Part 7: The wedding Things
*Note*: This part is a continuation of ARNAV's POV
Arnav knocked on Payal and Akash's bedroom door one more time. Payal opened the door, yawning.
"Arnav?" She said in a sleepy voice.
"I want to learn how to dance." Arnav said quickly.
That cleared Payal's sleep like sunshine clears rainclouds. She looked at him with her eyes wide, her jaw dropped. "Come again."
"You heard me. I want to learn how to dance."
"Teach him Payal, or else poor Khushi will break all her toes." Akash drawled, walking up behind Payal.
"Shut up Akash." Arnav glared.
"Save that line for Aman...and do you mind? My wife and I and trying to get some sleep." Akash wrapped his arms around Payal's waist. Arnav's mind briefly wandered and imagined himself doing that to Khushi.
"Fine. Starting tomorrow. But for now, go and sleep Mr. Groom." Payal touched his cheek affectionately.
He smiled at her and wandered into his room. He fell asleep within minutes, not because he was tired but because he finally felt content with his life.
In the morning, just as he was about to meet Payal on the terrace, he ran into Nani and Mami.
"Alright Mister...I need to have a talk with you. I have some rules for you until the wedding day..."
"Rules? Nani...you know I don't follow anyone's rules except my own."
"I know that Chotte...but these are more like tradition...your mother would have had you follow them."
Arnav pressed his lips together and nodded. Nani smiled at him and exchanged a look with Mami. "Rule number one. No seeing Khushi until the wedding except for the ritual ceremonies."
Arnav's eyes widened but he quickly composed himself. "Rule number two. Office work isn't an excuse to make Khushi come over so that you can see her. Rule number three...please take part in every ritual leading to your wedding. Each ritual holds a meaning...a celebration of joy...you'll look back on these days once and smile...and I don't want you to miss out on them. Alright?"
"Okay Nani." He agreed quickly. He was getting late for his lesson with Payal and the only rule he really cared about was rule number 1. No seeing Khushi until the wedding?! Ridiculous! There was a fashion show underway and he needed her to work on it! What if they lost a pin or something again? What if Khushi's bracelet was going to save the day again?! Sheesh.
After a much torturous practice session for Payal, Arnav sat on the floor.
"Maybe I should get Annie to help me with this...you're pregnant and I don't want anything to happen to you..."
"Oh shut up." Payal said taking a seat next to him. "You're fine...by the Sangeet day, you'll be perfectly ready." Payal smiled.
Arnav just nodded at her. After having breakfast with the family, he left for the office, feeling a new kind of excitement. The excitement, however, died as soon as he entered his cabin. Khushi wouldn't be here today. He pushed the thought out of his head and immersed himself in work. Being the workaholic he was, that wasn't a problem for him.
The entire week passed by pretty much the same way. Every day when he got home, he would hear something that went on with Khushi and he wondered if they were doing that on purpose to tease him. His dance sessions with Payal were also going well. He was no longer stepping on toes. Khushi was in for a surprise at the Sangeet.
A couple days into the week, he decided that there was a rule about not seeing her, but there was no rule about not being able to talk to her on the phone. He always reached for the phone and nearly dialled her number but then he always put the phone away without calling her. "What can't she call me?" was his stubborn way of making himself feel better about the fact that he wasn't calling her.
The Sangeet:
When Arnav entered, Khushi was already in the living room of the mansion along with Payal and Mamiji. There was already a cluster of women dancing to dhol beats in the middle of the room. Surprisingly, Khushi wasn't one of them.
She stood there looking elegant in a Navy blue lehenga with fine decorative work on it. As usual, she wore minimal make up and minimal jewellery and her million dollar smile. The contagious smile of hers caught Arnav within seconds. He could feel his muscles move on their own accord to form a smile and he approached her with Akash.
She looked at him and her smile widened a little. He nodded a hello to her and she greeted him back. At that moment, he was glad that they hadn't called each other all week. Seeing her after an entire week of no communication was far more exciting.
Akash gestured to Payal and she nodded and left. A few seconds later, all was quiet and all heads turned to Payal as she announced a few performances.
