Chapter 63

Arnav watched Khushi polish off the last buttery warm croissant before leaning back with a large happy smile on her face. He took another sip of his coffee, watching her over the rim of the mug. It was time to return to their real world and it was time to break this news to her he thought to himself as he placed his coffee cup down on the table. Arnav leaned forward and placed his forearms on his knees, lacing his fingers together, 'Khushi, are you still in pain?' he asked quietly, 'tell me the truth.' While it was somewhat uncomfortable having this conversation, Khushi truthfully shook her head, 'the hot bath helped and if I have some more painkillers I think I'll be fine Arnav,' she answered honestly. Arnav nodded, 'Good. And you'll tell me if it gets worse and not better?' Khushi nodded and tried smiling to reassure him.

Arnav looked at Khushi quietly for several seconds before speaking, his intense and serious gaze still had the capacity to make her nervous. Arnav took a deep breath, 'I know that ordinarily a couple would go away on their honeymoon after the wedding, but we can't do this Khushi, not yet any way,' he said quietly as looked at her carefully to read her expression. 'Are you ok with this Khushi?' So this was what was worrying him, Khushi thought with a big silent sigh of relief. Khushi stood up and walked around the coffee table and took a seat next to him on the couch. She took his large hand in hers, 'Arnav, there's always a time and place for everything and if you think that the time for a honeymoon isn't right now, then I trust you. I'm absolutely ok with this. Besides going later means that we have another break to look forward to,' she said as her squeezed his hand. Arnav nodded. With one issue resolved, Arnav squared his shoulders as he turned his body to face her; it was time to broach the next topic.

Khushi watched as Arnav's expression changed yet again and she instantly recognised a shift in his energy. His voice was steady and calm but there was ASR's business-like efficiency when he spoke, 'Khushi while I was downstairs, I called Aman to check in and make sure everything is ok on that end.' Worry instantly appeared in Khushi's eyes. Arnav smiled as he squeezed her hand, 'Relax Khushi, everything is fine. They are all arrived back safely in Delhi last night and Akash drove Babu-ji, Aunty, Bua-ji and Payal home.' Khushi nodded in relief as Arnav continued. 'There are a few things that I need to talk to you about. I've spoken to Aman and Nandini and they are preparing a media statement in relation to our wedding. Nandini said that she has spoken to her contacts and the media doesn't appear to be aware of the fact that you and I got married at night. I want to make sure that the announcement comes from us and isn't a leak. So, the plan is that you and I will release a joint official statement to the press tomorrow morning.' Khushi nodded silently as her heartbeat began to gradually increase. Arnav continued, 'Khushi, before this the press announcement is made, I need to tell some key people so that they are aware of the news before it becomes public knowledge so I've asked Aman to arrange a dinner party for this evening at Shantivaan. AR Corp's Board of Directors, Senior Executive Team and some of our key business partners have been invited and I'd like to introduce you to them,' he said. Khushi looked slightly perplexed, 'Arnav, I already met all these people,' she said with some confusion. Arnav couldn't help but smile at her innocence as he looked down at their joined hands as he moved to interlace his fingers with hers, 'Khushi, you may have met them before but this evening they will be meeting you as my wife,' he said huskily as looked into her eyes.

Khushi flushed with embarrassment as she silently chided herself. She should have known what Arnav meant - for heaven's sake he was after all the Arnav Singh Raizada, multi-billionaire and the Chief Executive Officer of one of the biggest companies in the country. Of course it was going be news when he got married! Khushi tried very hard to swallow as an extremely sudden and serious case of nervousness overcame her as she forced a smile on her face. Despite the surreal fairytale like events leading to the wedding, suddenly it hit her; this was all very real. She had married Arnav Singh Raizada, she was now a part of his world and no she had no clue what was expected of a CEO's wife. Khushi tired to suppress that horrible feeling of her breakfast making its way back up her throat as she forced a smile on her face.

As Arnav stared at Khushi, it amazed him how in such a short space of time he had become so adept at reading her emotions. With just one look he could read her fears and her worries as clearly as if she'd spoken them. Right now, even though she was trying very hard to hold that fake smile, Arnav could see a frightened and nervous Khushi in front of him.

As Khushi fought the wave of panic overcoming her, she remembered Arnav's promise to her 'I promise that in me, you will always have someone you can talk to...about anything, at anytime.' The smile disappeared and she took a deep breath as she looked into Arnav's deep brown eyes; he made her a promise, but the onus to act on it when required was hers. 'Arnav you said that I can talk to you about anything,' she began hesitantly as Arnav's expression instantly softened as he nodded, Khushi continued 'I'm...I'm scared, I mean, I'm a little nervous about this. I mean, I know you're a big deal and I thought I was on the right track. I mean, I sometimes forget that you are Arnav Singh Raizada... and I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do or how I'm supposed to act in front of all those people' she said as she looked down and began knotting the belt of her robe as her voice trailed off and she struggled not to stumble over her words.

