Chapter 21- Awareness

PAST

They say that life changes in matter of seconds well for her it did change in the matter of a day -24 hrs to be precise.

Abhi had already left for US and then there was Arjun who was waiting for her one nod and midst of these two she was drained to even think or make up her mind and thus she ran away from them and their memories

Life wasn't the same and it would never be 'how easily she had said to Arjun that they will be friends but there wasn't a ounce of truth in it - things had changes between them and it would be never be same again there equations had changed '..

Knowing him and intimately knowing him were two different things, his awareness had increased more than she would have liked, his each little habit was etched in her mind and his touch still lingered on her. He had held her like she meant the world to him and treated her with such love that she wasn't able to remove those memories from her head, how much she wanted

For the first time in her life she choose the escapist route and tried to avoid Arjun as much as she could and that wasn't difficult due to the nature of cases coming to them .

Arjun on the other hand was getting impatient, his need for Riya had increased after that night and it took a lot of self control from his part to not love her the way he wanted to. Both of them had tried to maintain a professional relationship but even an accidental touch could raise havoc in him and he made sure that every time that happened, Riya knew what effect she had on him '.

If Riya was in turmoil Arjun was desperate ''..

Abhi had stepped into a new life in US. He felt betrayed by his love and it wasn't something that he could change 'it was her decision and she choose him. He had warned Riya many times but it was her love that was weak and couldn't handle her attraction towards Arjun..

Thus he immersed himself in studies and work, he didn't want any spare time so that his mind could even think about her thoughts in India..

It was easier said than done because she was present in his thoughts always

It was a week after that Night that Riya had come face to face with him directly

"Riya , yeh file Arjun Sir ko de dena "

"Shree , main kyun "

"Yaar , mereko Neha ke saath jana hai and Chotu Rathore Sir ke saath gaya hai . Please chali ja na "

"Make sure to get his signatures Ri "

And Shree had vanished in leaving her in a dilemma to go there but of course her heart knew that once alone with him he would seek answers which she didn't have. As usual she had no choice but to go there

She walked into his home and was to made to wait for him but a picture caught his eye 'it looked like a family picture with a small boy enveloped by his parents from either sides', unknowingly she moved her fingers over the smile which the baby Arjun adored the same which wasn't seen anywhere now..

"It does catch the eye, doesn't it "

"He doesn't Smile Like this "

"Yes , it's been a while now "

Riya realized her mistake and turned to find a elegant and a beautiful lady standing next to her and she was also watching the picture intently

"Sorry, I am Riya Dutta from ETF "

"Nice to meet you Riya, Arjun will be down in a while"

"That were Arjun Mom and dad, they died very young leaving him orphan at a very young age "

"But he had you na "

"Yes we both were there for each other, only I was a little late for him "

Riya was perplexed for a while but then she had no other option then to wait for him. The way Arjun dadi was looking at her and the smile that adorned her lips was making her a little uncomfortable

"Well, I want to say thanks to you as well for being such a good friend to him. He really values you"

Riya was startled with the comment. Even though it was a simple thanks but she could see there was more to it than the superficial meaning.

With these questions twirling around her head, she still managed to respond by saying calmly,

"Thanks but he has been a great friend to me."

She knew that it was a lie, that Arjun and she were more than just good friends but it was too awkward to do so.

"Riya "Arjun wanted to be the first to meet her but his Dadi had beaten him and when he couldn't wait he came down

"Arjun, these papers need you signature and I need to send them back to the Head office "

"Okies , Here he returned the signed copies to her"

"It was lovely meeting you Mrs Rawte , ill leave now"

"Fine, I'll walk you out "

She felt the intensity of his stare while they were walking towards her car but she wasn't the one who could be flustered easily

"Are you alright "Arjun hated the silence between them. He had worked hard towards earning her trust and friendship he wasn't letting it go away now

Riya thought maybe this was the perfect time to say what was going in her head

"Maybe it's best if we have a bit more distance"

"I don't want people to think that we are in love or something on those lines. It won't be correct "

"Riya you know I never thought that I will fall in love with a coward but look here I am in love with you "

He hated her that moment to end everything between them, it wasn't love but they were going in that direction only. He wasn't a fool that he wouldn't notice the changes in her .He knew that she felt something but was running away from it wasn't something he had expected from her .

"You really think I am a coward "

"Yes I do Ms Riya Dutta, You are only concerned about other people"

"I am not a coward Arjun, and I don't care about the other people but I do care close to me. Those people are thinking about us and I don't want give them any false hope nor do I want to give you a false hope Arjun. You deserve someone better and I can't lead you in a direction which I am not sure of. I have to be honest with you

"Maybe that is the problem; you aren't being honest about yourself and your feelings"

She was back to her home but sleep was far away from her and hence she thought of reading something but was disturbed by a knock.

It was her dad waiting to talk to her..

"Dad , shouldn't you be sleeping "

"Riya , what's wrong " So typical of her Dad she thought , he would never beat around the bush but would be blunt .

"Nothing Dad, I am fine "

"Stop Lying Riya, What's going on between you and Arjun ...Do you love him?"

She froze for a moment but then maybe he was the only one with whom she could share her burden.

She kept her head on his lap and stayed there for a while to compose her thoughts '.