First up were Akash and Payal with 'Tumse Milke Dil Ka Hai Jo Haal'. Arnav could practically see Khushi jumping out of her skin as she gushed and awed over Akash-Payal and their sparkling chemistry.
"You're not dancing?" Arnav asked her once their performance had finished.
Khushi raised her eyebrows at him. "It's my Sangeet and I won't dance? That is never going to happen. In fact, I'm up next!" And with that, she sped away into the crowd. After a few minutes, the lights focused on the stage and the room dimmed. After Akash's announcement, A few guys and Kevin went up on stage and they huddled around. When 'Desi Girl' started along with the performance, Arnav felt the old feeling of jealousy coming back. Not because of Kevin but because of the others that were on that stage with her.
Khushi revealed herself and Arnav found himself intrigued by her new costume. She had recreated Sri Devi's Hawa Hawaii outfit.
She looked like a china doll as she danced to the song. He was well aware of the cheers around him but he could care less. After a couple of minutes, she disappeared off the stage for a few minutes.
When she came back again in Madhuri's costume, Arnav had to fight the urge to drop his jaw! Was this a coincidence or had someone told her that Arnav's first celebrity crush was Madhuri Dixit! He watched her dance gracefully, thoroughly enjoying herself. It was evident that she was dancing for herself and no one else.
When the second performance ended, someone from the office came up to Arnav and Arnav couldn't remember the man's name for the life of him! The person sitting next to Arnav whispered the name. Just as he started talking to the man, something soft hit his face. He turned to face the direction from where the damned thing came and he saw Khushi standing there.
This time, Annie, his P.A, joined Khushi on stage except...Annie was dressed like ASR. Khushi started singing and the lyrics, although true, were pretty funny as they poked fun at Arnav. Surprisingly, he didn't find himself getting angry at this. Normally if someone had mocked him, he would have been no less than Satan, but with Khushi, he actually had an urge to laugh. She had ASR figured out just as much as she had Arnav figured out.
After Khushi went off the stage, he excused himself and went after her. He found her stepping out of the guest room, back in her Navy lehenga.
She froze when she saw him because he was frowning at her. He walked closer to her and she took automatic steps backwards until her back hit the wall. Startled, she looked to her side and tried to escape but he put his hand on the wall, blocking her path. Instinctively, she turned to the other side to leave but his arm was already in place, effectively guarding her way. She looked at the button on his coat, afraid to look into his face. He looked angry.
"So...I don't know how to laugh?" He said huskily.
Khushi grabbed a bundle of her lehenga skirt's cloth in her hand and clenched her fist. "I've never seen you laugh." She said, her voice shaking.
He inched closer and she pressed herself further into the wall, as if that was even possible. "Office ke Jamaai?" His voice took on a slight joking tone.
Khushi simply nodded and gulped. He moved one of his hands and reached for her hand. He noticed that her muscles went stiff when he took her hand in his. He didn't know what she was expecting from him but he knew he's surprised her when he started leading her towards his room. When they entered the room, Khushi's eyes were round and her lips had formed a small 'o' in surprise.
He let go of her hand and walked towards the closet. She took a look around his room for the first time ever. It was a bland room with white walls, white flooring and dark solid coloured furniture. He came back to her holding a bag in his hand. He handed it to her and she took it robotically.
"Can you please change into that? I hope you don't mind." He gave her a small smile.
Khushi blinked. "Uh...yeah...sure...what is it?"
"Don't worry...it's nothing too outrageous..." Arnav shrugged.
In reply, she just nodded. He smiled again and walked out of the room, closing the door behind him. He paced outside, trying to imagine what she would look like in the sari he'd just given her. He had gotten Payal to help him pick one out for her. It was a dark green colour that would compliment her fair complexion. This was only a part of the surprise; she had no idea what else she had coming her way.
He turned to see her when he heard the door open and he was awestruck by what he saw. He had obviously pictured her in the outfit when he'd bought it but he'd been wrong. His imagination hadn't done her justice. It never did. She looked no less than an angel standing in front of him in the green sari, absolutely no jewellery on, and her hair falling perfectly like a waterfall down her back while the shorter strands framed and danced around her face. Her cheeks were a brilliant shade of pink and her eyes were dug into the ground.
