Chapter Five

Pain

Arnav asked Khushi two days ago to accompany him to some business party, but she
refused. And today she went with his family for a relative's wedding. He was surprised as he did not expect her to agree, but she did once Anjali and Nani asked her. As Khushi agreed, Arnav too went with them though he was never interested to go and leave his work. It was a chance for him to introduce himself with Khushi as a couple to the world, and he couldn't let it go. During the ceremony Khushi was with Priya most of the time talking about things Arnav was curious to know as he saw them speak enthusiastically.

Arnav got back home from work at dinner time, but he asked Hari Prakaash to bring his meal to his room because he was tired. He opened the room's door to find Khushi knitting something to pass time.

"Hi," Arnav sighed as he felt very exhausted all of a sudden. It is always like this that you do not feel tired while working, but when you rest you realize how exhausted you are. "It was really a tiring day. I just wanted to finish all the delayed work today itself, and get back home. It's all because I did not work for two days at our wedding .maybe the rush was not necessary, but your parents did not mind," Arnav spoke as he was taking off his jacket and tie.

'And now you're blaming MY parents.'

"I didn't ask you about your day yet." After coming home, Arnav always tells Khushi about his day then ask her about hers. He wanted her to talk with him, so he can understand the problem, and know how she thinks.maybe he can handle everything, but her answer is the same.

"Nothing Happened," Khushi said with a barely audible voice; it was actually to herself not an answer to him. 'I don't know how can you talk with me normally after knowing that I'm forced into this. Nothing matters to you. I really despise you.' Khushi closed her eyes not wanting to cry again, then she opened then hearing the knocks at the door of his roomit had never been hers.

"Come in," Arnav said, "put the tray on the table, and tell Nani that I'll eat here and Khushi too."

"I'll have a quick shower and join you for dinner," Arnav said to Khushi who did not hear him or rather did not want to listen to him. As Arnav entered the washroom for the shower, Khushi's phone rang; it was her father's number.

"Namaste,"

"Khushi Bitya, kaise hai tum? Why didn't you phone meTuhje bahut yaad aaya hai, Bitya," Garima's tears threatened to leave her eyes.

"Ammahow are you and everyone?" Khushi couldn't speak longer.

"We are missing you, dear. You were the life of this house..why didn't you call me? It has been a whole week. I didn't want to disturb you, that's why I didn't call before, but I had to assure that you're fine."

"I missed you too, Amma." Khushi's tears fell from her eyes as she listened to her mother. The call reminded her of her misery. "I'll come to see you tomorrow."

"Okay BityaI'll disconnect the call now." Garima wiped off her tears with a smile and hope to see her daughter the next day. After that, she checked on her husband with sad and painful eyes. She shook her head to stop herself from thinking badly about the unknown future.

Arnav wore his clothes very quickly as he heard a sound of cries; he got worried at the thought of seeing Khushi broken. He stepped out of the washroom to see Khushi lying lifelessly on the bed with her hands covering her face. Khushi was crying very badly that he could not tolerate it; he just wanted to recognize her pain and heal it if he could.

"Khushi." He sat beside her and put a hand on her shoulder hesitantly, but she did not respond. He called her twice until she could digest her surroundings.

"Leave me alone," Khushi whispered numbly.

"Khushi, what happened? Please talk t me. Maybe I can do something." He said desperately.

"The illness can never be the medication," Khushi replied sarcastically thinking of Arnav to be her problem, and the cause cannot be her savior. Ironically for her, he was the one to offer her a help.

"Khushi."

"Leave me alone."

"This is not a solution. I need to know what's bothering you," Arnav said innocently not knowing what was going on in Khushi's mind. He was almost begging her to talk to him.
"You are bothering me. Okay? Now I shall leave you alone." Khushi got up speaking with a high-pitch. She walked to the poolside to stand in front of the pool. She stared at it numbly not looking at it particularly. Arnav sighed looking at her retreating back. He ran a hand through his hair and sat on the bed. At that moment, Arnav realized that his job to make everything alright between him and Khushi is so difficult, and again he needs to be patient with herfor her..for himselffor them.

When Arnav left home the next morning, Khushi got ready to visit her family. She took Nani's permission before leaving.

"Why are you going alone? Where is Arnav?" Nani asked.

"He has an important work to do." Khushi lied.

"But this is the first time you're going there after marriage it's inuaspicious to go alone."
'This marriage is already inuaspicious,' Khushi thought before replying. "Nothing will happen. I'm going to the mandir and pray for that after seeing Amma." Khushi justified. Nani was convinced by Khushi and allowed her to go.

Garima welcomed Khushi with Rangoli at the threshold of her house thinking that Arnav would be with her, but Khushi used the same excuse with her Amma. Babuji was out; when Khushi asked about him, Garima did not say where he was; she just said she did not know.
"Why did not you call me? Damaadji phoned your Babuji twice or thrice and you did not." Khushi was astonished and alarmed to hear that lest Arnav told her father anything about their relationship. For a moment, Khushi held her breath waiting for her Amma to scold her, but she did not; Khushi got shocked to hear the next.

