A familiar silence
Chapter 2 of 2
Khushi hearing what the doctor has to say watches him leave thanking him however his words leave Khushi feeling guilty. As she looks through the door that was partially open her husband eyes happen to clock with hers for a moment she does the usual thing diverting her sight. As she looks back at him talking to Aarav she knew there conflict before he had left Shaantivaan had played apart in his ill health.
As Khushi walks into the bedroom, to Arnav who was sat up in bed and Aarav who was sitting by his side, Aarav decides to intelligently make an excuse of having to do his homework and leaves the room with the rucksack he had bought along. Both of them knowing that his son had purposely done that to give them space don't really have a reason to stop him.
Once Aarav leaves the room, Arnav goes back to doing what he had intended and that was to get back to work. Pulling the bed covers aside Arnav puts his feet to the floor just as Khushi intervenes watching him pick up his phone from the side table, tie and blazer that hung over the headboard. "Doctor ne aapko aaram karne ko kaha hai."
Without looking towards Khushi going about adjusting his attire he promotes his good health in a very ASR tone. "I'm fine." Not expecting Khushi to raise her voice the way she does in response.
"BILKUL BHI THEEKH NAHIN HAI AAP!!" Arnav struck by that tone of voice that was ever so rare from his wife turns to look towards khushi and sees her instantly realize the way she had just spoken to him. Dropping her eyes shamefully she..lowers her tone of voice..but continues her words. arnav sees nothing but care and affection and upset in those eyes of hers
"..hote toe.. hote toe..hamare yaha aane par daate hame." But as arnav looked towards a distressed khushi..he wondered if she had ever thought of the possibility that he actually missed her..missed them. as arnav goes on to look at khushi who diverts her eyes from him in a combination of anger and resistance. It had been weeks since he had seen her heard her voice, standing in that yellow churidar dress, mangalsutra and sindhoor arnav felt a mix of feelings but it seemed as if she was hurt, and too angry to understand and maybe his ego was still in the way. Without responding to her words Arnav turns his expression back to the task at hand and continues to unroll the sleeves of his cuff-linked shirt slowly but the areas where the doctor had injected his arm multiple times cause him discomfort which was visible on his expression and that ever so slight sigh he gave out. Khushi never the less noticing his pain is quick to walk towards him. "Arnavji!!.."
As khushi closes the pace between herself and Arnav she lowers herself to the floor inorder to be at his knee level where his arm was rested. Looking at his arm that had been injected in multiple places, for drips, blood tests and everything else that was nessasary. The pain he would have gone through each time which each plastered area of his arm leaves khushi certain that he was in more pain than he let on. Very carefully unfolding the sleeve of his white shirt that was midd way across his forearm khushi..feels the need to express her feelings. doing so without looking up at him and concentrating on the folds of his shirt.
As arnav listens he begins to feel and hear as always a very heartfelt confestion from khushi.
"Ham maafi mangte hai.. Hamne joe khaha jo kiya..hame kabhi karna nahin chahiyey tha. Aap hamare pati hai, aapki baat na maan kar hamne aapka aapan kiya, aap ko chot pauchayi..is kadar ke.. is taanav ki vaje se aaj aapki yey haalat hai. Im sorry arnavji. Arnav looking down at khushi in a stunned silence watches her carefully draw the sleeve of his shirt..towards his wrist and fold it twice neatly so it didn't hang loose.
"Hamare liyey nahin, appne aap ke liyey nahin lekin Aarav ke liyey yey sab bhul kar apnne sehaad pein dhyan dijyey. Please." Not once had khushi looked up at him, into his eyes but as she moved to get up and walk out of the room and he addressed her - "Khushi.." There were tears in those eyes of hers.. trying to hide them from him khushi diverts the course of the conversation before leaving the room "Ham..kuch bana kar laate hai , tab tak aap aaram kijyey."
..
