very nice part ...Ridhima cant see anything beyond Armaan ...even while thinking of her baby her thoughts were of what possible resemblance will be between the baby and Armaan...pl Shardha don't end this ff.. you can go for your vacation and come back and continue we wouldn't mind irregular updates...but we want to see how Armaan pampers Ridhima during her pregnancy and much much more..pls continue soon and thanks for the pm

Part 67

It had been 10 days since Armaan and Riddhima had returned to Karan's house. When Linda went for her check up that day, the doctor felt that the baby was already quite big. If they waited any further, delivery might become very difficult. So they asked her to get admitted and started inducing pain. Karan called home to inform his amma and dad about the doctor's decision.

Yes, now Karan also called her amma. The day after Riddhima and Armaan had returned, Arun had called on the landline number and Karan had picked it. After talking to his bro when Arun said "Give the phone to amma," Karan asked "What are you saying Arun? Do you mean perima?" "Yes, I'm allowed to call her amma" Arun replied just to rile his bro. After the call an angry Karan had charged his perima of being partial to her younger son. According to him as the elder son rightfully he should have got the rights first.

His perima's words "He asked me permission to call me amma and I couldn't refuse" wasn't acceptable to him. Then his dad had intervened saying "What's in a name? As Shakespeare said "A rose by any other name will smell as sweet," so also Riddhima has always been your amma, though you called her perima." Finally after a lot of cajoling by Riddhima he had given up his anger and from then on started calling her "amma". Not only he even Linda had started calling her amma.

Initially Linda used to find it irritating to have Riddhima attending to her every need, even before she could express it. Food would be ready by the time she got home. Lunch pack with Greek yogurt, fresh fruit, nuts, trail bars etc would be waiting for her when she walked in for breakfast. Breakfast was her favourite cereal but with addition of nuts/fresh berries. Riddhima didn't hesitate to even make Linda's favourite chicken soup, and served it piping hot when she came back from work. All this made Linda really wonder whether her own mother would have done half as much, had she been with her.

"We'll be there right away kanna, till then take care of Linda" Riddhima assured him. He asked them to fetch the bag which they had kept ready with baby clothes etc. Riddhima first prayed to her Lord Ganesha for her daughter-in-law's safe and easy delivery and soon they were on the way to the hospital.

The doctor and his assistant came and checked Linda's progress from time to time and seemed quite satisfied, though Linda was in a lot of pain. When Karan questioned the doctor about the severe pain she was going through the doctor said "Her dilation is progressing as well as can be expected. She should deliver in another 3- 4 hours. Once the cervix is dilated to 4-5 centimeters, we'll administer the epidural. Then she won't feel the pain. Till then she'll have to bear the discomfort."

Karan sat holding her hand and brushing aside the hair which was blowing over her face. Soon Riddhima and Armaan arrived there. "Looks like our angel is in a hurry to see the world" Riddhima joked to take Linda's mind away from the pain. She sat chatting about the baby's arrival, making even the lady in labour smile. The only thought in Linda's mind now was that she'd soon have her newborn baby in her arms.

After half an hour the assistant doctor came to check her and shooed all of them out. A few minutes later the anesthesian came and the epidural was administered. Things were cruising along smoothly, when all of a sudden, Linda started gasping. The nurse panicked and rushed to call the doctor. The doctor literally ran in, closely followed his assistant with the stretcher. Linda was taken to the labour room, with Karan in tow. Riddhima and Armaan got worried seeing everyone rush about, but didn't know whom to ask.

When they entered the labour room, they asked Karan to wait outside. The assistant doctor immediately fixed the oxygen mask to ease Linda's breathlessness. But she starting tugging at that too as she was far from comfortable. On one side, the doctor and his assistant were wondering what could be the reason for this sudden change in the patient's condition and at the same time discussing about the baby, which was stuck in the passage. Linda was not in a condition to push any further, so they'd have to go in for a C section only. Operating at this stage was very tricky because of the baby's position, but they couldn't wait any further as Linda was getting to be more breathless.

Instructing his assistant to get Linda ready for the surgery, the doctor went outside and in front of Armaan and Riddhima, explained the situation to Karan. He said he'd do his best to save the baby, but he couldn't promise anything as the baby might get suffocated, stuck as it was.

