CHAPTER 3: QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
He was abnormally quiet the entire way back. She could see a nerve in his taut jaw ticking and it didn't take much for her to guess that he was still angry. Her only consolation was that he was holding her hand gently. When they reached his home he simply got about freshening up. Completely ignoring her.
She wanted to apologize but what reason would she give for running away. But she couldn't take his silence anymore.
"I can explain..."
"I am all ears"
Khushi cringed at the tone of his voice.
"I admit I cannot explain in detail. But would you believe me if I told you that I had a very, very strong reason for running away?"
"You ran away. Why?" Saying that he came close to her and held her left cheek gently in his right palm, "What is it? Whom are you running away from?" He coaxed her gently.
She just wanted to collapse in his arms and cry her story out to him. But he had been so good to her, why burden him with her troubles? Why complicate matters for him? He didn't deserve that in return for all his goodness.
"Would telling you whom I was running towards suffice?"
When he raised his eyebrows she replied, "I was looking for you. I thought I will find The Bear and The Beer and meet you there. You make me feel safe"
He stepped away from her and folded his hands on his chest, "And how were you planning to do that?"
She was confused and replied without thinking, "I would have read the sign board. Simple"
"So you can read?"
Khushi's eyes widened and her mouth formed a silly "O".
"I don't know where you come from but in this world only the aristocracy can read" he stated the fact simply.
Khushi wanted to say something, anything but couldn't bring herself to come up with a plausible excuse.
He brought his hand up to stop her from talking, "I would rather you speak the complete truth whenever you are ready rather than speak lies to me now."
He had just called her a liar. Well, not exactly but a potential one. She had not planned to speak the truth but to be branded a liar was no fun either. Her ego was not liking this. Not one bit.
"I don't know anything about you either"
"What do you want to know about me?"
"Who are you?"
"Excuse me! I am a Commoner who does odd jobs to make ends meet. Didn't you see that?"
"Yes! You are a Commoner who somehow doesn't seem to match with the house you live in. I know that you live here but I can feel this is not your home. You don't treat this as your home. You are a Commoner who doesn't think twice before emptying his pocket to allow a random girl to go shopping. You are a Commoner who engages in a lot of skilled labour but is not skilled in any of the labours. I noticed you did jobs that required strength and not skill. So, who are you?"
There she had said it all. All the observations that she had made the whole day.
"Next!"
The nerve of the man! He simply dismissed her question. She opened her mouth to argue when he cut her off, "I don't know who you are. You don't know who I am. Fair and square"
"You know what I was doing in the marketplace while you were not with me. I don't know what you were doing. Now that's a fair question to ask. What were you upto?"
"Fine. First I bought food which is right now lying near the stove ignored. Also, I had to get myself updated about the happenings in the kingdom. There is no place like The Bear and The Beer for that. Then I... then I... I had to buy something which is lying right now on the bed." He started with a lot of confidence but lost a little of his composure towards the end.
She was curious to know what news had come by him and what had he bought???
"Good enough. You know I am running from something. But what is your goal of life?"
"That's a philosophical question. I didn't know you were interested in philosophy apart from ordering people to answer more questions than you have answered" he was smirking handsomely while making the remark.
"You know what I mean"
"I am looking for something...or someone. I don't know. It is supposed to remove all the hardships from my life. You guessed correctly this is not my house. In fact, I don't even belong to this part of the world. This is not my native kingdom. And going by the look of things this is not your native kingdom either. You don't recognize anyone or anything and no one recognizes you either"
Khushi was desperate to steer the conversation from her again. And she was getting to know so much about him. Why let go off the chance?
"Don't you find this funny? You are looking for something and you don't know what it is? I at least know what I am running away from"
"Don't mock! You don't know anything about the concerns of my life. Since you are not planning to leave me anytime in the near future you deserve to know at least this. I am looking for Khushi"
Khushi was shocked. She felt light-headed. It took all the strength of her training to mask her true emotions to not collapse right there.
"Kh...Khushi?" She asked to know for certain if she had heard him right.
"Yes. Khushi. As in happiness. I don't know. It's a long story. I will tell you some other time, if required. I came to this Kingdom because I had heard the Princess here is named Khushi. But that hope got dashed too today."
She wanted to know what exactly had he heard about her to make him sound so morose. Was he actually looking for her or was it just a coincidence? But she didn't want to ask him anymore questions. She didn't want to dwell further on it. Her head was swimming as it is.
"I have been more than honest in answering your questions. Will you answer one honestly?"
She nodded, still speechless.
"What is your name?"
That's when Khushi realized they didn't know each others' names. She racked her brain for something again. But her brain seemed to have gone for a ball.
"Khush...Dil Khush. My name is Dil Khush" She smiled relieved. But she also felt a pang of guilt for not answering the only question for which he expected honesty
"Dil Khush? What kind of a name is this? Well, anyways your name. I will call you Khush though"
She knew it was a stupid name. But Khush was better. She liked Khush. Especially from his mouth.
"I don't feel like eating. You can freshen up and eat. The packet on the bed is... is for you... I bought it for you... Also, go to sleep on time. We are leaving this house early in the morning. When you are ready to sleep turn down the lantern"
Saying that he turned towards the settee and tucking one arm under him and covering his eyes with the other he prepared to sleep, "Since you were not polite enough to ask the name is Arnav"
Khushi stood there for a couple of moments till he drifted off to sleep. She wanted him to eat something. He had worked hard the whole day and then she had made him go on a wild goose's chase looking for her. But he was sleeping so soundly. She didn't have it in her to trouble him further.
She didn't feel like eating either. She went to the washroom to freshen up and turned down the lamp first. She didn't want his hand to get a cramp for covering his eyes for long. She left the bit she was most excited about for the last.
She went to the bed and picked up the packet. She went towards the window to rip the paper open under the moonlight. Inside there were not one but two packets.
She ripped the smaller one first. There were rolls upon rolls of colorful satin ribbons. She had forgotten that she had asked him to get her a single ribbon that morning.
He had turned to his side now, facing her. Both his hands tucked under his face. She smiled looking at him sleeping serenely. What problems were nagging him to leave his hearth and home to wander about in a kingdom that was not his?
She ripped open the larger packet. It contained the white dress she had turned down that morning because it was too expensive. He had noticed! What more he had also bought a royal blue sash along with it. He must have spent a major portion of his earning for the day on buying that dress and the sash.
She had seen him being casual about money. It was not the point about how much of it he had. This money was a result of his hard work. The sweat dripping from his brow. The callousness of his hands. The dirt on his clothes.
She was now smiling through her tears. Arnav.
She left everything on the bed and kneeled down in front of the settee. She bent close to him and kissed him on his cheek gently.
****
Arnav waited for her to tuck herself in before he allowed himself a small smile.
