The hallway was desert but she could hear the noise from where she was. Khushi swallowed nervously as she walked to the doors. The hall was brimming and she had to try hard to find Anjali. Finally she spotted her standing with her husband and went up to them.
"Arrey va! Khushiji, aap bohot sundar lag rahin hain!" Anjali exclaimed on seeing her. Shaan left to get a glass of water for his wife. (Wow! Khushiji, you look so beautiful!)
Khushi smiled. "Thanks, Anjaliji."
"Ek baat kahein, Khushiji?" Anjali took Khushi's hands in hers. "Bachpan mein, na, aap humein 'Di' kehke bulati thi. Humein achha lagega agar aap humein ab bhi 'Di' hi bulaayein." (Can I say something, Khushiji? When we were kids, you used to call me 'Di'. I would like it if you Continued doing so now.)
Khushi giggled happily. "Theek hain, magar ek shart par!" (Okay, but I have a condition!)
"Voh kya?" (What?)
"Aap bhi humein 'Khushi' bulaayenge, 'Khushiji' nahin?" (You too will call me 'Khushi', not 'Khushiji'?)
Anjali laughed. "Done."

"Kya kaha aapne?" she whispered. Arnav felt his frown return, scrunching up his face. Minutes agoe she had been blushing like a new bride and he had kissed her soft velvety cheek and then she had pushed him off roughly, her beautiful brown orbs filled with fear he could not explain. (What did you say?)
"What happened, Khushi?"he tried cupping her face in his hands but she shoved then away and stepped back.
"Aapka naam?" she whimpered. Her eyes were overflowing with tears and he felt an ache in his heart, a feeling which told him he was ready to do anything. Anything to stop her tears. Even if it killed him. (Your name?)
"Arnav Singh Raizada," he said, his voice hoarse. What was wrong with her? What's with the name?
The fear in her eyes intensified and she took another step backwards. "A-a-aapke b-b-b-bauji ka?" (Your father's?)
He ground his teeth together before striding to her and grabbing her elbows tight. She shrieked with pain and fright. "What the hell, Khushi? What's wrong? How did my name and my dad's name become so important suddenly? Aur tum itni dari hui kyun ho?" (... And why are you so scared?)
"A-a-aapke b-b-b-bauji ka naam?" she insisted. His fingers bit into her skin but he did not care. He was too angry to care. He stared at her for a long time, her questions confusing, angering and scaring him all at once. Then he decided. What's with a name? (Y-y-your f-f-father's name?)
"Anant Singh Raizada."

Time had stopped as soon as their eyes met. She had been talking to his Di when he had remembered it was time for Anjali's medicine. He had paused a distance from them, behind his cousin, when he had seen her and unknown to him, a small smirk had formed on his face. She was wearing what he had hoped she would, but he had not really expected it.
Her slim body was wrapped in a black glass tissue saree filled with gray as dark as his eyes and silver appliqu crystal art. She wore her hair down, just the way he loved it and she wore silver kundan jewellery whose designs matched those on her saree. As usual, she wore light make up but looked stunning. So stunning she took his breath away. Slowly, he walked towards her, taking one step at a time, absorbing her image, drinking her in.

The world went a shade darker for Khushi. Thunder roared above them but she heard nothing. She could not even see him. All she saw was darkness. Darkness for her. Darkness for him. Why had she not know it before? What had she never asked him his name before? How could she have been so stupid? How could she have befriended a person without actually knowing him?
She had betrayed.
She had betrayed her family. Her parents. Her dead sister. Her brother. Her promise. Herself... She had betrayed him...
"Khushi!" she finally heard him. She felt him shake her by the shoulders, as if trying to wake her up. But she still could not see him. She was blinded. Only then she realised it was raining heavily. So heavily she could not see him.
Arnav Singh Raizada.
Something shattered inside. Her heart?
A sob rose but she repressed it. Why did she want to cry? Why for him? He was her enemy's son, wasn't he? But had he not been her friend all these days?
Tears poured out, mingling with the raindrops. Khushi let herself break down. He knew it at once, though he did not know why. She felt his arms snaked up around her waist, pulling her to him, to his warmth. But not anymore. She could not hurt herself anymore. She could not hurt him anymore. Because somewhere, hurting him meant hurting her.
She stepped back and felt the shock that went through him deep inside her heart. but she had to get away before it was too late. But wasn't it already? Sobs racking through her body, she turned and ran as fast as she could back home. She stumbled and staggered on the way but she was still grateful for the rain.
Because he would not be able to follow her then. If it blinded her, then it would sure blind him...

One moment, she was smiling and hugging Anjaliji ' no, Di, now ' the next, she was lost in steel depths. Her breath hitched and her heart thrummed. He smiled slightly at her and she felt her heart skip a beat. He looked different tonight. She could not say he looked more handsome because he always was, each day more than the other.
He looked different. Happy?
Did he look happier than usual? Despite the fact that he was giving her a mere half-smile?
Khushi blinked, inhaling deeply. He wore a black suit too, with a Mandarin collar jacket. Surprisingly enough, the embroidery on the collar and cuffs of his jacket was silver. She frowned instantly as she realised it. their colours were matching, and if she were not wrong, even the design on the clothing was nearly similar.
Was it fate? Or had this been done on purpose?
Just then Anjali pulled back and noticed Khushi staring at someone over her shoulder. She turned around to see her cousin gazing at the beauty who stood next to her, perhaps the only woman under this roof who had preferred putting on a saree, honouring her Indian roots. She hid her smile and called her love-struck brother.
"Chhote?"
Arnav snapped out of it. "Yeah, Di?"
Khushi blushed deep, as startled as Arnav and shifted her gaze to the floor.
"Khushi!" Ritika came forward and hugged her friend. "You look so beautiful! achha, mere saath chalo! I have to show you something." (... okay, come with me!...)
She pulled Khushi away.

Arnav stood in the rain, confusion surrounding him. What had just happened? He had felt her push him away, and then, she was gone leaving emptiness all around him. What had happened to her?
He had gotten the feeling that his and his dad's name had scared her. But why? What was in their names?
***
"Khushi."
She turned around slowly and his heart somersaulted madly in his chest. Ritika stood there smiling at the two of them in confusion making him even more uncomfortable about this. But he had to do it.
Taking in a deep breath, he raised his hand, offering it to her. Khushi looked at it, baffled and not understanding anything.
"C'mon, Khushi! Bhai is asking you for a dance."
Okay, maybe he should thank his younger cousin for this someday. She widened her eyes at Khushi urging her to take Arnav's hand and his gratitude increased. Finally, as Khushi did not respond, Ritika grabbed her hand and pressed into his.
"Off you go, guys!"
