Last Part
Khushi turned around slowly, looked at him, with imploring eyes, almost willing him to understand on his own so that she won't need to say it all. For she knew it will totally shatter Arnav, whom she had come to love completely and irrevocably. The separating of their paths from this point onwards was clearly apparent but no way could she keep this from them anymore. Khushi's integrity and forthright attitude to life won't ever let her live in peace if she kept this from him.
Arnav looked at her, searching her face for an answer, with her conversation running in his mind. His eyes widened as all the pieces of the jigsaw fell in place. "No! No, no!" he repeated in a low voice laden with grief, "tell me what I am thinking is utterly wrong, tell me you were not just talking about Shayam Jha? Tell me it's not the same Shayam Jha Di is married to?" he kept questioning her, holding her by the shoulders with a tight grip and shaking her as if to choke out the answers he wanted to hear. With a jerk he left her to get up, he held his head with his hands in complete anguish, "No! it can't be!" he growled looking up.
Khushi wanted to go and comfort him but knew he was beyond that right now, all she could do was pray for him which she did with her eyes closed. Her eyes flew open at the loud crash of shattering glass. Arnav had just thrown a heavy paper weight at the office window breaking it into tiny pieces and he stood in front of the office desk hands on it for supporting himself. He had his back towards her but she could hear his ragged breathing broken by what she suspected were suppressed sobs. She felt as if her heart had been squeezed and she couldn't breathe, she grieved for him, for his grief. She got up, slowly walked up behind him, and put her hand on his shoulder to comfort him only to be held in a ribs crushing hug. Aware that he needed comfort to regain some semblance of sanity back, she slowly raised her arms to encircle him, she rubbed his back lightly, passed her fingers through his hair gently, trying to soothe him, placate him, and console him.
His rage had no bound, he wanted to destroy everything around him, just like his grief had no bound, he wanted to annihilate everything that caused it, he wanted to cry for his sister but his eyes were dry. He had kept his emotions in check for such a long time now. He held on to khushi like she was his life support but then irrational anger took over him, he held her by the shoulders and pushed her back looking at her with uninhibited fury, "Now! Now you are telling me!" he growled in undertones. "How could you deceive us like this? And you waited till your jiji was safely married'" he continued with his irrational accusations.
All through khsuhi kept moving her head, silently denying the accusations being hurled at her, tears rolling down her eyes, her voice lost and her heart,''' it felt like lead, heavy and lifeless, as if the grief would make it come apart any moment. She felt as if someone had taken away all her strength and sucked the life out of her. With a jerk he let her go and turned around to bang his fist on the table, and didn't hear the soft thud of her falling down. A splinter pierced through her hand, but she was beyond feeling so not even a little groan escaped her lips. She stood up quietly, and walked towards the door taking small lifeless steps. She turned around to look at him for one last time, said a silent goodbye and went out to never come back again.
Arnav stood with his back towards her, uncaring, he knew she was walking away from him but stubbornly he kept her back to her. Although he felt each step she took away from him on his heart but he was unable to think straight. He heard the click of the door and turned around slowly. The room reverberated with her presence, his heart felt empty, listless, dull as if it had lost everything valuable. The Khushi of the past few days had evaporated leaving behind it the same black hatred he always had for the world. He slowly walked back to the futon and sat down to consider what was to be done. Minutes slipped into hours, he ignored all the calls not bothering to even cancel them. Nothing could budge him from that place.
It was full three hours later that Khushi entered the Gupta house quietly; she had walked all the way here. She had wanted to be all by herself. She went to her room and locked the door behind her and sat down crying yet again silently. It took her a while to realize that everything was so silent around her. She got up and went out to look for everyone, just then she saw her family entering, smiling and laughing. Her world had toppled upside down and they all looked as if nothing had happened. "Where were you all?" she asked agitatedly, "At the Raizada house, where else sanka devi, leave us, where were you? Your cell was powered off! Were you at the mandir??" asked Buaji. "Waass everything okay at the Raizada house?" she asked cautiously. "aray, why wouldn't everything be okay over there" came an unexpected answer, "it was more than okay, Arnav had planned a surprise for our Payalia, they have just left for a long honeymoon trip. Even Akaash bitwa didn't know" buaji laughed enjoying the news. "kyaaa?" Khushi asked totally bemused. "ohoo parmeswarii you don't understand anything in one go, Payal and Akaash have gone for a long honeymoon trip and not only that Akash bitwa's babuji and Maataji have also gone to some place, pata nai kya naam tha' aur haan Naniji and Anjali have also gone with them. And Arnav will join them in some days, koi zaroori kaam hai uss ko yahan." Bua gave one baffling news after another. "Atleast make some tea for us now", said Garima.
http://youtu.be/O3-WOAkFeT4 (do not know how to embed 😭)It had been such a long time since he had set foot in her house, last time it was the night when Akaash and Payal were getting married and Khsuhi had called him and then what followed was nothing less than a storm. And today he again stood in Khushi's house not knowing what will happen and so much had happened since then. "Will she forgive me for being such a cad? For treating her like a dirt bag, for alienating her from his life.." many questions bombarded his mind. He could clearly remember all the details of that day. He had sat in his office for a long time planning on what to do. Only moments after Khushi had left he had regretted his outburst, she had been very honest and open. He had remembered the anxiety written all over her face before she had delved into the truth telling. Yet he had accused her of breaking his trust, he had felt too bad for her but he knew he had to deal with Shayam first. He couldn't let this man be near his Di anymore now.
