Khushi is extremely upset watching everyone else perform the KC rituals, she heads to her room and remembering the words of her mother about the importance of keeping the fast for the right man, she performs the rituals for Arnav. Much to her surprise, Arnav walks in through the window. He breaks her fast and they two have a much needed talk about the turmoil of the past few days. Arnav apologizes to Khushi and gives her his mother's payals that he had found in Purani Haveli to convince her that he wasn't leaving her ever. Finally as the KC gift from the husband to the wife, he returns Khushi's engagement ring to her, proposing her to marry him.
Continuing from there 😊
Chapter 22 Decisions Decisions
Scene 1
Despite having expected the question that was to follow his gesture, Khushi looks shocked. She stares at Arnav's 6 foot frame kneeling on the ground, holding her ring up to her, looking at her with hopeful eyes. Her breathing hikes up again and she suddenly feels a lump in her throat the size of a golf ball. She had never been proposed to before, and the enormity of it taking place now renders her speechless. She looks from the ring to Arnav's vulnerable face and all she wants to do is sweep down into his arms and hug him really hard. She extends her hand towards him, both of them having forgotten to breathe that very instant -
"KHUSEEE?" Garima's voice accompanied by loud knocks make both Khushi and Arnav snap their heads to stare at the door in alarm. Khushi's extended hand suddenly forgets where it was going and pushes Arnav away making him land on his back on the hard floor with a hissed "What the-?"
Khushi immediately jumps up from the bed, looking extremely flustered. "Shhh!!" she hisses back at him admonishingly. "Amma darwaje pe khadi hain!" she urgently whispers. "Haan Amma! Aate hain!" she yells back in response. Then she hastily proceeds towards her darkened closet in the corner, in a bid to start changing her clothes. She was still dressed in the red saree and her mother obviously couldn't see her this way!
Arnav is sitting on the floor frowning at her direction, not being able to make out anything in the darkness that the nook of her room is engulfed in. He can only hear faint shuffling. "Uhm, Khushi?" he ventures tentatively, reminding her that he had asked her something moments ago. Khushi immediately gasps in response and comes out of the darkness holding her head in her hands.
"Arnavji!! Aap yahin hain!" she exclaims as if remembering his presence. "Hey Devi Maiyya!! Amma aur Buaji ne aapko yahan aise iss waqt dekh liya na to hum dono ka bharta ban jayega," she whispers panickingly. She walks to him and with a tug on his arm she pulls him on to his feet. Arnav only has a moment to realise the strange mix of apparel she is wearing - a red petticoat at the bottom and a white kurti on the top. He chuckles in amusement at her appearance
Khushi narrows her eyes, misreading his expression for laughing at her comment. She places her hands firmly on his chests and pushes him with all her might back to the window sill from where he had jumped in not too long ago. Arnav's expression changes to that of utmost disbelief. From romance a moment ago to being kicked out of her room in the next? How the hell did things get here? Unbelieveable!
"Khusee bitiya! Darwaja khol na, itni der kaahe lag rahi hai?" Garima's insistent call makes Khushi even more agitated.
"Jaiye Arnavji! Please hum haath jodte hain," Khushi says imploringly again shoving him onto the window sill. Arnav has no option as her hands keep pushing him, so he climbs onto the sill ready to jump out.
"Khushi, par tumne mere sawaal ka jawaab-" Arnav' enquiry gets cut midway as Khushi hisses at him impatiently, "Hum uss bare mein baad mein baat karenge, Arnavji. Abhi ke liye aap jaiye please!!" And a final shove at his back makes Arnav jump and land on the earth below with a faint thump. He gets up and quickly brushes off his jersey and pants, cursing to himself. Then without another look at Khushi's window, he angrily starts walking towards his car that he had parked outside the colony.