7:00pm It had been a whilst since she had left him, Aarav had already been up to the bedroom telling him his meal was really but he had said he would be down at the dinner table. Either he was still too annoyed to take any notice of her efforts and was avoiding her or something was wrong.. as khushi served aarav his dinner, she put out Arnavs plate at the table and for the third time asked Aarav if he was sure his farther had insisted on eating at the dinner table.
Before she could ask again Aarav repeated himself whilst tucking into his food. "10 mins..mom..!! dad said 10 mins its been like 5." It felt like much more than 5 mins to Khushi, her mind just didn't have any patience when he was ill, Maybe he had fallen unconscious again and with that she felt the need to check on him immediately.
Walking up to the room in an anxious state, finding the bedroom empty worries khushi even more until she hears the sound of the shower behind the washroom door running and feels a tad more relaxed. About to turn away, that reassurance wasn't enough for khushi..calling his name in the hope for a response..khushi walks closer to the washroom door when there is no reply first time around. "Arnavji!!!" Yet again getting no response, negative thoughts begin to cloud her mind further..what if he had lost sense of consciousness in the shower?.
Her mind unsettled in the most terrible way Khushi decides to enter the shower..knowing that her husband never locked the door. Under normal circumstances she would never dare of doing anything of the sort but this wasn't normal. She just wanted to make sure he was ok.
Walking into a steamy mist khushi hears the sound of the shower dominating..her voice as she calls out to him walking under the sprinkle of hot water, but there's no sign of him.
"Arnavji..!!!" her call out for him getting a little louder and more desprate to hear from him.just when khushi begins to panic..
She feels his presence, behind her..as she turns to her husband who is midd way through his shower khushi addressing him in a relived tonecircles her arms around his figure tightly, hiding her face into his chest. She was so glad to see him, all those things that were going on in her mind. She dreaded to think what she would have done if his health had slipped again. Arnav confused by what khushi was doing here, why she seemed so panicked..tries asking and then hearing her sobbing into his chest attempts to calm her, instinctively his hands circle her back softly trying to comfort her. "Khushi??" looking down at her petite figure in his arms it was as if something had scared her to death but her silence is what spoke the most. Arnav had figured out what had caused her to behave this way even before she had spoken
"Sshush khushi.." Still very much hidden in his embrace khushi lifts her expression up to him slowly as she explains her tears visible even with the shower running above them both.
"Muje laga ke aap.. hamne aapko aavas di aur aapne javab nahin diya.. hame laga ke aapko phir se khuch.. " Stopping her from going on as this was clearly upsetting her more arnav pulls Khushi back into his arms.. "its okay Khushi, I'm fine."
After a few minutes of them standing this way, khushi feeling at more ease now..steps away from her husbands posture and becomes more intuitive to the whole scenario. A little embarrassed at what had just happen..khushi scatters her eyes under Arnavs watch as she realizes that she had left aarav abruptly at the dinner table.
"Woh ..aarav hame neeche chalna chaiyey." Arnav nodding in acknowledgement of khushis words is left thinking about the extent to which khushi cared for him, loved him.
As khushi heads back downstairs conscious of aaravs possible questions and what her reply would be that becomes not much of an issue as she sees him entertained in front of a TV screen. Managing to avoid distracting him, khushi who was now dressed in her night dress, a plain white loose fitting dress carries her damp her over the side of one of her shoulder with the touches of her mangalsutra and sindhoor. Heading back to the dinning table..khushi picks up the containers of food and takes them into the kitchen to re-heat.
In the mean time..Arnav makes his way downstairs after his shower, looking a little weaker than usual dressed in a meginta colored jumper with casual tracksuit, his night attire his eyes initially look for khushi but fix upon aarav who has something to say.
"I think mom shouted at the maid.." Arnav who had never known his wife to do such a thing looks a little astounded "Really?, why?" Aarav who had switched to a football channel explains whilst not taking his eyes off the sceen. "For not looking after you properly, either that or shes just jealous." Arnav finding his sons comment amusing finds himself smiling for the first time in ages. Their humor amongst most other things was alike.
