Veteran Actress Sandhya Shantaram Passes Away
PART SIX.
Khushi asked the cab driver to stop a street away from her house. No way was she going to run the risk of waking them by the sound of the taxi. She prayed to her Devi Maiyya that they were asleep. She couldn't handle a scene right now. All her energy had left her body, due to a certain Arnav Singh Raizada.
She stopped right outside her house, and then bent to take off her sneakers. With her shoes in her hand, she tip toed to the front door and as quietly as possible, inserted her key into the lock. Turning the key in the lock, she gave out a curse as the key made a loud clicking noise.
Please be asleep.
Please be asleep.
She prayed to her Devi Maiyya, and just for a safety net, also ten or twenty other mythological Gods, just in case her favorite God decided not to help her out. It wouldn't come entirely as a surprise, if you looked back on the way the day had turned out to be.
She entered the threshold of her house, closing the door behind her as silently as she could.
Seeing that the lights were all turned off, she breathed a sigh of relief. May be she would not even have to tell them that she had been fired again.
Tomorrow morning, as soon as possible she'd find herself another job.
No one had to know.
But all her plans were doused in cold water, as suddenly someone flicked on the lights.
She looked at Shashi Gupta standing near the dining table, and with a sense of resignation, squared her shoulders.
This was going to be a long night.
'Did you shift end early bitiya?' Shashi Gupta asked with a sweet smile pasted on his face.
Khushi tried hard not to cringe and forced herself to look into his eyes. Years had taught her, that she had to stand her ground, or people walked all over you, without one moment of consideration.
'No. The job did not work out.'
'What do you mean it didn't work out?' Shashi suddenly lashed out in an angry voice. Then realizing how he must have sounded, he again smiled that sweet smile.
Khushi, for the millionth time wondered, what made him tick. Why did he pretend with this sweetness, this fake care, when there was no one around them? No one to observe their interaction and then sing praises of how the noble Shashi Gupta had adopted an orphan.
But she knew anything she said or did would be futile. She had made her peace with it long ago.
She had learned to select her battles.
'I mean, that it didn't work out. So I came home. And now if you would excuse me, I would like to go in my room and sleep. I am very tired.'
'Did you quit again? Are you out of your mind? You ungrateful little twit, how can you do this? Don't you know how much have we sacrificed for you? And now, when the time has come to pay us back, you behave this way.'
'I did not quit. I was fired okay? Do you think I like not having a regular income?'
'Oh, don't you go around changing your tune now. Did you or did you not, quit the job I had so painstakingly got you, at Happy Mehra's shop?' Shashi asked angrily, walking towards her.
Khushi smelled the fumes of alcohol on his breathe, and hastily took two steps back.
'Your Happyji touched me inappropriately. Of course I quit.'
'Oh God! So what? It's not like you are married. If he touched you once or twice, what was the harm? Its not like he was doing anything more. And you had such a good pay too, at the job. Now I can't even show my face to him, during our regular card games.' Shashi accused Khushi, as if what happened had been entirely her fault.
In fact, she was sure, that in his eyes, it probably was.
Everything was her fault. Ever since she had been adopted by him, she had faced constant degradation, emotional abuse and what not.
No, he never hit her. He didn't want to risk anybody finding out the truth accidently by seeing the scares on her body, as she bruised very easily.
So he saved all his venom in his words. He struck where it hurt the most.
She remembered how she had tried to get away once, and what it had led to.
But now, now she was not a kid. She was twenty two, almost twenty three in a few more months.
Surely she could walk away if she wanted to, but it was not so easy. After all, it wasn't just her that needed to get away.
There was another person, who had been her one ray of sun in the constant darkness that her life had been.
And she had to stay for her, until she had enough money and resources.
This time she wouldn't repeat the same mistake.
This time, she won't leave her behind.
Too much was at stake.
'Arey Laddu. When did you come?' Madhumati Sharma rasped, trying to get up from her lying position on the bed.
'Don't you dare. Keep lying down. You know the doctor has asked you to rest right.' Khushi admonished her, coming towards her, and plopping herself down on the next twin bed.
'Uff. What does the doctor know? I am telling you, this is all his plan to get some extra money out of us.'
'Yeah. The doctor has only studied God knows how many years, and gotten a degree in medicine. Why, in the name of Lord would, he know anything about how to treat a patient?' Khushi rolled her eyes at her, only to earn a glare from Madhumati.
'What are you doing home? Hadn't you told me that you would be out very late and then sleep at the house of that friend of yours?'
Khushi looked at her nervously, knowing that she had failed yet again.
Failed her.
'Woh, actually, the job didn't work out.'
Madhumati's eyes widened.
'Hein? What do you mean it didn't work out? Did you quit? Was your new boss like that kamina Happy? Tell me. Hum uski taange tod denge, if he had dared to touch you.'
'No no. My boss was a lady.'
'Toh? Did she do anything?' Madhumati asked, making Khushi widen her eyes in response.
'What are you staring at me like that for? Don't think that I am too old. I know all the things that you youngsters are into now a days. In fact, you know, I keep seeing Preeto and Manisha together all the time. I am telling you, I have a feeling there's something fishy. They keep on holding hands.'
Khushi couldn't help it. She laughed.
And didn't stop for full ten minutes.
'Oh God!' She managed to say, wiping a tear from her eye.
'No. my boss did not do anything to me. Except fire me that is. But it wasn't my fault. It was that rakshashas fault. I am telling you Buaji, if I ever meet him again, I am going to kill him. With my bare hands.'
'What are you talking about?'
Khushi then explained her the entire incident that had happened to her. But something stopped her from mentioning the later parts of the incident, about how he had offered her a job.
She didn't want to worry her unnecessarily.
Madhumati kept quiet, as she listened to everything that Khushi said. And when she saw that Khushi had tears in her eyes, she knew that she was again blaming herself for losing out the job, no matter how much she denied it.
'It's okay laddu. Trust Devi Maiyya. She has planned everything for us. You will find a new job. Don't worry about it.'
Khushi was about to say something, when Madhumati started coughing and wheezing holding her chest. Khushi hurriedly searched the drawers for the medicine, and made her take it with a glass of water.
After making sure that she was okay, and that she would be sleeping now, as medicine made her drowsy, Khushi went to the window sill and looked out.
She searched the sky for the two stars that she talked to every night, knowing that they would provide her solace and guide her.