"Arnavji!" Khushi's urgent call makes him stop in his tracks and turn around. He sees her leaning out of the window, looking at him with a small smile on her face. Arnav's irritation starts dissipating instantly. "Aane ke liye shukriya," she says earnestly and then shyly adds, "aur... hum bhi... I love you too Arnavji!" and with that she quickly disappears behind the darkness of her room again. Arnav turns around, shaking his head but his lips now curved up in a big smile, his heart threatening to explode with the happiness he was feeling, and resumes walking towards his car.
Khushi changes her clothes in record time and quickly removes all the jewellery visible to her eye. Then taking a deep breath and replacing the look of wild panic on her face with a sleepy one, she swings open the double doors of her room. But there is no one standing there. Her fake sleepy looks disappear as she genuinely looks confused now. She had heard her Amma calling her, hadn't she? She takes a tentative step out of her room and the yummy aroma of poori and alu sabji reaches her nose.
She inhales deeply, her confusion getting replaced by a dreamy one instead and her stomach starts rumbling loudly suddenly reminding her that she hadn't eaten anything since morning. She quickly walks to the dining table where her Buaji and Amma were sitting and eating dinner. Khushi pulls out a chair and sits down, eyeing the alu poori's with absolute glee. Buaji looks at her confusedly.
"Arre Nandkishore! Tum to soye rahi thi na Parmeswari?" Buaji asks, just as Khushi puts the first morsel of food inside her mouth. Khushi freezes and looks at Buaji who is staring at her perplexed and then at Garima who was watching her with a small smile on her face. "Tab hoo to Garima ne tumka bulaya to hum use mana kare rahi ki Sankadevi ko sone do," Buaji adds. Khushi gulps down her food.
"Haan, woh kya hai na Buaji, humein neend to lag rahi thi, par phir humein yaad aaya ki..." Khushi runs her brain wondering what excuse she could come up with, "... ki aapne aaj alu poori banai hai!" Khushi happily exclaims. "Aur Buaji ne alu poori banai ho aur hum na khayein, aisa kaise ho sakta hai, hai na Buaji?" she asks a thoroughly confused looking Buaji who nods half heartedly, wondering when had she told her niece about that night's dinner menu.
[Arnav's car]
To say Arnav is happy would probably be the understatement of the century. It feels like his insides were inflating into a huge balloon. He's smiling! For the first time, his face, his eyes, his lips are all expressing his immense thrill of whatever had happened that night. Well, apart from him getting thrown out of the window, obviously. But she talked to me! And I broke her fast! And she accepted Maa's payals! And she said she loved me too! If only Khushi's mother had not disturbed them during that instant, the night'd have ended on just the perfect note.
Arnav hits the speed dial and calls up Khushi. He is getting impatient to know her answer now. He knows she said they'd talk later, but she hadn't specified what the later was. Khushi's phone rings for the entire 30 seconds before the automated voice responds "I'm sorry, the number you're tryin is currently not responding." Arnav rolls his eyes. "Yeah, I gathered that much. Thank you!" He mutters to his phone. Then he hits redial. But, he again hears the same message after another 30 seconds of the phone's ringing. She must be talking to Aunty right now, Arnav thinks to himself and decides to call her up once he reaches home.
[Gupta House]
Her stomach filled up with the scrumptious dinner, Khushi bids an animated goodnight to her family members before bounding back to her room for the night.
"Yii Sankeswari kab sanak jaat kuch pata hi nahin chaalat hai," Buaji mutters keeping the utensils in the sink to be washed, obviously referring to the change in Khushi's behaviour from earlier.
Once inside her room and the door locked firmly behind her, Khushi switches off the light of her room. She inspects the dimly lit space, sweeping her gaze from her bed to her closet to the window sill and back to her bed. She slowly walks to her bed, her heart thudding unnaturally fast as she remembers how the night had unfolded. He had come, he really had come to break her fast. Khushi feels a light feeling in the pits of her stomach as she remembers the goosebumps that had erupted when she had heard his voice near the window.