After a few seconds when he found his voice, he led her back to the hall. Payal beamed a huge smile at him when she saw them enter the room back together.
Akash leaned closer to Payal. "What's going on? You know something I don't."
"It's a surprise...just wait!" Payal hushed him and walked onto the stage.
Arnav leaned closer to Khushi and she flinched slightly. "Just do what she says."
Khushi's head jerked up, her expression screamed of her confusion. He just smirked and walked away from there, disappearing into the crowd.
"Hey everyone! Out of all of you, whoever was at the cocktail party was present to see Khushi's amazing surprise performance but for those who weren't...don't be disheartened because she's back with another performance for us all! Please put your hand together for Khushi!" Payal excitedly completed the announcement and the lights dimmed again.
A spotlight focused on Khushi as she took slow steps towards the stage. Arnav watched her from the other end of the stage. She looked like she was going to hyperventilate right there on the stage. Just as she reached her position, another spotlight came on and focused on him. The applause faded and was replaced by gasps.
Khushi looked like she was shocked to the core seeing Arnav standing next to her. 'Teri Meri' started playing and he walked around her, going to her other side. She was surprised further when he took her hand and started dancing. Arnav Singh Raizada was dancing!
Arnav took her hand again at the end of the performance and took a bow with her while the crowd went wild applauding and cheering for the couple. Arnav could feel his heartbeat which was slightly faster than normal. His hands felt like they were on fire. Khushi's cheeks probably felt like they were on fire, they sure as hell looked like they were.
He leaned closer to her and she became still in response. "How're your toes?" He asked her even though he was well aware that he hadn't stepped on her toes a single time during this performance.
She burst into waves of giggles and he smiled with her. He led her off the stage and after a few handshakes and a few shy glances at him, she excused herself to go and change. Being smooth and subtle, he excused himself after a minute and followed her towards his room. Once he reached, Arnav knocked on the door.
A few seconds later, Khushi opened the door and her cheeks changed colour instantly seeing his face. He smiled to himself. He was very well aware of the effect he had on her and he loved every bit of it.
The way she blinked a lot more when he was around, the way her cheeks went from a creamy white to a crimson red, the way her breathing quickened, the bulging pulse at the base of her neck, the slight tremble of her lips never failed to escape his eyes. Then there were the nervous gestures such as tucking a non-existent strand of hair behind her ear, playing around with her fingers, playing around with a necklace or a bracelet, the small nervous smiles.
As he walked into the room, she took her usual steps backwards. She moved her fingers around her ear as if tucking in a strand. That's when he noticed that her hair was tied up. He reached around her head and grabbed a hold of the clip, pulling it off in one smooth motion. Her hair gracefully danced down her back.
"That's better." He said.
Khushi breathed out and looked at him with what seemed like a lot of effort. He smiled at her gently. "If you don't mind, can I ask you for something?" he asked and she nodded in response. "This sari looks good on you...don't change."
Her eyes widened a little bit and he left from there. He was thinking about their dance a few minutes ago while talking to Akash when she came back, still wearing the green sari. She gave him a smile and then went back to dancing and enjoying with the others while Arnav talked to office staff and stole glances at Khushi.
He wasn't allowed to drop her home that night, so Akash and Payal went to drop her while Arnav stayed at home, annoyed.
The next day passed by the same way. All the ladies were gone to Khushi's place for the mehendi ritual but he wasn't allowed to go. Akash was just as annoyed with this rule. Who the hell made such stupid rules anyway? What was the point of such pointless rules!
Payal came back and gushed about how much fun the ritual was and how the singing and dancing had happened there too.
"But then near the end, she really started missing her parents and got a little teary eyed...but we managed to cheer her up..." She smiled while Arnav and Akash frowned.
"Why didn't you tell me? I would have come over to cheer her up!" Akash offered.
"Yeah, I'm sure. You'd come to see your wife more than to cheer Khushi up." Mami ji teased.
"You're sure she's alright?" Arnav whispered to Payal, taking special care that Akash or Mami didn't hear.
"Yes...and I was expecting it anyway...in these days surrounding the wedding, girls miss their parents...I did too" Payal mumbled and smiled at Arnav.
He nodded in return and excused himself. As soon as he was within the four walls of his room, he picked up his cell phone and dialled Khushi's number without a second's hesitation.
