sam's heart began 2 pound very fast wen she saw d sigh... it was hand-lettered, Sam raised her eyes off from sigh to house. It was painted white but looked almost like blue in d shade of two tall oak trees.
Sam looked back at d sigh. then at d house. She heard sandy's words about d lady being a witch, and felt a tug-of-war inside her. What if she meant scary and mean and put a spell on her? the possibility gave sam a cold shiver.
But some feelings are bigger dan Fear :Love, longing Desire
she had a lump in her throat and couldn't shake it lose. her feet began to walk up d hill, and den she stated to run...Staring upward she saw a face at d window. She felt afraid but she couldn't stop now. Barefoot, she caught her toe on d rock in d yard and tumbled head over heels and skinned both her knees!

Kriya Ghai had been sitting at d kitchen table, water-color brush poised as she stared out d window @ d hummingbirds darting in and out of the trumpet vine. her fifteen year old cat "Snap!", sat on d table beside her, no less intent. kriya wanted to capture d hummingbird's essence, which she thought was really amazing ability to b purely still yet in constant motion all at d same time! whereas Snap just wanted to capture d bird n eat it.
Kriya really didnt know how she wud survive without Snap. The cat has been her constant companion through everything! Snap has gotten her through more Lonely nights dan she cud ever count. Sighing d love for her cat she saw hummingbirds dart away suddenly. Looking out of d window she saw a girl running up d hill.

"Snap, don't schools teach kids to read anymore?" Kriya asked her cat wondering weather d boys next door had stolen her sigh again!?
The cat spying d coming stranger sprang up d refrigeraton n peeked through d window. Kriya grabbed her panana hat so that she could look imposing nd stern, a split second before she saw d child fall on d rocks...!

Kriya ran outside d house the girl was crumpled on d rocks, trying to pick herself up. Her knees and her big toe were bleeding. Kriya hesitated for a moment , just long enough for d girl 2 look up at her. Her blue eyes were cavernous, flooded with pain, and d sight of them sent a current of unexpected, unfamiliar emotion through Kriya!!

"Are you okay?" Kriya asked and d girl nodded her head vigorously, and tears flew out of her eyes..!
"it's you! it's you!" d girl said, her voice thin and reedy...
"you're a reader?" kriya asked
"My mother knew you" d girl shooked her head n said
"Your Mother?"
"Sharon RaiprakashH" d girl said "dat was her name before she married my father"
"OH MY!" Kriya said softly. The name came from distant past. Memories swept in, Clear n as bright as sunshine, back to those days
"how is ron?" kriya asked
"She died" sam said
Oh! how could such a thing hv happened nd kriya not have known? Kriya stared into d girl's eyes and she swore she saw Ron or Sharon right over there...
Kriya reached out fr d little girl's hand n said "You'd better come inside"

After kriya cleaned d little girls hands nd knees and applied band-aids, she made coffee, bcuz dats what her mother Ron wud hv done... she set out Blue Bone China cups and a plate of lemon drop cookies. Then she and d girl --Sam-- sat down d table infront of d fireplace...

"your mom n i used to have tea parties right over here" kriya said

"When your house was blue?" Sam asked

"Yes" she answered
The child's gaze was avid, taking everything in. Kriya saw sams face nd knew d child was wondering where her mom had sat? what things she had seen.
The two sipped dere coffee's for a while. Kriya wanted to find d right words,, ,to comfort d child. She wanted 2 asked what hapoened 2 ron bt she felt afraid, strained dat she wud say something wrong..!
she held her teacup n waited fr sam to say something..finally sam finished her cookie n poleitly wiped her hands on d pink linen napkinnd looked up, she was twelve, thin nd had shoulder length hair she looked like her mom nd with her enomorous blue eyes.

