Both blatant and subtle forms of plagiarism are rampant on this forum. The first type is easy to identify, but the latter is tough to decipher and prove, and hence, somehow seems more dangerous. I've been a victim of both kinds of thievery, and like many other writers on IF, am so fed up that I'm thinking about moving my fic to a protected blog.
An important aspect of writing is waiting for that moment when inspiration strikes. That particular instant when a beautiful idea dawns and you feel restless until you pen it down. But story writing is essentially about sheer hard work. It is about immersing yourself in an imaginary world and typing until your eyes and fingers hurt, your head aches and you feel temporarily drained of all emotions...apart from the happiness of knowing that you've managed to transcribe every aspect of that particular scene in your mind onto paper.
When a person plagiarises, he/she is essentially showing absolute disrespect for this hard work and passion of the original writer. Ignorance about the seriousness of this offence is very frustrating. But the basic insensitivity behind this sort of thievery is downright unforgivable.
