Hey guys, the long awaited leap is here. This is the last chapter when you'll be seeing Arshi as teenagers, from the next chapter the story you shall get to see them in the post-18 age group.
Chapter 28: Fast forward.
2005-2008
Three years is a long duration, but not so for Arnav and Khushi. These three years were nothing short of a roller coaster ride for the two of them; one that provides you with an adrenaline rush; you forget everything, every worry, circumstance in the world during that two odd minute ride. It's just you, the wind blowing in and around you and your heart beating rapidly from the rush that you get. And then all of a sudden it stops; the wind settles down and you come back to reality. The last three years were like that ride in every sense. School had ended and junior college was a very different world. There was more freedom but the sense of freedom was overshadowed by the advent of a sense of responsibility; something that would keep on increasing as years passed by. So many career decisions were to be made and these life altering decisions wouldn't be taken predominantly in the two year life span of junior college; Arnav and Khushi had their career paths defined from the beginning itself; Arnav's decision more out of his lineage than his own interests while Khushi's arising merely out of the ambitions she had harbored since childhood.
Arnav had since school decided that he would become an engineer from the Indian Institute of Technology; and had studied very hard all through junior college. For a change, Abhimanyu had intervened when it had come to the decision regarding the university where Arnav would study; he had wanted Arnav to study abroad having more faith in the education system of those universities. He didn't want his successor and the heir to the large empire that he had built to study from any random college in India, where education wasn't world class. But Arnav had put his foot down. He didn't consider foreign universities to be extraordinary; sure they provided good education but so did IIT. In fact IITs had world recognition; besides Arnav believed it didn't matter from where he took his education, an Indian University or some fancy American university; the end result was going to be the same and he was going to enter into his father's business. After the initial intervention Abhimanyu didn't interfere anymore having been convinced by his son that the quality of education wasn't going to be hampered by studying in India. Aradhana had been more than happy with Arnav's decision; she agreed to Arnav's point of view, moreover like any other mother, she didn't want her son to stay away from her. However she didn't voice this reason for she knew it would have driven Arnav away.
Khushi hadn't known when exactly she had been drawn to the profession of medicine. There were no doctors in her family to have made an influence on her nor had she witnessed any terminally ill person to have urged her to make medicine her career path. She just liked the profession; the idea of giving back to mankind by serving people as a doctor was what had appealed her the most. The path to becoming a doctor wasn't an easy one; she had to burn the midnight oil, trying to score equally well in her HSC exams and the various entrance tests but her efforts bore fruit. She had secured admission in the prestigious Seth G. S. medical college affiliated with KEM hospital. When she got selected by this college, Khushi's happiness knew no bounds. It was only after she got admitted into this college did she realize that her dreams for her future were actually materializing.
Aman's choice of a profession was done purely on a whim. Intelligent as he was, he hadn't given any serious thought to his career. A serious talk from Shashi had been required to make him decide on the same. Aman's father had been residing in Dubai for several years owing to his job; it was just him and Madhumati in their Mumbai home and since Madhumati was alarmed by her son's nonchalance towards his vocation, she had urged Shashi to have a talk with him. The talk hadn't been long; Aman hadn't been disinterested; infact he had made a decision regarding the same and had even consulted his father; he wanted to become a lawyer but wasn't sure of Madhumati's views on the same. On hearing this, Madhumati had given a sigh of relief; she was ok with whatever her son chose and was surprised by Aman's skepticism regarding her support.
These three years also saw the evolving of friendship between Ayushman and NK. Both were of opposite nature; NK more outgoing and talkative like his sister while Ayushman was shy and reticent. But they gelled out well, both even visiting each others' homes regularly; be it for studying or playing. NK also introduced Ayushman to his muh-bola bhai Shyam. The trio spent lots of time together inspite of Shyam's busy college schedule. He even considered Ayushman like a brother; Shyam himself was the only child of his parents. Of course he wasn't aware of Ayushman's relation to Arnav; their affinity wouldn't have been the same then but the fact that Ayushman was Arnav's brother never came up. Shyam on his part too had forgotten about Arnav; he had planned to propose to Khushi by the end of her first year in medicine. He decided that he had waited for a long time; enough for the two of them to grow into adults as also for Khushi to obliterate Arnav's memories.
Little did he know that obliteration was a long haul for Khushi hadn't forgotten Arnav as some nugatory being. Not a day passed when she the thought of Arnav didn't cross her mind and she had finally affirmed that she might be in love with him. How else would she explain the vehement need to share every other joy and sorrow of the past three years with him? She had had some infatuations in these three years too; she wouldn't deny that, her hormones had been too jumpy, but it had been easy to dismiss them as temporary crushes for they hadn't lasted long and Arnav had remained with her all through these infatuations. Apart from his felicitation on annual day in February 2006 for having scored good marks, she hadn't seen him again. Every once in a while she wished for some occasion to arise so that they could meet each other.
The occasion did come and it was much unexpected. One fine day, Khushi got a call from Priya asking her if she was interested in attending the school reunion. The question confused her because S.M. School had no tradition of arranging school reunions. Besides why now, after 3 years of passing out from school? But Priya was in no mood to reveal the details; the information provided by her was sparse. "Just check the school website for details; the event is on this Sunday. You might have received an invite on Facebook as well. RSVP on the same. Will meet you there; don't be late!"
Priya hadn't provided her with any answers nor had any of her other friends. At first she had thought of this as some kind of prank played on her. But the school website authenticated the actuality of the party. Further reading revealed that there would be students from five years i.e. those who had passed from 2004-2008. "Oh!" was all she could say when she got this bit of information. "Devi Maiya, aajkal aap meri kuch jyada hi sun rahe ho! Pehle G.S. medical college mein admission aur ab yeh! Aapka lakh lakh shukar hai! (Devi maya! Nowadays you are listening to my prayers a bit too well; first my admission in G.S. medical college and now this! Thanks a lot!)
