Previous - Chapter 10
"Sometimes you just need to sit for a moment and ponder;
You'll find all the answers you're looking for in life."
- Sarita😊
They sat in silence for a few minutes. They both refused to break the building silence.
Khushi blinked a few times, "Um... what did you want to talk about?"
"Where do I begin?" Arnav said out loud. He took a deep breath and looked at her, "Khushi, that night, I shouldn't have... I shouldn't have blamed you, I wasn't in my senses, I really regret it, what happened, I can't take it back but I want you to know I really regret it, I really do." He gulped.
Khushi uttered, "Do you know I felt? My husband blamed me for his sister's miscarriage and threw me out. And on top of that, I was pregnant with his child."
He kept quiet while she opened up. He knew she had to get everything out, she was hurting. All those months during her pregnancy, she bottled everything inside. He wasn't going to stop her today.
"You know the irony of the situation was that you gave me so much happiness, the feeling of becoming a mother and then in a minute you destroyed everything. You blamed me for Anjali's miscarriage and threw...you threw me out of your life."
Flashback
"Mrs Raizada congratulations you're pregnant!"
She automatically touched her stomach. "I'm?! I'm having a... Arnavji aur meri..."
"You're 3 months along, take care of yourself and make sure to take the prescribed vitamins."
"Ji Doctor." Saying that a beaming Khushi left the doctor's office and made her way home.
Back to the present
"You were in London for the week. I didn't want to tell you over the phone so I waited. The morning you were due back my foot slipped and I stumbled, nearly falling down the stairs. I was scared out of my life. I carefully held the railing and made my way down."
"Khushi you nearly fell down the... why didn't anyone tell me?"
"They didn't think much of it, no one knew about the pregnancy, so they..."
Arnav's face fell, they didn't bother to ask her if she was okay, pregnant or not, they should have at least bothered to ask her.
"I wasn't feeling well so I went to the room to rest. It wasn't until I heard you shouting that night, that I realised you were home."
Arnav's flashback;
Coming home from the airport, he was very happy. He was going to see his wife after a long week away from her. And his Di, he was waiting patiently to see her too, anytime she would have her little angel and he would be a mamu. He was excited, for Di, for him, for the entire family, they would all be happy, after enduring so much.
He halted the car in front of RM and got out. From the backseat he took out the pink teddy he bought for his Di and the bouquet of roses for his Khushi.
He walked inside and the sight in front of him left him shocked. The teddy bear and the bouquet of roses dropped with a thud on the marble floor. The smile from his face vanished.
He raced to his motionless sister on the floor; she was lying in a pool of accumulating blood.
Khushi's Flashback (continued);
"Diii" This voice made Khushi jolt awake.
Khushi's first thought was, 'Arnavji was back. She was happy.' But her second thought went to Di. Panic overcame her face and she cautiously made her way to Arnav's voice.
She made her way downstairs to see Arnav holding Anjali, both of them covered in blood. She widened her eyes and ran toward them. Arnav was clutching his sister with one hand while he was calling the ambulance with the other.
Khushi was breathing heavily; she didn't know how to comprehend what was happening. Anjali was put into the ambulance and Arnav sat in it. As the ambulance door was being closed, through the little space, Arnav stared at Khushi with a stolid expression on his face.
Khushi raced to the hospital where she saw everyone waiting outside the OT room. Khushi sat in a corner and cried. Arnav kept pacing up and down.
The doctor came out and said that they were able to save Anjali but due to the fall, they weren't able to save the baby.
Everyone cried till there weren't any more tears left in them.
Khushi walked over to Arnav, "Arnavji." Khushi crashed into Arnav's chest and sobbed.
Khushi felt herself being pulled away from Arnav. Khushi saw Mami holding her hand.
Mami spat at her, "Patti Sari, you're feeling sad, huh... Sasuma and I left Anjali with you; in your care and you... this is what you take care of her!"
Khushi said in a barely audible tone, "I... Di was fine, she was asleep when I checked her, and I don't know when I dozed off. Sorry!"
Mami sobbed, "Sorry won't bring back my Anjali betiya's happiness. Your name is Khushi yet you only take away people's happiness."
Arnav was exhausted, "Enough Mami, this is a hospital."
Saying that he walked out of the hospital feeling helpless.
Arnav's flashback (continued)
He drove straight to a nearby bar and drank until he could barely stand straight much less for thinking straight. He somehow made it home safely.
As Arnav staggered upstairs, Mami's words kept playing in his head.
He opened his bedroom door to see Khushi sitting on the bed crying.
He closed the door and moved towards her. Khushi got up and asked, "Do you think I'm responsible for what happened to Di?"
Arnav's anger started rising, his intoxication, Mami's accusations on Khushi, his Di suffering in the hospital. He shouted, "YES, everything happened because of you."
Khushi was in a state of shock. Before she could say a word, Arnav continued, "You're the reason Shyam left my Di and now she even lost her baby. I wish I never met you. Why don't you just leave? Huh!! The six months contract is up, technically we're already divorced, so what's holding you back?"
Khushi started sobbing, "Arnavji I..."
