Part 2
After everyone retired to their rooms, Khushi slowly finished up in the kitchen, letting Hariprakashji go home early tonight. She needed some alone time. As she cleaned the dishes, she had been able to put two and two together and realized that Arnav must have found out about her engagement to Shyamji and that he wasn't too happy that she hid the fact from him. She had noticed his behavior with Shyamji over the past month and realized that Arnav knew about them. What she wasn't aware of was Arnav thinking about her supposedly "affair" with Shyam.
If Arnav had found out about her and Shyamji, then why would he marry me? I broke my engagement with him once I found out everything, so why bring me back into this house? she wondered. But then again, she never understood Arnav Singh Raizada's actions. His hot and cold moods had finally driven her over the edge. When she would feel that maybe they could be civil with each other, he tended to throw a bomb and shake her whole world up. Finishing up in the kitchen, she walked into their room and straight towards the bathroom. Grabbing her blanket and pillow, she walked towards the poolside and laid down. She closed her eyes when she felt the tears threatening to spill out. She wasn't going to cry. She had done this for her jiji and she had willingly agreed to do this- not like he had put a gun to her head, even though his threat was no less, but still. She would complete her side of the deal and walk away. What she was going to do after the six months were up, was beyond her but she had enough time to think about that later. Five months to be exact. Now that she wasn't going to be dealing with Arnav, she had a lot more time to think about her future rather than waste her time trying to make him smile or react or try to find out the truth about their marriage. It was already done- the marriage had happened so why bother trying to find out why it happened when it wasn't going to last regardless. Why dream of something that you know you can never get in life? He hated her and that was a fact that she couldn't change.
Arnav sat on the recliner and looked towards her but he couldn't see her face as she had her back towards him. Silence wrapped around him and today he realized, he had crossed his limit with her. His harsh words had undid her patience and he knew she meant every word she said earlier.
The next morning, she got up early and showered before he got up and when she approached the dressor to put her sindoor on, she noticed a red box with her name scribbled on it. Knowing it was from Arnav as his handwriting was absolute chicken scratch, she opened the box and found two dozens of yellow chudiyaan in it. Her lips lifted slightly in a smile, but she got up and put the box in their closet in the corner along with the rest of her chudiyaan and walked out of the room.
The routine continued. She'd wake up every morning before him and shower just so that she didn't have to bump into him while he got ready. Every morning she'd walk up to the dressor and find two dozens of chudiyaan, everyday a different color or pattern but she'd look over them and put them away in their closet. Finally after a month or so, when she turned around to put the box away, she bumped into a rock hard chest and looked up to see Arnav looking down at her, eyes full of remorse.
"Please.." he whispered and shaking her head in a no, she placed the box back to where it belonged. Maybe his real wife can have all these, she thought sadly. Day after day, Arnav would wake up and try to get her to put the choodiyaan on, knowing how much she hated having bare wrists but she was admanant. The silence killed him. He couldn't hear her walking around the house or their room anymore. She had removed the bell things that she had hung up on their door to let her know of his arrival. The stars were taken down from the bed. She had put his room back into it's original condition and lived like she was a pool side guest. If he was lucky, he would hear her at the dinning table talking about something or sometimes in the evening when he would come back home. Sometimes, he didn't even get that. She acted very politely around him but never talked to him and noone seemed to notice the silence between them as Khushi would still do everything for him when everyone was around, just silently now.
By now, Arnav had found out everything about Shyam and he didn't know how to approach Khushi to clear everything up. One night, when he couldn't take it anymore, he walked out to the poolside and sat down on her makeshift bed. Her back was facing him but her uneven breathing told him she was awake.
"I am not going to apologize for what I did, because it's absolutely unforgivable. Remember when we met the first time and you told me your jiji's wedding will break if I don't let you go? You had said something to me that night... agar aapki didi ki shaadi toot jaaye toh? I thought you did this on purpose. I thought you lured jijaji so that you could get back to me for that night"
She turned abruptly hearing his confession. He thought she was having an affair with Anjali Di's husband? She realized at that point that whatever she had said earlier on was true. Arnav Singh Raizada did indeed keep a hisaab kitaab of everything in his life... every single little fricking thing! Anyways, it didn't matter what he thought of her. Giving him a blank stare, she turned back around hoping he would move away before her own tears betrayed her. It didn't matter what he thought of her! He didn't matter! So why in hell did her heart clench thinking that he thought so low of her? She shivered involuntarily and clutched her blanket tighter waiting for him to go away but he didn't.
He didn't know what to do. How was he ever going to fix this? Rage engulfed him and the next thing he felt was a sting on his fist as he punched one of the pots ruthlessly. Khushi jerked hearing the large thud and found him about to punch another pot when she grabbed his arm, a scared look on her face after seeing the immense anger in his eyes. The next second she ran into the bathroom, grabbed the first aid box and bandaged his hand. As she turned around to go back to sleep, she felt his hand on her shoulder.
"It's been over three months now Khushi... please say something. Yell, scream, hit me, push me into this pool, do whatever you want to punish me but please say something... Don't do this" he begged sitting infront of her, his hands folded as she noticed a tear slip down his cheek. Seeing him in this crumpled state, her heart melted and she felt angry at herself. How could her heart betray her like this? This was the same man who had hurt her- emotionally and physically, married her against her will, accused her of being a husband-stealer and still, she couldn't see him suffer. But maybe that's just who she was- a very forgiving and jovial person unlike her calculative husband.
Unknowingly, her hands moved up to brush away his tears and as he felt her hand on his cheek, he looked into her tear filled eyes. She sat across him silently crying and he moved forward and pulled her in a light hug, crying with her, crying over all the time they lost misunderstanding each other.
Silence engulfed them and they both knew time would heal their wounds as the bond that their hearts shared could not be broken so easily.
