Arnav's heart:
Arnav stood near the closed bedroom door and looked at Khushi. The stars had been taken down. Her bag was packed, ready on the bed. She stood beside it, a determined smile on her face, a smile that he could see through. Six months of living in the same room with her had taught him a lot about her. And he could now see the bleeding heart behind the smile.
She loved him. To her misfortune. And there was nobody on earth more conscious of the fact that she had been truly, truly unlucky to fall in love with him. A rakshas who had not believed in love or marriage, who cut her with words, mocked her concern for him, believed the worst of her, closed his mind to the good in her so that he could continue to believe the worst of her, a coward who did not have the courage to face and acknowledge the love he had for her, a man who had no trust in her, a man who had put his sister's happiness above every other consideration, even Khushi's life and her family's respect. He had no right to keep her with him. He had to free her. For once, he had to rise above himself, and think of her future.
He was a bad bargain. A man who had believed the words of a worm like Shyam over his instincts about her goodness and innocence, her values, her love for Di, her belief in the institution called family, her willingness to sacrifice her life and happiness for her loved ones... A man who had destroyed her life in one moment... A man who loved her, but didn't know how to show it.
Di was right. The persona of ASR had grown so strong in him that it had almost killed Arnav and Chotey. ASR, a man who had become so used to being right, that he had not felt the need to seek the truth behind what he had seen. A man who had been so proud of his powers of judgement and discrimination that he had not even asked her to account for the hug he had seen on the terrace. A man so blind that Shyam had found it easy to mislead him. He had failed Khushi... He had hurt her by condemning her... without informing her why she was being condemned,... without giving her a chance to explain. Even criminals had a chance to appeal against their sentence. But ASR... but ASR had been so full of himself that he had tried her and sentenced her without proof.
He had thought her capable of having an affair with Di's husband. He had thought her immoral. Her! Khushi...who looked at him with wide eyes and panted as though she had just finished running a mile if he so much as touched her cheek with his finger...She who lacked the sophistication and experience to hide her arousal and love... whose eyelids fluttered if he looked deep into her eyes... who could not hide her concern for him... who touched him whenever she got a chance... his face, cheeks, temple, his neck, his arms, his waist, his legs... under different guises of irking him, teasing him, giving him a teeka, soothing a hurt, tripping and falling... who followed him around the house, and if he left the house for the office, was sure to follow him there on some pretext, just to be with him. Mary and her little lamb, Di and Nani had poked fun at him.
"Arnavji, it is time for me to go. Our six months are over."
"Khushi..."
(UltimateBarun, thank u!)
If she left... He deserved that she should leave... be happy... safe... secure with her family. He had no right to stop her. She had served her sentence. But if she left... He wouldn't know if she needed help... What if she burnt her hand cooking?... He would never be able to see her ... talking to Laxmi... hugging his Di... dancing with his Nani... teasing his Mami...cooking with Payal in the kitchen... listening to Mamaji's tall tales about his young days... laughing at Akash... His shirts would feel lonely without her suits. There would be no one to lay claim to his bathroom in the morning, no one to call him Swami or Laad Governor or Rakshas. The house would fall silent, would feel empty like his heart. He would never be able to hear her laughter, see her smile, watch her eyes brighten at the thought of some absurd plan to irritate him into acknowledging her importance in his life... She would go to Laxmi Nagar, to her family, leaving him alone to miss her. She would cook, crack jokes with Shukla, supply her dabbas to his office, go to meet Devi Maiyya, take care of her father...
She would have a life he wouldn't know anything about. The rays of the sun that burnt his skin would burn hers too. The same moon would shine on both of them. The same wind would ruffle their hair, but she would be far away from him. He wouldn't be able to reach her...
Her beautiful eyes would never look at him...She would never sleep under his roof... She would never fight with him again...The thought was terrifying.
He watched the fingers of her right hand touch the delicate black beads of the mangalsutra around her neck... placed there by him... in anger and the need to mark her as his before the world snatched her from him... but still placed there by him. She was his, only his.
How could he live without hearing her call him Arnavji... the name sweetened by the love she couldn't hide. He couldn't go on if he couldn't touch her, feel the warmth of her silky skin, breathe in the jasmine scent of her warm skin, watch the blood rise in a flush at the simplest of his touches on her hand or cheek, claim to be her husband, demand the rights of her husband in front of the world, keep her close to him, tie her to him, shoot daggers at the world that dared to claim her attention ... She was his. No, the truth was, he was hers. Only hers.
He didn't want to wake up in the morning if he couldn't listen to her talking in her sleep. He didn't want even a cup of tea that she hadn't made. He wouldn't eat if she left... if the food hadn't been prepared by her... if she hadn't made it specially for him with his dietary constraints in mind... if it wasn't tempered with her love... He would just give up on life...
"I have packed my clothes... and my chappals... and bags... and stars", she said, determined to be cheerful. "Will you drop me off in Laxmi Nagar on your way to the office?"
"Khushi..."
"I know you don't have the time... but your family and mine will ask less questions that way..."
She was determined to leave. And he was determined to stop her. All thoughts of selfless renunciation of love, freeing her to lead an independent life, managing without her... all flew out of the window when he saw her turning to take her bag from the bed. She paused midway.
He watched her drag his laptop table over to the door, and moved to the side so that she could do whatever it was that she wanted to do. As long as her bag was on the bed, and she wasn't leaving...she could wreck his room for all he cared...
She clambered on to the table, and stretched her arms up to take the wind chime down.
"I know you hate the sound of this wind chime. I put it up just to rile you. Now... it is time to get rid of it..."
Arnav looked at her, perched precariously on the tiny table, wrestling with the knot high above her head. He strode towards her with a purpose.