He really was here in the room. She sits down on her bed and crosses her legs, remembering how he had held her in his arms, how he had confessed his insecurities to her. Subconcsiously, her gaze falls to her ankles, where Arnav's mother's payals were now entwined with her own mother's; two last physical entities binding the memories of their beloved mothers that she had now been entrusted with. Khushi feels a surge of love for Arnav course through her body again, feeling touched with his gesture all over again.
Then her gaze falls on the ground at something glinting in the light. She scoops down and picks up her engagement ring in surprise. Arnav must have dropped it when she had so unceremoniously thrown him out of her room; Khushi giggles slightly at the memory. Then, still holding the ring between her fingertips, she lies down on her side, looking up at the ring shining in the light by her bedside. He had proposed to her. She loved him, that she knew but this was so complicated. She had gone through all the pre-wedding rituals once already but then her wedding broke. So would she again have to go through the same things again? And more importantly, shouldn't her family have a say in this too? She'd have to tell her Amma and Buaji about this as would Arnav to his family. So how would things go from here?
Feeling very confused, Khushi slowly slipped the ring into her ring finger and felt a content smile creeping onto her lips. This felt right. This felt good. This felt complete. But then her smile faded again. Then she takes the ring out and wears it in the ring finger of her right hand instead. Humein iss bare mein ache se sochna hoga. Ye ab sirf hamari marzi ki baat nahin hai, and with that thought, Khushi falls asleep.
She doesn't realise when her phone indicates it is switching off tune due to exhausted battery.
[Raizada Mansion, much later]
Arnav is seen walking inside the darkened house, holding his phone and trying Khushi's number again. He looks dismayed when the IVR tells him that Khushi's phone is now switched off. Abhi to ring ho raha tha. Why is her phone off now? He wonders desperately. Then he notices the lights Anjali's room still on. He checks the time on his phone and frowning, changes direction to go to her room instead.
Anjali is sitting by the poolside, resting her entire frame on the back of her recliner, her eyes closed. The moonlight reflecting on the ripples of the water, are bathing her face with a faint blue colour and she's closed her eyes, a sad expression on her face. Arnav slowly walks from behind.
"Di?" he murmurs. Anjali opens her eyes and turns slightly to see Arnav looking at her worriedly. She immediately smiles at him.
"Chotey! Aao," she beckons him to sit next to him.
"Di, aap abhi tak soye nahin? Aap yahan bahar thand mein kyun baithe ho?" he asks, his eyebrows scrunching together in a concerned frown. Anjali serenely smiles at him.
"Ab agar hamare bhai bina bataye kahin chale jayenge to humein chinta nahin hogi?" she says teasingly. Arnav shakes his head exasperatedly.
"Aapko apni tabiyat ka khayal rakhna chahiye Di. Main to pehle bhi bahut baar der se ghar aaya hun," Arnav counters, unable to keep the irritation out of his voice. Anjali lets out a deep breath.
"Tum Khushiji se milne gaye the na?" she suddenly asks making Arnav look at her in astonishment.
"Haan," he finally replies. "Usne fast rakha tha," he adds as if that was answer enough for his motives to go to Khushi. Anjali smiles again, relating what Aakash had told her earlier that evening to Arnav's words, realising that his brother had gone to break Khushi's fast. Brother and sister sit in companionable silence watching the ripples of the water on the pool surface.
"Khushi said she loves me," Arnav says after a long silent moment and Anjali looks at him, surprised to hear the slight break in his voice. He too tears his gaze away from the water surface and looks at Anjali, nodding his head to reiterate his words. Anjali immediately hugs Arnav.
"Oh Chotey!" she eclaims happily. "Hum jaante the!" she whispers and then withdraws from the hug, resting her hands on Arnav's cheeks. Both the siblings are slightly teary eyed with the happiness of the news. "Hum jante the ki tumhari koshish ek na ek din Khushi ji ko zaroor mana legi," she gushes gently wiping the tear away from Arnav's eye. "Tumhare pyaar ne Khushiji ki nafrat ko hara hi diya."
