Part-6:
Khushi was running in some lonely place, her heart beating faster every second and her eyes searching for the one thing or rather one person desperately. Her bare feet hurt with a burning sensation begging her to give up, but she still tried to keep the steady pace. She became breathless and her body struggled against her.
"Khushi.." she heard him call out and instantly her head looked around for the source of the voice.
"Khushi---" she again heard him but this time she sensed the direction of the source of the voice. "Khushi yahan--" He called out again and this time she advanced in the direction of the sound.
After walking a couple of minutes, carefully analyzing the place, she finally found him standing at a distance. Identifying him immediately, she fastened her foot steps and raced the small distance to stand in front of him. If the place appeared weird and blank to her, she ignored. All she wanted at the moment was to have a clear complete look at him.
He was in his regular 3-piece suit, with his overcoat being hanged on one of his arms exposing his white shirt and a dark colored vest. Seeing her he dropped his jacket on the floor while extending his hand towards her. She smiled lovingly at him, a smile that reflected in his eyes all too gracefully. She reached out to hold his hand and the moment she neared the little distance, she was at once bounced back.
"Kushi'" he said and she looked at his pleading eyes.
"Hum-hum aaa nahin aprahe hai" she was panicked.
"Khoshish karo khushi--"
She tried to approach him again to reach his extended hand but she was again pushed back with an invisible force. Both of them are standing opposite to each other, with a mere 1 foot distance, but she was unable to break the barriers that seemed to be in front of him. It seemed as though he was aware of those barriers but not letting her know about it. It was her turn to look at him in a pleading way and tears rolled down her eyes.
"Hum aapke paas nahin aparahe hai--" she said in that ever so pleading manner, with her eyes red with hurt and her hand desperate to reach his. She then observed his expressions soften'his pleading look was now replaced with something that looked like he accepted the barriers in between them. She dint like that look, not at all and when he swallowed hard and gave that smile which looked more like a distortion , she felt like her night-mares have become true.
She nodded her head saying a no---not to do what he was about to do; he smiled again, this time it was rather a sigh of grimace. He then turned around and started going away from her.
"Nahin--aap nahin jasakthe--please vapas ajayiye, hum yee--ye joh bhi hai thod denge, aapke paas ayanege--" too late he was walking and now he was vanishing into the distance of what looked like a woody place.
"Arnav ji..!!!!" she shouted in the top of her voice with her lungs almost exploding out in order to stop him--.
**
"Arnav ji"
"Khushi main yahin par hoon"
she jerked open her eyes with trembling hands which she realized was being held by another hand.
He was alerted the moment he heard his name from the voice. He held her hands tighter and appeared from behind her to have a look at her face. She was awake! He wasn't dreaming! Whatever he had been thinking has all vanished with one rescue call from her. Once word from her taking his name, which meant she needed him, he would be right there.
The moment she called his name waking up from the scariest dream ever, he was immediately there assuring her whatever she had been thinking or worrying about is all just a dream. As if their thinking collided, as if he somehow knew what she dreamed of though she isn't quite sure if she remembers the dream---despite all these, he was just right there as soon as she needed him.
**
After initial panic, his voice and the tight grip on her hand reassured her that he was right there. She was lying on that bed with her sparkling eyes searching for him and when they were finally locked with that of his eyes, she inhaled a sigh of relief, there were tears rolled down the side of her face, her lips were numb with loss of saliva--"aap--"
If she thought that she actually screamed his name out loud, it was only in her dream, but in reality she hardly whispered. Her voice was low and husky, and she swallowed trying to wet her lips and he immediately brought her the nearby glass of water.
Without bringing herself to drink the water, she brought her hand slowly on to his face running her tender fingers along his jaw line.
"Aap theek hai" she whispered. "Aap yahin par ho?" she smiled.
He returned the smile and his eyes were all wet finally being able to see her like this.
"Pagal ladki, khud ki halath toh dekho" he smiled and she closed her eyes letting out those twinkling tears out. . His ears longed to hear his name from her voice and now when he finally did, words couldn't describe how relieved he was. He then came closer to her observing every feature of her by rolling his eyes all over her face.
"Tumhe pata bhi hai kab se yahan pe aisee padhee ho? You scared me khushi!" he whispered in her ears and she smiled more.
"Meri bak-bak se aaapko thodi rahath toh milee na----"
"Shhh---" he placed his finger on her lips looking right in her eyes.
"Don't you dare speak like that, ever Khushi" he snapped a little, a habit which she has fallen in love with lately, or rather something which she had been missing--his anger, which conveys a lot more love than he could ever anticipate, only she would know how the anger could mean love and just pure care for her. She smiled more, completely satisfied this time.
Amused at her smile, he kept staring into her eyes. They stared and melted into each other's hazel world for what seemed like million seconds. He then remembered the glass of water in his hands. He showed the glass of water in his hand rolling his eyes sideways, she looked and nodded a 'yes' slightly. He helped her up and made her drink water, gently placing the glass in her mouth and holding her head with the other hand.
After putting the glass back on the table he resumed back their hand-lock making sure he is gripping her hand all too protectively.
"You really scared the hell out of me Khushi" He confessed looking like a lost puppy. He then observed the look in her eyes. A one in a million dollar kind of --'khushi-like' look, which he had always ignored in the past. His heart would right away recognize what that look means or rather what's in her mind behind that look is, but his egoistic mighty ASR mind always asked him to ignore that look.
