Part 4: I Don't Need Proof
Today was the first court date. I helped Khushi run through some drills. I looked through her case. I had underestimated this "Jwala-Mukhi". I stared at her with a smile creeping through my face. Until
"Arnav! Arnav! What the heck?" She yelled while snapping me out of my trance.
"I've been asking you something for the past 5 minutes!!!"
"What?"
"Nothing, forget it. Let's go."
We started to leave when,
"Where are you two going?" the old lady came into the living room.
"Oh, we're leaving now aunty. Thank you for keeping us here during our time of need. Thank you very much." Khushi thanked her.
"No problem my dear but you two can't leave so soon. For the first time in all these years someone came to my house and now they are leaving. Please stay for some more time my children." She said taking our small bag out of Khushi's hand.
"Aunty-ji but."
"Consider this an old lady's request please." She said as she started to fold her hands.
"Aunty-ji, please." Khushi said as she stopped her from folding her hands. "Of course we'll stay." She said with a smile. She was so sweet my Khushi, always thinking of others.
"Thank you bacha, and where are you two going."
"To court aunty-ji actually that is the problem that occurred to us. Everyone thinks that he is a criminal but he isn't, I know it for sure. We are going to court to prove him right. I can't bear to see him like that. The whole world, even our families, had turned our back on us." Her eyes started to tear. "Apparently keeping us and supporting the truth will bring shame to them. It will tarnish their reputation. Since your letting us stay here, I thought you should know this Aunty-Ji. If you have any objection..."
"Beta, of course not. After so many years someone bothered to knock on this old lady's door. You two look like honest kids, may god be with you." She said running her hand over our head in a motherly manner, I don't know why but she seemed a bit too familiar. Her touch, her voice, her food, everything.
We were about to leave when
"Bete! Tika laga ke aur dahi shakar (Yogurt and sugar) to lete jao! (Children, at least leave with a tika and have some yogurt and sugar.)" She said hurrying her way to the door before we left.
She fed a bit to Khushi and then came for me. I retreated at first but then she convinced me.
"Acha shagun hota hai." She said.
I slipped a spoonful of yogurt down without any arguments, she was a nice lady.
***
"Let the case begin."
"Your honor this is a very simple case, I don't know why it has been chosen to be reopened. Like we saw in the last trial, every proof and every point is against Mr. Raizada. He was arrested from the crime sight, he had Mr. Gupta's blood on his clothes, murder weapon was in his hands at the time he was caught by Mrs. Gupta, and his finger prints were on the weapon. Forget proofs, Mr. Raizada was against himself with his Confession of Crime in which he clearly confessed that he had murdered Mr. Gupta. What more is there to discuss, I request the court to end this pointless case right now as we are wasting the precious time of the court." Said Mr. Rane, the prosecutor.
"Thank you for that wonderful opening speech Mr. Rane. Now my lord just like Mr. Rane said, all of these proofs point against my client Mr. Raizada but these points were very briefly discussed during the last hearing. Let me go further into detail. Point number one, Mr. Raizada being there at the crime scene. Let us hear Mr. Raizada out."
I walked over to be questioned.
"So Mr. Raizada, what were you doing there are 3:30 in the morning may I ask?" Mr. Rane asked.
I didn't know if I should say this. I looked at Khushi, she gave me a knowing look.
"I wanted to meet Khushi, I had to return her earring to her."
The court started to laugh.
"Very funny Mr. Raizada. You drove all the way over there to give Khushi back her earring? That seems hard to believe. Are you sure you weren't there to commit the murder?" he asked.
He leaned in closer. "Ya phir koi na-jayaz..."
He saw my fist clench and back away. I couldn't tolerate this anymore, the only reason I was still standing there was because of Khushi and her faith in me.
"Thank you for your testimony Mr. Raizada. You may take your seat." I walked back.
"Now my lord, I would like to provide one more piece of evidence to you." She handed an envelope to the bailiff.
"What you have in your hand are toll records for that night. According to it, there were only 3 vehicles that passed through the toll between 12am-5am. One was Mr. Raizada's, one was a municipal bus, and one was a white unfamiliar van that has been going through this toll for the first time (lets for the story's sake assume that a toll comes along in the way from Arnav to Khushi's house). The other file that is in the envelope has the street picture taken from my street during that night, the same white mysterious van was parked outside my residence BEFORE Mr. Raizada arrived. This is a vital fact that should not be taken lightly. This could mean that maybe the driver of the white van may have committed the murder."
Point one finished, now for points two, three, and four.
Mr. Raizada did have blood on his clothes but it is very possible that he was trying to save Mr. Gupta or he was by him when he was stabbed and the blood splashed. There are countless other possibilities that would and could've led to this situation, the previous trial jumped to conclusions without any solid proof. As for the murder weapon in hand, well that could've been used to remove the knife from Mr. Gupta's chest in attempts to help him. Like I have stated before, this case was fought to abruptly and all of these points were not taken into consideration."
She said as she moved back for her table and picked up the knife in a plastic bag sealed EVIDENCE. The knife that changed my life.
"And this." She said.