Arnav raised Khushi's chin so that she was forced to look at him, 'Right now you are nervous because you think that you know me, but you don't know me right?' Khushi nodded as Arnav continued 'Khushi, we might be married, but don't forget that we are still getting to know each other. I can understand why this is hard for you but Khushi think of it this way, you probably know Arnav Singh Raizada a lot more than you realise because you've worked with him for over 12 months. In that time you were absolutely proficient in dealing with him and those around him. The only difference now is that you are not his PA but you are married to him and all you need to do is be yourself just like before,' he said quietly. She still didn't look convinced. Arnav took a deep breath, 'Khushi, I'm nervous too... I've never felt like this about someone before. Relationships and love was something that I didn't do so this is new for me and I'm trying to work it out along the way. We'll both need to adjust to fitting into each other's worlds and lives. I suppose what I'm trying to say is that there is no right way or wrong way to get to know each other or to do this. There is only our way which will be whatever we make it. We just have to guide each other and tonight you have nothing to worry about because I will be with you every step of the way,' he said with a firm edge of complete reassurance in his voice, his gaze unwavering.

His words and reassurance were exactly what she needed and Khushi flung herself at Arnav and wrapped her arms around his neck. He held her close and wrapped his arms around her back. 'You always know how to make feel better. I don't even know why I was worried Arnav, you have and always will guide and protect me and I should have remembered what you said - our love is the constant and that's what I have to remember... I love you, I love you so much,' she whispered fiercely into his neck. Arnav bend his head pressed his lips to hers. The kiss was sweet and far too short. Arnav pulled back as he spoke, 'we need to leave for Delhi by mid-day. Nani said that there are some sort of welcoming ceremonies for you that have to take place when we get home.' Khushi nodded excitedly as she thought of the Graha Pravesh that would be conducted for her. Arnav smiled as he pulled her back into his arms, 'I don't think you've given me a proper good morning kiss yet Mrs Raizada, I think you better correct that,' he said with a cheeky smile and a naughty glint in his eyes.

=============================

Their arrival at Shantivaan had been marked with a lot of excitement, pomp and ceremony. Nani had invited the Gupta family for the Graha Pravesh and Shashi and Garima watched proudly but emotionally as their daughter entered her matrimonial home for the first time as a glowing bride. It was apparent to everyone in attendance just how deeply Arnav and Khushi were in love with each other; neither could keep their eyes of the other and there was sense of protectiveness that they both emitted for each other as they completed the required rituals hand in hand. Shashi couldn't help but admire his daughter. As a newly wedded bride, Khushi was glowing and her beautiful smile only added to her aura.

Amid laughter and teasing from the younger members of both families, Arnav and Khushi were led to the seating area. NK piped up, 'Di, I think you better get a black coffee for Nanaav, he looks like he hasn't had much sleep...was it very cold there?' he asked innocently, but his eyes twinkling with naughtiness. Arnav gave NK a look to warn him only to hear his brand new saali speak up, 'NK-ji, I think jeeja-ji was too busy keeping my sister warm... hence no sleep you see,' whispered Payal conspiratorially as Khushi exchanged a glance with Arnav and turned bright red. Nani cleared her throat as she bit back her own laughter; if Arnav was anything like his Nana then Deviyaani was certain that Khushi wouldn't have had a wink of sleep all night.

The ring finding game was played next and Arnav ended up winning much to Khushi's secret delight. As everyone settled back to enjoy tea and snacks, Arnav told the family about the media plan just as Aman arrived and discretely took a seat next to Anjali. Deviyaani Raizada immediately expressed concerns about the Gupta family's safety and suggested that if Shashi thought it appropriate, then they could all move into the villa inside the Shantivaan estate this would ensure that they would all be protected from the expected media onslaught. At first Shashi politely declined Deviyaani-ji's offer, but when Arnav came and sat beside him and asked him to re-consider not only for safety reasons, but also because it would make Khushi happy, Shashi Gupta had no choice but to say yes to his new son-in-law.

An hour later, as the family chatted and discussed arrangements for the Gupta's move, Arnav discretely led Khushi to his bedroom at Shantivan. Just as they came to his door, Arnav swung Khushi around and swept her up in his arms. Khushi gasped as she instinctively clutched his shoulders, 'Arnav...what are you doing, they'll see us?!' she whispered breathlessly. Arnav gave her one of his cheeky but very self confident smiles, 'I checked with your Google-ji and apparently its tradition for the groom to carry his bride across the threshold because it's symbolic of the groom stealing his bride and whisking her away from her family and into a new life with him. So that's what I'm doing... stealing you from them,' he said huskily as he rubbed his nose against hers and walked through the doors and then slowly set her back on her feet just in front of his large bed.