Arnav interrupted her, "Leave!" He moved to the cupboard and emptied all of her belongings into a bag.
Khushi clutched his arm and pleaded, "Please Arnavji, don't do this!"
Without heeding to a word again, he shoved the bag into her hands and pushed her out of the room, locking the door.
End of flashback!
"When you... when you threw me out, I started feeling a throbbing pain in my stomach, getting alarmed I went straight to the hospital, fearing for the baby."
Arnav's voice cracked, "And?"
"The doctor examined me and told me that he was worried about my pregnancy."
"Worried?"
"He adviced me that the pregnancy was dangerous as I wasn't strong enough to carry the baby."
"But you, why did you... the risk"
"I wanted to have our baby." Khushi said with tears in her eyes.
Arnav's heart broke, the girl in front of him, sacrificed everything for him and his family and what did he do. Nothing but raise his finger and point at her, blaming her and misunderstanding her.
"Khushi you could have died, you were in coma for a year."
"I saw what Di went through... I didn't want to lose my baby. Everyone was gone from my life, I had no one to call my own, and I just had my baby with me."
"Khushi...you."
"Do you love Sakshi?"
"Of course I do."
"I made the right decision; I wouldn't have wanted it any different."
Arnav got up and gave Sakshi to Khushi, "Khushi I, I just wanted to apologize for what I did. I know you probably won't forgive me and you hate me... but I just want you to know that I, I'm sorry Khushi. IF you want to be away from me, fine, I'll stay away from you both, but..."
Khushi sighed and said with a heavy heart, "Sakshi won't be able to live without you."
She continued, "Today she was crying because she wanted you."
Arnav knew where this was going Khushi was trying to sacrifice again' but he won't let her, "She's just used to me, the habit will break, she'll get used to you."
Khushi pressed, "You and I both know she won't be able to... she's just a little child, a baby Arnavji."
Arnav's voice came out hoarse, "Don't make this harder for me."
Khushi gulped down some of her tears and continued, "You're everything to her. My own daughter doesn't come to me; she doesn't hush in my arms. What right do I have?"
"Khushi I didn't mean to make you feel guilty, that's the last thing I wanted you to feel."
"I nurtured her Arnavji, for 9 months, but you're wrong, you have more of a right over her any day. I've seen the love in your eyes for her, she's your life. I can't take away your life from you; I'm not that cruel Arnavji. I know what it's like to not have your parents with you, God was kind enough to send me two wonderful people I can call my parents today despite losing my own.
And you Arnavji, you know what it's like to not have your parents by your side in your life. When Sakshi has her parents, both of them at that, why should she suffer for her parents mistakes."
"I understand Khushi, but what I did to you. I robbed you of your happiness. You lost so much in your life because of me, because of my stupidity. I made you leave everything behind; your family. Khushi, she's yours. You sacrificed your life for her."
"Arnavji, I'm not trying to come between you and Lavanyaji if that's why you're hesitating. I just meant for Sakshi's sake, if you could just bear with me."
She turned around with her back facing Arnav.
Arnav's eyebrows frowned, "Khushi what do you mean?"
Khushi turned to face him again, "Aap aur Lavanyaji."
Arnav stepped closer to her, "Khushi what are you talking about? Coming between me and La?"
Khushi held onto Sakshi tighter, "Lavanyaji's married."
"Yeah Khushi. She's married to Dhruv my cousin!"
Khushi's eyes widened, "So you aren't married?"
"Of course I'm married Khushi."
Khushi's eyebrows frowned, "Huuhh, then?"
He looked straight into her eyes, "To you, who else?"
"We're divorced."
"No we aren't! Because I didn't make you sign any divorce papers in the first place."
Arnav paused for a second and then continued, "The only reason why I was hesitating was because I knew you just wanted to compromise. Khushi, I just want your happiness and if that's staying far away from me then so be it.
"Khushi when I woke up the day after I threw you..." He couldn't get himself to say the words threw you out' He looked at her and then continued, "I looked for you all over and then the memories started flooding back, I searched every street and lane for you Khushi. I really regretted what I did.
When Lavanya came with Sakshi, I felt like God gave me a second chance. Every single moment while you were in the hospital Khushi; I prayed to your devi maiya. Every time I saw Sakshi, I felt like you were there with me at every step.
I love you, I truly love you Khushi, I can't live without you, but if you want me to be gone, I'll go because I've caused you enough pain already. I don't want to add anymore."
Khushi blinked her eyes, trying to comprehend what she just heard.
He walked towards the door signalling his leave. Khushi looked down at Sakshi and then at Arnav's retreating form. She closed her eyes and the words just left her mouth, "Don't leave."
Arnav turned to her and just stood there frozen.
"Arnavji she needs you..." in a low tone she said, "I need you!" Arnav's head shot up hearing her last words, 'I need you'
"Im not saying that I forgive you for what happened but for Sakshi I want to put it behind us. I want my baby to get both her parent's love."
"Khushi, if its what you want then okay, I don't expect you to forgive me just like that, but I'd like to put our past behind us for the better."