"He always assures us about you. He is such a kind guy, Bitya. He will make you happy." Garima seemed proud to have Arnav as her damaad.

"Have you told Payal that I'm coming?" Khushi asked diverting the conversation after keeping quiet for some moments.

"The whole neighbourhood knows of your presence. Some of them helped me with the rangoli and some with the sweets. Happyji spread the news." Garima said with a smile only a mother can master when she is happy to see her daughter as someone's wife. "Payal is coming soon. You don't know how everything changed once you leftyou're the life of this place, Bitya."

Khushi heard the same dialogues from Buaji, who was at the bazaar, but Garima replied instead of her. Khushi waited for Payal and Babuji to come; she spent some time chatting with them before leaving. After that, she went to the mandir to pray to her Devi Maiyya to guide her to the right path, and get everything back to its place.

Arnav returned early to find his family sitting at the living room watching a movie. Once he sat, Nani asked him about going with Khushi. He could not believe that she left without asking him.

'At least she asked Nani.' He thought wanting to justify her condition. "I had an important work, Nani that's why I could not make it."

"She told me this, but you need to make some time for her, for your familyit's not about only you anymore."

Arnav was speechless to know that she made his work as an excuse, but she proved to be smart; a faint smile played on his lips as he thought of Khushi's intelligence. Yes, his love for Khushi was increasing by the day, and he could not deny that. He always wishes and prays for everything to be alright, to have the power to correct everything, to have Khushi by his side, and he believes that he will is able to do so.

"She wanted to see her mother, and I cannot stop her." Arnav replied, "next time I'll go with her, don't worry."

As everyone got engrossed in the movie, Arnav couldn't help but join them as the dinner time was yet to come. The first thing he saw was a crazy musician; he shook his head at what his family was watching, but then he realized that the story was different. The next scene the heroine was angry as her husband was finding it funny. Then she showed him some sketches.

'There is no relationship between us' She shouted*. He was touched by the scene; it was speaking of his married life.

'But what do you know about love?' Her husband replied, and left to walk alone in the streets of an unknown city.** Scene by scene Arnav was connecting the events of the movie with his own life until he found out that the girl had a lover, and her husband is helping her to find him. He stared at the screen not wanting to think further. The door's bell got him back to the world. He looked at its direction to find Khushi standing there.

"Bitya, you came alone at this time?" Nani sounded worried.

"Babuji accompanied me, but he refused to come in."

"Okay." Nani and Arnav were relieved to hear that.

"It's a break now. Hari Prakaash, serve the dinner now." Mami said feeling hungry all of a sudden maybe because sometimes when one does not have anything to do, s/he thinks of food. As everyone sat around the dining table, Arnav excused them saying that he was not hungry and he needed some rest. Everyone looked at Khushi wondering about the change which happened to Arnav in seconds.

"He works a lot nowadays, so needs to rest." Khushi replied to their unsaid question.

Arnav was pacing in the room; he did not change his clothes yet or did anything except throwing his jacket and tie on the recliner. When he heard the sound of the door's knob, he looked at the direction. Khushi stopped at the doo at seeing Arnav tensed more than any time before. She looked away, closed the door and stood there knowing that something was coming up, and she got ready to whatever it would be.

"Khushi,I have a questionyour answer will be either yes or noI hope you'll give me an answer," he looked at her, but she did not respond, so he carried on as she did not object. "After thinking of what you've said.yesterday you said that I'm bothering you, and today you went out without informing meI know this relationship doesn't mean anything to you, but it does to me I tried to make sense of everything, but couldn't.then that stupid movieI don't know why I watched it," He bit his lips cursing whatever came to his mind. Khushi did not understand anything as he was giving an introduction, and that was annoying her.

"The question is..I don't know, but I just thought of thisby any chance..I mean.do you have..?" He closed his eyes and turned to the other side to say those words. He felt a dagger was put on his heart. " Is there any guy in your life?" He said quickly at once.
Khushi stars back for some time. 'What's is he thinking about now? Why do all think that I love someone?' She sighed, 'No one understands anything.'

ed at hiArnav's heartbeats thudded so fast almost tearing his ribcage. The mere thought was a torture for him, but he needed an answer. Momentarily, he was broken.

"NO."

Note: The movie is Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam starring by Aishwaryia Rai, Salman Khan and Ajay Devgan. I hope you know the scenes I've mentioned. Again, I want to say that I'm not responsible for every word in the story; it depends on the character itself e.g. Arnav said the movie is stupid that does not mean it's my POV; I myself like the movie.

res...yeahhh 1st to comment, HAPPY...poor Arnav he is such a nice guy and Khushi beeing Sankadevi, getting intresting every update...well written part...
