CHAPTER 10
Over the next few weeks, Arnav dedicated his life to being nice to Khushi. He secretly hoped that somehow his new appreciation and niceness towards his wife was a form of repention. Like by changing his character now, all the things he had said and done to her before in states of anger will be magically erased and somehow he would be forgiven. But deep down he knew nothing would make it right unless he spoke to her. And even if she may forgive him one day, hypothetically speaking, a one in a million chance, he still wouldn't be able to give her those 3 months of her life back. Nor could he take back all the tears she spilled. Nor could he sew her broken heart back together.
Khushi was very observant and so, within days, she had noticed the metamorphosis that Arnavji had undergone. He smiled at her whenever she brought his morning tea and newspaper. And was that a thank you? The first time she had heard it come from his mouth, she stood frozen on the spot. He said it almost in a whisper. 'Thank you.' And there was no contempt in his voice. Khushi could hear the true gratitide in his voice. It reverberated in her mind for the entire day afterwards. She kept that thank you close to her heart because she felt it was the only one she was getting. But then, the next day, he had said it again. 'No ways,' thought Khushi to herself. 'This can't be right.' And she started rubbing her ears, doubting what they heard. But her ears never deceived her because every day without fail he would thank her for every little task she did. Khushi was dying to just confront him and shake the truth out of him. She wanted to scream at him. But everytimes she attempted to start a conversation with him he would quickly make up an excuse and disappear. It was always work, work, work. So Khushi immersed herself in work and prayer, hoping that due to some miracle, the truth will come out.
Exactly 5 months after their marriage, the Raizada family threw a surprise '5 Monthaversary Party' for Arnav and Khushi with just close family and friends. Even Buaji, Amma and Bauji had come. Khushi was ecstatic! Somehow, seeing her family, she forgot about her sad married life and lost herself in happiness by spending time with her family, especially Bauji. He was still confined to a wheelchair and couldn't speak, but everytime he saw Khushi his face would light and her heart swelled with love. She just knew how much joy he was experiencing by meeting her. Khushi held her Bauji's hand and placed her head in his lap. She wanted to stay like that forever. As the celebrations drew to a close and it was time to bid a farewell to her family, a sadness crept over Khushi. 'Back to reality,' said Khushi, talking to herself. Everyone retired to their bedrooms and after spending some time alone, pondering in the lounge, so did Khushi.
Arnavji was working on his laptop, as usual. When he saw Khushi enter the room, he smiled at her as usual and got back to work. Khushi tried to make small talk. 'Wasn't it sweet of Di to plan this for us, ArnavJi?'
'Jee. Very,' replied Arnav, looking up from his computer and making eye contact with Khushi.
Her heart skipped a beat. After everything that happened, he still had that effect on her. Her mind was spinning. Then it hit her. 5 months married. 1 month before the divorce. 'Just one more month married to me and then you're free to do as you please.'
Arnav stopped typing. There was silence. His hands began to tremble. A tear was threatening to fall from the corner of his right eye but he forced it to stay in place. His mind was racing with thoughts. 'I have to talk to her. Before its too late. What do I do?!' thought Arnav. He didn't reply to Khushi. She was annoyed at this and again said, 'Just one more month and then freedom! You must be happy!'
Arnav forced his mouth shut.
That was enough for Khushi. She didn't care if he didn't want to speak to her but he was going to listen to every word she said. She locked the door and paced towards him. She shut his laptop closed.
'What THE! Khushi! I'm working!'
'That's nothing new. You're always working. I've been trying to talk to you for so many weeks and you're always using work as an excuse to avoid me. Well not today. Today I am going to talk and you are going to listen!'
Arnav feared that this would happen. She would eventually build up the courage to stand up to him and force the truth out of him. His heart raced. He has never been so afraid of the truth before. And he's never been more afraid. He was going to lose Khushi. He just knew it. Why would she still want him after the destruction he has caused to her life?
Arnav tried a last attempt at escaping the conversation. He grabbed his phone and faked a conversation with Aman. This didn't deter Khushi. She simply grabbed his phone and yanked the bluetooth device from his ear and threw it into the pool. 'There's no escaping the truth this time,' thought Arnav to himself.
Khushi walked to Arnav. He watched every step. And as she got closer and closer, Arnav felt the reality of the situation more and more. This was it. Eventually he found himself standing face to face with Khushi Kumari Gupta. Seeing her face reminded him of the first time he had met her. There was fear in her eyes. And also attitude. Hell, this was Khushi Kumari Gupta. The woman he loved. Ofcourse she was persistent. She was his wife after all.
Arnav found himself letting his guard down. He mentally decided that Khushi deserved to know the truth. Whether she hated him or not after that was upto her. But he would promise to make it up to her and try to make things right between them. He was willing to work hard at it because he knew... He won't love any other woman like he does her. Arnav took a deep breath in and breathed out through his mouth. And he did one more thing he had never done before. He closed his eyes asked Devi Maiyan to guide him in his attempts.
Then he opened his eyes and stared into the most beautiful pair of brown eyes he had ever seen.
The time had come.
