Part 56
In the middle of the fun & frolic, in the midst of a thousand diyas lit for Diwali, right in the middle of the sound of many crackers burst by the children on the streets and on the terraces of homes all around, Khushi leaned against Arnav, savouring the feel of his hard body against her side.
She whispered, "Hum Aapse Bahut Bahut Bahut Pyaar Karte He, Arnavji!"
He looked down at the imp leaning trustingly against him, whispering her love for him in the midst of the cacophony, a naughty expression on her face...
Just a few more hours to go... The wedding would be over then... The guests & family would partake of dinner, and leave...They would be alone in their room. Would she dare to repeat her love confession then? Would she be able to take the punishment for teasing him & driving him beyond his self-control? He smirked at her, his eyes issuing the challenge. Khushi swallowed and lowered her eyes, deeming retreat the best part of valour.
The pairs went through the kanyadaan, with Babuji, helped by Anand & Chachaji, handing over his daughters into the able hands of Arnav & Akash. The gathbandhan, aashirwaad, stepping on the stone, laja hom, and mangalphere all happened in their turn.
Arnav looked at Khushi's glowing face. She looked so happy, smiling at her friends and family, laughing at something Mamiji said... He had deprived Khushi of all this. The way in which he had threatened Khushi, blackmailed her into marriage with him the last time, scared that she would leave him and go with Shyam, destroying his sister's marriage in the bargain, the tears that had fallen from her eyes as he had forcibly filled her maang and tied the mangalsutra around her neck... He closed his eyes in utter self-disgust.
Khushi looked at him, seeing the pain and the self-loathing. She placed her hand over his, clasping his clenched fingers in her warm ones, sliding her fingers through his, holding him in her protection, firm and sure. He looked at her, abject apology in his eyes. She whispered, "It doesn't matter, Arnavji. The past is over. Yours, mine, ours. It is gone."
He looked at her, wondering how he had been blessed to have such a pari in his life.
"We still have our family with us. We are together. That is all that matters."
He nodded.
They stood up and to the accompaniment of the chanting of Vedic mantras, walked around the havankund, making the seven vows to each other.
The Pundit explained the meaning of the ritual to both pairs.
He said, The first step is taken to earn and provide a living for your household & family, and avoid those things that might harm you.
The second step is taken to build your physical, mental and spiritual powers and to lead a healthy lifestyle.
The third step is taken to earn and increase your wealth by righteous and proper means.
The fourth step is taken to acquire knowledge, happiness and harmony by mutual love, respect, understanding and faith.
The fifth step is taken to have healthy, righteous and brave children for whom you will be responsible.
The sixth step is taken for self-control and longevity.
The seventh step is taken to be true to each other, loyal friends, and life-long companions by this wedlock.
(UltimateBarun, thanx!)
The priest asked them to sit down, with Khushi sitting to Arnav's left, symbolising that she was now his wife and close to his heart. Khushi smiled at Arnav as she sat by him, her arm resting against his strong, warm one. Payal sat to Akash's left.
It was time for Arnav & Akash to fill the maang of their wives with sindoor so as to signify to the world that they were married and ready to take on the responsibilities associated with the marriage. Akash smiled as he filled Payal's maang 3 times. Arnav took the sindoor to Khushi's maang, his eyes filled with pain at the thought of how he had mocked her beliefs and hurt her during their previous wedding ceremony. She smiled at him as though they were the only persons in that courtyard, as though she could see only him... A little sindoor fell on her nose as his fingers shook. He paused, contrite. But she smiled, "It is alright, Arnavji!."
The pundit held out the mangalsutra to Arnav & Akash. Akash smiled as he tied it around Payal's neck. Arnav looked at the mangalsutra, the chain of black beads and diamonds in his hands.
He had selected a new mangalsutra for her, not wanting her to wear the one she had discarded when she had left him. He did not want anything negative from their past to encroach upon their present life. He placed it around her neck, tying it firmly. She closed her eyes, thanking Devi Maiyya for giving them this second chance to live together. The priest informed them that the mangalsutra stood for the wife's desire and prayers for the long life of her husband, and that sindoor and mangalsutra were symbols of suhag, making them both aware that from then onwards they were married.
They touched each other's hearts, signifying that they were one mind and one body from then on. Their hearts raced at the same pace, their dhadkanein becoming one. Khushi's eyes smiled into his.
He slid a star-shaped wedding ring on to her finger.
Her lips trembled at the love behind his gesture, the care that had made him select star-shaped rings for her engagement & wedding.
She slid a ring with 3 diamonds on to his finger. She said softly, "Arnavji, the middle diamond is you. I am to your left and Di is to your right. You will always love both of us, and we will always love you, whatever happens."
Arnav swallowed, his fingers pressing hers, communicating what he could not...
She fed him a piece of sugar-free jalebi, and he returned the favour. They then took the blessings of the Pundit and the elders. Akash & Payal followed suit.
Arnav Singh Raizada, Khushi Arnav Singh Raizada, Akash Singh Raizada, & Payal Akash Singh Raizada smiled at their families and friends.