"Hello?" a man's voice on the other line took Arnav by surprise.
"Hello? Uh...May I talk to Khushi?" he asked, still confused. He registered the background chatter on the other line. It sounded like a few women sitting and talking.
"She can't talk right now...she's got henna in her hands. Who is this?"
Arnav frowned. Didn't his number or name show up in the caller ID? "Arnav Singh Raizada" He answered the question with the authority and the tone he used with his clients.
The man on the other side laughed. "I know Ar-Naav. It's Kevin! Don't you recognize my voice?"
Arnav suppressed an urge to face-palm at the response. "Uh...Hey...Is Khushi there?"
"Yep she is...gimme a sec" Kevin said to Arnav. "Khooshie...guess who's calling! It's your hubby to be." The man giggled like a teenage girl and Arnav rolled his eyes. "But how are you gonna talk? You can't hold the phone right now..." Kevin teased Khushi.
Arnav wondered if Kevin had deliberately left the phone uncovered in his hand so that Arnav could hear all this teasing.
"Oh shut up Kevin...do your job properly...hold the phone properly!" Khushi's chirpy voice floated through the telephone and Arnav's head jerked up. Good sign. She didn't sound sad.
"Hello?" she talked into the phone now.
"Khushi...Payal bhabhi just told me about what happened at the ceremony...are you alright?"
She was silent for a few seconds which worried him a little. "You're calling me to find out if I'm okay?" She sounded stunned at the idea.
"Yes. Do you have a problem with that?" Arnav snapped. "Just answer the question." He made a face at the slip of his composure. He didn't mean to snap at her but here he was calling to make sure she was okay and she was questioning his efforts. It was hard for him to do this stuff as it was but then the fact that she always sounded so surprised with these gestures annoyed him a little bit. Why couldn't she just silently acknowledge the fact that he was trying his best and just leave it at that. Why did she have to verbalize everything?
"I didn't mean it like that...I mean...if Jiji told you everything, I would have supposed that she told you that I'm okay..." and now she sounded guilty and he didn't like it. He didn't want her to be afraid of him or his tones or his random snaps and slips of anger. "Listen..." she went on, "thank you...this means a lot...and I'm sorry I ticked you off..."
"Don't...don't apologize..." Now Arnav felt terrible for losing his cool. Talking about feelings and sentimental stuff was hard enough for ASR as it was and he sure as hell wasn't about to do it when Kevin was sitting right next to her, probably hearing everything she said along with god knows how many other women in the room. "I just called to make sure you're okay...enjoy the rest of the ceremonies"
"Bye..." She said sounding slightly disappointed.
"Oh My God, look at the blush on your face Khushi, you must'" and the line got disconnected. Arnav guessed that Kevin was chatting a little too excitedly right before he hung up.
He tossed his phone back onto the bed and went into the washroom for his evening shower.
The next morning was the haldi ceremony and much to his dismay, he was surrounded by herds of women who were adamant on painting him with the yellow paste from head to toe. It had all started with Payal. She had put a big blob of the paste on his cheek and plastered it across his face.
He had let it slide for Payal, Nani, and Mami but when women he didn't exactly recognize started coming up to him, he started to let a little bit of ASR's glares slip in, in the hopes that it would ward them off.
Much to his horror, the fact that he glared brought along with it a whole bunch of teases and light-hearted taunts. Eventually he gave up. There was no use in fighting women. They always won anyway.
Just like the day before, after his ceremony was done, everyone but the guys headed over to Khushi's to hold her ceremony. He wondered if she would be teased just as much as he was. Hell, if anything, he knew she'd be teased more. He sort of wished he could be there to see the colour changing on her face in the blink of an eye. The vibrant smile on her face, her laugh, her shy gestures...things that made him happy when he saw them.
"Don't worry Bhai...you'll get to see plenty of Khushi starting tomorrow." Akash teased as if he could read ASR's mind.
The next morning, Arnav woke up with a weird warm feeling in his heart. After his morning routine, he walked downstairs to find the house uber busy. The decorations were almost complete and people were running haywire holding this and that. In the middle of all this chaos, Payal, Mami and Nani instructed the workers.
