Part 62

"Shekar" Armaan shouted to stop him from saying anything further. When all of them stared at him, he said "Let's go upstairs and get the job for which we called Kalpana and Shekar here, done."

Kal: What job are you making us do? Remember we are quite old now.

A: As I told you I'm disposing things before putting this house on sale. I thought perhaps you'd like to have something of Karuna's, as a memory of her."

S: Armaan you've revealed so many truths today, don't you think your children have the right to know the truth about Karuna too?

Armaan looked flustered and said "Of course they know everything Shekar, and I'm sure we've talked enough for one day." Riddhima could see that her athaan was trying to hide something. Perhaps he didn't want her to know that truth about Karuna, she thought. So she said, "Come on, all of you go up and get the job of clearing the closets done. Otherwise time will pass off talking about old rubbish and the job at hand won't get done."

K: Aren't you coming upstairs?

R: Only your mummy's things are left to be sorted out. I don't think I'm required there. I'll see if I can rustle up something for lunch.

K: We are done with looking through mummy's things. Dad and perima-peripa can handle that. We'll help you here. What say Arun?

Arun: Absolutely. Karan will take care of the cleaning. He's very fond of vacuuming. I'll take care of the lunch. I'll make some soup and salad for our diet conscious guests and you prepare some typically 'Riddhima perima's Indian food' for all of us.

Armaan moved upstairs with the guests. As soon as they entered Karuna's room Armaan locked up the door and said "Please Shekar, Kalpana, I want you to promise that you won't mention to anyone that the accident had occurred because of Karuna's fault, especially not to the boys. It's only because the police had recorded Karuna's statement before she died, that you learnt about it. I'm sure even you wouldn't have believed it if I had told you about it. Though I had made you both promise that you won't ever reveal the truth to anyone, you were just about to break it."

S: But Armaan, why?

A: Shekar, after learning the truth about Riddhima struggling alone without a penny, the boys must be having a very poor opinion about Karuna and me. If they learn the truth about the accident also, they might almost hate her. She doesn't deserve that. She was ill, she was depressed and that is why she did that. All said and done, she was their mother.

S: But Armaan, to purposely cause an accident just to kill you?

A: That shows how ill she was. She didn't even realize that in the process she herself would also be killed. But see the irony of it; I survived and she died.

S: But how did her depression progress to such an extent?

A: Actually, I'm to be blamed for her illness. I didn't give her enough attention. She pushed me away and I stayed away. I didn't even try to find the reason behind it. I'm the reason for spoiling the life 2 women, the two women who really loved me. I honestly didn't deserve either of them.

At that his eyes welled up. He tried to discreetly flick away the tears but both of them noticed it and Kalpana said "No Armaan, don't blame yourself. My mother was the actual villain. Karuna's only mistake was that she implicitly trusted her. I shouldn't talk ill of my own mother, especially when she's dead, but I'm sure she was responsible for Karuna changing her opinion about you. She had suddenly started becoming very insecure about you and the kids. When I had asked her to come and settle in America immediately after your marriage, she had refused saying you both were happy there. But since my mother started staying with you, she slowly changed her mind and even persuaded you about settling in the US.

A: Actually in the beginning she said it would only be a temporary shift so that I could qualify further and then we'd return to India. But later she didn't want to go back and I was also tempted because of the huge money I was earning here.

Kal: But even after coming here she wasn't very happy. It was perhaps her guilt of having left Riddhima alone after all that she had done for her and her kids. But at the same time she was also jealous of Riddhima. She used to wonder whether you both were in touch through letters or phones.

A: But the fact is I was truly loyal to her. I used to feel even thinking about Riddhima was being disloyal to her. And it was to appease my conscience that I used to remind her of the money transfer exactly on the first of every month. I used to feel I was doing my duty to Riddhima and therefore need not feel guilty about it. After all she only got us married. But I really had no idea that Karuna felt so insecure. She never spoke to me about that.

Kal: She often asked me whether she had made a mistake by not forcing you to divorce Riddhima. My mother kept scaring her that you'd leave her and go back to your first wife. So she had this constant fear at the back of her mind. I tried to reassure her that Riddhima was out of your life, but you know my mother, she kept harping that she must save money in case of such eventuality. She made her open a separate account for herself and siphon out amount from your account. Though Karuna told me about it, I never interfered. Even transferring amount to her Chennai account, must have been my mother's idea only. Probably as a back-up fund. I think Karuna wouldn't have even been aware of it. Otherwise why would she argue with you when you instructed her to transfer it?

A: Ya, I remember now, your mother never sided her in that matter. On the contrary she used to act very sweet in front of me saying that she shouldn't begrudge the poor thing, a few dollars.

Kal: I didn't like my mother's habits. Hence I didn't encourage her to come and stay with us. So she stuck to Karuna and made her life miserable.