"Well a very, very important fact has been found in these finger print reports as well. One that was very easily disregarded and one that shouldn't have." She said as she handed in reports.
"These reports clearly state, that there are an UNKNOWN pair of finger prints on the knife as well. Other than the people of the household and Mr. Raizada, there is ONE MORE unidentified pair of finger prints on the knife. And THIS could be the actual murderers.
There my lord, each of the main points have been proven wrong." Khushi stated simply. I was amazed, it took me a while to actually realize that that was my Khushi. The bholi-bhali, aadhi-pagal Khushi who had so maturely and intelligently handled this. I am very proud of her. The look on Mr. Rane's face was a sight to see."
"Well fought indeed Ms. Gupta but what about Mr. Raizada's confession? Anything to explain that."
"Yes, good question Mr. Rane. Your honor, I spoke with my client and he had a personal reason for hiding the fact. He did not want the true murderer to be caught but now with his permission, I would like to reveal why he did what he did. Actually the murderer is Mr. Jha. Mr. Shyam Jha the new owner of the AR Industries now the SJ industries. Mr. Raizada did not reveal this for personal reasons that we would like to disclose in the next hearing as the time is almost up. Thank you."
"All of the previous arguments of this case have been proven wrong but the vital one, Mr. Raizada's confession of crime, you have failed to explain the reason behind this, since you are placing accusations on Mr. Jha you will have to prove them. 'Till then the court is adjourned for 1 week. The court is closed."
2 lawyers walked towards Khushi and congratulated her for such a good start. I stood there leaning against the pole watching my Khushi. Her eyes were on me the whole time. She slowly made her way to me.
"Chale?"
"Chelye." I replied. She was so modest and acted as if nothing had happened a few minutes ago. I'm sure if it was someone else, than they would've asked for as many compliments as possible and there was my Khushi asking me
"Bhook lagi hai?"
"Yes." I replied.
Let's get home quickly then. The said as she tried to stop a rickshaw but received scorn and insults from the Rickshaw driver instead.
"Hum khooni logo ko upni Rickshaw main nahi betne dete." (I don't let murderers sit in my Rickshaw.) Shyam ne badnami spread karne main koi kasar nahi chodi. (Shyam did his best to spread the badnami.)
She turned around and I tried to hide my disappointment. I was disappointed because she had to go through this because of me. She could've walked away like everyone else- selfish and conceited, only caring about themselves and so-called respect, but she didn't. There was my family and my Di who believed everything without a second thought and then there was Khushi she didn't even leave me when I confessed myself. She deserved better.
She walked up to me. "Koi baat nahi. Let's walk, walking good for your body." How did she notice it so quickly when even Di couldn't sometimes? How could she be so optimistic? After hearing all of this crap I'm sure she's hurt too.
"Khushi." That was it. I couldn't see her in this pain anymore. Not anymore.
"You don't have to do this. I can't see you suffer like this. Please just leave me be and return to your life."
She looked at me with fierce bloodshot red eyes. She was so mad she could've slapped me. "Arnav." She said as she held on to my face. "You are my life and I am not leaving it anytime soon." She said as she held on to me as if her life depended on it. I stroked her back slightly. We could've been in an embrace for eternity if we didn't realize we were on the streets. She let go reluctantly and started blushing. She turned the other way. Could someone be nay cuter? I saw her blushing reflection in the window of a shop we were passing.
"You don't need to hide yourself, I think you look cute when you blush." I said nonchalantly looking up at the sky.
She looked at me and turned an even darker crimson red. She decided it was my turn to feel the heat now.
"Waise, aunty told me that you said we were married? Why is that Arnav?" she asking in a teasing voice. It had been so long since we had been able to talk so freely and happily.
"Because..." I struggled to find an answer. What was I to say, because I love you? She knew that but that didn't mean I had to say she was my wife. I could've said friend, acquaintance, lawyer, anything. It just felt right to call her my wife.
"Bas, bas, even you are starting to blush." She said pointing to my face. I turned around trying to hide it.
"Now, now. Tum bhi blush kate hua kafi cute lagte ho." She teased and walked further along. I looked my pagal Khushi. She turned around gesturing me to walk faster.
We got home. Aunty-ji left a note on the fridge. "I have gone to the temple, the food's on the first shelf in the fridge. I have already eaten. Take care bachas, I'll be back soon."
Khushi served the food and fed it to me with her own two hands. It made the food taste better; I purposely sucked on her fingers a bit giving her a dhak-dhak that even I could hear.
Khushi was washing the dishes and I watched her from a distance. If ma were still alive, she would've loved Khushi. She was practically my wife and so I wanted to make it official. I walked over to our room and got out the bad and found some of my few possessions that I had kept throughout all of this. My ma's kangan and the mangalsutra she had saved for her daughter-in-law. I kept them in aunty-ji's pooja.
"Khushi, yahan ao to! (Khushi come here please!)"
"What is it Arnav?" She said as she walked out wiping her hands with a towel.