His business had taught him a lot of things; he planned his line of action shrewdly. With the kind of reputation and status he held, it wasn't difficult for him to arrange everything. He got everyone out of his way; it was so easy to convince everyone. That left Shayam alone in Delhi for him. Shayam hadn't minded staying back for he found this a good opportunity to woo Khushi, Arnav grimaced at this thought. He remembered how Shaym groveled in front of him, pathetically he begged to be forgiven, he even tried to put all the blame on Khushi for trying to entice him and for this he received a much deserved punch on the face that broke his nose, he was already black and blue from the blows Arnav had given him in his fury. Arnav had used his connection with the police to make sure he never returned to Delhi. He had tried his best to keep it hushed because people loved to talk and he couldn't have his Di suffer that.
It hadn't been easy for him to break it to Di, he remembered the long walks they had taken in London trying to bring her out of her grief. How hard it had been for him to convince her that there was nothing wrong with her, her old esteem issues had surfaced. All the sleepless nights he had spent with Di on the couch just holding her, wiping off her tears, listening to her sobs. Two months, it had taken her to return to some sort of normalcy. She still broke into tears whenever anything reminded her of him even though he had taken care of removing any sign of the slimeball from the RM. And now he stood here in Khushi's house on the first day of his return to Delhi. He had forbidden Payal from informing the Guptas of what had happened. He didn't know whether he will be forgiven or not but he wanted to see her more than anything else in the world. Payal's wedding album had been on his night stand ever since.
Khushi walked out of her room into what she thought was a dream for she was sure that the only way she could see him was in dreams. She just stood there staring at him, drinking in every detail of the face she loved,
that this love hurt a lot didn't matter to her.
That this love was unattainable was something she had accepted.
That it made her incapable of ever loving someone else didn't bother her.
That it meant a long lonely life didn't bother her.
"Khushi!" Arnav took a step towards her. She looked like a ghost right now, "what had happened to her?" he panicked. "What did I do!" he moaned inwardly, making a fist. He slowly walked towards her not wanting to shock her; very lightly he held her hand and led her to her room. He looked around for something to sit on and took her towards the bed and sat down with her. He shook her shoulder lightly as if to wake her up. "you!" was all she could manage as her eyes welled up with tears that rolled down without effort. Arnav cursed himself for doing this to her and took her in his arms with one swift movement, he moved closer and lifted Khushi effortlessly to make her sit on his lap to trying to comfort her, "I am sorry for saying all that I did," came a simple apology, for he was a man of few words. Khushi's body shook with her sobs. He planted light kisses on her head trying to comfort her and held her tightly. Finally when she had shed all her tears, she looked up at him with hundreds of questions in her eyes. He again hugged her tightly and with her head pressed on to his chest and his chin resting lightly o her head he told her all that had happened. Her arms too tightened around him as he told her how devastated Di was and her long stay in the hospital.
"I am sorry," she whispered in his chest. "No!" he stopped her, moving her head backwards to look at her face. "you did nothing wrong, do you understand? Never again are you going to say sorry for anything that has happened!" he gritted his teeth. "I. I am the one who should be sorry for doing what I did to you on that day!" his voice had a ragged edge to it. She combed his hair with her fingers trying to ease out the pain from his eyes. "Can you ever forgive me?" he asked quietly, softly in a whisper almost afraid. Khushi looked into his eyes, the eyes that melted her, that had tormented her for the past few months; she had accepted that she won't ever be able to look into them. Her fingers inadvertently caressed his face, fingering each and every detail, she whispered, "No," she continued as she felt Arnav go all tense, "for there is nothing to forgive.."
Arnav could feel all the tension of the past ebb away, he felt as if his heart had just found home in khushi's, his eyes softened as they filled up with love for his love right there in front of him, in his arms. He tried to smile, for it was hard for him after the long grimness, and gave Khushi a crushing hug, not wanting to let her go, trying to fill in the emptiness that had been there for so long now. "Do you'can you.." he tried to ask, "will you ever return the love I have for you?" he confessed in the strangest of all ways. Khushi just looked into his eyes for some time and said, "What are you looking at Mr. Arnav Singh Raizada? Can't you see that I have been knee deep in love with you for so long?" she confessed matching his style. Arnav laughed out loud feeling light and Khushi just melted in his arms.