He had just finished scanning the room when he saw a line of butlers carrying luggage into the living room.
"Not here! All this is supposed to go upstairs in the guest room for today...we'll shift it to Chotte's bedroom tomorrow." Nani ordered.
"Just give Khushi the blue bag...everything she needs today is in there." Payal added to the instructions.
Arnav watched as the butlers carried the luggage past him. Correction: Khushi's luggage. She was already here, somewhere in this house, hidden from him. Payal's eyes fell on him and she nearly burst a vessel.
"What are you doing?? Go get dressed! The wedding starts in two hours! You slept in on the worst day possible!" Payal frowned, dragging him away towards the room.
"No I didn't..." he started to protest when she shot him a glare and jabbed a finger at the wall clock.
"Holy ****" Arnav cussed. He had slept past noon for the first time in his life time.
"That's right...now get in there and get dressed and don't you dare step out until we say so!" Payal ordered and shoved him into his bedroom.
He founds his clothes and such neatly organized in the closet. He set them aside, deciding that he didn't want to get dressed and entire two hours before the actual thing. He grabbed his diary instead and pulled out Khushi's pros and cons list. He smiled reading it one more time. Again, he paid special attention to the cons'his mind weaving plans to correct those negatives and change them into positives. He had already started on the 'not romantic' one. He had managed to make her blush almost every time they'd interacted since the engagement'that counted as romantic didn't it?
When he had about an hour left, he went in for another shower, came out and dressed in the typical suit'he had refused strongly to wear Indian wedding attire'and then he sat on his bed, thinking of his mother.
Just then, Payal walked in. She smiled at him warmly, her eyes getting teary. She touched the corner of her eye, wiping off some liner and putting a tiny dot behind his ear at the hairline. It was such a coincidence that Arnav had imagined his mother doing something like that on this occasion and Payal had walked in a done it.
"I never thought I'd see you getting married! The way you were refusing girls left right and center...I'm so happy for you!" She said taking a seat next to him. She held up his hand and placed something small on his palm. Khushi's engagement ring. Payal put a hand on his shoulder, a supporting gesture. "I know how you are with emotional stuff but I should warn you...she's probably going to bawl tonight. It's a girl thing. Don't get alarmed." Payal said teasingly but there was certain seriousness in there that didn't escape his ears. He simply nodded in response.
"The first few days will be weird...its expected...talk it out with her...I know it's not easy for you but you have to understand that after tonight she'll be your life partner. She'll share everything with you...joys, sorrows, celebrations, successes, failures...everything. You two will support each other as needed and in order for her to be able to give you that...you'll need to open up to her. It doesn't have to be right away...but you can't close yourself from her like you do with the rest of us. Communication is a very important part of relationships Arnav...eventually there will be a time when she'll understand things you don't even say but until then...you're going to have to open up."
Payal paused and let him take that in. She knew he'd registered her words when he nodded. "Come on now...it's time to go."
"Bhabhi..." he spoke for the first time. He looked up at her and his eyes expressed how worried he was. "You think I'll make a good husband?"
There. He'd said it. He'd asked the question that had haunted him ever since he had agreed for this marriage. The last thing he wanted was to be a bad husband, to be a reason for the disappearance of her smile.
Payal smiled at him and learned forward to his eye level. She looked him straight in the eye'something only limited number of people can do...look into Arnav Singh Raizada's eyes without being terrified to death. "Yes. You will be. You're a good grandson, a good son, a good nephew, a great brother, an amazing friend, and an established businessman and I'm sure you'll be a great husband too...because Arnav Singh Raizada never fails at anything. Ever."
Arnav couldn't help but smile at her assurance. She kissed his forehead gently. They were just about the leave the room when Akash burst in. "Ah Bhai!! I'm so excited!! Akash gave Arnav a breath stopping hug.
"Jesus Akash! Hug your wife like that, not me!"
"I can't! Not for another five months! I can't afford to hurt my little princess." Akash put a hand on Payal's slightly bulging tummy. At four months pregnant, Payal showed a little bit of a baby bump but it was still easy enough to confuse the pregnancy with weigh gain.
"What makes you think it's a princess? It could be a prince!" Payal retorted.