Arnav stood less than a foot in front of her, one of his strong hands settled on her waist as he watched her looking around his room with curiosity. It struck Arnav that this wasn't his room anymore and that Khushi would now own it just as much as he did. He reached over with his free hand and tucked her hair behind her ear, 'I wasn't expecting to bring you back with me after this weekend, so I haven't had a chance to clear some of my stuff to make room for your things. Nani said that Aunty and Payal had brought some of your things with them today so make yourself at home Khushi. In any case, I think we have the most important matter already sorted out.' When Khushi looked at him in slight confusion, Arnav he smiled at her as he leaned closer to her brushing his lips against her ear, 'the bed,' he whispered. Khushi suddenly found herself slightly breathless the vivid memories from last night raced though her mind and she had to clear her throat before she could speak whilst sternly telling herself that she was not going to blush and that the heat on her face was just…well…just hot air blowing in from the outside.

Arnav watched the red colour stain her cheeks and he knew what association she now made with the word bed. He leaned close and kissed her cheek, 'I think I know what you are thinking about Khushi,' he said as he leaned close again and brushed his mouth against hers. 'Me? No I'm not thinking about anything important,' she said quickly. 'It must be important,' he said as he placed tiny kisses along her jaw, 'because you were blushing.' Khushi shook her head, 'I wasn't thinking about anything,' she murmured. 'Liar,' he said his voice low and seductive. 'Khushi, if you don't want to tell me what you were thinking, then maybe you'd like to hear what I'm thinking.' Looking into his eyes Khushi knew instantly where his mind was as he traced her lips with his eyes. She held her breath as he lowered his head and brushed his mouth against hers and he kissed her slowly, deeply and thoroughly, exploring her mouth in a way that left her breathless. When he raised his head, Khushi hoped he wasn't going to ask her anything because her head was spinning and she didn't have access to a single coherent thought.

Arnav slowly and reluctantly pulled back from Khushi. As much as he enjoyed kissing and teasing her; there was another reason her had brought her up here. He took her hand and led her to the edge of the bed and motioned for her to take a seat before he followed. 'Khushi, there something I need to talk to you about. Actually, it's more a suggestion for you than anything else,' he said, 'I think it might be a good idea for you to call Amina and let her know what your decision is; it's not wise to keep her dangling particularly as you need to negotiate your terms of this arrangement. I also think you should let her know that you and I are married just as a matter of courtesy because the last thing I want is for her to withdraw her offer of funding for Jaleebi Junction because of some sort of perceived conflict of interest because of your association with AR Corp,' he said quietly.
Khushi thought about it for a few moments before nodding. Arnav took her hand in his, 'Remain firm on your position and don't let her bully you into any conditions you aren't happy with. This is a negotiation and the aim is for both you and her to be absolutely satisfied with the terms of agreement before you sign on the dotted line.' Khushi nodded. She could do this. She would do this she thought as she took a deep breath. Arnav smiled and cupped her cheek, 'I'll be waiting outside by the pool. Take your time and don't rush yourself, ' he instructed as he stood up and placed a kiss her forehead before leaving her alone in the big room.

Khushi fished out her phone from her handbag and then unzipped her suitcase and pulled out the file that she and Arnav had worked on together. After taking Devi Maiya's name and sending up a prayer for strength, courage and success, Khushi dialled Amina Rizwi's number.

======================================

One hour later, Khushi pressed the call end button on her phone and slowly placed the mobile phone down on top of her file. She walked to the sliding door and slid it open before slowly making her way to where Arnav was. He was sitting on a dark grey outdoor wicker chair and was deep in concentration as he read something on his laptop. It was only when her shadow fell against him that he swung his head up to look at her. He stared at her, his dark intense eyes narrowing as he waited for her to speak. Khushi instantly noticed that his muscles had tensed and his breathing had quickened as he raised his eyebrows as if to ask 'and?' There was only one response Khushi could manage; she smiled and nodded.

'I have funding to go ahead with Jaleebi Junction in Delhi,' she said almost in a whisper.