All of them were shocked by his frank talk, and Karan was totally shattered. He slumped down on the bench pale and speechless. Riddhima sat beside him and opening her bag removed something from it. Then thrusting it in Karan's hand said "He's never let me down till today and I'm sure he'll take care of our family's angel also." Karan opened his palm and saw a cute little silver Ganpathy. Just then the assistant doctor came out saying "Karan, the operation is about to start, if you wish you could get a sterilized coat and join us inside." Riddhima immediately pushed him saying, "Keep the Ganesh idol in your pocket and go in, he'll take care of everything."

Karan rushed to the sterilization room, donned the coat and cap handed over by the nurse and entered the OT. He went to Linda and clutched her hand whispering "Everything's going to be fine." She smiled at him through the mask and nodded to show him that she was ok now. She was unaware of what the doctor had said about their baby and was therefore relaxed. But when the baby was pulled out and it didn't cry, she became tensed. "Doctor how's the baby? Why isn't she crying?" she shouted in a panicked voice. "Page Dr. Maria" the chief doctor barked instructions to his assistant.

Asst: I already have, she should be here any minute now.

Then turning to Linda he assured her "Don't worry the nurses are attending to her and the pediatrician is on her way. Your baby will be fine." Seeing tears collect in her eyes, Karan clutched her hand tighter and said "Don't cry Linda, everything's gonna be fine. He removed the Ganesh from his pocket and pressing it into her hand said "Amma says He'll take care of everything. Have faith, God is with us. At the same time, in his mind, he prayed desperately "God please save my baby."

Outside Riddhima sat with her eyes closed and hands joined. She was reciting the Ganesh shlok. She had vowed to repeat it 108 times for the baby's and Linda's welfare. Armaan saw a female doctor rush into the OT. Seeing everyone rush like that made the situation more tensed. When he tried talking to a nurse who came out of the OT, she point blank refused to say anything. That got him more worried. But Riddhima sat praying continuously unaware of what was going on around her.

The lady doctor went and picked the baby. Then holding her upside down thumped her back hard. Karan was shocked to see her beat the tiny baby like that. It brought tears to his eyes. He was about to protest saying please don't treat my baby so, when the tension in the room was broken by a loud wail.

The chief doctor nodded to the female doctor and she nodded in return. Seeing Karan still confused the assistant doctor said "Congratulations Karan, your baby is fine." "And so is your wife added the chief doctor" pulling out his mask and gloves having completed the suturing. Karan and Linda hugged each other, tears pouring down their eyes, but a joyous smile adorning their lips.

The assistant brought the baby wrapped in a blanket and said "She's a beauty." Karan held her clumsily and placed her beside Linda, who bent to place her cheek on her forehead. She remembered the doctor's instructions during one of the sessions saying no one is to kiss the baby on the face. Karan also copied her. Then the assistant asked Karan to take the baby outside while they dressed Linda and took her to the ward.

Karan happily carried the baby out of the OT and went and placed her on his amma's folded hand. Riddhima immediately opened her eyes and exclaimed "My God! She's so cute!" Hearing her Armaan who was standing near the window, turned and rushed to them. "Athaan, she looks exactly like Karan na?" Armaan nodded and smiled holding the baby's closed fist. Karan told them in short all that had transpired in the OT in a matter of seconds.

"I told you na, trust him and he'll work miracles" Riddhima beamed at Karan. He hugged her and putting his cheeks against her said "Yes ma, you were absolutely right." Suddenly the baby began to whimper and opening her mouth turned towards Riddhima. "Ay Rajati, I'm not your mother" Riddhima teased her. Then handing her to Karan she said "I think she's hungry." Karan cooed over her as he took her to the nurse, who in turn took the baby to the mother, to be fed.

The happy trio excitedly discussed about the baby's name which had to be finalised in a day or two, as it had to be entered in the birth certificate.

R: Have you thought of a name for her?

K: Ya, we thought we'd name her Caroline.

R: That's very nice! Karan and Linda's daughter – Caroline. Whose choice was it? Linda's or yours?

K: Actually, before we knew the sex of the baby, we had decided that if it was girl, I would name her, and if it was a boy she'd choose his name. But later, when we came to know it's a girl, each of us drew up a list and finally we zeroed on the name 'Caroline'. But now-a-days it's a fashion among Indians to give the child a second name. I believe in olden days it was practice to give the baby its grandparent's name.