"my mom told u were her best friend?" she said
"oh yes we were best, best friends!" kriya said
"really?" sam asked
"yeah, we were inseparable, Ron n I knew each other since we were 13. Her family had a bunglow since we were really young!" kriya said "we really got close... two of us two summers wid d length of two winters!" sam closed her eyes 2 listen 2 her words.. kriya knew she ha dheard dem be4... "did your mother told dat we borrowed dose lines from Christen Church?" kriya asked
"she told me..." sam said
"our phone bills were massive! we always used to finish our pocket money in our phone bills..!" kriya said wid joy "who's ur father? let me guess Kunal verma?" kriya asked
"no! was he mom's boyfriend?" sam asked
"umm... no bt she had a crush on him... den who?" kriya asked
"mom never told me! she told dat she always loved dad! n she kept it a secret from you! hawww... i said it.. sorry mom!" sam said looking up at d sky..
"secret? anyway who's ur dad?" kriya asked..
"swayam shekhawat" sam said
"OH MY GOD!! swayam?? he was my best friend!" kriya said
"u didnt knew?" sam asked
"actually i lost all d touch" kriya answered
"They fell in love here?" sam asked
"no, in mumbai...college...i suppose h9w did you find me? " kriya answered..
"my mom told u lived in blue house..!" sam said
"she didnt tell you my name?" kriya asked
"i forgot..!" sam said...
"what made u paint ur house not-blue??" sam asked
"let me see ur knees.." kriya said "u really skinned dem...!"
"dey're fine!" sam said

"so, where do you live now?" kriya asked happier dat she ws d one asking questions now..

"in Boston with rey.." sam answered

"r..rey? u m..mean r..reyaansh sing..ghania?" kriya stammered

"yaa..."

Silence rose n kriya found sams steady gaze on her. It wasn't so bad. but then kriya noticed dat she wasn't looking away, n she began to feel enclosed "the reason i painted my house" kriya said just so d child wud stop staring ":\was dat it had always been blue. Always, from d time i was born, And i started 2 think maybe if i changed my house color i would change...sumthings i didn't like. About... life. does dat make any sense at all?" kriya finished

Sam nodded gravely, n kriya saw her gaze shift down, to kriya's hand.

"u looking for rings?" kriya said "all d kids do?"

"did u lose one of dem in water?" sam asked

kriya smiled "just one, n i didnt lose it..!" she said

"didnt lose it?" sam asked

"I threw it in" kriya said

"but u look for it every morning" sam said

"no, i look for sea shells, and i like 2 swim before d sun comes up" kriya answered

"why do you go there before d sun rises?" sam asked yet again

kriya ws quiet "questions! questions! questions! how many questions u ask?" she said

"hmm...well, i should leave now its getting dark, m glad i met you!" sam said

"well, m very glad i met you!!" kriya answered

Sam started 2 walk towards d door kriya opened d door for her but suddenly d child turned wid a fierce expression...

"The reason i went to boston is a lot lyk why u painted ur house not-blue" sam said

"it is?"

sam nodded "Its beacause everything back in home is so d same. The same as it was wen mom was alive. The kitchen smells lyk her cooking d yard looks lyk her planting.She sat on d chairs. her shoes r still dere in closet. The... hairbrush she brushed my hair with everything is still dere!" sam squeezed her eyes shut tight.

Kriya knew wat pain she was facing... the pain was alive on her face sam whispered "she died an year ago.."

"Oh im so sorry sam!" kriya said

"its so hard 2 live where she lived. so, i left.." sam said

"sometimes dat helps.." kriya said

"bye" she said n left

"sam, kal bhi aaogi?" kriya asked she smiled nodded n left..

sam took off her shoes.. she heard voices inside d house "not again" she moaned she went inside..

sa:whats he doing here?

rey: he's your father, he came to see you come n meet him nicely

sw: hi darling. how're u?

sa: i want 2 dia, anything else?

rey: SAM! behave...

sa: i dont need 2 rey i hate dis man

sw: sweety u told rey u were going 2 beach we searched fr u all around where were you?

sa: i don't need to tell you..

rey: sam he came to take you back..

sa:NO! i will never ever go back... not wid you ever!

sw: please..

sa: rey u want me 2 go? am i a burden?

re: no no no sweetheart its not dat... its just..

sa: i won't go.. ever!

sw: how did u get hurt? n band-aid..where did u go?

sa: a friend of moms..

sw: sharon's?

sa: yes, i hv 1 mom dats it..

sw: please come wid me please!

sa: i dont know why u try..

n she left
