Life Mein Kabhi Kabhi...
"London!? Wow... Studying there must've been a dream come true!" Anjali exclaimed excitedly.
"London's a beautiful city! The sights, the people, the food, Everything! I spent two amazing years of my life there!" Khushi replied just as excitedly before her tone became a little softer, "I'll miss it, no doubt, but now I'm back and there's no way I leave my family for a second time like that..."
Slight confusion replaced her excitement as Anjali asked, "Why'd you come back?...I mean I'd never stay that far away from my family for that long, but you spent two years there and now suddenly your back...Not to be offensive but why not finish your college then come back?!"
This was a question Khushi had prepared herself for, except she hadn't expected it from her. Her parents? Yes, but definitely not Anjali.
"No offense taken, but...um...I'd always known that if I came back or spoke to my family much then I wouldn't have been able to stay there for as long as I had. Of course I wanted to finish my fourth year, but there was no way I could miss Payal's graduation. So now that I'm back I can't even think about leaving again." Khushi said everything quickly, not making eye contact.
To avoid further discussion on the topic she lightened the mood, "Anyways! If you have a list of places you'd want to visit then London should definitely be on there! You'll just love it!" Khushi said animatedly as she added with a wink, "I know I did!"
"Oh how I wish!" Anjali went to on to muttered disappointedly, "Dad and Bhai are there right now while I'm stuck her--"
One look at Akash's face cut her sentence short. Payal went forward, placing a comforting hand on his shoulder, which he just pushed away as he walked off, ignoring Anjali's apologizes.
"Crap! Crap crap crap crap crap!" Anjali felt like such an idiot and she let everyone else know too, "Ugh! I'm such an idiot! Some sister I am!"
Payal took a step forward only to be stopped by Khushi, who shook her head indicating to leave him alone for a while. Khushi gave Anjali a reassuring smile before walking away saying, "I'm going to get a drink. Would you guys like one?"
When both girls shook their heads in a negative Khushi walked off towards the drinks table. She was deep in thought when the waiter asked her what she'd like.
"One coke please." The waiter immediately handed her a coke and she walked off deep in thought once again.
Ever since she had gotten here someone or something always brought Arnav up. Her dad introducing him as her future business partner. Akash missing his brother at his graduation. Anjali wanting to be in London with him. Who was he? Why was this faceless name occupying her thoughts like no one else had, not even... Khushi was just walking along when,
"Hey! Watch it!" She had nearly spilled her drink all over someone, who seem pretty upset. She looked at them about to apologize when she came face to face with Akash.
"Akash? I'm so sorry! I almost ruined your suit and that to at your graduation!" Khushi cried extremely upset. She was about to continue when Akash interrupted her,
"It's okay, I wasn't watching where I was going..." Akash mumbled as he walked around Khushi.
"Akash?" He stopped when Khushi called him, "You can talk to me, you know? You'll feel better if you let it out."
Akash looked down at Khushi, he was younger but his height gave nothing away, she could see the sadness in his eyes. She gestured him to follow her towards the more secluded, quieter part of the party. She had him sit down in front of her before she asked,
"What is it Akash? What's wrong?" Khushi asked placing a hand on his, her eyes reflecting true concern. "This has nothing to do with Anjali wanting to be in London, does it? This has everything to do about your brother... Am I right? Or am I right?"
Akash looked at Khushi, who arced her eyebrows at him, her play on words and expressive expressions cracked a slight smile out of him.
"Aha! That! Right there!" Khushi exclaimed suddenly pointing at Akash's face causing him to lean back awkwardly. Khushi let her hand drop as she smiled at him, "That smile! That's what you should be doing today... smiling not sulking."
Akash looked away, but looked back just as quickly before saying, "It's...Bhai...It's just that he promised! I never asked him for anything! And when I do he breaks his promise..."
"Akash, you've got to understand. Your brother couldn't make it because something came up. Your dad has handed over his entire business to him! If something goes wrong then it's his job to fix it now." Khushi tried reasoning with him. She moved next to him, placing a hand on his shoulder, "If I know anything about being an older sibling then it's that despite being countries away right now, your all he can think about."
"No, he doesn't care about me. All he cares about is work and business." Akash grumbled, looking away.
Khushi yanked his back to face her, "Don't ever say that! He's probably in London feeling ten times worse then you're feeling about him not being able to make it today!"
Khushi took a deep breath before continuing, "Look, Akash, I don't know your brother nor have I ever met him. Heck! I haven't even seen him! But I'll tell you that if he could he'd definitely be here right now, but since he couldn't he won't leave a stone unturned trying to make it up to you. That just the thing about older siblings, they can't always please the younger ones but at the same time their happiness means the world to them."
Akash looked away, but not before Khushi caught the look in his eyes...was it guilt...or shame...?
"I feel horrible now! All day I've been sulking and ruining everyone else's mood because bhai couldn't make it. But I never thought about them or bhai, about how they must feel when I'm sad or how bad bhai must be feeling for not making it." Akash mumbled, his voiced laced with guilt.
Khushi took his face into her hands, looking at him with a sisterly love, "That's nothing to feel guilty or shameful about. Instead just be happy, it'll make your family happy. And even miles away your brother will feel a little at ease."
Akash flashed her a huge toothy smile before engulfing her in a bear hug. Khushi chuckled at him, feeling relaxed that Akash could finally enjoy himself.
"Thanks...um..." Akash stopped short making Khushi look at him questioningly. "Can I call you Di...?"
"Of course you can! Is that something to ask?" Khushi laughed, playfully hitting Akash.
"Okay then, thanks Di...for everything" Khushi smiled back in response to Akash.
"Come on, everyone's probably looking for us. It's time to go." Khushi said getting up. They both left and went to their respective families completely oblivious to the fact that someone had been watching them from afar the whole time.