Arnav let out the breath that he had been holding; he had negotiated countless multi-million dollar deals and hadn't felt half as nervous as he waited for Khushi. He wasn't on edge because he doubted her skills, but because he knew just how much Khushi wanted to make this dream a reality. And now she had done it. He stood up slowly as he bridged the short distance to where Khushi stood. He could clearly see the after effects of the adrenaline rush; her eyes were wide open, her face was slightly flushed and he could actually see the vibration of her pounding heart. He took her shaking hand in his as he looked into her eyes, 'relax Khushi, you've done it,' he said with a smile. Arnav watched as Khushi took a deep breath and she placed her other hand on top of their joined finger, her eyes were bright and full of excitement as she spoke, 'I can't believe it Arnav, I was so nervous!! But once I started, I just kept thinking about what you said about making sure I was happy with the terms, so I told Amina that I wanted the funding but Jaleebi Junction had to be based in Delhi. At first, she said no and my heart sank, but then I remembered how you always take a minute to think before you speak, so I did that and then I told her about the research we had done and quoted all those numbers and metronotromical models that you taught me.' Arnav bit his lip as he smiled to himself and didn't correct her. Khushi continued, 'I think Amina was really impressed because she said that it was clear that I had done my homework. Anyway, I have to email her all those projections now and she said she'll courier the contract tomorrow and I should have the funds before the end of the week,' she said excitedly.

Arnav smiled as he watched her face light up with the joy and thrill of being one step closer to her dream. 'Congratulations Khushi. As your mentor, I'm very pleased to see you strategically achieving the targets you've set for yourself. You haven't let the setbacks affect your drive to succeed and you've never lost sight of your goal. The task isn't over yet, but yes, you should enjoy this because it is a big win.' His compliment broadened her smile even more. Arnav stepped closer and cupped her face in his palms as he stared deeply into her eyes, his own gaze was intense, his voice deep, sincere and very husky, 'As your partner...your husband, I'm so proud of you Khushi. When I first met you, I had no idea that beneath that quiet facade was such a strong fighter. Not once have you compromised on your principles, your honesty or integrity. You've done this absolutely your way and on your terms and have come out on top even when I've thrown some major challenges your way. You've taught me that you can be a successful business person without comprising on your beliefs. You inspire me Khushi, you really do,' he said softly. Khushi shook her head as she leaned up and cupped his face and pulled him down so that his forehead rested against hers, 'No Arnav, you are my inspiration. I'm not being modest or taking anything away from this achievement, but I've managed to do this today because of you. Arnav, you may have started as my mentor, but along the way you've become my teacher, my guide, my strength. This might have started as my dream, but with you by my side - this is as much your win as it is mine,' Khushi whispered. Arnav stared into her eyes and smiled 'our win,' he said confidently as he suddenly clasped her around the waist and swung her up in his arms, spinning them both until they were both laughing.

Eventually Arnav stopped and let Khushi slide down until her feet touched the paved floor. He pulled her close. She was like a drug that he couldn't get enough of. Khushi closed her eyes and concentrated on the feel of his lips against hers. Soon what began as an act of love and affection deepened as Arnav pulled her closer and sank his fingers into her hair, cupping the back of her head to hold her steady as his tongue danced with hers. Eventually they both had to break apart as their lungs burned for oxygen. As they both tried to steady their breathing, Arnav noticed a flash of worry on her face, 'Khushi?' he prompted gently.

As she looked into Arnav's eyes, her happiness was suddenly overshadowed by a cloud of concern. 'Arnav, other than you, no one else knows about my business idea. You support me, but what if someone objects to me doing this? I mean now, it's not just about my family alone...your family is also my family now.' Khushi asked with serious concern evident in her eyes. Arnav's eyes narrowed, 'Khushi, why would anyone object? I have no doubts that babu-ji will support you and as far as my side of the family is concerned, Nani has always supported Di through her studies and professionally. I know she'll do the same for you. Besides, I'm ok with the idea and you want to do this, so why do we even need to have this discussion in the first place,' he said flatly. Khushi shook her head, 'No, Arnav I can't just assume that I can just do as I please. I owe it to Babu-ji, Amma, Nani-ji and all the other members of the family to ask them before I do this. Ask not necessarily for permission but for their blessings,' she said quietly.
As Arnav studied her, he knew that once Khushi had made a decision, then there was no changing her mind. There was no way he was going to let her lose the funding which she had fought so hard for. He grabbed her hand in his and pulled her towards the door. She stopped him, 'What are you doing Arnav?' she asked in panic-stricken voice. Arnav turned around, his face was stern, his voice very low, 'we are going to do exactly that, talk to the family.' His tone and narrowed gaze made it clear to Khushi that this wasn't a negotiation.
Hello lovelies
My life is spinning on crazy at the moment. There's a lot happening for me all at the same time, hence the delay in updates. Anyway I hope you enjoy this chapter and yes before someone says it (and I know they will!) - I ended on a cliffhanger!