"I don't know dad, I am not sure. I never thought that Abhi would leave me but he did and Arjun I am just not sure about him. I know that he loves me and I do feel from him but is it love, I don't know "

"Then why don't you try to know about your feelings more Riyu "

"I am scared Dad"

"Sacred of the truth Riya or scared that your heart betrays you or scared for what others will think. I didn't bring you up in a way that you have to scared from anyone Riya.

"In The matters of heart don't listen to the mind beta. Sometimes in life you really need to let go of everything and do what right for you and what makes you happy. I have seen you around Arjun, you are different with him. Anyone who knows you can figure that out and maybe Abhi also did.

I still don't forgive him for hurting you the way he did but I want you to be happy and I can't see you taking an escapist route. You are my daughter and you will face anything that comes your way and not avoid it."

Was her Dad correct, was she sacred to know the truth or scared to face it. She was scared what people would think and it was her own guilt that was stopping her to acknowledge the feelings towards him.

Chapter 22 – Truth

Present

She felt light the very moment she had stepped out of Abhi house; finally the anger and frustration which had been stored were out. It wasn't suffocating her anymore. The more closer to the truth she went to the more she got freed from the shackles that had bound her.

She didn't care of the time or the day but her only aim was to know the truth and thus she reached Sameer house.

"Riya , what are you doing at this time "

"Sorry Sameer, but I needed some answers "

"I thought you would come earlier but better late than never "

She waited for a moment before saying "What actually happened In Justice Choudhury case"

Sameer Monologue

It was one of the cases which Arjun had gone undercover, it was at least 3 months after your wedding. We had all the proofs against Ashfaq and it was one day before his trial when all the proofs went missing. He was later killed in an encounter planned by us but Arjun didn't let it go and he started the investigation himself and the name of Justice Chaudhary propped up. At first he didn't believe it as all of us had high regards for him but still when we dug deeper we found that he was involved in the whole racket and a huge amount of money was transferred into Abhi account as a scholarship fund. I had told Arjun to let you know the details but he didn't want to as you were close to him and he didn't want to hurt you but alas you came to know the truth not from us and as expected you were angry at him and as predicted you never believed us .I still remember the way you had shouted that he can never do that and Arjun had made you quiet owing to his seniority.

After that day we further digged into his past due to which Arjun was out the whole time and thus couldn't clarify the things with you which I hoped he could have done

We found out that this wasn't the first instance that he had taken money from people to bail them out. The only thing in his favor was that he used to take small amounts and would never mess with any high profile cases. He never wanted attention to himself thus low profile cases and small amounts. We were lucky enough to get the warrant for his house and that's when he got really angry.

All the proofs which we had were stolen by Vikram, he was the one who helped him take the proofs from our office. When we found out it was too late and we could only set an enquiry on him but yet again he refused to budge a single word against it

Thus we were proved wrong and Justice Chaudhary had escaped not before making sure that he would make Arjun life hell which he succeeded in. When we told you everything

"I failed to believe you "

I don't blame you Riya, I Know that knowing someone from childhood, it would be difficult for you to understand it.

"Thanks Sameer"

"Riya , There is one more thing you should know"

"Arjun had paid for Abhi scholarship its true but he didn't agree it for the first time, Justice Chaudhary had proposed him the plan. He never agreed it it but I dint know what had happened or changed that he ended up doing that. Arjun never had the intention to separate you and Abhi he just wanted to test your love and he would have moved out of you were guys were strong enough …

"I Know Sameer, I know what he wanted "

"Riya, he really loves you ... You are his reason of being "

"And I am because of him Sam . Anyways its late, I am leaving "

"Take Care Riya "

Everything was making sense to her now, the pieces came together and she knew the full picture. She had already taken a decision and was just waiting for Arjun to come back so she could tell him about it and of course Shree wedding was there too.

Miles away a man lay on the hospital bed surrounded by all sorts of machines

When he was first bought by a truck driver into the hospital the doctors had seen no hope for him but yet here he was fighting for his life everyday …it was a miracle that he had survived.

There were numerous bullet wounds on his legs and one at his back and the man was beaten before being shot.It was highly surprising that he managed to escape from where the guys had kept him.

The only thing they knew about the man was through a dog tag which had the name Arjun inscribed on it and at the back there was a date...

Shree was trying to figure out a lot of things..Arjun had gone missing in their mission and all of them were trying to track him. Chotu had eventually reached the gang and had gunned down each one of them only to find out that Arjun had escaped but was hurt. They had tracked down the nearby hospitals but with no results.

Abhi had lost everything today, the words of Riya were still haunting him..

She was correct why hadn't he trusted her, was it his insecurity of not being her equal clouded his judgment, he had know her so well - she had always respected her relations. She would have respected theirs too and they would have been happy now.

But her happiness now was with another man who did everything to keep her with him and she was correct he won her and he lost everything in the process.

There was nothing now which could bind them together and that very night he had taken the decision to go away from their lives forever. He had come with a motto to get her back but was going empty handed because Arjun ruled her heart now and he was just the past.

He lost her love and her friendship too.

Note – With these updates officially Abhi leaved their lives and the story too never too return. I really couldn't help but feel bad for him, he might have his share of faults but then everyone does. He really did pay a big price for the same …sometimes I can't think that did he deserve it because he was manipulated too.