Anjali's words make Arnav remember their conversation many days ago sitting by the swing in Purani Haveli when he had returned from the hospital, completely broken and thinking he had lost Khushi forever. "Hum tumhare liye bahut khush hain Chotey." Anjali smiles at Arnav, all traces of her previous sadness having disappeared like a whiff of smoke. Arnav bows his head, the happiness making him feel light headed all of a sudden.
"Let's get you to bed Di," Arnav says getting up from the recliner and extending his hand towards Anjali so that he could take her to her room and make her sleep comfortably. She carefully gets to her feet, holding the swell of her pregnant belly and awkwardly makes her way to her bed.
Before sleeping, Arnav tries Khushi's number one more time. When greeted again with "The number you're trying to call is switched off," he gives up and falls into a restless sleep.
[Gupta House, Next morning]
Khushi walks into the living room stretching her arms, yawning widely. Buaji is perched on the chair next to the dining table as usual, her glasses on the bridge of her nose, scanning through the day's newspaper. The nurse was already there, sitting in the courtyard with her Bauji, their therapy sessions in full swing. Garima was talking to someone on the phone. Khushi sleepily walks to her mother and wraps her arms around her, making Garima jump in surprise.
"Oho! Khusee, tum to humka dara hi dee," she says admonishgly. "Acha hua tum uth gayi. Lo, apni jeeji se baat karo. Payal ka phone aya hai," Garima hands over the receiver of the landline to Khushi and walks away to prepare the breakfast.
"Hello jeeji?" Khushi groggily says into the mouthpiece.
"Khushi! Kaisi ho tum?" Payal's concerned voice comes from the ear phone.
"Neend mein," Khushi replies, rubbing her eyes. Payal laughs at the other end, amused at Khushi's words.
"Hamara matlab, tumhara mann to theek hai na abhi? Amma bata rahi thi ki kal raat Karwachauth ki pooja chalte waqt tum thodi si dukhi lag rahi thi?" Payal asks, the concern back in her voice.
Kal raat... Khushi... Vrat khatam nahin karogi?... i admit khidki se andar aana is a lot difficult than it looks... you look beautiful Khushi... I am so sorry Khushi... Ye tumhare liye hain... Kya tum mujhse shaadi karogi Khushi?...
Khushi suddenly gasps out loud, making Buaji and Garima stare at her direction curiously. All traces of sleep had disappeared from Khushi's eyes which were now wide open with the recollection of the events of last night. "JEEJI!" she suddenly exclaims into the phone. "Jeeji, humein tumse bahut zaroori baat karni hai," Khushi mutters urgently. Payal raises her eyebrows.
"Haan bol na. Kis bare mein baat karni hai?" she enquires. Khushi peers around her warily and then cups her hand on the mouthpiece.
"Humein Arnavji ke bare mein baat karni hai. Par hum yahan ghar pe nahin baat kar sakte hain," Khushi murmurs as quietly as she can. Payal smiles victoriously at the other end.
"To phir, tum Shantivan aa jao. Hum yahan pe baat kar lenge," she replies matter-of-factly.
"Nahin!" Khushi immediately retorts. She realises it being Sunday, there was a good chance of Arnav being at home. And she didn't want to face him, without having her head cleared of all her doubts first. She needed to meet her sister somewhere else. "Jeeji, tum humein ek ghante mein Chandni chowk par milo. Hum baat bhi kar lenge aur diwali ke liye kapdon ki kharidari bhi kar lenge." Payal's smile widens. It had been a long time since the two of them had gone out shopping. It would be a nice change from the usual hum drum of Shantivan.
"Theek hai Khushi. Ek ghante mein Chandni Chowk ke metro station ke paas milte hain," Payal confirms and disconnects the call. Khushi rushes to the bathroom to get ready, ignoring Garima's summons to drink her tea which was now sitting cold on the dining table.