She stood in front of me and I knew I had to do this. "Khushi," I started as I held out the kangans. "You have been with me through everything." I said slipping the kangan down one of her soft hands. "You always stand beside me no matter what." I said slipping the other kangan down her other hand. "You have done everything that a wife does for her husband." I said leaning down towards her face to put the mangalsutra on her. I didn't miss her silent gasp. "You are like my Sita hopefully throughout life, I will prove to be your Ram." I closed the clasp on the mangalsutra. "I don't know what the future will be like, but I want you in it, with me forever." I said holding the sindoor in my hands. "I love you Khushi and I want you to be my wife." I said filling her mang. "Forever." I said looking at my Khushi who now looked complete. Her eyes were tearing up. She hugged me as tight as possible. I hugged her back trying not to cry. She looked up at me still crying. "I love you too Arnav," was all she could manage out. She was still in state of shock. She couldn't believe this. I could just tell. Her reaction was justified because all of this happened so suddenly. I picked her up and took her to now officially "our" room and laid her on the bed. Today was the day the wait ended. I was going to fulfill the desire that we had both held back within us. I was going to fulfill destiny.
I leaned it taking control of her lips and her senses. I came back up taking her lips with me. She leaned against the frame of the bed. I pushed away her hair that was covering her eyes. I slid down towards her neck and nipped it slightly. I heard a small moan come out of Khushi's mouth. I continued to adorn her neck with my lips. I felt a rush of desire when I felt her hands make their way up to make hair pulling me closer to her. The sound of the Kangan's gave me joy. She finally felt completely mine. Her lips began the assault on me creating havoc in my senses. They made their way to my face, my checks, my eyes, and back where they belonged, my lips.
The desire grew stronger and now I was completely on top of her. I got up a bit to remove my shirt still not breaking any eye contact with Khushi. Her shy eyes wanted to look away but she couldn't. I leaned back in fitting my body right next to her. Her hands made their way up to my back and etched a beautiful painting on my back with her nails. My hands started roam around her body and got to her back. They slowly untied the dori of her blouse as it was obstructing my ability to view her full being. Gently I took it off revealing a half unclothed Khushi in front of me. My blushing bride was indeed blushing. Her face was dark crimson red when I began my side of the assault. I made-love to her soft breasts when she pulled me back to her face and hugged me tight. I hugged her back.
"I'm not going anywhere Khushi." I said stroking my face to the side of her neck. Her hands once again ran through my hair. I removed the rest of her sari and the last piece of clothing that was left on her body exposing me to a completely bare Khushi. I noticed a few hickeys I had given her start to redden. She gave me a knowing look when I had finally consummated our marriage and our love. I made sure she wasn't hurt by this though; I made it a point to be gentle with her fragile body until she was physically ready for more. Honestly speaking this was my, Arnav Singh Raizada the most eligible bachelor's first time too. Virginity was an important thing and I wasn't going to give it freely to anyone and I am happy with my decision because there wasn't a better way to give it up. Khushi's moans were causing mayhem to my senses. Everything we were going through, all the problems, the worries, everything didn't matter anymore. Khushi was with me and that's all that mattered.
The rest of the night went through blissfully. I woke up around 2am and looked around the room that held the memories of our first night. Clothes were scattered across the room, the sheets were ruffled a bit, Khushi had a tight grip on my hand even in her sleep. She was in a deep slumber next me with only ma's kangan, her mangalsutra, and sindoor on. I looked outside the window and felt a breeze softly hit my face. I was probably the most peaceful I had ever been in my entire life right now. Today I found a reason to live, a reason to breathe, a reason to exist. I was going to get back everything that was mine for Khushi and give her all that she rightfully deserves, I was going to avenge Khushi's badnaami, and I was going to make that ba*tard pay for everything he did.
I wrapped my arm around Khushi pulling her closer to me trying to be as quiet as possible but she still noticed.
"Ut gaye aap?"
"Hmm." I replied snuggling closer to while intertwining our fingers together,
"Neend nahi aa rahi?"
"Pata nahi."
"Ji?"
"Kuch nahi. How are you feeling?"
"Fine. Wonderful actually."
"Is that a blush I see?"
"No." she said trying to hide her face with her hair. I cupped her face and lightly pecked her lips and felt a light response from her.
We heard a loud sound. It sounded like something fell. I quickly slipped my boxers and trousers on and ran out to the living room while buttoning my shirt. Khushi followed shortly behind. It was nothing but some bartans that got knocked down by the strong winds. Khushi rushed to close the windows. I caught her from behind by surprise. I was just beginning to taste her neck when she stopped me.
"What are you doing Arnav ji? What if Aunty-Ji comes."
"Fine." I said as I walked away making a fake pouty face.
"Speaking of Aunty, look her room's door is still open. She must be getting cold." I said as I walked over to the door to close it when I noticed that she wasn't there.
"Aunty-ji?" I said as I walked in slowly. I looked around but she wasn't there. I came out of the room.
"Aunty-ji? Aunty-ji?" I yelled out with no response.
"What happened Arnav."
"Aunty-ji's not here Khushi." I said as we hurried out of the house going to look for her. She had gone to the mandir but she couldn't possibly still be there.
"AUNTY-JI!" we both yelled at the same time looking at the horrid sight in front of us.