Both father and son look towards the maid who looks a little depressed as she heads towards them with her handbag. Her day of work had just ended, before she could leave it was formality to ask permission from the boss and he approves.
As Arnav and Aarav watch the maid leave feeling sorry for her as both of them knew exactly what it was like to feel the wrath of KKGRS. Khushi bringing into the dinning area the re-heated food begins to serve into arnavs plate as he takes a seat at the table.
Again that silence between the two of them is prominent, khushi ate silently and so did he, the only thing he mentioned was that he felt much better and he would be back to work as normal by tomorrow, something he knew she didn't approve of but she said nothing.
Later into the night as Khushi finishes clearing up in the kitchen, even though she could have left it for the maid in the morning khushi prefers to tidy up after herself. Not forgetting his medication she balances a glass of water in her hands as she walks into his room. Sitting at the edge of the bed..measuring his sugar level with one of those self test kits that were a day to day thing for him..khushi catches sight of him struggling as he fails to find a plaster for the thumb that he had just pricked in order to test his sugar. Khushi hated the way so much blood was involved with his illness. She hated the idea of him loosing blood on a daily basis but he was used to it. Picking up a plaster from the small plastic box that sat by his side, khushi peels of the clear plastic and arnav lets her encircle it over the thumb of his right hand adding a "thanks"as she goes to pick up his medication up from the bedside table whilst he figures out the rate of his sugar level . Passing the glass of water with accompanying tablet to him..as ever khushi wants to make sure hes alright. 'Theekh hai?" nodding a yes whilst taking his tablet, arnav watches khushi about to leave and stops her thinking about what aarav had said to him on the phone a few days back. "Khushi kaha jaa rahin ho?" "He wouldn't be able to bare the thought of her crying herself to sleep for another night.. if she was going to be upset he wanted to be there to comfort her no matter what things were like between them.
...
Lying beside him..yes there was distance between them and maybe things weren't totally out in the open but being beside her husband gave khushi a content that had been missing her life for days.
...Next morning and as ASR had decided he was fit to work, not even khushis dissaproval makes a difference to his decision. With him feeling a whole lot better and only a day or so till his work in Mumbai is complete khushi decides that there is no need for her and aarav here any longer and prepares to leave.
Khushi stood in her night attire looks through her clothes still In the travel case she had bought along as she asks her sons opinion as to what would best suit her today. Aarav couldn't care less sitting on the edge of the bed with what looked like some game console he wasn't paying much attention. "Hame aaj kya phena chahiyay, yey yah phir ye??" One of the saaris Khushi held up in front of the mirror was red and the other a royal blue. Just as Aarav is about to reply he sees his farther stood at the entrance of the room hinting towards the red, and like farther like son Aaarav agrees with him on purpose just to help his dad out, he wanted everything to be alright between his parents after all. "I think the red one."
Khushi seeing the reflection of her husband in the mirror knows that this was his opinion rather than Aarav's. For a moment she finds herself admiring that charm of her husband. He looked as ever handsome, especially in blue but that wasn't going to distract khushi picking up the blue saari instead of red she heads for the shower. Aarav and Arnav looking at one another take a disappointed shrug.
...
Just before Aarav and khushi are due to leave arnav who is looking for some of his paperwork before leaving for his meeting catches site of aarav sitting on the stairs alone playing with his game console still. With his rucksack packed aarav sitting in a red jumper looks the reflection of his farther only younger. Although arnav was going to be back in dehli in a day or so he still felt the need to say goodbye to his son. Dropping the file to aside, Arnav walks up to Aarav sat on one of the stairs and takes a seat beside him.