"That is why when Garima was calling her, I told her to let you sleep in peace," Buaji adds. Khushi gulps down her food.
"Yeah buaji, actually I was sleeping but then I remembered that..." Khushi runs her brain wondering what excuse she could come up with, "... that you have prepared alu poori for dinner!" Khushi happily exclaims. "And Buaji if you prepare alu poori, how can I NOT eat it, right?" she asks a thoroughly confused looking Buaji who nods half heartedly, wondering when had she told her niece about that night's dinner menu.

"You should take care of your health Di. I have returned home late before too, a number of times," Arnav counters, unable to keep the irritation out of his voice. Anjali lets out a deep breath.
"You had gone to meet Khushiji right?" she suddenly asks making Arnav look at her in astonishment.

"Sleepy," Khushi replies, rubbing her eyes. Payal laughs at the other end, amused at Khushi's words.
"I meant are you feeling better now? Amma was telling me that you were looking upset last night during the Karwachauth rituals?" Payal asks, the concern back in her voice.
Last night... Khushi... Aren't you going to finish the fast?... i admit coming in from the window a lot difficult than it looks... you look beautiful Khushi... I am so sorry Khushi... These are for you... Will you marry me Khushi?...
Khushi suddenly gasps out loud, making Buaji and Garima stare at her direction curiously. All traces of sleep had disappeared from Khushi's eyes which were now wide open with the recollection of the events of last night. "JEEJI!" she suddenly exclaims into the phone. "Jeeji, I have to talk you about something," Khushi mutters urgently. Payal raises her eyebrows.
"Tell me. What do you want to talk about?" she enquires. Khushi peers around her warily and then cups her hand on the mouthpiece.
"I need to talk to you about ARnavji. But I can't talk here," Khushi murmurs as quietly as she can. Payal smiles victoriously at the other end.
"Then come down to Shantivan. We can talk here," she replies matter-of-factly.
"NO!" Khushi immediately retorts. She realises it being Sunday, there was a good chance of Arnav being at home. And she didn't want to face him, without having her head cleared of all her doubts first. She needed to meet her sister somewhere else. "Jeeji, Meet me at Chandni Chowk in an hour. We'll talk also and get some Diwali shopping done too." Payal's smile widens. It had been a long time since the two of them had gone out shopping. It would be a nice change from the usual hum drum of Shantivan.
"Okay Khushi. Let's meet near Chandni Chowk's metro station in an hour then," Payal confirms and disconnects the call. Khushi rushes to the bathroom to get ready, ignoring Garima's summons to drink her tea which was now sitting cold on the dining table.
Writer's note: So, not that simple eh? 😆 no no don't throw tomatoes and eggs at me just yet. Whatever happens, happens for good. Patience my lovelies, patience has given you Rabba Ve's in the past hasn't it 😉
Stay tuned!
PS - To @MERIT, I'm working on your demands darling (if not all at once, one in particular for sure, not saying anything else for being a major spoiler alert 😉)
Nice update Smitzy..I am happy Arnav and Khushi are finally coming together. Hope Shyam fails here. I am worried about Anjali.
Please plan elaborate wedding including everything Haldi,Sangeet,Wedding and Pag phere also pls.
Will you incorporate a honeymoon sequence in which both Arnav-khushi and Aakash-payal go somewhere.
When will Payal be pregnant. I know it is also one of the most awaited sequence.
I am very happy with this FF. I try seeing always how many scenes of your FF will be coming in the track
Did u notice that our feedback seems to have worked. and now mamaji had returned atleast on phone 😊
Khushi is going to do her dabba service😊
Smitzy,
Thanks for the PM
I am glad that Khushi is thinking things through and is not swept away by Arnav's love for her. As much as I want her to say yes and get married right away, there is a lot of unraveling that is needed. I love that she is thinking of how her family would react as well.
Great update