Arnav rolled his eyes. Not this argument again! Just as Akash and Payal were ready to go at each other in full swing, Arnav held up his hands, one palm facing each person.
"How about you let me get married first, then decide if your baby's a prince or a princess?" Arnav taunted jokingly.
*
The wedding itself wasn't a too public event. Family, close friends, and closer business staff were present for the occasion and Arnav was greeted by a herd of people as he made his way towards the entrance. Mami did some customs which were out of Arnav's understanding. He stood there and let her finish whatever she had to. He waited at the door for Khushi. All heads turned towards the staircase when she entered.
She walked down the stairs as gracefully as soft winds, flanked by Payal and Nani. She held a similar garland in her hand'Arnav was holding an identical one'and the softness of the flowers of the garland matched the softness of her expression. The blush on her cheeks perfectly complemented the red roses in the garland and her red bridal wear.
The small smile on her face and the excitement in her eyes was heart-warming. When she was standing in front of him, she confidently looked at him and gave him a brilliant smile. The joy of seeing him again was crystal-clear on her face. Hell, she looked more confident than he felt!
She raised her arms to put the garland around his neck and the next thing he knew, he was lifted off the ground, out of her reach. He couldn't help but smirk at this silly game the men had decided to play. She frowned, seeing him a few feet above her head.
"I thought you were my best friend!" Khushi said to Akash.
Akash blinked a couple of times and exchanged a look with Kevin. In the next two seconds, Khushi was lifted into the air by Kevin and Akash and before the men holding Arnav had time to react, she had put the garland around his neck.
After both were put back onto the ground, Arnav made sure that no one was about to lift her up before advancing with the garland. She wasn't lifted up but she was pulled back by the girls as soon as he had raised his hands. He frowned while they giggled. He tried one more time and this time, they not only pulled Khushi back but they also pushed Kevin in front of her. They pulled her back again during his third attempt.
Finally annoyed, he stepped up to her, no matter how much they pulled her back until he had the garland around her neck. Cheers, giggles, and claps erupted in the living room of the mansion and the couple then proceeded onto the main marriage customs.
Arnav had absolutely no idea what the priest was saying but he followed the instructions and repeated hymns as he was told. When the time came to do the Pheras, he noticed that Khushi, indeed, was tearful. During the third rotation around the sacred fire, Arnav made eye contact with Payal. The worry in his eyes must have alerted her because she gestured him to relax.
At the end of the seven rotations representing seven vows, Arnav tied the Mangalsutra around her neck and in the process; one of her tears had fallen on his hands. He knew that Payal had warned him about this earlier but what he didn't understand was...why was she crying?
As per the priest's instructions, Arnav pinched a bit of vermillion in his fingers and he gently applied it in the hairline right in the middle of her forehead. Payal was fixing the Tika back in place when her tearful eyes met his worried eyes. He felt somewhat relaxed after she smiled at him gently and made a subtle attempt at wiping the tears.
The two were then handed another set of rings'the wedding bands. Payal and Arnav had chosen these together. Payal had insisted on getting matching wedding bands or the ones that complimented each other. Mr. Mehta had taken the ideas into consideration and had come with very simple yet beautiful wedding bands for the couple.
He held her hand snugly as he slipped on the wedding band on her bare finger. He pulled out the engagement ring that Payal had taken from Khushi from his pocked and slipped in onto her ring finger as well so that it sat snugly next to the wedding band. Khushi smiled at the couple of rings on the slim finger and then slipped on the wedding band on his ring finger as well. She smiled at him one more time, though her eyes were still tearful. He returned the smile and then helped her up to finish the rest of the customs.
That night, Arnav Singh Raizada had changed. That night, he had promised to cherish, protect, and love his wife in sickness and in health, for richer or for poorer. He had promised to keep the smile on her face at all times and eliminate the sorrows of her life. That night he was no longer just a grandson, a son, a brother, or a friend'He was also a husband. That was the first night he'd realized in full totality that Khushi would be by his side for the rest of his life. That was the first night he'd realized that this woman would be the reason the real Arnav would break out of the ASR shell completely. That was the first night he realized how much he hated tears in her eyes.
What he didn't know then was that he'd be the sole reason for the tears she'd shed in the future.