A look filled with pure innocence, which conveyed a message as if she had proved something. When he said 'she scared him' she thought he cares for her enough to be scared of losing her. She was content with this feeling, she was happy that the emotion which conquered her has more or less, did reciprocate in him and more importantly he wasn't hiding it. There always this look on her face which conveyed she was glad to realize his care for her, and that look would always bring the forbidden ASR out; he would then ignore and walk away.
This time it was different. If the same look did bring a different Arnav out previously, now it was not the angry ASR who came out but the guilty ASR. He suddenly realized that this is all wrong. He can't let this happen. He cannot let her get carried away with this feeling. Last night he had spent hours thinking and making up his mind to face her hatred. He was rather prepared for her cold treatment and would readily accept it; he knew he deserved more than just that.
But khushi? He wondered---she seemed just happy being with him, she seemed content of having him beside her; she seemed to have forgotten all that she had been through or rather he had put her through. She seemed as if she has forgiven him, without as much as a mere apology or explanation which she did deserve! This realization has hit in the right chord of the guilty ASR; if not anything else, it only added to his guilt more.
How could she? What the hell is she made of? He thought that dealing with an angry khushi is much easier. She sure as hell SHOULD be angry on him! She isn't? But why khushi? Why Lov--He was even scared to take the word in reference to her. It dint make any sense! It really didn't!
"Khushi, main abhi aya" he said deciding to escape her eyes that held so much love for him.
"Nahin" she tightened the grip on his hand when he was just about to get up. "App kahin nahin jayenge" she demanded.
"Khushi, main bas abhi ajaoonga" he reasoned. "Doctor ko bhulana hai khushi, you should get checked once, bas do minute main ajaoonga" he assured.
"nahin, nahin , nahin. Aap ko kahin jaane ki zaroorath nahin hai, hum bilkul theek hai aur doctor ki koi zaroorath nahin hai" she reasoned back in her own khushi way.
"Khushi, zid math karo" it was 3am in the morning and everything around the hospital was silent. He needed to wake the nurse up and get her to call the doctor.
"For god's sake khushi, tum ek bohath badi operation ke baad hosh main aye ho, please, mujhe doctor ko bulane do, bas 2 min se zyada nahin loonga, please" he literally begged observing her tight grip on his hand. She is not going to listen, he gathered as much. He brought his other hand over hand and tried to ease the grip of her fingers. She was nodding her head saying a no--
"Khushi bas 2 min--" he said just when he was finally able to release his hand from her grip, as her hands were too weak to hold tighter.
He secretly promised himself that he will be back before she would realize that he is away.
Just when he turned around and approached the door, it was his turn to panic as he heard the cracking sound of the glass material on the floor--a sound which would surely alert the whole corridor of the silent hospital. He turned around in the next instant only to find khushi in a disoriented position. Her upper body was hanging from the bed with her hand stretched across the table which only indicated that she tried hard to reach the table and throw the glass.
"Khushi--" He was shocked and worried all of a sudden.
"Kya huwa?" A nurse busted open into the ICU, her face clearly indicated pure shock with the sudden sound. "Patient ko hosh agaya?" she gathered looked at khushi. "Main abhi doctor ko phone karoongee" she exclaimed and ran out of the room as fast as she arrived.
Within the next instant Arnav reached khushi, helped her up placing her head on the pillow back, placing her hand gently on her body----
"Appki problem solved, doctor ko bhulane ke liye aapko jaane ki koi zaroorath nahin hai" she commented as he was busy tucking her in with a serious and unreadable expression on his face.
"Yeh--kya pagalpan hai khushi?" he exclaimed trying to keep control of his anger.
"Tumhe lagjatee toh?, maine kahan na 2 minute main aajaoonga--"
"Nahin! Main aapko kahin jaane nahin doongee, kahin bhi nahin, bilkul bhi nahin!" she behaved stubborn like a small kid. He rolled his eyes unable to react to her.
"Pichle baar aap chodke gaye, dekhiye ye kya huwa, kya aap phir se chahthe hai ki hume kuch--"
"Shut up Khushi!! Mujhe torture mat karo! It's not funny..!!" he snapped in his typical ASR way. He in fact raised his voice this time more than needed. She was at once startled and her eyes became wet.
Hell! This what he has been scared of--hurting her and looking at those tears of her knowing very well that he is the sole reason for those tears.
He reached out his hand and placed on her head holding her head in his palm. He then closed the small distance, standing very close to her bed and brought her face to rest on his chest.
"Asie harqat math karo khushi" He whispered caressing her hair.
"aur aap kabhi mujhse door mat jayiyega" she demanded.
He didn't know what else to do; he never knew what else to say when someone demanded love, or rather when someone showered so much love on him. He just did what he had been resisting to do all the while, he brought his lips on that of her face and placed a tender kiss on her forehead that rested on his chest. She smiled and melted more in his arms.
He dint know what else to feel. The fight between his mind and his heart is still full on. While his mind played games and probed him repeatedly that he never deserved her, his heart gave away and wanted to just love her for the rest of his life. Nevertheless he listened to his heart for the moment and stayed like that for a while.
His di was right, Arnav singh Raizada is scared of love, scared to love and more than that scared to be loved. Love--its a complicated word for him but he never believed in it in the first case. He was sure of one thing, she would be better off without him, but how the hell is he going to let her know about this??