"I guess I'll see you in in a few days buddy.." nodding a yes aarav looks like he want to say something..and arnav could see that on his face. "Dad can I just say something.. " Arnav nods a yes.. as he watches Aarav put his game console down. "I was thinking.. I know I shouldn't have told mom about you being ill and that's why we came all the way here but aapne mom ke chehre par woh parishani dekhi, knowing that you are not well??" Arnav nods a yes, because he knew exactly what Aarav was talking about. "Wohi parishani Anjali bua ko hui hogi jab une yey pata chala ke unke husband bimar hai. It doest matter wether aap dono ek dusre se baat kar rahe ho ya nahin..she still loves you..like bua still loves her husband."
Arnav left speechless with how simply his son had put it and he was right. He had never seen things from her point of view, the point of view of a wife. No matter how bad things are you never stop caring, never stop loving and just like khushi had done for him..his di would have wanted to same for shyam, khushi was just helping her and he failed to understand that.
Thinking things trough, in his mind, he felt guilty for what he had put khushi through. As khushi walks into the lounge area with her case packed calling for aarav as there taxi was due..arnav watches khushi call out to aarav.
Before leaving his fathers side, aarav has one more thing to add, "Maybe shes wearing blue because..you are." Arnav looking down at his attire today, that blue and grey three piece.. he admires his sons intelligence. Getting up from his seated position arnav walks towards khushi who as ever fails to look directly at him.
"Ham chalte hai..driver bahar intaazar kar raha hoga..appna khyal rakhyeyga."
Arnav nodding yes Is taken back by his wifes nature to deal with so much yet say nothing. As khushi turns away..to leave.. Arnav feels the need to stop her.. he needed to get something off his chest.
"Khushi.."
khushi turning back hearing his voice.. knew that he wanted to say something. stepping back towards him..khushi waits for his words. Khushi i'm I'm sorr..---
Not letting him finish off his words for she never approved of him apologizing to her, putting her hand to the body of his suit where most people say heart resided..Arnav feels the warmth of her hand upon his chest, her honey comb eyes carrying the same look of love as it always did. "Ham jaante hai.. aapki khamoshi..kaafi hai Arnavji." Feeling a strange content and piece of mind now..arnav takes a step closer to khushi cupping her face in his hands he draws his lips up to her forehead and places a very soft gentle kiss.
The sound of the driver sounding the horn of the car as an sign that they were getting late..arnav allows khushi to part from him and leave.
...
Two days later when ASR is due home, Khushi excited at his homecoming had been smiling ever since she had woken up in the morning.
Checking the time again and again, khushi was getting impatient. Stood in front of her dressing table she perfects her look making sure she was dressed to his taste. She had picked that red saari she knew he liked her in, perfected her hair, bangles mangalustra, sindhoor even more than usual today. Seeing aarav walk into the room with the house phone, khushis smile forms even bigger.
"Aapke dad aagayay .?" Aarav stringing his words along for a bit watches his mother face turn from an excitement into uspet. "Actually unki urgent meeting aagayi.. so he had to cancel, sorry mom"
As soon as aarav walks out of the room, khushi disheartidly is about to leave the stool at the dressing table until she feels..a familiar touch hold her waist.
"Aarnavji..?" looking up into the mirror reflection khushis frown turns to a smile, her eyes carrying a certain glow as she lays eyes on her husband. He watched her with the same anticipation and smile until he sees her divert her gaces and the silence kicks in. Knowing full well that his wife was unhappy at the prank he had just played..he doesn't let that discourage him from showing his affection. Khushi trembles for a moment as she feels him move aside her hair and begin to place small, affectionate kisses on her neckline, his voice a seductive whisper . "Naaraz ho..?.."
"Khushi nods a no.." he knew she was lying. "Tumari yey khamoshi mein atchi tareeke se samaj ta hoon khushi." Khushi breaking out into a smile..couldn't help but feel embarrassed, amused by the way in which her husband was deploying very sensual and sweet tactics to make up to his wife.