A: But after your mother died, Karuna withdrew into a shell. She wouldn't talk to anyone and didn't even bother to serve me food when I came home late. I too left her alone and we were like two strangers in the same house. I even shifted into the bedroom downstairs, as she used to get very irritated when I switched on the lights, when she was asleep.

Kal: She must have missed our mother very much because she was her only companion. Even the boys weren't very close to her. She told me Karan had questioned her about Riddhima once and had expressed his sympathy for his perima, who had been so selfless. That's when she really started feeling depressed. She felt even her children preferred Riddhima to her and that nobody loved her except our mother. That's why she started leaning more and more on her shoulder. Suddenly that person was also taken away from her. So she went into severe depression and her hatred for you also kept increasing.

A: That's where I'm guilty. So you see how far we had drifted from each other?

K: But I never thought she'd go to the extent of trying to kill you.

A: Actually she was very angry with me because she wanted to return to India and had been pestering about it for quite some time and I was adamant about continuing here because my practice was going on very well. In the heat of that anger she started talking about killing me and purposely drove the vehicle off the road.

Kal: I don't understand why Karuna had expressed a desire to leave US and go back to India? She was so worried about your relationship with Riddhima, wouldn't moving to India, only take you closer to her?

A: That's what even I'm unable to understand. She's the only one who could have answered that. But I don't want to waste my life trying to find that answer. Riddhima has managed to bring my sons back to me, and I don't want to lose them again. Neither do I want them to harbour some ill feelings for their mother, especially when she can't defend herself. That's why I request you to forget the past."

Both Kalpana and Shekar nodded in agreement and opened Karuna's closet. Each and every thing was so neatly arranged. Kalpana first reached for the albums, but they were all photos of Karuna and the kids and another was Karuna's marriage album. She wanted to see if there were any recent photograph of the two of them, but was disappointed there weren't any. Of course she had some on her camera of when Karuna had visited her along with their mother.

Armaan took out all the Kancheepuram sarees asking her to take whatever she wanted, but Kalpana wasn't very keen as she rarely wore sarees. Then Armaan handed her Karuna's jewellery case which contained a lot of trinklets like pendants, earrings etc. Kalpana chose a pendant of Balaji's face studded with coloured stones and matching earrings. As she held them in her palm and gazed at them her eyes filled with tears. "Why did you behave so foolishly Karu?" she whispered.

As Armaan pulled out the remaining stack of sarees from the shelf, an envelope fell out. He picked it up and saw that it was addressed to Karuna. He pulled out the letter and saw that it was from a person named Raji. Speaking his thoughts aloud he asked "Who is this Raji? The name sounds familiar." Then looking at the date said "It has come three months after your mother's death." Kalpana took the letter from him and started reading it aloud.

Dear Karuna,

I felt very bad to get the news of mami's death from the death certificate which you had sent to the bank.

Kalpana stopped reading and explained to Armaan, "Raji is our mama's daughter who works for a bank in Chennai".

A: Oh yes, I remember now. She helped me a lot when I went to that bank in which Karuna had the account. It'd have been very difficult to trace things without her assistance.

Kalpana continued to read "Nevertheless, my heartfelt condolences to you and Kalpana akka. Even though you didn't care to inform me or any of our family members about your mother's death, I'm writing this letter for your benefit. Your mother had closed her account with our bank so there was no need for the death certificate. But in your account, which you had opened before you left for the US, you had made your mother the nominee. Now that she's no more, it would be good if you made a fresh nomination. Especially since there's such a huge amount involved. I've enclosed herewith the required form for it.

Kalpana stopped reading and the three of them stared at each other, puzzled. The silence was broken by Shekar who said "That means Karuna knew that the amount was being credited to her account and not Riddhima's." Armaan still looked dazed, lost in thought.

Hi Sharda,
Hope things okay at your end.
Insecurity can pull a person to any length. Karuna is best example of the same. I liked the reason for which Armaan stopped Shekhar and Kalpana to reveal the truth.
Well, the title of this fic makes much more sense now - Man Proposes, but God disposes. Riddhima proposed Armaan-Karuna relationship, but God disposed it off by ensuring Karuna is never happy in the relation and insecure to the level that she is out to kill Armaan.

Omg! Karuna's state of mind is such a shock! The truth needs to be out not to create hatred but to actually let all know how Karuna was so nicely manipulated by her mother or may be, was a facade herself!
Nice update Di and m loving the way this story is moving :)

well come back Di.🤗
Glad to know that your daughter is ok now.
Awesome part , loved it as always.
Yes, you r right Di, no one can be happy making someone else unhappy.
Whatever Karuna suffered in her life as a result of her past deeds only.
I don't think Karuna's mother was only guilty one here, karuna also equally or may be more guilty one in this ff.
Hope at least Riddhima should Know the truth about Karuna.
Di, i want Karan Call her Amma, not Perima.
Please update next part super soon.
Thanks for the pm, take care.
