disappearing right under his nose and he had been blind to all of it.
Though taken aback at first, he had gotten the facts verified by his trusted sources and once the betrayal was proven, he'd made sure that they were punished in a way that would set examples for the others.
Mario Pereira did not forget and he certainly did not forgive..
He had made up his mind. The lady had indeed floored him with her charm and smart thinking. He had tried digging into her past for one last time, before he made up his mind.
When nothing weird or unsual came up, he relaxed and busied himself with chalking out his next moves.
Rosanna D'costa had proven herself to be a great asset to him. Now was the time to test her loyalties to him. And he knew just how to do it.
Rosy turned to her side when he held out a velvet box in front of her. She waited for him to unclasp the lock and when he did, her eyes twinkled at the sight of it.
In it lay cradled, the most prettiest and exquisite piece of jewellery she had ever seen. The brilliant-cut diamond and pear shaped ruby crusted necklace shone against the dark velvet of the case.
She looked up at him and raised a brow, "Mr. Pereira..", she started off only to be silenced by a soft nod of head by him.
"I know you don't take gifts from strangers, Rosy." He looked at the wide expanse of the tranquil sea as he spoke.
"But I guess things have changed since then, haven't they?", he said huskily with a sharp edge to his voice which commanded attention.