R: Yes, it was. But nobody does so now since they feel those names are ancient. Everyone wants a short, modern name now.

K: I was thinking why not name her Caroline Riddhima?

R: That's very sweet of you Karan, but it wouldn't be fair.

K: Unfair? To whom?

R: Your mother, Karuna. All said and done, she carried you in her womb for nine months. You saw what Linda went through just now. She must also have gone through all this pain to give birth to you. How happy she must have been when she held you in her arms for the first time? Her first born, her flesh and blood.

Karan put his eyes down and said "But amma," Even before he could complete Riddhima asked "haven't you heard the saying 'To Err is Human and to Forgive Divine'? She had finally realized her mistake and wanted to make amends for it. But life didn't give her a chance or time for it. That's why she has come back now, as your darling daughter, to win your love. So that you won't be able to be angry with her anymore."

Both Armaan and Karan looked speechlessly at her. It's normally said the size of a person's heart is as big as their closed fist. But this petite woman's heart must be 10 times that, thought Karan. Or else how would she be able to talk so convincingly in defense of a woman who had devastated her life? But he wasn't yet prepared to call his daughter Karuna. So he non committaly said "I'lltalk to Linda bout it."

As they sat talking about what had happened a few hours ago, with tears in his eyes Karan said "For a few minutes in the OT, I thought I'd lost my Caroloine." Holding his hand Riddhima said "This should be the last time you ever think of those minutes. Erase it from your memory. You should be proud that your daughter is such a fighter. She didn't give up easily did she?"

After a few minutes the nurse came out and said that they could go in and meet Linda. When they entered, she was holding the baby in her arms and cooing over her. Side hugging Linda and kissing her forehead, Riddhima congratulated her. "She's cho cute na amma?" "Absolutely" Riddhima replied. But all three of them turned around hearing Armaan laugh out loudly. Seeing them staring at him, he explained "don't mistake me, but it was like hearing Riddhima's words from Linda's mouth. Riddhima uses 'na' a lot so I burst laughing seeing that Linda had also started using it."

Noticing Riddhima glare at him he went over to the other side and putting his hand on Linda's head said "Thanks for bringing in the next generation of this family. May God fulfill all your dreams and aspirations. Then putting his other hand on Karan'shead said "May you both spend many many happy years with your darling daughter. I know unlike me, you'll be a wonderful father."

Hugging his emotional dad Karan said "You are going to compensate for all that by being the most wonderful grandfather." Everyone was in smiles admiring the cute sleeping beauty. When the pediatrician came to check on her a concerned mother asked her "Doctor is everything fine with the baby? She didn't cry immediately," "Oh your daughter's an attention grabber for sure. She just wanted to make a grand entry." Dismissed Dr. Maria making everyone laugh.

After sometime, Riddhima and Armaan left for home after Linda was given a sedative and fell asleep. Riddhima offered to stay asking Karan to go home and rest. But he wouldn't listen. "I'll sleep here" he said pointing to the other bed in the room. "And I can get whatever I want to eat from the canteen. So don't worry. You take rest and I'll call you from time to time."

That evening, when Armaan and Riddhima came to the hospital, Karan's friends were all there. They were oohing and aahing over the baby and Karan was telling them how his cutie pie had scared them all. "It was just a miracle" he concluded and they all agreed. "Such mein Karishma hi to hai" one of his North Indian friends said.

Karan jumped at once saying "Yes, that's it." Turning to Linda he asked "Doesn't Caroline Karishma sound wonderful?" then noticing his amma and dad, came up to them and said "Amma, it's a superb name na, merging mummy's and your name? Karishma, Karuna's and Riddhima's granddaughter! Yes!" he shouted with joy. "You owe me a grand treat dude for finding that apt name" his friend butted in and then pandemonium broke loose with all of them demanding a grand treat from Karan.

I have read the last 3/4 parts in a go as i was in vacation and was hoping to comment before the lat part.
Everything was beautiful, superbly written.
Reading Karuna's letter to Ridhima i really feel bad for her. What a mental condition she was in during her last days. finally the accident truth was out to everyone and now Karan and Arun doesn't blame Arman for their mother's death.
It was emotional seeing both the boys loved Ridhima so much and started calling her amma . The baby's birth was really painful and the name was really sweet ...

I feel really sad that this is coming to an end but as they say "every good things will end " .
